83. now or never

You know that cheesy saying "one moment can change everything"? Yeah, turns out it's true. Because in the one moment that our last bomb was destroyed, the entire fate of all of our friends was altered.

The three of us were at a loss for words, everyone trying to think of a plan. I stood closest to the door, my gun still in hand. We all knew that within a matter of minutes the place would be swarmed by dozens of Mountain Men. So we either needed to think of something right away, or we were all done for.

Wick paced behind me, Raven sitting on the steps in front of us, no one saying anything. That is until Raven spoke, "Wick, stop!" she demanded, not looking back at him.

He paused, giving her an incredulous look that she couldn't see but I could, "I'm not doing anything!" he argued.

Raven spun around, her eyes shooting dagger in his direction as she fired back, "Exactly."

The two continued to argue back and forth, each of them blaming the other. I remained on watch, waiting for our impending fate. I did my best to think of some kind of solution, but I knew anything I suggested, Wick or Raven would have already thought of it and discredited it.

It was only when Raven yelled a word that I barely recognized that hope was struck, "Redundancy!"

I spun around to face her, "What?" I questioned, watching as she began pulling wires from the control panel in front of her. Wick stood over Raven's shoulder, watching her every move.

Raven didn't take her eyes off the task at hand as she answered me, "They built more wind turbines than they needed. We blow the other four, this won't take the load. Surge protectors will ramp it down to keep it running-"

"--To keep it from blowing up!" Wick interjected.

"Yeah. We need to blow this turbine, Wick."

Raven turned back to him with a smile, one in which Wick returned with a shocked look, "Catastrophic failure...that's your plan?"

Raven's face fell, "Okay well when you say it like that it doesn't sound like such a good idea..."

Wick, knowing we really had no other options, gave in, "I'll set the detonators."

I tightened my grip on my gun, "I still have no idea what any of this means so I am just going to keep watch." I announced, motioning toward the door.

"Stay close," Raven instructed, "When these things blow the three of us have to get as far as we can as fast as we can."

My heart was pounding in my ears as Raven and Wick put the plan into motion. My hands were covered in a nervous sweat, my eyes locked on the door. It felt like it had been too long, they would be here soon.

Another couple of minutes passed, still no Mountain Men, the turbines still running.

One more minute passed, now I could hear voices from within the corridors, "Guys!" I yelled over my shoulder, "They're here!"

"Avery, get over here!" Raven called, summoning me to where she was crouched half hidden behind a wall.

I wasted no time in rushing over to her just as Wick was doing the same. "Press the damn button, Raven!" he screamed, his voice being mixed with those of the Mountain Men.

And so she did.

Four explosions went off behind me just as Wick and I ducked down beside Raven. All three of us looked up in anticipation, waiting to see if Raven's plan was going to work.

Raven's eyes were wide as she looked on, "We're too close." she exclaimed, grabbing Wick and I, pulling us along with her. We were stopped after only taking a few steps.

"Hands up!" They were here.

We all paused, we were still far too close, we had to keep moving.

"Gun down, now!"

I did as they said, slowly dropping my gun, throwing my hands up in surrender, "What do we do?" I whispered, looking to Wick and Raven for help.

Wick, who had his hands up and a forced smile on his face, looked at me from the corner of his eye, "Just keep backing up".

"Stop moving. Right now!"

"We're still too close." Raven whispered, confirming my worries.

Wick nodded, "Not as close as they are."

But it didn't really seem to matter. As the turbine began spinning at an alarming speed, all we could do was take another few steps back before an explosion shook the entire room, if not the entire mountain.

I hadn't managed to get as far as Wick and Raven had, so the minute that turbine went into overdrive and exploded, I was sent flying.

The last thing I remembered was the noise, and then everything was black.

---

When I opened my eyes, I was no longer in the room with the turbines, but another room in Mount Weather. As my eyes adjusted, and I moved past the severe pain in my head, I was soon able to realize that I was in the dorms.

The next thing I noticed aside from the room and the pain in my head was the fact that I couldn't move. I was strapped down to some kind of table. Next sense to come to me was sound. My ears were ringing but I could hear people talking, several people.

As I looked to either side of me I could see people, their hands were chained above their heads as they leaned against the walls. But they weren't just any people...they were my people. My friends who had been left here and more from the Ark, ones from Clarke's army meaning something had gone wrong. Raven was here too, she was slumped against one of the walls, unconscious and bleeding from her leg. It didn't take much for me to know what they had done to her while I was out, and I knew they were about to do it to me too.

Before I had a chance to speak, a voice came from beside me, "Welcome back."

The voice sent chills down my spine as a pang of recognition struck in my brain. It was a voice I hoped to never hear again.

"Landen." My voice was weak and scratchy, signalling the trauma my body had endured. "Why?" I questioned, tears pooling in my eyes as he moved so he was standing directly over me, "Why are you doing this."

Landen smirked as he reached to push a piece of hair out of my face. I shuddered at his touch.

"If you had just stayed here, listened to me, I could have kept you safe. I promised you Avery, didn't I?" His voice was causing my stomach to churn as I tried my move my face away from his hand. I didn't want him anywhere near me.

Anger seeped through my body as I gained enough confidence to spit towards him, "Screw you, Landen." I snapped, venom in my every word.

His face fell as he took a step back, wiping his face with his sleeve. The smirk that had been residing on his face was now replaced with an angry sneer, "Go ahead." he muttered to someone behind him, stepping away so he was out of my sight. I was partly thankful for that. Even if what I was about to go through was hell, at least I didn't have to look at Landen.

Even though I knew what was coming, I felt my heart drop as the sound of a drill starting up filled the room. The feeling of nausea washed over me as I tried to push against the restraints, "No." I pleaded, my voice still too weak to really leave an impact.

Tears began pooling in my eyes as someone spoke from beside me, the voice was far enough to indicate that they were chained to the wall, "Avery,"

I felt a small amount of relief wash over me. "Abby?" I called, recognizing the voice as hers.

"It's going to hurt." she warned, not doing much to ease my anxiety, "But we're here with you, alright, sweetie?"

I let out a few deep breaths as I could hear the drill getting closer, and closer. I could feel the pressure of a hand on my leg. Her words were meant to be comforting, but they really weren't. Whether they were here with me or not, I knew that this was going to hurt.

"You don't have to do this. Please, stop." that voice belonged to Kane.

His words fell on deaf ears, as whoever was holding the drill now hovered it above my leg. I clamped my eyes shut and prepared for the pain I was about to endure.

Any hope I had of the rest of our people on the outside, of Bellamy, somehow stopping them was pulled from beneath me as the drill came into contact with my skin. Within seconds, I was plunged into unimaginable pain. The metal pierced through my skin, slowly making its way through my muscle, down to my bone. Each second hurt more than the last, the tool tearing up my flesh and bone as it dug deeper and deeper. I tried to contain my screams as the sharp metal drove through my leg, but seconds after they had begun, my loud screams filled the air.

Less than a minute in and I could already feel my eyes beginning to droop- I was going to pass out. I tried to stay awake, worried that I might not wake up if my eyes closed again. My body had endured too much in the past hour and I was afraid this would be the straw that broke the camel's back.

In the last few seconds before I slipped into darkness once again, another man's voice filled my ears. Cage Wallace. He instructed the man to take me off the table and put someone else on. I couldn't stay awake long enough to find out who the next victim of their horrible procedure was going to be and maybe that was for the best.
