82. gameplan
A day later, and everything was falling into place. Raven had informed me that her and Wick, her new "friend", had made contact with Bellamy again, and had figured out how to disengage the acid fog.
So now, our plans were being set in place. We had begun to formulate teams, each one having a specific job to carry out. Half of our force along with the Grounders were already halfway to Mount Weather, the rest of us were to meet them there.
I hadn't technically been assigned a team yet, so I was putting myself on one.
"I'm coming with you." I announced, barging into the tech room. Both Raven and Wick turned to me in surprise.
Raven instantly shook her head, shooting down my proposal, "It's too dangerous."
I scoffed, crossing my arms over my chest "So? If you're going then so am I."
"No, you're not." She fired back.
"I know the way there and the way in, I've been there, I know who and what we're up against." I argued, not backing down. "Besides," I added with a small shrug, "It's dangerous no matter where I am. This is war, Raven."
"Yeah, everyone knows what we're up against, Avery. Clarke can find you another job, just not this one. I'm not sure if you fully understand how dangerous this one is."
Wick looked utterly confused. He glanced at me, opening his mouth to say something and then clamping it shut, once again opening it, "Am I missing something here."
Raven rolled her eyes as she turned back to whatever she was doing, "Wick, this is Avery."
A look of realization dawned on Wick's face as he pointed at me, cluing in who I was, "You're Bellamy's girl."
I nodded slightly, arms still crossed, "Sure" I muttered, not really liking his choice of words.
His face fell slightly as he muttered out his next words, "And Finn was your-"
I could see Raven tense as I let out a sigh, cutting Wick off, "Yeah, Finn was my brother, and now he's dead." I hated the looks of sympathy, especially from people who didn't know a single thing about me.
"Sorry." Wick muttered, dropping his head slightly.
I gave him a small smile, instantly feeling bad for being so cold towards him, "It's fine."
I quickly turned my attention back to Raven who was still fiddling with something at her work bench, "I'm coming, Raven. I'm not asking, I'm telling you."
Raven slammed her tools down as she turned to look at me, "Are you trying to get yourself killed?" she questioned, tears in her eyes.
I remained silent as I stared back at her, biting down on my lip, "I just want to help, okay? Bellamy is in there, our friends are in there. I can be helpful if I just come with you guys, so let me, Raven, please."
Wick was shifting his glare between Raven and I, "Just let the girl come."
Raven shot him a glare before looking back over at me, "Fine. Be ready to leave when we get word. If you're not by the front gates by the time I get there you will be left behind."
I rolled my eyes at her, "Aye, aye captain."
As I turned to leave, I caught Raven cracking a small grin at my words. I knew that going with Raven and Wick could potentially be a death sentence, but I also knew it needed to be done. I was an asset to them, and if I wanted to get Bellamy and the others out of there, I had to do whatever necessary.
---
Twenty minutes later I stood by the front gate waiting for Raven and Wick. We had just gotten word that all squads were to mobilize, on track to meet up with the rest of our forces outside of Mount Weather. In addition, I had been told that we had lost contact with Bellamy. This only fuelled my desire to march into that mountain, even if it potentially meant death.
My nerves were buzzing as I gripped the gun in my hand. It was all or nothing now.
Wick was the first to arrive, giving me a small grin, "Beat her here." he observed, looking for Raven, "Guess she can't leave without you."
I returned the tiniest of smiles, "Guess so." I mumbled, readjusting the weapon in my hand. Wick was watching me intently.
I turned my head, catching his eye, "Is something wrong?"
His eyes widened slightly, caught in the act, "No , I was just thinking about..." he trailed off.
I was pretty sure I already knew what his answer was, but I still decided to push, "About what?"
Wick pressed his lips into a firm line before speaking, "Your brother."
I dipped my head, my eyes moving down to the ground, "Right." I whispered, kicking at a pebble before looking up, "Everyone always is."
"Okay," Raven announced, oblivious to the conversation she was interrupting, "Everyone is moving out now."
I let out a sigh as I picked up the bag that was sitting at my feet, "Let's go to war."
---
The walk reminded me too much of the one I had made alone from Mount Weather after our escape. This time I wasn't alone, there were Sky People and Grounders all around me, but I felt alone.
I thought about what Finn would think of all this. If he was the Finn I knew before he changed. Would he be beside me, ready to go blow up some dams? Would he be leading the charge with Clarke, making orders and trying to keep everything as peaceful as possible? I went with the latter.
Raven and Wick walked a few paces ahead of me. Neither of them said much, but even from where I was standing I could sense the tension. I made myself a mental note to mention it to Raven.
Each step I took felt heavier and heavier. I was weighed down by my worry about our friends, and about Bellamy. I had no idea if any of them were alive anymore. If I lost the rest of my friends, and if I lost Bellamy, there was no way I could do it anymore. I couldn't be alone.
On top of all of that, I was absolutely exhausted. I hadn't had a good night's sleep since I lost my brother. And without Bellamy here, I had no one to soothe me back to sleep when I woke in the middle of the night from a nightmare.
I shook those thought from my head, turning to look at the Grounder walking closest to me. He was younger, probably around my age, but the confidence, the determination that covered his face made him look older.
He caught my stares, and I fully expected him to ignore me, or tell me off, but instead he offered me a nod.
The tiniest of smiles came to my face, as I tilted my chin downwards slightly, returning his nod.
The Grounder gave me a final look before turning up front again. I kept stealing glances in his direction, slowly starting to realize that these Grounders, the people that had killed my brother weren't as bad as I painted them to be.
They did what they needed to do for their people, and no matter how much I hated them for it, I really couldn't blame them.
"Aves," Raven called, pulling my attention toward her, "Come up here."
I did as she asked, and once I joined her and Wick, she pointed towards the forest, "This is where we break off from the group."
A wave of nerves passed through my body, my stomach filling with anxious butterflies. "Okay," I whispered, my heart beating so loud I was almost sure they would be able to hear it.
"Dam team!" She called, gathering the attention of a few Grounders around us, "This is our break off."
There weren't many of us, maybe about half a dozen or so. The plan was to have as many people in group four as possible, as they were the ones attacking the door to Mount Weather. Technically, our job was really only a two man job, Wick and Raven, but the rest of us were there for backup.
As we broke from the rest of the group and made our way into the forest, Raven handed me the map, "You're in charge now."
---
I managed to get us to the Mountain in good time, vaguely remembering the route I had taken away from there upon my escape. By nightfall, we were already passed the dam and into the mechanical room.
We were all as silent as could be as we inched our way into the room, trying to scope out the scene. I had only taken a few steps when someone pulled me back. I spun in confusion to see the same Grounder as before staring back at me. He was silent as he pointed to my gun, quickly shaking his head.
"Wh-"
He cut me off, "Too loud." he whispered, "They'll hear us."
He was right. The minute I fired that gun, the rest of the guards would hear it and come running, blowing our entire plan.
He must have noticed my conflicted look as he reached back, shoving a bow and arrow in my direction. I couldn't help but frown at the sight of it, sad reminders of the night of our first battle with the Grounders coming to mind, the night I almost lost both Finn and Bellamy at once.
"I don't really know how to use this." I admitted quietly, watching as he loaded another one. I wasn't really sure why or how he had two, but I decided this was not the time for questions.
"You'll learn." he promised before turning and walking a head of me.
I let out a shaky sigh as I followed after. The group of us making our way across a catwalk that overlooked the rest of the room.
"One down there." Raven whispered, pointing to a lone guard who paced the length of the room.
"Your shot." The Grounder whispered to me, motioning towards the Mountain Man.
My eyes grew wide for a moment, before I realized he was serious and wasn't going to give it up. So, I shakily loaded the bow, aiming towards the guard. I knew if I missed, it would only draw attention to us, so I had to make this.
Without giving it too much thought, I fired.
I didn't miss, I'll give myself that. However, my shot wasn't a kill shot. I hit him in the shoulder, causing him to stager backwards. A gasp flew from my lips as I realized what I just did.
Before I even had a chance to try and fire again, the Grounder set an arrow into the skull of the man, sending his body to the floor.
Through laboured breathing, I glanced over at him, "Thanks."
With the guard out of our way, it was go time.
"Avery, down here with us!" Raven whispered, waving me along with her, "The rest of you watch the door." she instructed as her, Wick and I began making our way downstairs towards the vats.
"You better learn how to use that thing." Wick whispered, nodding towards the bow.
I rolled my eyes, "Yeah, working on it."
Once we reached the bottom level, I was immediately overwhelmed. There were so many different machines, tanks, buttons. I was just thankful Wick was here and it wasn't me helping Raven on my own.
"I'll watch the door down here" I announced, very well knowing I was no help when it came to blowing the power.
Raven nodded as she dropped her pack, pulling out the necessary tools, "Stay close. I might need your help."
I gave her a small "okay" before jogging over to the nearest door, pressing myself up against in order to hear if anyone was coming. My gun still hung off my shoulder, the bow in my hands. I knew if guards flooded in here, there was almost zero chance I was going to be using the bow, but it was a nice backup.
Five minutes had passed when I finally turned back towards Wick and Raven. I had been trying to tune them out, knowing that they were talking about personal matters. However I was now getting nervous.
"Guys, is everything okay?" I called, craning my neck to see what was going on from where I was standing.
Instead of hearing one of their voices, a woman's voice came through on a radio, a voice I did not recognize.
My eyes grew wide as I took a few steps to the side, my eyes landing on Wick a couple of yards away, his expression mimicking mine, "Where did that come from?" he asked, frozen in place.
I scanned the room, finally stopping on a radio that sat on a small ledge a few feet away from Wick, "There."
Raven popped up from behind one of the tanks, "Who's is it?"
Neither Wick nor I had the chance to reply before a person in a hazmat suit came into view, heading right towards Wick.
"Wick!" I yelled, trying to get his attention. It didn't work and the man went flying into Wick, taking him to the ground.
They wrestled on the floor for a moment, giving me time to pick up my gun. There was no way I was using that bow.
"Aves, no!" Raven screamed, "They'll hear!"
I let out a small curse as I went over the options, shoot and they hear us, shoot the arrow and potentially kill Wick by mistake, find another way to kill this bastard, stand here and do nothing.
I was about to go with the third option when Wick managed to get to his feet, spinning and grabbing a large wrench from the wall behind him. He wasted no time in smacking the man over the head with it. But it was too late, the guard had already radioed in...and they were sending backup.
We all stood frozen in awe for a moment before Raven spoke, "Okay, Avery. Get ready to use your gun."
She then turned to Wick, her eyes softening slightly at his expression. He was in shock.
"Welcome to the ground." she muttered, taking the wrench from his shaking hands. "Give me the last bomb." Her voice was almost emotionless.
Wick's wide eyes travelled across the floor, landing on what I presumed was the last bomb. Now, I was no expert, but I was pretty sure it was not supposed to look like what it did. Pink liquid seeped from inside it, all over the floor beneath.
Wick's breathing was increasingly getting louder as his stress rose, "What happens if we only blow four out of the five?"
Raven shook her head slightly, "Power stays on. Door stays locked. Everyone we care about dies."
