February 1, 2000
Harry and Louis sit on Harry's bed in his bedroom on a cold February day, staring out the window into the English country side. They were supposed to be having a sleepover but they both hadn't gotten any sleep due to the exciting day ahead. The two had been friends for as long as they could remember, each one always there for the other, even in the hardest times. Today was Harry's 10th birthday, also known as the day that they hoped Harry's acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would arrive. The two boys grew up in families made up of entirely witches and wizards so it was almost guaranteed that they would be accepted to Hogwarts. Louis' letter had already arrived a few months earlier and now he was anxious for his friend's to arrive as well.
"What if I don't get in?" Harry asks in a somber voice, clearly concerned by the fact that his letter hadn't arrived yet.
"Hazz, it's 6:00 in the morning. Don't you think it takes some time for an owl to fly all the way here from Hogwarts?"
"Yeah, I guess. But they should give owls jet packs so they can get here faster."
"Once again, it's 6:00 in the morning."
Harry lets out a heavy sigh and falls back onto the bed.
"Would you stop being so dramatic?" Louis says, hitting his friend in the face with a pillow with a smile.
"I'm not being drama-" Harry's words are cut off by a faceful of pillow. "OW! I've been hit! Man down!" He clumsily falls off the bed.
"Yes, of course, not dramatic at all."
"Hey, you're the one who's being dramatic!" Harry tries to ineffectively shoot back, now laying on the floo"I'm not dramatic, I'm sassy. There's a difference," the Swag Masta from Doncasta says matter-of-factly.
"Well whatever you are, you're being annoying," Harry says, still laying spread-eagle on the floor.
"You gonna get up?"
"Not until my letter arrives."
"We could be here a while."
As if it were summoned, a grey owl flies through the window and into the room. Lou jumps back a bit, surprised from the sudden chaos and Harry jumps up from his position on the floor.
"BLOODY HE- oh. It's a Hogwarts owl!" Harry says excitedly. "And it has a letter!"
The owl carries a letter with a red stamp in its beak. It carefully places the letter on the floor in front of Harry before taking flight, presumably back to Hogwarts. Harry picks the letter up from the floor and takes a piece of parchment out of the envelope.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

"Congrats, Hazz!" Louis says as he reads the letter over his friend's shoulder.
Harry was beaming with joy.
"Thanks! Mum! Look what came!" Harry yells as he bursts through his bedroom door.
...
The rest of the morning consists of Harry, his parents, and Louis excitedly talking about Hogwarts.
"What house are you hoping to get sorted into, Harry?" his dad asks.
"I wanna get sorted into Gryffindor like Gemma!" Harry says with the same big smile spred across his face.
His dad returns a smile.
"What about you, Louis? Which house do you wish to be sorted in?" Harry's mom asks kindly.
Louis looks up from his plate of scrambled eggs. "Oh! Erm, I hadn't really thought about that much," Louis says.
His mum had been sorted into the Gryffindor house and his biological father had been sorted into Slytherin. Louis had never heard any good things about his dad. He left his mum and Louis when Louis was only a toddler and no one had heard from him ever since. He didn't have many memories of his dad. None that were good anyway. He much rather prefered his step dad, who was sorted into Hufflepuff, but Louis didn't see himself as a Hufflepuff. Maybe a Gryffindor like his mum?
"Harry, love, I was thinking," Harry's mum says, "for your birthday, why don't we go to Diagon Alley today to gather your school supplies?"
"Really? That would be amazing!" Harry says as the smile on his face grows even bigger, which didn't even seem possible.
"Oh, and Louis, sweetheart, I asked your mum if she was alright if you came with us and she said you could! She left you a pouch of coins."
"Wow! Thank you Mrs. Styles!" Louis says as he now has an identical smile on his face as Harry's.
"Thanks, Mum! Thanks, Dad!" Harry says as he gets up from his seat and hugs his parents. "C'mon, Lou let's go get ready!"
The two boys jump up from their seats at the kitchen table and back to Harry's room to gather their things.
Anne laughs to herself. "These boys have the greatest years of their lives just ahead of them."
...
Harry and Louis find themselves standing in front of The Leaky Cauldron in London a few hours later, examining the building.
"This way, lads." Harry's dad says as he walks through the front doors.
The two follow him into the pub as their noses are greeted with the smell of beer and old musty wood the second they step inside.
Harry let's out a sneeze from the dust that's released from the door frame as they walk in.
"Follow me, loves," Mrs. Styles says as she leads the boys to the back of the pub near a courtyard. They come across a brickwall and stop in front of it.
"Erm, Mum? That's a wall," Captian Obvious Harry points out.
"Yes, I know," Anne says with a smile. She walks up to the wall and traces a few bricks with her index finger. "Three up, two across, three times," she mumbles to herself. She taps the bricks as she goes until there's a sudden rumble and a doorway emerges in the wall to reveal a crowded alley filled with restaurants, stores, wizards and witches.
Louis and Harry's jaws drop in awe. They take in the smell of foods from near by restaurants, they hear the sounds of bustling wizards and witches, moving from one store to another.
"Where do you boy's want to go first?" Anne asks casually.
...
They Styles family and Louis find themselves in Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, shopping for they boys' uniforms and robes.
"Muuum," Harry whines as he looks at himself in a mirror, "I look like a gnome in rags with this robe on."
"Oh, hush, you look adorable," Anne says as she spins her son around, examining the robe.
"Yeah, you look ador-" Louis starts.
Harry turns his head to his friend.
Louis' face reddens. He clears his throat. "I mean, it uh- it looks good on you," he says awkwardly as he fidgets with the sleeve of one of his robes.
"Why don't we head to another shop?" Harry's dad suggests. Neither Harry's mum or dad seemed to notice the awkwardness between the two boys.
"Yeah, that sounds good," Louis says.
The four pay for the clothes and walk out into the busy alley.
Louis finds his eyes wandering, looking from one store, to another. He was too embarrased to look back at Harry.
"Oi, watch where you're going there, mate," says a wizard who Louis has walked into.
"Oh, sorry," Louis spoke.
"C'mon, Lou, this way," Harry chimed with a smile as he lightly tugs on his friend's sleeve. Louis couldn't help but smile back, getting lost in his friend's emerald eyes.
The four emerge from the crowd of witches and wizards and step out onto the sidewalk outside of Ollivander's wand shop. Empty boxes overflowing in the windows like water filling a sinking boat.
"Why don't you boys go inside while your dad and I wait out here?" Anne suggests to her son.
"Alright, let's go, Lou!" Harry says as he continues to tug on Louis' sleeve and into the shop.
A light ringing of a bell fills their ears as they enter the shop. The smell of freshly cut wood and dust enters their noses as their eyes are met by shelves upon shelves of wand boxes, stacked high all the way up to the ceiling.
"I'll be right with you!" A man's voice calls from the back of the shop.
The two boys step up to the small desk in the middle of the room and wait.
"Whoa, how could he have possibly made all of these wands?" Louis asks as his eyes wander around the room.
"Ah, yes, hello Mr. Styles and Mr. Tomlinson!" Ollivander says as he makes his way to the desk, kicking stray wand boxes on the floor out of the way.
"Hello! You know who we are?" Harry inquires.
"Why yes! I know your parents! I remember giving them their first wands before their first years," Ollivander beamed.
"You remember my parents?" Louis asks wonderingly.
"Oh, yes. Johanna Poulston, 13 inch cypress with unicorn hair core," Ollivander says with a smile as he recalls the time when he first met Louis' mum. "And Troy Austin, 9 inch hawthorn wood with a dragon heartstring core..." he says, less joyfully this time.
"Is something wrong?" Harry asks, taking note of the sudden mood change.
"No, no, everything's quite alright," Ollivander says as he fakes a smile.
"It's alright sir, I think everyone knows at this point that my dad left. Never to be seen again," the Doncaster boy says, staring at the floor.
"I'm very sorry, my boy."
The room is filled with an awkward silence.
"Right! Your wands!" Ollivander says abruptly, making the two boys jump.
"Mr. Styles, I think I have the perfect wand for you..." he says as he steps behind a shelf. He returns a few seconds later, holding a thin, long, wand. "There you are. Aspen wood, 10 inches, unicorn hair core."
Harry takes the wand and stares at it for a moment. He examines the fine surface of the object and the shine it produced from the polished wood.
"Alright, I'll give it a go," he says.
He makes a swift movement with the wand and sends a pile of empty wand boxes flying across the room, making the three duck.
"Oh..."
Ollivander sighs and stares at the mess.
"Sorry about that, sir."
"That's alright, Harry. We have this problem every year!"
Harry returns the wand to the wand maker who walks back behind the shelves and returns with another wand.
"Try this one. Rowan wood, 9 1/2 inches, with a unicorn hair core."
Harry takes the wand and makes another swift movement. There's a slight whooshing sound and the wand seems to flow in the curly-headed boy's hand.
"Yes! That's the one!" Ollivander says with a voice full of excitement.
Harry beams at his new wand. Long, but just the right size for his hands, the wood was a light brown, polished the point where it almost sparkled. The flexibility was just enough to swiftly cut through the air. It was perfect.
"Now, Mr. Tomlinson," Ollivander says from the back of the shop. "I think I have the perfect one for you!"
Ollivander returns with a wand in hand.
"Acacia wood, 10 1/2 inches, unicorn hair core."
Louis delicately takes the wand from his hands and hold it in his own.
"Try it out then," Ollivander says with a smile.
Louis waves the wand in the air, resulting in a stack of papers flying into Harry's face.
"Hey!"
"Whoops! Sorry," Louis gives Hazz a sympathetic pat on the head. Harry gives an unimpressed look back.
"Maybe a different one will work," Ollivander says as he once again makes his way to the back of the shop.
He comes back a while later with a new wand.
"I think this one is the one. Dogwood, 13 3/4 inches, with a unicorn hair core."
"Why is it so long?" Louis questions.
"Well, longer wands are typically for shorter wizards and witches," the wand maker explains.
An offended look spreads across the boy's face as Harry laughs at him with no sympathy whatsoever.
Louis lightly smacks his friend's arm to shut him up.
"Give it a go then," Ollivander suggests.
Louis swiftly flicks his wrist as the wand glows slightly in his hand. His eyes widen with joy when he feels the tranquility run through him like a river.
"Yes, yes that's the one!" Ollivander announces happily.
The two boys beam as they look at their new wands that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. They pay for their wands, thank Ollivander, and exit the shop.
"Oh, those are wonderful, boys!" Anne says.
After a few more stops at Weasleys Wizard Wheezes and Sugarplum's Sweets Shop, the boys were tired and ready to go back to Harry's house and wait until September 1.
