"Hurry." Bellamy prodded, as the two of us ran through the forest in search of finding Clarke, Charlotte and my brother. My initial plan had been to stay back at camp and ensure Murphy didn't go too haywire, but after he took off with a small group of people, I knew we needed to follow after them.
It was now dark and Bellamy and I had not come across any sign of Charlotte, nor Murphy's group.
Bellamy, for the most part, had been silent, aside from the odd order for me to follow him or 'hurry up.' I could tell he was beating himself up over the whole situation.
Stepping over a fallen tree, I spoke. "It's not your fault." I pointed out, causing him to turn his head to look at me.
He sighed before shaking his head, "I'm the one who told her to slay her demons."
I paused, reaching out to grab his arm to stop him. "Bellamy, you didn't tell her to go and kill Wells. This is on her, not you."
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that what Bellamy said to Charlotte would have prompted her to murder someone. Most people wouldn't have thought that...but apparently she had a twisted mind of her own.
"She's just a kid." he rebutted, still attempting to put the blame on himself. If there was one thing I had learned about Bellamy in the short time that I had known him, it was that he was extremely hard on himself, despite how cocky he may have appeared.
"She's a murderer, there's no way around it. She ended an innocent persons life, she did that on her own, that's not on you."
Bellamy stared at me for a moment, remaining quiet as he seemed to think about my words. It looked like he wanted to speak, like he wanted to argue with what I had said, but before he had the chance, the found of footsteps sounded off somewhere near us in the dark forest.
I turned, my skin prickling with nerves. Subconsciously, I took a step closer to Bellamy, his proximity causing me to feel safer.
"Over there." Bellamy whispered, pointing in the direction of the noise. My eyes follow his finger, landing on a lone figure running through the woods.
I glanced over his shoulder, watching as the figure hurried on. "Can you tell who it is?"
He nodded slightly, "I think it's her, I think it's Charlotte."
"Why is she alone?" I questioned, worry setting in as I saw no sign of Clarke or Finn.
Bellamy kept his eyes locked on the moving figure while shaking his head, "I don't know." After a brief pause he spoke again, "Stay here." he instructed as he moved towards another large tree.
The figure, it was now clear that it was Charlotte, slowed to a stop, looking around before letting out a defeated sigh. I remained still as Bellamy moved from his spot, running out and wrapping his arms around Charlotte, pulling her behind the tree where I stood.
At the impact of another body against hers, Charlotte let out a deafening scream, which caused Bellamy to throw his hand over her mouth in a panic, "Sh! Charlotte, it's me." he announced, trying to calm her down.
She looked between Bellamy and I with wide eyes before shoving Bellamy's hand away, "What are you doing out here?" she demanded harshly.
"Oh, we're just out for a little nighttime stroll." I muttered, I still wasn't impressed with the little murderer.
Bellamy shot me a look as he grabbed ahold of Charlotte's arm, pulling her deeper into the forest and out of view.
"Let me go!" Charlotte shrieked, trying to pull away from Bellamy.
Bellamy tried to keep his grasp on her. "Hey! We're trying to help you."
"I'm not your sister! Just stop helping me!" Charlotte snapped, and with that she took off back into the forest, "I'm over here!" she yelled, meaning that for some reason, she wanted Murphy to find her.
"Be quiet!" I snapped, as I grabbed ahold of the girl and pulled her towards me, "You're going to get us all killed! Do you want that to happen?"
She looked up at me with teary eyes, yanking her arm from my grasp. "Just go, okay? I'm the one they want." she cried.
"Okay, Charlotte," Bellamy said, grabbing a hold of her jacket, bending down so he was at her height. "I won't leave you, neither will Avery." he promised, sending a quick glance in my direction.
I rose my brows, not entirely pleased with the fact that he making decisions for me, but nonetheless I remained silent.
"Please, Bellamy." she pleaded, trying to pull away from him once again. "You have to go. Both of you."
Panic flooded my body once again as torches illuminated the forest not far from where we were. Murphy and his gang were here. "Bellamy, we have to go now!" I announced, voice wavering.
Glancing toward where the light was coming from, Bellamy gave me a small nod before effortlessly hoisting Charlotte up and over his shoulder. She resisted, but Bellamy ignored her efforts to escape as he began running, leaving me to follow after the two of them.
Charlotte continued to scream the entire time, altering Murphy to our whereabouts.
As we continued to run the two of us made brief eye contact, "Please be quiet." I begged, hoping she was going to listen. But she didn't, her screams ripped through the night sky, alerting anyone within a 2 mile radius of our location. It was no longer just Murphy I was worried about, but the Grounders as well.
Rain began to trickle down as the three of us ran through the forest, Murphy and his goonies too close for comfort.
I had been so focused on how closer our pursuers were that I didn't notice Bellamy had stopped and set Charlotte down until it was too late. I ran into the back of him with force, almost causing me to fall backwards.
He caught my elbow, giving me an exasperated look. I returned his expression, shaking my head. "What's wrong? Why did we stop?"
Letting go of me, Bellamy motioned forward, drawing my eyes toward the edge of a large cliff that we were currently standing on. "That's why."
"They're right behind us." I breathed out, defeat overcoming my expression. Seconds after the words had left my mouth , their torches illuminated the dark around us.
"Bellamy!" Murphy snapped as he marched toward the three of us, "You two can't fight all of us, give her up."
Bellamy took a step forward so he was in front of Charlotte and me. "Maybe not, but we can take a few of you with us."
Before Murphy answer, another voice cut through the air, "Bellamy, STOP!"
It was Clarke, Finn following behind her. I let out a small sigh of relief knowing my brother was okay.
They stopped in front of us, both of them looking rather distressed. "This has gone too far. Just let her go. We can work this out." Clarke tried to negotiate.
Stepping out around Bellamy, I have a small nod. "Clarke's right" I agreed, "She's just a kid, Murphy. You can't be that horrible of a person that you'd kill a little girl. Please just—" Before I could finish Murphy grabbed a hold of me, wrapping his arm tightly around me, pressing the cool metal of his knife to my throat.
I lost my breath for a moment as I tried to struggle against him as he spoke again, "I'm tired of hearing your voice freak! None of this is up to you!"
My brother stepped forward, his eyes dark. "Let her go!" He demanded. "Now, Murphy."
Murphy tightened his grasp on me, holding me tightly against his body. "Don't! Don't come any closer or I'll slit her throat, I swear to God."
I held onto his arm that was fastened around my neck, trying to relieve the pressure he was applying. "Come on, Murphy." I pleaded quietly, "Don't be stupid."
"Murphy, let her go." Bellamy ordered, his dark eyes locked on Murphy as he inched forward ever so slightly.
"I told you, don't move! Come any closer and little sunshine here is dead!" Murphy snarled.
"No please!" Charlotte cried from behind Bellamy, "Please don't hurt her."
"Don't hurt her?" Murphy repeated, "Tell you what, I'll make you a deal. You come with me right now and I won't hurt her."
"Charlotte don't!" I ordered, wincing as Murphy dug the knife into my skin, "Stay where you are." Murphy wasn't actually going to kill me... at least I didn't think he was going to.
As I had learned over the course of the past few days, Charlotte was a lousy listener, and tonight proved no different. She ignored my orders, already trying to move toward Murphy and I.
The only thing stopping her was Bellamy. He caught her before she could take more than two steps, holding her back.
"No!" she screamed as she fought against him, "Let me go! I have to."
"Charlotte, stay where you are." I ordered, trying to pry myself free from Murphy.
"Murphy, this is not happening." Bellamy announced once he had Charlotte at bay for the time being.
Murphy held onto me even tighter. "What are you going to do, Bellamy?"
"I can't let any of you get hurt anymore, not because of me. Not after what I did." Charlotte announced, her voice shaking as she spoke.
None of us had even begun to react by the time she had turned, taken a few steps, and thrown herself off of the cliff.
My heart lurched in my chest as shock rippled amongst the whole group. Murphy instantly released his grip on me, allowing me to lunged forward and toward the cliff. Bellamy was right by my side, the two of us staring down into the dark abyss where Charlotte had disappeared.
Tears of shock stung at my eyes as I turned to look at Murphy, starting toward him with intensity, "You son of a —"
"Avery, no." Finn interjected, coming between the two of us to stop me from giving Murphy a piece of my mind like I had planned. My brother wrapped his arms around me, pulling me away.
While preoccupied with me, Finn didn't have time to stop Bellamy who went flying towards Murphy.
"Bellamy." Murphy pleaded, but his pleas fell on deaf ears as Bellamy went hurdling into him, taking him to the ground.
The first punch Murphy received was well deserved, every one after that was less warranted. When Bellamy showed no sign of stopping, I pushed away from Finn. "Bellamy, enough." I ordered, hoping he would listen to me. "You're going to kill him."
I was all for Murphy getting what he deserved, but no one deserved to die, not down here.
Finn followed my lead, grabbing a hold of Bellamy and yanking him off of the bloody boy.
"Get off me!" Bellamy screamed in anger, "He deserves to die!!"
"No! We don't get to decide who lives and who dies!" Clarke argued, tears falling down her cheeks.
Bellamy spun toward her, "So help me God, If you say the people have a right to decide."
"No!" Clarke fired back. "I was wrong before, okay? You were right. Sometimes it's dangerous to tell people the truth. But if we're going to survive down her, we can't just live by 'whatever the hell we want'. We need rules."
Bellamy threw his hands up in exasperation, "And who makes these rules huh? You?"
Clarke shook her head. "For now we make the rules."
"So what, we just take him back and pretend like it never happened?" Bellamy snapped.
"No!" Clarke cried, "We-" she cut herself off.
I looked down at Murphy and he met my gaze. I clenched my fist at my side as I spoke "We can banish him."
Everyone looked towards me in surprise. Bellamy stared at me for a moment before bending down and grabbing a hold of Murphy's jacket, "Get up!" he yelled, pulling Murphy towards the cliff.
"Bellamy, come on!" I pleaded, starting towards him. Before I could get close enough, Finn grabbed my arm and pulled me back. "Aves, don't go near him, not right now."
"If I ever catch you near camp, we'll be back here. Do you understand me?" Bellamy growled, his face inches from Murphy's.
When Murphy gave the smallest of nods, Bellamy turned and pushed him to the ground before turning to Murphy's entourage that had followed him out here. "As for the four of you, you can come back and follow me, or you can stay with him out here to die, your choice."
With that, Bellamy turned and left, the four of Murphy's sidekicks instantly following after him. Clarke gave Murphy one last glance before following after the group. Finn remained frozen, his eyes locked on Murphy.
"Finn." I urged, "Come on."
He ignored me, taking a step toward the bloodied boy. Carefully, my brother knelt down beside Murphy, "If you ever come near my sister again, I'll kill you." he whispered. He then stood and tossed Murphy's knife on the ground.
"Come on, let's go." he ordered, grabbing my arm and pulling me with him back into the forest. As we left I gave Murphy one last glance, and I wasn't sure but to me it almost looked like he was smiling.
