one.
PEYTON HOLLOWAY usually loved the fair. She liked having fun with her friends, eating cotton candies and sweets, just having a good time. But that year was different and the thought of going to the fair was dreadful to her.
She broke up with her boyfriend during the summer and now she didn't want to go at the fair nor at school, she didn't even want to go shopping because she was scared to run into him. Her cousin Sofia made her come, saying that she loved it and that she couldn't missed it because of Allan, but now Sofia was with her boyfriend and Peyton was by herself.
She saw her friends PJ and Josie. They weren't very close but the three girls knew each other since they were babies so they still paled around together sometimes.
"PJ, Josie!" she called as she approached them. The two girls slowed down so the Holloway girl could catch them and they started walking again together. "How was your summer?"
"Nothing happened. Literally, nothing." PJ rolled her eyes and Josie nodded in agreement. "This whole town is so boring."
"What about your summer? We didn't see you once." Josie looked at the brunette.
"I was counselor at summer camp for a few weeks. And then I just stayed home, sleeped and binged watch tv shows." Peyton replied. She didn't mention the breakup.
"Were there hot women at your camp? Maybe we should apply for next year." PJ declared.
Before Peyton could answer, their school friend Hazel Callahan stepped up. She was wearing black pants and a blazer assorted on her white shirt. Hazel was the nicest person you could met, she was just always trying to help everyone with everything. She couldn't understand sarcasm and was kind of clumsy but that was a personality trait Peyton liked about her.
Hazel grinned as she stopped in front of them. "Hey, guys."
"Hi, Hazel." Josie and Peyton greeted.
"Ugh, hey, Hazel. How was your summer?" PJ asked, clearly annoyed since Hazel was hiding her view of the cheerleaders. "Were you with your uncle at the slop farm?"
"If you mean volunteering at the National Meet Assotiation, yeah, it was good." Hazel smirked. "What are you guys doing here? You guys never come to the fair. Except you, Peyton, you're here every year."
The blonde girl took a sip of her drink through her straw with a smile. She was indeed there every year, she just didn't think Hazel noticed it.
Hazel's eye found the sling wrapped around Josie's arm. "What happened to your arm?"
"Oh my God, she ate shit is what happened." PJ chuckled in a mocking tone.
Hazel laughed. "She ate literal shit? What the fuck?"
The three girls stared at her. As it was said, Hazel couldn't understand sarcasm and they all knew it but it was still surprising them all the time.
"Did you get beat up again?" Hazel continued, unuware of the perplexity she caused.
Josie sighed. "No, I just tripped—"
"Or where you jumped? Was it spycam? Did you go to Juvie?" Hazel exclaimed.
Josie snorted but PJ rolled her eyes in derision. "Yeah, we went to Juvie."
"Oh my God, it was Juvie?" the dark-haired girl asked, still not picking up the sarcasm.
Peyton shooked her head with an amused look as she used her straw to stir her drink. Hazel's obliviousness was quite entertaining.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to get ready, get wild, and get horny for our very own Vikings!" the voice in the microphone exclaimed as the boys from the football team were running around.
"Oh my God, what did you do?" the short-haired girl kept going, ignoring the footballers. "Did you go to Juvie too?" she asked Peyton.
The girl smiled in amusement as she looked at her. "No, Hazel, I didn't go to Juvie."
"And the man who will lead us to the victory against the evil, maniacal shit-eating Huntington Ferrets, let's hear it for Jeff!"
The crowd cheered. Peyton never understood why people loved him so much since he was a total jerk but people obviously didn't mind. "Jeff, have my babies!" a girl yelled. "Jeff, come sign my tits!"
Jeff went to kiss his girlfriend Isabel, whom Josie had a crush on, while the rest of the crowd was still going crazy. "Ugh, I just don't get why girls like guys like that." PJ declared. "It's like they're like dogs, or pigs, or— what's the grossest animal?"
The team waved at everyone as the girls rolled their eyes and PJ became agitated when she saw Isabel and Brittany walking in their direction. She snatched the cotton candy Hazel was holding in her hands and handed it to Josie.
"Gimme that. Josie, take this. Take this."
Josie looked at her. "No."
"Take this!" PJ insisted as she tried to put the candy in her hands.
"Stop yelling at me!"
"Could you give that back really quickly?" Hazel asked as the two argued for a moment.
The two cheerleaders walked towards them and PJ's grip on the cotton candy tightened as she stared at Brittany, the girl of her affection. "Hey, Brittany! I am loving all the— holes in your pants."
"Thanks. You look like a little Dutch boy." Brittany replied and Peyton giggled as she scanned her friend's outfit. She did look like a Dutch boy.
PJ smiled. "Thank you. So, Britt... Can I call you Britt?"
Britanny shook her head. "I prefer if you just call me my name."
Peyton turned away from the conversation to glance discreetly at Hazel who was playing with the straw of her drink. Her black hair fell in front of her eyes. Probably feeling that she was being watched, she raised her head to look at the blonde who immeditaly looked away.
"Isabel!" PJ suddenly exclaimed, bringing Peyton back to reality. "Josie was just saying something similar to me!"
"I don't think so." Josie replied.
PJ nodded towards Isabel with an insisting look for her friend. "I think so. It was really good. It was super funny."
"You're just so— you're skinny, as well." Josie declared and Isabel nodded with an embarassed look. "I'm Josie, by the way, good evening. Yeah, you're skinny. You're real skinny minnie, aren't ya? You probably should eat."
When she said that, Peyton's eyes widened but her friend didn't stop. And for some reason, the Holloway girl couldn't look away. "They're gonna send you to the hospital with how skinny you are. Uh-oh, call the doctor. Skinny girl, I see."
Isabel and Brittany shared a confused look and gave the girls an embarassing smile before walking away. PJ grunted as she looked at Josie. "Why did you say it like that?"
"I panicked!" Josie exclaimed.
"We looked fucking stupid!" PJ snorted in annoyance as the two girls started walking away, leaving Hazel and Peyton alone.
They shared a smile and Hazel asked. "How was your summer?"
"Could've been better, I guess." the blonde girl replied. "Sorry, PJ threw your cotton candy away. You can take mine if you want." she said as she handed it to her.
Hazel smiled. "Thank you."
This wanted to make Peyton smile too and she would've if Allan wasn't walking towards them. Hey eyes widened in panic. She really didn't want to talk to him, not right now. She loooked back at Hazel. "Kiss me."
"What?" the brunette replied, confused.
Allan was getting closer and Peyton really didn't have time to explain. She impulsively took a step closer and placed her hand on the back of Hazel's neck, bringing her head closer to hers. Their lips met gently and surprisingly enough, the brunette kissed her back. Even though Peyton had kissed her to escape Allan, the boy quickly disappeared from her thoughts as they were kissing. Hazel's lips were soft and tasted like cotton candy and her hands on Peyton's hips were making her feel duzzy, in a good way.
She finally pulled away and her breath quickened a bit. Hazel ran an hand through her hair, still a little shaken by what had just happened and Peyton tried to explain herself. "I... I'm—"
She didn't have time to tell her anything because Allan walked right to her. Shit. She thought this would have been enough to make him leave her alone but apparently not. "What was that about?" he asked as he stopped in front of the two of them.
Hazel stared at him, then at Peyton, and you could see she was trying real hard to understand where was the problem.
"Leave us alone, Allan." the blonde replied with a dirty look.
"No. Since when are you two hanging out with each other anyway?"
And without her knowing why or being able to stop herself, the words spilled out Peyton's lips. "We're not hanging out, we're dating."
Hazel gave her a quick questionning look but thankfully, she played along and took Peyton's hand in hers.
"Dating? I was thinking we could talk. Get back together." Allan questionned.
Peyton shook her head. "We're not getting back together."
"Come on—" he tried to come closer to her but Hazel let go of the blonde's hand to put her arm around her shoulder.
"She's with me now. You should just move on." she smiled.
Allan gave them both a look but he finally walked away. Peyton sighed in relief and turned to Hazel. "Thanks for playing along."
The short-haired girl nodded. "You're welcome."
"You're not— freaked out?" the blonde questionned and Hazel simply shrugged.
"I don't mind being your fake girlfriend. If that helps you keep this guy away from you."
Peyton smiled. "Thank you. Um, I gotta find my cousin now but I'll see you at school tomorrow, yeah? Thanks again, really."
"Bye, girlfriend." Hazel gave her a genuine smile.
