❝ ACTUALLY FUCKING ANNOYING ❞

the rest of the first week of the school goes by smoothly, nothing interesting really happening. on the wednesday of the second week, the group sits behind some bookshelves in the library for their study haul period.

"and then i fucking said to the mcdonald's worker — rory! are you even listening?"

"oh shit, yeah," aurora says, blinking repeatedly as she glances up from her phone and powers it off. "sorry, i've been playing eight ball with cam."

matt is already rolling his eyes at the use of the nickname. chris catches him doing it and laughs quietly to himself. he stops with a clear of his throat once matt glares at him.

aurora and cameron have been texting and playing all these different forms of imessage games since she got his number. all she does is rave about it to the friend group and smile at her phone while everyone else is having an actual conversation. it sours matt's mood every single time it's mentioned because seriously? cameron lockeheart? the most annoying person matt has ever met?

"cam," raven repeats, enthusing the word as she rests her head on her girlfriends shoulder.

"yes," aurora rolls her eyes, fighting a smile since she's decidedly earned the right to use the nickname. "cam."

matt notices the slight blush forming on her face and does not hide his loud scoff. aurora immediately turns to him and narrows her eyes.

see, matt has had no shame in expressing his hatred for cameron this past week. he has this known vendetta against him and auroras not sure why. he claims it's because he's the 'biggest asshole he's ever met' but she doesn't buy it for a second. literally what has cameron done to him? since matt already proudly hates aurora, it probably just pisses him off to a ridiculous extent to see her happy.

"anyways," she says, moving on from matt's disapproval and turning to nick next to her. "did you guys ever find his hoodie that i lost at your place?"

nick immediately presses his lips together to reframe from speaking and chris speaks up from across from her, "oh you mean the one that matt threw-"

"the one i threw into the washing machine?" he cuts him off, turning to shoot daggers at him through his eyes. aurora furrows her eyebrows as he looks over at her with a shrug. "i think it must've gotten mixed in with mom's clothes or something."

"or mixed in with the tra-" chris says something under his breath but matt shuts him up by patting his shoulder aggressively and giving him a tight-lipped smile.

"chris woke up a little later than usual. ignore him, he's just a little out of it today," matt explains, chris sighing loudly and leaning further against the bookshelf behind him.

"okay..." aurora says questioningly, dropping the subject once her phone vibrates. she picks it up and once she sees cameron's contact name, she grins instantly.

matt huffs. "can you not get off your phone for one second?"

aurora immediately sighs. she glances at him and narrows her eyes. "why's it matter to you?"

he shrugs. "your smile is pissing me off."

"aw," she grins, patting her hand over her chest like she's in a sort of adoration. after a second, she drops the sarcastic act and rolls her eyes before grabbing her phone again.

to no one's surprise, she's texting cameron for the rest of the period.

when the business class aurora shares with matt comes around, she notices he's in another mood. he's been so moody lately and she's not sure why.

she usually leaves him alone when he's like this, she might hate him but she's not cruel. she's not just gonna beat him when he's down. she's also sure that 99% of the time he's in a mood, it's because of something related to her and for some reason, she doesn't wanna make him more mad.

but when the teacher says their doing partner work today, she's a little screwed.

she immediately glances over at matt. he sits there leant down in his seat and on his phone, not paying attention to the class or instructions. the blonde girl that usually sits beside him is gone.

aurora sighs and begins to stand up. once she walks around her desk, the random guy that sits next to her look up at her. "do you wanna be partner for this?"

"oh uh," aurora frowns. the guy hasn't been rude or anything but she also just kind of... wants to talk to matt for some reason? "i think i'm gonna be partners with someone else, sorry."

"oh it's fine," the boy responds. she gives him a small smile in return before making her way over to matts desk.

he doesn't even notice her until she's directly in front of his desk. he looks up from his phone and at her, a sigh instantly leaving his lips. they haven't even spoken yet and she's already offended.

she keeps a calm exterior though, deciding to not give up on the reason she came over here. "can we be partners?"

"uh no," he immediately responds in a blank voice.

"what? why?" she asks, instantly growing offended. she actually asked him like a nice, normal human being instead of demanding he be her partner so why is he being rude?

"i'm partners with lauren," he shrugs.

"lauren?" she narrows her eyes.

"yeah," he glances over at the empty seat next to him before setting his phone down completely with a sigh. "she's using the bathroom."

"seriously?" aurora scoffs, now really offended. "you'd rather be partners with the blonde?"

"yeah?" he says questioningly, beginning to narrow his eyes at her. "i don't know why you sound so bothered. why would i wanna be partners with you?"

aurora falls silent, not knowing what to say as she doesn't really have an answer. he's right, the two do hate each other. she's now realizing she probably just should've been partners with the guy who asked her first.

matt continues as she doesn't say anything, "you were the one who said you didn't wanna be partners on the first day. you literally only want to be my partner now because there's no one else you know."

"that's not even true but whatever," she says, rolling her eyes.

"you know, you always do shit like this and it's actually fucking annoying." he just keeps talking as she looks at him.

"what?" her eyebrows furrow now, not even understanding what he's talking about.

"you only want shit when it works out for you specifically and it's one of the reasons i like actually hate you," he explains to her, shrugging once he's done speaking.

aurora immediately grows massively offended. "whatever, matt," she scoffs. her exterior is completely guarded but if you look past the scoff on her face, you can notice that she's actually hurt.

matt furrows his eyebrows now, beginning to regret his words as he hears a tone in her voice that hints he must've actually hurt her feelings.

as she turns around and walks away, her heart has this weird pang to it and she feels as if her stomach has sunk so much it's just a pit. sometimes she really, really hates the way he makes her feel, more than she hates him himself.

when she gets back to her seat, she puts her airpods in and turns her music all the way up. as she does the partner work completely by herself, she feels matts eyes on her throughout the entire class period.

she ends up texting elijah to pick her up from school so she doesn't have to ride with matt and when the time comes that she walks to his car instead of matt's, she can feel matts eyes follow her.

matt feels like shit when he notices he upset aurora so much it caused her to catch a ride from her brother instead of him. he hadn't meant to actually get under her skin, he just thought she'd shrug it off like usual.

when elijah asks aurora what's up, she just sighs. when they get home, she decidedly stays in her bed. along with boomer for the rest of the day.

he's always been great at spreading his bad mood to her.

the struggle of switching back and fourth between writing five different books in my drafts

but i finally have like 99% of the chapters for this book planned out which means i'll update more 🙏🙏🙏 i LOVE having chapters planned out in advance but also i cant rush it... i just have to let it come to me. so it's a struggle
