MAY 31. 1927.

Gellert Grindelwald, the famous dark wizard escaped from the United States. The cause of this was Grindelwald's impending extradition to Europe by the International Confoderation of Wizards following six months imprisonment at the MACUSA.

On 30 May 1927, International Confederation of Wizards sanctioned Gellert Grindelwald's extradition to take place and Grindelwald was supposed to be transported from MACUSA's prison to Europe effective immediately, and Incarcernation Carriage by Rudolph Spielman and other aurors, to be put on trial for the crimes he committed in Europe.

Prior to the move, due to Grindelwald's gift of persuasion, he had his tongue cut out, as several guards had sided with him.

It's most likely that he got help from the inside by a MACUSA auror named Abernathy....

Before I could read the lines all the way, a hand suddenly snatched the fresh number of the Daily Prophet from my clutches. I opened my mouth in total surprise and raised my head to look up to the figure next to me.

"Merlin's beard, damn MACUSA! They can't be trusted with anything!" seethed my older sister, Belvina (as if she would be a hot bowl of water, on its way to explode), who finally decided to sank on the chair on the opposite side of the table.

I'd bet it's not entirely the MACUSA's fault. I mean, we're only talking about Gellert Grindelwald ... I doubt that even if the americans had a whole army... that wouldn't have stopped him either. Especially if he had an inner man.

"Hey! I wanted to read that!" I cried out indignantly, reaching for the Prophet, but... no success, no luck, no chance to get it back. My big sister had already taken it, and I could only gasp, helplessly. Just another unfortunate day as a younger sibling, nothing more. "And you're late! Again! Bells, I can't believe this! My lunch break is almost over!"

"Ah! They’re not going to scold you for an extra ten minutes!" Bel waved at my direction uninterestedly, but in the meantime she didn’t even look up at me, she read the whole page. The lines I wanted to read during my break. So much for staying in the picture about the world’s wizarding news. Of course, if I can't keep up with a meeting, I can blame it all on my sister. Just like back in school.

Bel, my only sister worked on The Department of International Magical Cooperation, she had a quite high position so she always ran. And by always, I mean... All the bloody time.

And she was always late. As if her clock would be forever late. But my sister didn't even had a watch.

It could count as an excuse that her work also required her to know all about the latest news, like mine did. Although I strongly doubted that in the morning it was not the first thing they have told her that Grindelwald escaped in America. Maybe they have woken her at the middle of the night so she could know all about the latest... sad turn of events.

It would have explained why the perfect daughter, Belvina Thalassa Black looked so... Scattered.

"What do you think?"

"About? Grindelwald?" I asked back as I sighed loudly and heavily,
leaning my chin on my clasped palms. I wasn’t even in the mood anymore to finish the leftover roast turkey sitting in front of me. The whole international situation took away my appetite.

Maybe forever. I even felt kind of dizzy.

"No, Lyra, the latest fashion trends from the Witch Weekly!" Belvina rolled her eyes, then with a quick motion she twisted up the thin newspaper and slapped my forehead with it. Hard. "Of course, Grindelwald!"

"That I... Hope that he will not come back to London..." I shivered by just the thought of the possibility.  Even though I knew there was relatively little chance of that, since I knew he had an unfinished business here in England.

But I had to deceive myself a little.

"Take care, Lyra, please! The aurors are in the biggest danger here." Belvina warned me with a whisper, hesitantly. Bel and honestly, my whole family took with the grain of salt that I chose this career... not something... safer. Especially my brothers.

A girl... Particularly that sister they viewed as a fragile, little gal... chose to join the Auror Department.

Cygnus, my twin brother laughed so hard as I outlined my plan to him that he almost rolled off the bed.

"I know, Bel." I nodded like an obedient little commodity. As if... I had any choice at all. As if there would be an escape route. I wanted to do this. I was aware of the all its dangers. "Relax. They will not send the boring little drafter slash assistant against Grindelwald."

"Oh, poor little sissy!" she sighed as she leaned back in her chair, anxiously. Then her eyes lit up, which I knew very well that... It didn't mean any good. If Belvina Black had a magnificent idea... that's not a good sign for Lyra Black. "Ask Theseus!"

"Why would I ask Theseus?" I abashed, immediately turning on the offensive mode in myself.

"Theseus must know what's going on here! And if you wanna be more than a... "boring drafter slash assistant" then tell it to your bloody boss!" Bel knew what the twitching of my face meant, but she pulled the subject nonetheless. I always insisted that I'm over him. As I should be... After almost ten years, both of us in new relationships.

But my face still twitched when I came across Theseus Scamander.

Which was extremely awkward considering the fact that we worked together every single day.

"Didn't you just said that I should take care of myself? Asking Theseus to spill all the deets and take me with them to... Bounty hunt or whatever... That's exactly the opposite!" I asked back confused, and I honestly didn't understand my sister's mind.

But Belvina didn't even flinch. She sipped her tea as if she would be the Minister of Magic.

Anything could be said about Belvina Black, but she has style, that's for aure.

"Theseus would tell anything to you. Anything in the whole world, about everything. I guarantee you that he also knows that you just waste your full potential and talent with your current job and you should be on the field more!" Bel explained further, gently gesturing with her hand then nestled closer with her chair like she's planning to tell me something spicy. Belvina Black and her gossips, Merlin's beard! "And... Ever since he is the Head of the Auror Department, it's even more worthwhile for me that my little sister works with the great Theseus Scamander."

"Now I get it! That's the real deal here!" I put two and two together quite fast and honestly, I felt a little betrayed. "Bells... Honestly, I highly doubt that Theseus would know more than you."

"Look, Lyre..." mumbled my sister, and as she lowered her voice, she tilted her body towards me so the rest of the cafeteria won't her us. "If a war's coming, we have to know. If something is threathing our family, we have to prepare."

"Yeah, of course, we should!" I rolled my eyes so the mocking in my approval would be visible.

If a war is actually coming, we can't physically prepare for that. I knew Gellert Grindelwald's method well. He's started to work in the dark circle around the same time I finished my auror training. I read every single case of his, so soon that the ink in the folder hardly dried. I knew his story and I've seen all the photos of the attacks.

I've met the injured who dared to stand up against him. And I could recite a list of the victim's names.

I knew very well how serious this matter is, how big the threat is, how grounded and well-founded the fear is.

"I need to know." Bel whispered as she grabbed my hand. She always needed to know everything. Ever since we were little. Anything happened in our childhood home, Belvine knew within seconds. She had a whole gossip chain in Hogwarts too.

Merlin knows how she managed all this.

But she was the one who told me our father disowned my favourite brother. That Theseus has enlisted to go to war. That we are going to have a little brother.

That our father died.

"You need to know too." my sister stared deeply in my eyes. I couldn't say a thing so I just nodded with a lump slowly rising in my throat.

Then we got up from our table, left the galleons that put together the price of our consumption. We began to slowly walked towards the elevator, with heavy bodies.

We stepped inside the elevator, and as there wasn't a real crowd inside, I sighed relieved.

"Hey..." Belvina smoothed my arm so I got pushed out of thoughts. "What time will you be home tonight?"

"It depends. I don't know whether or not I stay and work overtime." I shrugged my should but in reality, I knew it already what will happen. In the last few weeks I always stayed in for overtime work. Every. Single. Day. "But Cy and Violetta will be home before me, that's for sure. Why? Is Herb working late again?"

Bel had lived with Herbert Burke even before they got married a year ago. But she was simply not capable of staying in their flat  when it was known in advance that her husband would not go home, just in the middle of the night. This is why we had the couch set up for her all the time, just in case.

I didn't know what my sister feared exactly, but ever since our father died, our "sleepovers" became even more frequent. Not that I would have mind it. I loved being with Bells and it was truly refreshing that someone else walked in the apartment, not just the usual people.

"Don't call him Herb!"

"How should I call him then? Herby?" I teased some more.  "Poor man. His parents couldn't give him at least a semi-normal name."

"So... Can I come over?" Belvina  quickly diverted back to the original topic, just as the elevator stopped at her floor.

"Basement Level 5. Department of International Magical Cooperation.
International Magical Trading Standards Body. International Magical Office of Law. International Confederation of Wizards, British Seats" the automatic, slightly robotic voice announced so suddenly I jumped.

"Of course you can." I assured Bel. She smiled gratefully then followed the little airplanes out of the lift.
