𝕯inner was an interesting affair.

Madeleine can't remember the last time she laughed so much while also actively trying not to let an embarrassing rush of pink coat her cheeks every time she caught Trevor staring at her with a stupid little smile.

She frowned at him several times but he never let up.

It was almost like her frowning was amusing to him.

She also noticed something else which made her bite down on a smile in the middle of conversing with Cole.

Jack, who sat with his arm casually lain over the back of June's chair, seemed to have a hushed conversation with her every time the others were distracted.

Having sat right on the other side of June, she could catch bits and pieces of the conversation.

And it continued to escalate in entertainment as the evening went on and June got more and more drunk on the wine she kept forcing Jack to order.

She knows there's something going on between the two, it was pretty obvious and she could see it the moment June hauled her in to inspect a pair of earrings at the beach.

It makes her feel so warm inside because she knows how much he means to June.

At least someone's happy.

Speaking about happy . . . .

"Really glad you decided to stay".

Madeleine's eyes trail up from the ground landing on a weirdly adorable looking Trevor who'd somehow managed to fall in step with her as the group now walks back to the beach parking lot.

She inhales sharply, biting her lip.

His eyes follow the action and that once again makes her feel . . . something — something that she's longed for so long that it now feels painful — and so she resorts to frowning again.

"I didn't stay for you".

"Oh, I know", he nods, stuffing his hands in his pockets, his soft golden brown hair lightly fluttering in the breeze as a small curl dangles over his forehead.

He looks like a dream.

She hates feeling this way, hates that her body still has such a reaction to him, hates that even after everything she can't stop herself from looking at him and feeling like he's the most beautiful thing she's ever seen.

It makes everything so much worse.

She decides to change the topic.

"So", Madeleine clears her throat, turning her gaze to June walking ahead hand in hand with Luke while Jack chats with her, their arms occasionally grazing.

"What's up with them?".

Trevor lets out a low chuckle and she feels it everywhere.

"He's in love with her but he's still in denial which is kinda entertaining if it weren't for the fact that June's clearly obsessed. He needs to get his shit together and just admit it already".

Suddenly, talking to anyone but the man currently walking beside her feels like the best thing in the world.

She's not sure why but there's a lump forming in her throat.

"He's in love with her?", she asks quietly, keeping her eyes straight ahead.

Trevor stiffens at her tone, continuing to walk beside her in an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds before speaking again.

"Yeah, it's obvious".

Madeleine only nods.

They remain quiet until she spots her rental in the parking lot and loudly wishes everyone a good night before practically sprinting off to the car.

She unlocks it and quickly sidles in, locking her up away from the real world so that she can calm down.

And tear up in peace.
