Mona flinched, glaring at Kai as he loudly slammed his bag down onto the breakfast table the next morning. Rubbing her temples irately, she wondered whether skipping the first day of term was a feasible option. The storm from the night before had cleared, but the ceiling of the Great Hall was still gloomy, reflecting Mona's mood straight back at her.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning," Kai chirped out, poking at the purple skin that darkened her under eyes. The boy mockingly gasped in shock when she harshly slapped his hands away, "Did you... you know?"

"No. Don't worry your perverted dreams are safe from the boogeyman." At his confused frown she simply waved her hand in dismissal, "Muggle thing, don't worry."

Kai hummed, shoving a piece of toast into his mouth as he scanned his schedule that Mona had collected for him, "Ugh double Transfiguration with ol' McGonagall first thing? That's got to be some form of child cruelty."

"There were literal dementor's surrounding the school last year," Mona shot him a deadpan look, "nobody in this school gives a toss about child safety. Especially with this whole death tournament thing."

"I don't know, eternal glory sounds like good craic doesn't it?"

Mona rolled her eyes as she scanned her timetable, stomach clenching at the sight of Divination in the afternoon, "Is eternal glory worth the risk of getting eaten by a manticore or facing off a Lethifold?"

Kai made a completive face, "Well?"

"I'm thinking about it."

Shaking her head, Mona swung her bag over her shoulder and beckoned him up, "Come on, if we lose points for being late on the first day we'll never hear the end of it."

Mona scurried over to a tired looking Kai as the two made their way to the North Tower. The smile on her face smug, "So... regretting taking Care of Magical Creatures yet?"

"That man is completely insane, he's got us looking after these complete freaks of nature!" When they made it to the ladder at the tower's entrance he turned his back and allowed her to climb up — standing in the way of anyone trying to go up after her. A system they had developed in third year after realising how impractical the ladder was for the people wearing skirts.

"I did tell you to take Ancient Runes with me, it really is quite useful."

Kai followed her up as soon as she was standing, "Yeah, but a class like that would actually require me to put in more than my signature brand of minimum effort."

Mona waved to Lavender and Parvati as she and Kai sat in the chintz chairs at the circular table beside theirs. She couldn't help but cough a little as her senses were clouded by the familiar musky smelling perfume, that fermented in the warm air that was exacerbated by the roaring fire. The curtains were as thick and dusty with disuse as they had been the year prior, and Mona distantly wondered if they had ever been opened. Or if the only light the room had ever known was that of the candles and cloth covered lamps.

"Good day," Professor Trelawney's misty voice greeted them as she appeared behind an anxious looking Harry Potter. Mona hid her smile in the palm of her hand as she watched the impending show.

"You are preoccupied, my dear," her voice was mournful, as it usually was when regarding the Gryffindor boy. "My inner eye sees past your brave face to the troubled soul within. And I regret to say your worries are not baseless. I see difficult times ahead for you, alas...most difficult...I fear the thing you dread will indeed come to pass-."

"-just once I want her to predict my death." Kai grumbled unhappily under his breath.

Mona shook her head. Though Professor Trelawney presented herself as a bit of a crackpot with enormous glasses that made her eyes appear too large for her face and an exuberant amount of beads, chains, and bangles that clinked noisily when she walked. Her predictions though seemingly senseless always seemed to hold a modicum of truth behind them. Mona, who had learnt how to control her Dreamwalking with the Professor's help, couldn't help but wonder if it was all just an elaborate act — much like the one the Headmaster himself put on.

The man was known for defeating the Dark Lord Grindelwald and yet he paraded around in austentatious robes, muttering about muggle sweets and other nonsensical things. Mona regarded the two with a subtle suspicion, still unsure of their motives for such behaviour. Yet she couldn't help but feel that the suspicion was returned back to her, at least from the illusive Headmaster.

Mona found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on the work they were meant to be doing on their star charts. The incense in the air seemingly weighed down her eyelids, but everytime she closed her eyes she found herself right back in front of that door.

She snapped back to reality at the right moment it seemed. Weasley's version of a hushed whisper waking her from her trance-like state, "Can I have a look at Uranus too, Lavender?"

"You can look at mine, Weasley. Although I must warn you, there's been a strange tingling sensation in there today." Kai sent the boy an exaggerated wink, the ginger boy's face and ears immediately turning a violent crimson.

Mona grimaced, looking Kai up-and-down, "You should probably get that checked out."

Unfortunately, Professor Trelawney appeared to have heard the conversation, and assigned the entire class a heavy load of homework, "A detailed analysis of the way the planetary movements in the coming month will affect you, with reference to your personal chart," she snapped, sounding much more like Professor McGonagall than her usual head in the clouds self. "I want it ready to hand in next Monday, and no excuses!"

Mona packed up her bag and went to leave when the Professor's voice sounded again, once again sounding like her usual airy-fairy self, "Miss Abbott, if you could stay behind for a moment my dear?"

She nodded at Kai to go on ahead as she sat herself on the familiar pouffe opposite Trelawney's desk, "I couldn't help but notice how dim your aura is today, are the exercises I recommended working?"

"Oh yes! They've been amazing, I haven't slipped into anyone's dreams since I got the hang of them," Mona smiled tightly, digging her nails into her palms harshly as she considered her next words, "what do you know about doors within the dreams?

Professor Trelwaney's features quickly became more serious than she had ever seen them, "Doors are a very powerful thing, especially for Dreamwalkers such as yourself. Your exercises before you fall asleep forces you to close a door to allow you to stay tethered to your own body and mind. I must warn you, it is imperative you do not attempt to open any doors while within your mindscape."

"But why?" Mona was sick of the cryptic answers the woman always seemed to spew, forcing Mona to spend a wasted amount of time trying to decipher what she was trying to tell her.

"When is a door not a door, my dear?" She shrugged her shoulders in dismay, not knowing the answer.

"When it's in your mind."
