THE GROUP sat around at John B's house after the Sheriff visited him that morning.

"Look, I'm callin' it off. All right?" John B annouced. "Peterkin said, if I stay out of the marsh, she'll help me with DCS."

"And you believed her?" JJ asked.

"Yes, I believe her, JJ."

"An actual cop, John B. You believed a cop."

"All I gotta do is stay out of the marsh for a couple of days, and she'll help me out. It doesn't help that your ass was the one shooting a gun."

"You know what I should've done? Just let Topper drown your ass," JJ told him.

"JJ, come on," Willow sighed.

"Topper was gonna drown me?" John B asked.

"Sure looked like it."

"Funny."

"Have you looked in a mirror?" John B did have a black eye.

"Tell me some more. Come on."

"They always win, don't they, man? Kooks versus Pogues. They always, always win! Goddamn!"

"Look, it's okay!" Kiara said.

"No, it's not okay!" JJ told her. "It is not! They don't want us to go down into the marsh. That means there's something valuable down there, and you know it." He pointed at John B. "I know you do. And I understand why you don't wanna go." He pointed to Pope this time. "You're the golden boy. You got way too much to risk. And you --" He turned to Kiara. "I mean, you're already rich as fuck anyway. Why would you bother? But me, Willow, and you, man, we got nothing to lose! We really don't, all right? And I know it didn't use to be that way for you."

"I don't wanna talk about this," John B told him. "I don't wanna talk about it."

"So that's it? John B, listen to me. I have a plan. You got the key to Cameron's big boat, right?"

"No."

"There's scuba gear. We borrow that, and then we go down to the wreck this afternoon, and that is what's gonna save you, man. You don't see rich kids going into foster care, do you?"

You know, I should have learned a long time ago to never listen to JJ. He's full of bad ideas, like stealing from my rich boss. But this time, he was right. I had nothing to lose.

"This is such a stupid idea," Willow muttered as John B tied the HMS Pogue to the Cameron's dock. "Why am I here?"

"Cause, like me, you've got nothing to lose," John B told her.

"Offensive. It's true but still offensive."

My dad said the island was America on steroids. The haves and have-nots like anyplace, but magnified and multiplied. The way I see it, the game's rigged. Maybe it always has been. No parents, money, and no one looking out for me. I got no chance...unless I make it on my own.

Willow helped John B carry the scuba gear out of the boat when, suddenly, Sarah Cameron appeard.

"Oh! Hey," Sarah greeted. "Are you two stalking us? Plotting your revenge."

"Yeah. Why don't you tell your daddy I blew the bilge on the Druthers," John B told her.

"We're just topping off these tanks," Willow lied to Sarah.

"Is he okay?" Sarah asked her, pointing towards John B. "The eye looks pretty gnarly."

"Well, maybe if your boyfriend wasn't so psycho is wouldn't have happened."

"Okay. Can we drop the whole Pogues versus Kooks thing?" Sarah asked as she followed Willow to John B's boat. "It is really stupid."

"You know, it's easy to say when you're a Kook," John B told her.

Willow watched as Sarah raised two fingers in a salute before flipping the two off.

"This is empty. You guys took empty tanks?" Kiara asked as she observed the tanks the two stole. They were currently sitting in the middle of the marsh so it was a bit too late now. "Okay, this one's a quarter full. It's enough for one of us."

"Love it when a plan comes together," Pope said.

"Does anybody know how to dive?"

"It's kind of a Kook sport," JJ told her.

"I... read about it," Pope told her.

"Great, Pope read about it, so someone's gonna die."

"Look, y-you put the thing in your mouth and breathe. How hard could it be?"

"If you come up too fast, nitrogen gets into your blood, and you gets the bends," Willow told her brother.

"Bends like, bend over and..." JJ trailed off, doing this weird bend-y thing.

"The bends kill you," Pope said.

"Right."

"I can-- I can dive," John B spoke up.

"You can dive. I'm cool with that."

"Since when can you dive," Kie asked him.

"I'll do it. It's fine."

"Let me do some calculations real quick," Pope said. "That boat's about thirty feet down. So it'll take 25 minutes at that depth. Which means you need to make your safety stop at about... ten feet. All right? For two minutes."

Kiara stripped off her shirt before jumping into the water.

"What was that all about?"

"I don't know, but I liked it. A lot," Willow muttered.

"Uh... so, uh, when you're down there, you look for the cargo hold," JJ said, clearing his throat. "You stick this thing inside and twist and pull, okay? My dad moved weight back in the day."

"Hey! I tied my t-shirt to the anchor chain about ten feet down," Kiara said as she surfaced again. "It's where you need to do your safety stop."

"Keep your eye on this. You need to make sure you have enough air to decompress," Willow told John B, pointing towards the air gauge.

"Okay, how much do I need?" John B asked.

"Unclear. Breathe as little as possible."

"Zen. Think zen, you know?" JJ told him.

"Yeah. Got it."

"Hey, if we get caught in the marsh, we're basically screwed, so... better get a move on," Pope said.

Kie walked up to John B and kissed him on the cheek.

"Diver down?"

"Diver down."

John B saluted the group before disappearing below the water.

"Shit," Willow muttered when she heard the sound of a siren as a police boat approched them.

"Guys, that's the police," JJ said.

"Just act frickin' normal," Kiara said.

"Evening officers," Willow greeted as the boat pulled up beside them.

"How you kids doing?" Deputy Shoupe asked. "You know the marsh is closed?"

"No. I didn't know that."

"Why -- Why is it closed?"

"Well, we're conducting a search out here. A boat went down. Seen anything?"

"No boats. No."

"Where's your friend you always hang with? He here?"

"He's working," Kiara said.

"Hm. I'm gonna check your little boat out."

"Yeah, hop aboard," Pope said.

"You got another one?" Shoupe asked, holding up a life jacket.

"Of course. It's, uh, it's in the hold."

Willow held her breath as Shoupe walked over to look into the water.

"All right. Beautiful day. Let us know if you see anything on your way out."

"We'll be gone soon, sir," JJ said as the officers started up the police boat and started to leave.

"He's definitely out of air," Pope said as they all searched the surface of the water for John B. Just then, he surfaced.

"How'd it go down there?" JJ asked. "Did you find anything?"

"Did I find anything?" John B asked as he took the mask off. He handed JJ a bag before pulling himself up onto the boat.

"Yeah, there we go! That's my boy!"

"You okay?" Kie asked.

"Yeah, I ran out of air."

"You scared the shit out of me."

"Yeah, the cop's were up here, but, uh... took care of 'em," Pope told him.

"Hey, guys? Guys, bogey, two o'clock," Willow spoke up as she saw another boat approaching them.

"Do you recognize that boat?" Pope asked.

"I've never seen it," Kie said.

"What are they doing here? Marsh is closed."

"Lets not stick around and find out," JJ said.

"JJ, get the bowline," John B said.

"Should we wait on 'em?" Pope asked.

"No, we're not. Go get the stern. Go!"

"JJ, hurry up," Willow said.

"Are they coming for us?" JJ asked.

"Maybe they're fishing," Pope suggested. John B started up the boat and steered away, trying to escape the fastly approaching boat.

"Hey, guys, they're following us," Kiara said.

"Gun! He's got a gun!" Willow shouted right before a shot rang through the air and they all dropped to the ground. "I'm too pretty to die!"

"Not the time, Willow!" JJ shouted, not in the mood for her jokes.

"It's how I cope, JJ!" She watched as Kiara got up and picked up a fishing net. "Kie, what are you doing? Get down!" Kie threw the net into the water and they watched as the other boat stalled out.

When they got back home, the first thing John B did was open the black duffle bag. They all gathered around and watched as he tried to open the metal containter inside. When he finally got it open, he dumped the contents into his hand. There, in the palm of John B's hand, was a compass.

"I almost died for a compass," Willow sighed.

"Dude, what? It's not worth anything," JJ said when he noticed John B's shocked face.

"This was my father's."
