Chapter 23
As the weeks passed, our complacency grew. We became satisfied with our new mundane way of living. In the beginning, we did try out best to try to solve the case but as time passed, we let it go.
We were content just living in our quiet home. I looked over at my mother and John who were snuggled onto the couch watching some movie and I smiled.
I wouldn't be miserable if I had to live the rest of eternity like this. Granted, it became incredibly boring but the smile on their faces made the lackadaisical days worth it.
I looked over at the breakfast John had made for us and smiled. He made pancakes that had a whipped cream smile on the top. I scooped a bit of it and licked my finger, relishing in the good taste.
We didn't need to eat under the circumstances but it was fun. John had found his phone a few weeks ago in the street and we used it to occasionally order groceries.
For some reason, my mother could only make contact with items in the living room and kitchen while I could only touch things in my room. John unusually could touch anything he wanted.
This disparity amongst us all became evident a few weeks ago when my mother fell straight through her bed in the room.
John and I tried to stifle our laughter as she glared at us but it was hilarious. He remained planted on the mattress as her head peaked through the bed.
Over the weeks though, my mother and I learned our limits and honed in our skills to not get as tired when we touched things.
As for Lizzie, a few days ago we finally decided to make contact with her through John's phone. We texted her the situation since we couldn't speak. At first, she didn't believe it was us until we video called her. She was met with an empty screen and sobbed as we messaged her about what happened.
She insisted on coming home right away to be with us but we convinced her to remain where she was until she was safe.
Everything seemed at peace in the world.
I hadn't even recently seen the masked man. The last time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago when my parent went on a movie date. We were supposed to keep the lights off in the house to not draw suspicion but I made a mistake.
I left the light on in my room as I was doing a word search and I heard footsteps downstairs. I immediately shut off the light and remained in my bed.
I watched the masked man come into my room and flip on the light. He walked around, taking a peek through my clothes and sniffing them.
I wanted to throw up in my mouth immediately. I remained still until I remembered where I was. I could touch everything in here. I looked over to the corner of my room where I kept the wooden bat.
I slowly walked towards it, trying to not make any noise.
The floor under me let out a large creak that startled the man and I froze. He looked around quickly before turning back to whatever he was doing.
I reached for the bat and held it up as I walked towards him. Before I could hit him, he looked up at the bat through the mirror and moved out of the way.
I swung the bat in his direction but he looked over me menacingly as he grabbed it from my hands.
I no longer had a way to attack him. I was a couple of feet away from him though and I saw the space between his face and mask. If I just reached out to grab it, I could take it off.
The man slowly began to walk away with the bat but before he could completely leave the room I lunged for his mask.
I ran to him to try to see his face but he covered it with his hoodie and darted out of the house.
I picked up the mask from the floor and studied it. It was a plain white mask with nothing on it except the word: Bateman written in cursive lettering.
Sitting in the kitchen recalling that night was terrifying. I hadn't even returned to my room since then.
And Bateman hadn't come back either, fortunately. When I told my parents the events of that night they decided to not leave until the man was arrested. Hence, movie date inside.
I looked back at the movie my parents were watching and shook my head.
"That looks dumb," I said.
They both shushed me and returned to the movie.
"How is the power still on?" I asked.
"Lizzie has access to our bank accounts now. So she pays it." John said.
"Oh." Was all I could say, I had no idea about that.
My mother looked over her shoulder at me and pointed to the window. "Can you make sure all the blinds are closed?" She asked.
I nodded as I hopped off the counter and checked the window in the kitchen first. Seeing as it was closed I walked to the one next to the front door.
I heard the roar of a car outside and peered through one of the blinds to see the commotion. I didn't see any cars nearby but I saw two figures standing at the end of the driveway.
It was Carter and Elijah.
