"this is stupid."
"shut up, chris."
"she's obviously not coming, matt!" chris groans, sitting further back in the passenger seat with his arms crossed as he is ridiculously tired and this is pointless.
"you don't know that," he denies instantly.
nick leans forward from his seat in the back. "it's rory," he deadpans, the group all knowing how she is when she's mad. "she's not coming."
"oh yeah," venus agrees from next to him, knowing how she was when she went to her house. "definitely not," she sighs, leaning against her girlfriends shoulder and pulling her phone out to scroll mindlessly.
matt just huffs and chris throws his arms out in frustration. "so why are we here!" he emphasizes, extremely exhausted and wanting to get the day started already so that it'll end faster.
it's monday morning and the group is parked outside of auroras house, due to matt's emphasis. they're on the way to school and matt is set on waiting for aurora and everyone else is tired. it's obvious she's not coming because.. come on, it's aurora.
she's the type of person to hold a grudge for years because she smiled at you in the hallway once and you didn't see her so you didn't smile back. she's beyond petty when she's unhappy with someone so matt kissing someone else while they're in an official unofficial relationship... god, chris doesn't even want to think about how auroras going to be.
"in case she does come," matt answers weakly, just crossing his arms as chris groans so loudly and nick flops back into his seat with a huff.
there's a full minute of silence as they stupidly wait for aurora before chris snaps and leans forward over to matt's side, suddenly pressing down on the honk button.
matt instantly sits up further in his seat and pushes his hand away, looking at him like he's crazy. "don't honk, you fucking idiot."
"you're the one who wants her to come so bad," chris rolls his eyes, retreating back to his seat. "how is she supposed to even know we're here?"
"i texted her."
"oh and what?" chris questions pointedly, a dubious tone to his voice. "she answered?"
matt pauses. "no..."
chris stares at him blankly for a second before suddenly shooting forward and trying to honk the car horn repeatedly again. matt is prepared this time though and pushes him to his rightful seat away from the wheel. "WOULD YOU FUCKING QUIT ALREADY?" he snaps.
"HOW IS SHE SUPPOSED TO KNOW TO COME, MATT? SHE WON'T EVEN TEXT YOU," chris yells back instantly.
"I KNOW SHE'S SEEING THEM. SHE'S JUST NOT RESPONDING, CHRIS," matt defends his reasoning, still speaking loudly even though it being unnecessary now. "SHE'S SUPPOSED TO COME ON HER OWN NOT BECAUSE OF YOU OBNOXIOUSLY HONKING THE HORN, YOU IDIOT."
"WHY WOULD SHE COME TO YOU WILLINGLY, MATT?" chris shouts back harshly.
yikes.
matt falters for a moment and nick senses that this is heading into an actual argument, beginning to sit up in his seat. "okay, chill," he says. "would you two stop and just fucking shut up already? goddamn, it's seven in the morning."
chris shakes his head, leaning back into his seat and speaking under his breath as he pulls his phone out, unbothered. "we all know i'm right. we're literally parked outside aurora's house like matt wasn't smooching becca fucking monroe just—"
"YOU KISSED BECCA?" from the way venus sits up abruptly and ravens jaw drops, it becomes apparent that aurora must've left that detail out.
matt's instantly groaning. "why is everyone making a big deal over who it was? does it seriously matter?" he crosses his arms like a pouty child, wanting the subject to be over with already.
raven, chris, and venus all look at the boy like he's an idiot. auroras hatred for becca monroe that goes all the way back to elementary school has been out in the open for as long as possible. they don't even know about the whole note thing, they just know how much aurora hates the ginger. it seems auroras the only person to know about the note.
"matt, are you genuinely fucking stupid?" chris deadpans, so done with this.
venus clicks her tongue. "we didn't even know aurora in elementary school but me and raven have still heard about how much aurora hates that becca bitch."
"okay so? that was literally an elementary school rivalry. i didn't think it would matter now," matt tries to defend himself, everyone just blinking at his attempt. "i wasn't even thinking about who she was when i kissed her!"
nick, who has been unusually quiet at the mention of the girl, speaks up with a shake of his head. "you're so dumb, matt."
although with his recent actions he would agree with his brother, matt still scoffs, "what is that supposed to mean?"
nick rolls his eyes and refrains from breaking out into a scream about how hello? there's a way fucking bigger reason why it being becca matters. instead, he just shakes his head. "nothing," he sighs. "can we just go already? she's not coming and we all know that. especially you, matt."
matt stays silent for a moment before ultimately turning to face the front and sinking back into his seat with a frown. he changes the gear switch and looks back so he can pull out of the driveway. at least he tried.
when the group arrives at school and goes to the auditorium for the free time they have before first bell like usual, matt chews at his fingernails and waits for aurora to show up. he internally prepares for the storm coming his way that he's created.
when the bell rings and she hasn't showed up, matt's heart begins to sink.
he goes to his first period class and struggles to focus on any of the work, his mind set on aurora. did she seriously not come to school today because of him?
he then goes to his second period class and taps his pencil against his desk repeatedly with his eyes set on the floor for the entire time, too busy overthinking about how bad the consequences of his stupid actions will be. what if she never talks to him again?
the bell rings and matt exits the classroom chewing on his lip. he has his free study period now with the entire group, including aurora. fuck, she's not going to come to the library is she?
she could though, he tells himself even though he knows the girl like the back of his hand and has faced her wrath many, many times before. she won't.
matt ultimately heads for chris' locker instead of going straight to the library, knowing he has first and second period with aurora and that he'll know if she's here or not.
he gets to chris' locker just as he puts his backpack away and shuts it. when he turns to find matt, he raises his eyebrows. "what?" he asks shortly, knowing he's here for some specific reason since they always just meet in the library's and since he's still kinda in a sour mood from his lack of sleep.
"is aurora here?"
chris blinks, taken aback for a second before recovering and blinking yet again. "yeah."
"oh," matt responds, taking a second to register how his heart skips a beat before immediately starting to ramble, "did she say anything? did she just shit talk me the entire time? did she mention the ross guy? did she—oh my god, did she not talk about me at all? did she just not speak to you because of me? how bad is it? is she okay? do you think—"
"she's fine, matt," chris cuts him off with a sigh.
"oh," matt says again, unsure of what else to respond with as he frowns. what does that even mean? "okay."
there's a small few seconds of silence before chris speaks, "alright so... can we go to the library now or...?"
"yeah, yeah, sorry," matt snaps out of it, the two turning and beginning to walk in the direction of their destination.
matt thinks as they walk, chewing on his lip yet again. right when he opens his mouth to ask something, chris senses what the question is and cuts him off before he can even start. "she's not coming."
matt sighs. "yeah, she isn't," he agrees, already knowing that. "do you know where she's going then?"
"i don't," chris answers truthfully.
matt can tell he's being honest and clamps his eyes shut in frustration for a small moment. "fuck," he mutters, just wishing he could talk to the girl already and find a bandaid big enough to fix this complete mess of a wound he's created.
chris' eyes soften for a moment as he glances over to see his brothers stressed out expression. he stops as they reach the entrance of the library and turns to him. "look, i'm sorry for being a dick earlier. i'm running on like three hours of sleep, bro."
"it's fine. i literally forgot about it."
chris blinks, sighing before going on. "i'm sure you'll find a way to fix this, matt. i know you've got it in you, come on, bro."
matt runs a hand through his hair anxiously for a moment at the topic before raising his eyebrows. "you think it's fixable?"
"matt," chris just deadpans. matt throws his arms out as if he doesn't get it. chris ultimately goes on. "it's rory. we all know she can keep a grudge since.. yknow... she's hated you since the end of elementary school for whatever reason," he trails off momentarily as he earns a nod from matt. "but under all the tough exterior.. come on. she wants you to fight for her obviously, you fucking idiot. just don't give up. beg on your hands and knees bruh. whatever the fuck type of shit you can come up with, do it."
matt's eyebrows are immediately raised. "woah, okay, buddy. look at you suddenly knowing every thing," he says sarcastically, clearing his throat and changing his tone when chris gives him a dubious look. "yeah, no, i mean.. i knew that. i was gonna fight for her anyways but it's good to hear the same idea from someone else."
"alright, kid," chris chuckles. "can we go in now or what?" he asks finally, referencing to the fact that they're in front of the library.
matt rolls his eyes but nods nonetheless.
when he walks past the same library shelves him and aurora kissed in between, he ignores the ache in the back of his heart and continues to walk to get to the very back shelves the group always goes to. god, he is so fucking stupid.
it's funny how acting on a heat of the moment feeling not only caused him to get the girl but also caused him to lose the girl.
him and his stupid fucking feelings.
aurora feels on the verge of death.
every single time someone even breathes in her direction she just wants to scream 'SHUT THE FUCK UP.'
aurora woke up in a decidedly bad mood today when the noise that interrupted her slumber was honking coming from outside her house. she was genuinely just going to skip school today but no, matt—matt, out of all fucking people—has decided to test her today. he really had the audacity to come to her house to pick her up for school, text her 'i'm outside,' and honk his fucking horn at her.
fuck him, fuck him, fuck him. she wants him dead. (she does not.)
when aurora woke up to the loud honking and turned her phone on to see the clear message from him, she threw the device so harshly at the wall that the screen shattered. now her phone is fucking broken. what a plus.
aurora is just overflooded with an extreme rage today. one wrong comment and she might begin swinging on random, helpless people.
she has been avoiding matt at all costs, not even wanting to see his stupid fucking face and his stupid fucking hair and his stupid fucking clothes and his stupid fucking eyes and his stupid fucking—she had just been avoiding him. that was clear.
during her pe class with chris, chris said he was sorry that matt was a dick and aurora said it was fine. she didn't want to take her anger out on him and he was clearly in some type of sour mood so the two just snuck behind the bleachers for the class. they sat there in a comfortable silence for the entire block period instead of doing the laps the teacher told them to.
for her free study period, instead of going to the library, she sat in the upstairs bathroom next to the hallway that only has two actual classes in it and watched 10 things i hate about you on her school chromebook. she also searched up local phone repair places.
the bell has just rung now, leading her to go to her business class. the class with the stupid fucking brunette boy who won't leave her brain the fuck alone.
she walks along to hallways with her school stuff clutched tightly against her chest. she doesn't even put up with people. she blatantly tells the slow walkers to 'hurry the fuck up' and shoves through people talking with their friends and just plainly standing in her way.
when she gets to the class, the door is closed. she's there like fifteen seconds before the bell rings because she had to come all the way from the second floor but she still takes a moment to glance through the small window of the door. she instantly spots matt in his seat. his eyes are focused on the floor in front of him and his knee is bouncing up and down under his desk. aurora begins to frown and instantly catches herself. she's the one upset, not him. so, she decides this will be the last time she looks at him today! she looks away and takes in a sharp breath before opening the door.
she keeps her head held high as she walks past the front desks to get to her desk in the very back. she feels his eyes, she feels them on her so clearly as they're practically burning through her but she doesn't even glance in his direction.
she remembers how she felt when he first ignored her and avoided her after they kissed for the time and yeah, he deserves this.
she sits down in her seat, nodding at the guy who's always sat next to her to be polite. he returns the gesture before turning back to his phone. aurora thanks the fucking lord she didn't get stuck with some loud ass shit head next to her.
the teachers still not in the classroom yet so it's loud as fuck and practically everyone's talking. aurora sighs and reaches for her airpods in her pocket. although her phone is legitimately broken right now, her school chromebook is not. she'll just have to listen to spotify through the web player website.
she opens her most recent playlist and puts it on shuffle and—skip. skip, skip, skip. she frowns as she rapidly skips through all the songs after they've played for a mere five seconds. why is every song in the fucking world taking her to the boy across the room from her that she refuses to look at?
after a moment of trying to find one, one singular song that doesn't have a lyric she could correlate to him, she frustratedly takes her airpods out and puts them back in the stupid case. she resists the urge to throw those across the room like she did her phone this morning.
she sighs deeply and rests her cheek against the palm of her hand, decidedly zoning out and resisting the urge to fall asleep.
about two minutes pass and aurora is now resisting the urge to bang her head into her desk and people start saying 'if fifteen minutes pass they can just leave.' what is this? middle school?
she pauses though when she hears the guy next to her say, "what?" since no one else is that close to their desks, she's furrows her eyebrows and is about to say 'i didn't say anything' but her words die on her tongue when she turns her head in his direction.
of fucking course, matt is standing in front of their desks. he's not even looking at aurora, he's looking down at the guy next to her. "i asked if you could move," he repeats.
aurora clamps her eyes shut in frustration immediately. there is no way.
"uh... why?" the guys eyebrows furrow since he's always sat in this seat, glancing over to auroras annoyed expression for a moment.
matt rolls his eyes at the hold up and answers, "because i need to talk to aurora?"
just the sound of her name coming from his mouth is making her somehow more angry than she was already. she stays silent though, just silently boiling as she stares at matt in disbelief who is still not looking back at her.
the guys eyebrows now raise to the top of his forehead as he glances at auroras state again before looking back to matt. "i mean.. why can't you just talk to her later?"
"does it matter?" matt replies, annoyance now becoming clear in his voice.
"yes..?" the guy responds questioningly since the class could literally start any second now when the teacher walks in.
"can you just move?"
"no?"
"bro, just move."
"why tho-"
"because i need to talk to my fucking girlfriend and you're in my way," he snaps, cutting him off as aurora jaw drops in complete and utter disbelief.
this man has really got to have some fucking nerve. she wasn't his girlfriend before but now that he's kissed some other girl and she won't talk to him, now she's his girlfriend? she can't hold back the urge to speak up anymore, she finally breaks. "i'm not your fucking girlfriend, matt," she says, not even caring about the other guys presence.
at this, matt finally slowly turns his head and meets her eyes, an unreadable expression on his face. aurora's expression however, is completely readable. she glares at him with such a fury that if looks could kill, matt would be a hell of a lot further than just six feet underground.
auroras eyes are narrowed into thin slits and although it feels like her stare is practically burning into him, he refuses to look away. he has to bare through this to prove a point to the girl.
the tension radiating from auroras harsh glare directed at matt is so much for the guy in the seat next to her that he takes in a breath and begins to stand from his seat. "actually, yknow what! maybe i will—"
"no," aurora cuts him off, eyes still on matt although she's talking to the guy next to her. "matt, you should go."
matt's jaw goes tight, not wanting to give up on this so easily, not wanting to give up on them so easily. the classroom door opens though and once he turns his head to see the teacher, his eyes roll into the back of his head and he mutters out a small, "fine."
to no one's surprise, the rest of matt's school day was not a great one.
matt didn't get a chance to speak to aurora again since he tried to in their class together. she didn't sit with the group at lunch which everyone understood, including matt even though him being the reason behind her sudden distance made him want to slap himself in the face.
who she did sit with was where kingston had sat at before he moved to sit with the rest of the group. she sat with kingston and his friends, including ross. ross, ross, ross. the guys suddenly appeared and completely ruined matt's life.
see, matt had a clear view of their lunch table from where he sat in the cafeteria and although there was always conversation going with his friends, he didn't indulge in any of it. he just couldn't take his eyes away from that table. where his girl sat across the room at a table with the guy who has completely taken her from him.
the stupid blonde fuck isn't even sitting next to her, he's at the other end of the table and still manages to stare at her the entire time. he has a dumb fucking grin on his face and matt knows he probably feels so smug, so happy about it all. matt hates this kid so fucking much.
he doesn't blame aurora. he hates that he can't blame ross. he blames himself because for fucks sake, he should've just asked aurora out or told ross that they were dating. they weren't dating but come on, they were together! they were together and now they're not and it's all so fucking stupid.
after lunch matt only caught two more glances of her. he got to see her when he passed by her in the hallway at the end of the day but she didn't even look in his direction. she won't look at him. and then he got to see a glimpse of her back as she climbed into elijah's car at the end of the day.
he's beginning to feel like he's lost.
but still, in case there's any chance he hasn't completely, he finds himself on auroras front porch, trying to summon the courage to knock on the door.
it's been an hour and a half since school ended and elijah's car is in the driveway so he knows she's here.
after standing in his own deprecating pile of self pity for a moment, he takes in a deep breath and wills himself to knock on the door.
he counts the seconds in his head of how long it takes for someone to open the door because he's so on edge and it takes aurora exactly 60 seconds to appear on the other side.
matt's taken aback for a moment at the sight of her actually being in front of him like he didn't take a full ten minutes to prepare for this on her porch. he takes in a breath and breathes out a, "hi."
auroras unreadable face does something for a moment before she sighs, "what? why are you here, matt?"
matt's face falls for a split second at her immediately agitated tone before running a hand through his hair and being straightforward. "because i'm sorry. i'm really, really sorry i kissed someone else and fucked every thing up," he rambles out, closing his eyes for a moment before muttering a smaller, "fuck, i'm really sorry, aurora."
aurora looks away from him for a second, her hand falling from where she was holding onto the side of the door and coming to cross with her other hand against her chest. her lips twist to the side for a moment before she looks back up at him. "look, i get it, okay?" her voice changes to something different and matt almost thinks he's got a chance. "you thought i kissed him because of what you saw and okay, that's understandable. but you shouldn't of just kissed gone and kissed becca because of it! you could've stayed for literally a second longer and you would've seen me push him away. you could've walked away and then asked me about it and i would've explained. god, i literally came to find you right afterwards, matt."
"i know, i know, fuck," he shakes his head at himself, chewing on the inside of his lip for a moment before speaking again. "seeing you with someone else just makes me crazy. i hate the way it makes me feel and it makes me want to do crazy shit and becca was there and i just—i'm sorry. i'm sorry, i'm sorry, i'm sorry," he repeats the word, practically pleading with the girl.
her eyes hold something he can't decipher and she's silent for a long few seconds before she sighs and breathes out a simple, "i don't understand you, matt. i've known you since forever so i should but i just don't," she tells him, his eyebrows scrunching together momentarily. "was it not clear enough? i didn't care about ross. fuck, if you go back far enough, i don't even think i cared about cameron. i just liked how it always made you mad."
"what?" his eyebrows furrow, confused. "what are you talking about?"
auroras eyes roll back into her head with annoyance before she exclaims, "oh my god, matt, i literally only ever wanted you! i told you at the stupid LA party that i was practically yours and it still wasn't enough for you to figure it out? why didn't you just ask me out, for fucks sake?"
"what?" his face falls completely, realizing all that he could've had right now if he read signs more clearly. "how was i supposed to know that?"
"i don't know, matt. you just were," she sighs breathlessly, looking away from his desperate eyes and to the floor in front of them. "it even doesn't matter anymore so it's whatever."
"what the fuck?" his face scrunches up, taking a step towards the girl so she'll look back up at him. "it still matters, aurora! i get that i fucked up, i get that i kissed someone else, but fuck, i was just insecure. i was being stupid. we can work through it. i'll literally do anything. you don't understand, i've felt this way since elementary school about you, aurora. i just—"
"since elementary school?" she finally snaps out of it, repeating his words in disbelief and pushing him back slightly by his shoulders to take back the step he took towards her. even though she's pissed, she doesn't push enough to harm him, she pushes just enough to get him in his previous spot. "oh, you are so full of shit, matt."
"oh my god, you can't start with this again," he groans, instantly knowing what she's referring to. "for the love of god, i don't know what the fuck you are talking about, aurora!" he exclaims.
"i know you do!" she instantly responds back, now taking a step towards him in anger. "i know it's why you kissed becca out of all fucking people. you always find the perfect way to get under my skin, matt!" she tells him furiously, beginning to shove her finger at his chest as she speaks her next words. "you do this every time! it's her every time! you act clueless every time!"
he stares at her silently for a moment before glancing down at her finger against her chest and grabbing it with his hand, slowly pulling it off of him as he calmly tells her, "aurora, i genuinely do not fucking know what you're talking about. i have never known what you're talking about. i don't know what happened on the last day of fifth grade. i don't know what i did and maybe if you just—"
he cuts himself off when she yanks her hand out of his aggressively and scoffs in disbelief. she takes a step away from him and he blinks in a mix of surprise and disbelief when she turns around and walks into her house with no warning. she disappears behind the still-opened door and matt almost assumes she's just walking away from him but she left the door open.
so, he stands there like a fool waiting for her to come back. he stands there for a full two minutes and he's about to just go inside when she finally appears again with something now in her hand.
he can't tell what it is by the way she clamps it up in her hand once she approaches him but he focuses on how she seems to be in a calmer state. she must've taken a second to just catch her breath.
she clamps her eyes shut for a moment and once she opens them and looks back to him, she breathes out a heartbreaking, "we don't work, matt."
matt instantly shakes his head in denial. "that's not true. i just—"
"you kissed becca to hurt me because you thought i kissed someone else and it's not supposed to be that way. it did hurt. it hurt a lot," she tells him calmly, looking down at her feet when she says quietly, "i just.. can't. i can't do this, matt."
matt's eyes soften from the now clear hurt in her voice and he takes a pleading step towards her. "aurora," he breathes quietly. "i know it feels like you have to do this because i messed up so fucking badly but you don't. you don't have to do this. we can work this out. fuck, aurora, i finally have you." he reaches out to take her hand that isn't holding anything so that she'll look up at him. her eyes clamp shut for a moment before she finally looks back at him. "please, aurora," his voice is a raw, desperate one. "i can't go back to before."
aurora bites on the inside of her cheek and clamps the thing in her other hand tighter. matt's thumb rubs across the top of her hand as his last pleading act before aurora pulls her hand out from under his and blinks repeatedly so a desperate tear won't fall out.
"i think i'm gonna give ross a chance," she finally speaks quietly, matt's face falling completely. "i'm sorry, matt."
"what?" it feels as if his entire world has shattered. "you can't be serious," he speaks in denial, taking a step back from her as he now feels an extreme lump in his throat. "where is this coming from?"
"i—i don't know," aurora struggles. "he just.. he seems like a nice guy, my step dad likes him, he—"
"your step dad?" matt repeats quietly, shaking his head as he is now the one biting on the inside of his cheek. "what? i just don't understand."
"i don't know. him, kingston, and mak came over a day or two ago and my dad ran into them on their way out and apparently he knows his dad or someth..."
matt stops listening to auroras explanation as he stares at the floor in between them that now feels like an entire fucking ocean. auroras step dad never liked him. he likes ross though since yeah, of course, he stopped by her house this weekend.
he doesn't know what to do, doesn't know what to say, doesn't know what to think, too focused on blinking away the sudden glassiness behind his eyes and swallowing the huge lump in his throat that only continues to grow. there's a crippling sense of defeat in his mouth and it's sourest thing he's ever tasted.
matt's snapped out of his trance when a small piece of paper comes into his view. he glances up at aurora, realizing she's holding it out to his chest. "here," she speaks quietly.
matt just continues staring at her for a long moment before finally looking down to the wrinkled and folded up piece of paper. it must've been wadded up multiple times judging by the wrinkles. "what is this?" he asks dryly, trying to hide the lump in his throat.
"a note from fifth grade," she answers.
"a note?" he repeats, gulping as his heart drops. "is it.. is it from me?" he asks quietly and dreadfully, slowly glancing back down to the paper in front of him.
"yes," she answers again.
"oh," he says, slowly grabbing it from her hands as his heart is now on the floor. this note is the reason she started hating him? this note he wrote? this note is the note? how did she even—
"bye, matt," her voice cuts his internal questions off.
he instantly looks back up to her as the door begins to close. "i—"
the door shuts and he's left all alone with his thoughts on her porch.
he stares silently and blankly at the closed door in front of him. if life was a video game, 'GAME OVER: YOU LOST,' would be written so clearly all over the screen right now. he kind of wants to fucking throw his controller at the tv.
the girl was only his for a couple weeks but it feels like he has not a single clue on how to go on without her being by his side anymore. his heart is aching in his chest and he's never felt such a hurt before. what is he supposed to do? how is he supposed to go on like how things were before when he knows how it feels to fall asleep with her in his arms, how it feels to get a real, genuine smile for her that only belongs to him, and how it feels to kiss her? how the fuck is he supposed to simply hand her away to ross?
he just can't.
he takes in a deep breath and suddenly remembers the paper in his hand. he looks down to it and clamps his eyes shut. how the fuck did she even get this note? he could've swore he still had it tucked away in the small drawer of the table by his bedside.
he ultimately opens his eyes again and sighs. he looks down to the note and brings it up to his view. he picks it up and turns it over to see who it's addressed to.
to: becca
his face instantly scrunches up and his eyebrows furrow tremendously. see, this is where he begins to grow a little confused.
what fucking note is this if aurora isn't the name written on the front?
