𝕵une hasn't been here since two days, yet Maddie has showed up to the Hugheses' house every day.

It first started with Cassie asking her to be around so that they could get to know each other and be the normal ones in a house full of guys.

And then it turned into something more.

It got addicting.

It's been so long since she's hung out with a huge group of friends this way, how could she ever resist?

Even if Trevor is always there to make her feel all sorts of ways, it's still worth it because he's been behaving, surprisingly.

Keeping his distance and only really communicating with her if it's to make her laugh.

And she loves that.

She fucking loves that.

He makes her laugh so much. She'd honestly forgotten how funny he is.

She does cry herself to sleep on some nights because she misses him so much — it's weird how someone could be right there in front of you, smiling and joking and talking to you but they're not really there, not like you want them to be. You can't touch them. You can't say what you really want to say. You can't pull them down and feel their lips again. You can't call them yours again.

They're there but they are also not there and it hurts. It hurts so much that it's almost like you can feel your heart breaking every second that you're forced to pretend you don't want to them to do what they used to, say what they used to, touch you like they used to.

So, yeah. She cries herself to sleep a lot.

But then she wakes up feeling like a new person and decides to go have fun anyway even if by the end of it, she'll be left feeling worthless.

"You're staring".

She side glances at the amused blue eyes watching her from their position by her side on the table.

They came to the country club today and it's been fun in the sense that she's spent the time making fun of Cole's golfing skills then gossiping a little with Cassie and watching Quinn and Cassie interact, very very closely.

"And you're not?", she raises a challenging brow.

He shrugs, grinning.

"You know I am".

The staring in question is taking place while Quinn and Cassie debate across the table at lunch over some TV show they've both started watching recently.

It's hard to miss the way Quinn deliberately lets her win their arguments and it is even harder to miss the way Cassie's smile grows every time he speaks passionately about something that either really annoyed him or really made him happy.

"Think we need to help?", Madeleine finds herself asking without even thinking about it first.

Trevor's grin widens.

"I love how you think, Mads. Of course, we need to help".

"We all need to leave them alone then. Conveniently be out of the house at the right time".

"I can find a way to accidentally lock them in a room together".

She snorts, eventually laughing.

"You need help".

He giggles, "Do you not approve?".

She pretends to think, "Kinda seems like a good idea. It's still insane though".

"It's not insane if two people think it's good".

"You guys ever consider therapy? It's so much better than this".

They both turn to Cole gazing at them as if they've both grown horns on their heads.

Alex chuckles, "Couple's therapy might work".

Madeleine squints, "No one's involving you two. Shut up".

"We're involving ourselves. Because you two are lowkey crazy", Cole remarks pointing at them as he settles back.

Trevor sighs loudly.

"This is a private discussion".

"Don't talk about it in front of us then", Alex comments.

"Why? If it's so weird, why don't you tell them?", Madeleine grins watching Alex roll his eyes because she knows she's got him there.

Both Cole and Alex have kept quiet about their scheming because they agree with them. They're just too lazy to actually help so they're always silently cheering them on and acting like they themselves are perfectly normal the rest of the time.

"It would be too much work", Cole mumbles through the food in his mouth.

"What isn't too much work for you?", Trevor scoffs.

"Hey, now. Be nice. Or I'll stop being your caddy for the rest of the summer".

"You lost a bet, Caufield", Trevor leans forward, grinning, "Better keep up your end of the deal or there will be consequences".

Cole blinks, half fuming and half amused and goes back to eating leaving Maddie and Trevor to look at Quinn and Cassie again, and devise their plan in peace.
