Rayne sat in one of the labs of the helicarrier, wiping her nose and venting to Janet about how she messed up. "I just- I don't know what happened," she sighed, throwing yet another blood soaked tissue into the wastebasket. "I saw her and I just... froze."

Janet lifted Rayne's chin to keep the blood from coming out of her nose. "When's the last time you saw her?" she asked, pinching Rayne's nose.

"Seventy-three years," Rayna answered, nasally. "I just don't understand what happened."

"I'm assuming she's never tried to kill you before," Janet said, trying to make a lighthearted joke. She pressed a tissue to Rayne's nose.

"Never," Rayne said, not quite catching on. "Also, she'd never let someone like Loki get that scepter. It's too valuable to her."

"Rayne," Fury said, walking into the lab. "How you feelin', Kid?"

"Like shit," Rayne answered. "What's up?" She knew Fury wouldn't just walk into the lab to check on her.

"Pick up," Fury answered, hands behind his back. "He's an old friend."

Rayne pushed herself off of the metal table. "Rogers?" she asked, hopeful. She hadn't seen Steve since before he was picked for the serum. "How is that little guy, anyway?"

"Uh, bigger," Janet answered, removing her hands from Rayne's nose. "You're good to go, Nova." She pulled her white latex gloves from her hands, throwing them in the wastebasket.

Fury and Rayne stepped off of the quinjet somewhere in Brooklyn. She faintly remembered where they were, since just a couple of blocks north would take her to the alley that James found her in. The two stopped in front of an old boxing gym. It looked like it hadn't been used in the last thirty years.

Fury opened the door, letting Rayne go inside first. Upon walking in, she could hear someone hitting a punching bag. The punches got harder and faster the longer she walked around in the gym. Something moving around caught her eye. A tall, fit man was the source of the punching. His back was to her, so she couldn't see his face, but he had blonde hair.

With a hard punch, the man splits the bag open, spilling sand all over as the bag slid across the room. Breathing hard, he picked up another bag from the line of them on the floor and hangs it on the hook. He started up again until Fury spoke.

"Trouble sleeping?" Fury asked.

"Slept for 70 years, sir," the man replied, continuing to throw blows to the punching bag. "I think I've had my fill."

Fury slowly approaches the blonde man. "Then you should be out," he told him. "Celebrating, seeing the world."

"When I went under, the world was at war," the blonde man said, unwrapping one of his hands. "I wake up- they say we won. They didn't say what, or who, we lost."

"We've made some mistakes along the way," Fury said. "Some very recently."

"Are you here with a mission, sir?" Steve asked, unwrapping his other hand.

"I am," Fury replied. "But, I'm also here for a reunion." Steve sat down, looking at Fury, confused. Fury looked behind him to Rayne, signaling for her to come in.

Rayne walked in, finally getting a good look at the blonde man. It was Steve! Her head tilted as she peeked at him from behind Fury. "You've gotten taller," she said, holding a manilla folder in her hand.

"You haven't aged a day," Steve said, standing up. She handed Steve the folder, letting him read over it. He sighed, looking at the picture of the Tesseract. "HYDRA's secret weapon."

"Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you," Fury explained.

"He found me down there a year later," Rayne added.

"He thought what we think," Fury continued. "The Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs."

"Who took it from you?" Steve asked, handing the folder back to Rayne.

"He's called Loki," Fury informed. "There was a woman with him. We haven't identified her yet. They're- not from around here. There's a lot we'll have to bring you up to speed on if you're in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know."

"At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me," Steve said, getting up. He grabbed his duffel bag and slung another punching bag on his shoulder.

"Ten bucks says you're wrong," Fury bet. "There's a debriefing packet waiting for you back at your apartment. Is there anything you can tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know?"

"You should have either left it in the ocean or kept it with Rayne," Steve said as he walked out of the boxing gym.

"I mean, he's not completely wrong," Rayne shrugged. "The Tesseract is very complicated. Even I don't know everything she's capable of." Rayne held the file to her chest as she walked out of the boxing gym, onto the streets of Brooklyn.
