33. shortage
I kicked at a piece of burnt debris as I let out a defeated sigh. Our meat house had burned right down to the ground, destroying any food we had left. My eyes were trained on Bellamy and Clarke who stood not too far from where I was. The two were obviously discussing what was to be done about of food shortage.
I tore my gaze from them as I looked to Octavia who was kicking through the pile, holding a slight sense of hope that she could find something salvageable. "How did this happen?" I asked, surveying the damage once again.
Octavia stopped what she was doing and looked towards the other boy that had been in the meat house with her and Murphy, "He wouldn't stop feeding the fire and it got too big, the rest was history."
The kid noticed our stares and sent us a glare. I rolled my eyes as I turned away from him, "Some people really need to learn how to listen."
Octavia let out a small chuckle, "Ignorant teenage boys are going to be the end of us all."
---
"Each group takes a gun. Remember, they're for shooting Grounders not food! We don't have enough ammo, use the spears for hunting. Get what you can, be back before nightfall. No one stays out after dark." Bellamy's loud voice boomed over those of the others in the drop ship.
A mixture of fear and adreneline was surging through the small space as dozens of us geared up for a much needed hunting trip. There was not enough food to last us and the only way we could get more was through hunting, and so here we were ready to head out beyond the safety of our walls.
I zipped up my jacket as I began following the other kids out of the drop ship, deciding I would rather join a random group then be stuck with Bellamy the whole time. Unfortunately, I never get my way.
An felt myself internally groan as an hand wrapped around my arm, pulling me back into the drop ship, "You're with me."
I turned to look at Bellamy, giving him a questioning stare, "Oh, I was actually planning on going with Finn, y'know keep an eye on him and stuff."
Bellamy rose an eyebrow, "Finn already left with Clarke."
I cursed my stupid brother for ruining my lie of a story, "I was just going to catch up with him."
Bellamy smirked, "You really want to third-wheel him and Clarke?" Man, he was not making this easy.
I sighed, "Well Myles is with them so it wouldn't really be third, more of a double date." I joked.
Bellamy didn't laugh, instead he handed me a gun, "Are you done with the antics?"
I clenched my jaw as I stared at him, he stared back, each of us waiting for the other to break. "Fine," I breathed, letting him win, "I'll come with you."
Bellamy cracked a smile, "Good, I just need to stop at Raven's tent to get some more ammo."
"Okay," I sighed, throwing the strap of the gun over my shoulder, "I'll meet you at the front gate."
---
5 minutes later and I was still waiting by the gate. It surely didn't take this long to pop into Raven's tent and grab some bullets so where the hell was Bellamy. I was seconds away from turning and leaving in hopes of catching up with another group when he arrived by my side.
"Sorry," He muttered, pulling the gates open, "I just had to deal with something."
I nodded as I followed him out, "It's fine, but we should get moving if we want to get anything before dark."
For the next few hours or so the two of us walked through the forest in almost complete silence, only speaking when we saw an animal or to commend the other for a kill (it was mostly Bellamy doing the killing because I still did not want to kill a cute little bunny). Our silence was mostly due to the fact that we were on high alert for Grounders and or food but there was also the fact that I was still slightly embarrassed over my much too touchy celebration after hitting the target the other day.
Bellamy could obviously sense the fact that I was uncomfortable because on the way back to camp he spoke up, "Why are you avoiding me?"
My head snapped towards him, shocked that he had even noticed. "I'm not avoiding you". See, the thing with me is that my face instantly turns red the minute I'm lying and in the short amount of time Bellamy has known me he has seemed to pick up on that.
He looked over to me with an unconvinced look, "You haven't spoken to me in over a day and did everything in your power to not have to be out here with me today."
My face was getting redder and redder by the moment as I looked down towards my feet, "I don't know Bellamy, I was just embarrassed."
Bellamy let out a laugh, "Embarrassed? Over what?"
I let out a groan as I looked up at him, "It's stupid honestly, so let's stop talking about it." As I looked away from him I saw the light from the fires in our camp and praised the lord, "Besides, we're back at camp."
Bellamy thankfully decided to drop the conversation and neither of us said another word as we made our way into camp. As we were returning, so were most of the other groups, being sure to follow the home before dark rule.
I handed Bellamy my gun before dropping the game we had caught onto the table where the others had been put.
A sigh escaped my lips as I looked around camp. It had been a long day, a really long day and all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and sleep, but first I wanted to make sure Finn had made it back.
I surveyed the camp, a slight sense of worry coming over me when I didn't see Finn, Clarke or Myles. I tried to suppress the panic that was bubbling inside my chest, reminding myself that it was barely dark and they would be back soon.
I took a seat on one of the logs by the front gates, not taking my eyes off of them for a minute. I was sure that any second the group of them would walk in and apologize for being late, saying they got lost or something. However deep down I knew that wasn't going to happen. Finn didn't get lost, and Clarke didn't break rules.
After 10 minutes of waiting, I decided enough was enough. I shot up from my seat, marching towards Bellamy's tent. I needed to push aside any foolish feelings I had towards him, I needed his help.
"Bellamy?" I called as I approached his tent, "I need your help. Finn and Clarke-" As I pushed open his tent I froze in shock. There, standing in front of me was Raven Reyes completely naked.
Bellamy spun to me with wide eyes as Raven rushed to grab her clothes and cover herself up. I turned around, closing my eyes as I stumbled over my words, "Oh God, I'm so sorry I didn't know you were-I'm just gonna go." I announced, leaving Bellamy's tent in a rush.
A feeling washed over me that I couldn't quite explain, but it sure felt like jealously. My face was burning as I made my way through camp towards the drop ship, hoping to find someone else who could help me find my brother and take my mind off of what I just saw.
"Avery, wait!" Bellamy called, rushing after me.
I stopped, giving myself a moment to recompose before turning to face him with an apologetic look, "Bellamy, I'm so sorry I didn't know Raven was in there with you, I should have given you a second before coming in-"
Bellamy shook his head cutting me off, "No, I'm sorry."
I was taken aback at his apology, "Why are you sorry?"
Bellamy sighed as he shook his head once again, "Just because I am. Nothing happened in there, I just want you to know that."
I was still staring at him with confusion as I nodded, "It's okay Bellamy, you can do whatever you want, doesn't affect me." Lie. It does, seeing Bellamy with Raven made my blood boil.
Bellamy gave me a small smile, "Yeah, right. Now, what did you need me for?"
hope you guys enjoyed this chapter! :)
