the first day of summer has always been the craziest around. tourists flooded the streets of outer banks, the sun shined the brightest and the island just got over a pretty big hurricane not too long ago. so that meant fishing season would be the biggest around this year. especially for crabs. but the best part about summer for john b and his friends was that they get to hang out together, party and chill like old times. for all of the pogues know that a day after a hurricane means it's a free day.

jolene was always the last one to be picked up on john b's boat. her home was located just down the road from kie's house. the two girls lived in figure eight and they lived pretty close to each other.

the mcintyre family were one of the richest families in outer banks with their vodka and beer distillery company. it was founded in dublin, ireland by ronan mcintyre's great great grandfather, seamus mcintyre and became super successful. so successful that the business became a worldwide company, opening distilleries around europe and america. and when ronan inherited a wine vineyard from his grandfather, who used to live in outer banks back in the late 70's, the family moved from their quiet home in north dublin, ireland to the island of outer banks.

jolene was about 8 years old when her family arrived. the property her parents bought resided with a wide grassy backyard, tall trees framing the area, and it led to their own dock. a couple of paces up, they had their own beach spot.

she met the pogues when she was exploring the local beach for the first time with her family, a day after they moved into their new home.

jolene wandered off to collect sea shells. just as she was about to pick up a shiny conch shell, a beach ball hit the back of her bold and deep red head, making her drop the shell on her foot. in pain and in anger, she quickly spun around and looked for whoever threw the ball at her.

pope ran over to her to apologize for hitting her but before he could even utter a word, she started yelling at him in fast celtic. which terrified him thoroughly. one, he couldn't understand a word she was saying, and two, she had a lot of anger for someone who looked too adorable for words.

john b quickly came to his defense and calmed her down, telling her that it was an accident and that jj didn't catch the ball in time. of course, jj placed the blame back on pope. amongst the two arguing, jolene suddenly switched from being mad to giggling at them.

she spoke to them in english and the first time they heard her super heavy irish accent, they were hooked. but none more than jj maybank, who became obsessed with her accent.so much so that, to this day, he tries to impress her by mimicking the way she talks.

jolene didn't have the heart to tell him that he sounded horrible.  so she just told him to keep practicing. even though it was very painful to hear.

that morning, john b, jj, pope and kie were on their way to pick up jolene so that they could all hang out at the cut together. jolene's birthday was actually in three days and she was the last one out of them to turn 18. making her the youngest out of the group.

usually when they get to her dock, jolene is never there on time. mostly because she is in her little makeshift van home that resided a few feet behind her house. the van she converted into her little hippy hideaway was a 1970's vintage volkswagen van she painted, reconstructed and decorated herself after she turned 16. her father was going to sell it but she convinced him to let her keep it. so she made a bed in the back of it, got a fire pit, a rug for the outside, a hanging beaded curtain for the entrance to the back and decorated the inside with all of her favorite posters, vintage decor and such. it looked like she was well on her way to woodstock with it.

like the entire hippy culture exploded inside of it.

john b parked his boat right at her dock, and just like they all expected, jolene was not there. which was something they expected of her.

"so who's going to do it, this time?" pope asked, looking at everyone else. "last time, i did it and her father scared the shit out of me."

"you're such a pussy," jj chuckled out, drinking a little from his beer can. "her dad isn't that bad."

"please," kie rolled her eyes at him. "you nearly pee your pants whenever he's around."

the three of them laughed while jj looked slightly offended by her choice of words. "i take offense to that." he scoffed, placing the beer can down. "to prove it to you, i'll go get her. she likes me best, anyway."

john b stood up with him, chuckling slightly. "i'll go with you." he added. "knowing you, it will take you all day to get her to come with us."

"yeah, because he has a crush on mrs. mcintyre." kie joked, earning a loud laugh from pope.

jj wiggled his eyebrows at her as the two stepped off of the boat and onto the wooden dock. "what can i say? she's hot." he replied with a cheshire grin. "looking at her, i can see where jojo gets her looks from."

"come on, lover boy." john b chimed in, lightly shoving him forward.

"good morning, mrs. mcintyre." john b greeted as soon as they got to the front entrance of the huge manor they lived in.

mrs. lucy mcintyre spent most of her summer mornings after breakfast in her silk emerald green robe, flaming red hair in a messy bun with her perfectly pedicured feet crossed on the little patio table on the front porch area, reading one of her jane austen books. a mug of coffee rested on the table carefully as she enjoyed some free time before she started her day.

her legs were always shaven and smooth looking and she always looked her best. rather she was dressed down or up to par, she looked youthful and radiant.

"morning, mrs. mcintyre." jj also greeted her, leaning on the post at the top of the stairs. which led to the wide porch.

"mornin' boys." she replied back, peering her light green eyes at them. a soft smile grazed her naturally pink lips. her heavy irish accent rolled off every word she spoke elegantly. "she's in 'er van out back. i'm pretty sure she's still the'r."

"thank you," john b thanked before they walked back down the front porch steps.

"you look beautiful, mrs. mcintyre." jj called out as they made their way to the back yard.

"and i'm still married, jj!" she jokingly yelled back, showing her wedding ring on her finger at him.

her action made john b laugh while the blonde pretended to be heartbroken. "mr. mcintyre is the luckiest man in the world." he sighed dramatically.

the faint sounds of kozmic blues by janis joplin could be heard playing inside the floral painted van and inside, jolene mcintyre laid on her bed, wearing nothing but a long black t-shirt and panties. she was still asleep to the soothing music of the 70's legend playing on her vinyl. her array of colorful blankets and pillows were rustled underneath her.

the smells of vanilla and cherry incense filled the van delicately. when jj and john b got to her van, they saw that the door to the back area was closed, the muffled music was playing and the family dog, a husky named ciri, laid out the door, on top of the colorful tapestry on the grass.

"hey, ciri." john b cooed, petting the top of the dog's hair. "where's your mommy? is she still asleep?"

"i'll give you a treat if you can wake her up." jj bribed as he scratched the husky's neck.

ciri barked once, loving the attention they were giving her. the two rose back up and looked at each other. "back window?" john b suggested.

    jj nodded. "back window."

jolene was abruptly woken up by the sounds of someone knocking loudly on her back window. with a lazy groan, she slowly peeled her head off of her furry pillow, reaching over to grab her favorite red rimmed heart shaped glasses.

"paging doctor sexy dynamite!" she heard jj's loud voice yelling as the knocking continued on. "i said, paging doctor sexy dynamite with bright green eyes! i've got a case of redhead obsession and i need a cure, stat!"

she growled a little, placing her sunglasses over her tired eyes. she rolled onto her stomach, tossing her feet up behind her. she reached up and opened the brown curtains to see both of her best friends standing there.

jj had a cheesy smile, waving hi at her while john b gestured for her to open the window. she sighed, unlocking the window and lifting it up. she placed her hands on the metal edges of the open window and peered at them from the top of her sunglasses.

"top o' the mornin' to ya, jo." john b said with a terrible irish accent.

jolene glared at him a bit. "irish people don' say that, ya know." she reminded him. her thick irish accent lacing perfectly together with her words. "it's already time to go? how long have i been out?"

"judging by the fact that you are sleeping here and not in your room, one would conclude that you didn't even make it inside your house after last night's party." jj pointed out, leaning on the side of her open window. "good thing your hot mom is a very chill lady."

"stop hittin' on ma mom, jj." she chided, using her elbows to prop herself up. "i'll be out soon, bailigh leat. go on."

she closed her window and curtains, blocking them from watching her change clothes.

     "english, mcintyre!" john b yelled.

"fuck off!" she yelled, translating what she said. the two chuckled as they waited for her to get dressed. she was not a morning person, that was for sure and it was so fun annoying her when she was like that. her accent and her cursing was just too funny to hear.

"look who decided to wake up this morning!" kie was the first to greet her as soon as the three made it back.

jolene, now dressed in a bright yellow, orange and paisley flowy robe, and black belt around her waist, with a colorful bikini underneath, drug her black flip flops across the dock behind jj and john b as they made it to the boat.

her impossibly long and deep red hair laid all around her in soft waves as her heart shaped sunglasses rested over her bright green eyes.

she gave her a forced smile as jj helped her onto the boat.

"beautiful, as always." she added, giving her a hug. jolene hugged back, sitting next to her. "how's our lucky girl doing today?"

"this lucky girl is still fightin' demons." she sighed, feeling the wind blow as john b began to drive the boat away from their dock.

"here, babydoll." jj said, giving her a can of beef he opened for her. "can't have my pretty princess have a storm cloud cover her sunshine, can i?"

jolene took the can and flipped him off. "ya yellin' ain' helpin' me none, jj."

"i love it when you talk like that." jj groaned sensuously, sitting back down. "your accent makes your anger all the more hot."

"is that the only reason why you love her, jj? her accent? ," kie joked, drinking her beer.

"no no, he also loves her because she could get him weed the fastest." pope added on.

"don't forget, she's the only one who can put up with his shit for more than five minutes." john b chuckled out.

everyone began laughing while jj gasped dramatically. "i will not stand for these types of lies and abuse!" he loudly proclaimed. "i'll have all of you know that jojo is more than just a sexy accent and weed dealer to me. i mean, sure, is she the hottest red head i've ever seen? hell yeah! does her irish accent help me sleep at night? you bet it does! and does her brother grow the best weed in the world? fuck yeah! but above all else, she is my personal little sunshine. she brightens up my day wholeheartedly and i appreciate her for it."

jolene smiled at him sincerely. she knew they were all just joking but it was still nice to be loved by her friends. and appreciated, as well. although she doesn't sell weed, her older brother sells it to the kooks during parties in the boneyard. he just gives her free weed because she's his baby sister. if their parents found out, they are both dead.

so she just gives it to her friends. but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a stash of rolled up joints in her van, cleverly hidden so that no one could find it but her.

"awww, ma wee lit'le lad." she cooed, placing her hands over her heart.

"you see what i mean? tell me that's not the most attractive accent ever!" jj exclaimed, pointing at her.

"okay, we get it, lover boy." kie giggled out. she circled her arm around jolene's shoulders.

"i mean, he's not wrong." pope thought it over before agreeing with him. "you're probably the only irish family on this island. you talk to a touron and they are instantly wrapped around your little fingers."

"i appreciate the compliments," she thanked, making a heart with both of her hands.

"let's not talk about her dating right now." john b chimed in protectively. "she's not even 18 yet."

john b has always treated jolene like a baby sister. despite her only being one year younger than everyone. she, in many ways, was like the baby sister of the group and he took that role very seriously. she was their personal sunshine and he wanted to protect it as best as he could. meaning, he was always skeptical with the idea of her dating, because he didn't want her to get hurt and then he would have to go to jail for murdering someone.

jolene is an eccentric person. her personality drew people in, kooks and pogues alike. she is the life of the party, essentially so she gathers attention everywhere she goes. the kooks liked her because of her looks and her status in the rich world. the pogues liked her because of her free-spirited attitude and down-to-earth personality. also because she's a genuine person. it was pretty hard to forget a girl like her.

but that didn't mean that there weren't people out there that would try to use her kindness for weakness. and john b wanted to protect her from those types of people.

"i am a big girl, john." jolene reminded him. "i can handle a wee bit of trouble."

"and that's what i'm afraid of, honestly."
