Y/n and DeWanna were polar opposites, especially on the court. Y/n was a very passionate player. And sometimes she got a little heated on the court. She was probably one of the biggest trash talkers in the league, right behind Alyssa Thomas. And, despite her sister being good friends, and teammates with Thomas. She didn't like her. They bumped heads on the court every single time. Not even five seconds into the game and Alyssa would always find some way to piss y/n off.
Now, y/n had been playing for eleven years. She came in the league same time Alyssa did, so naturally there was always some competition there, even throughout college. Given, Dewanna's close friendship with her, when they would go on trips she had to endure 3 days with her. It was painful, she'd say. Maybe she was dramatic, but still, she hated being around Alyssa outside of work.
Unfortunately for her, it was only gonna get worse. 2025 was a new year, and y/n knew her sister's days were numbered in the W. She wanted to be her teammate again, one last time before she hung up the sneakers. So, she made the very difficult decision to leave Minnesota to play for the Indiana Fever beside her sister. And yes, it was going good, for the most part. Up until troubles came, and disagreements were had, and DeWanna decided to request for a trade. Y/n wasn't sure what the hell to do. She decided to stay with the Fever, commit to her contract like DB encouraged her to. Up until, her own troubles came up.
Those troubles had nothing to do with her playing time, or her teammates. Well, at least not all of them. It came out of nowhere really. Naturally, there was tension because of her sister's exit but she brushed it off. Her teammate Sophie Cunningham couldn't seem to do that. It happened after the Connecticut game. Y/n didn't respect the way Sophie handled the situation with Jacy. She pulled her to the side to talk about it, and as a vet she thought Sophie might respect that. But no. She argued with her, made comments about her lack of importance to the team, and of course, made claims that y/n was just there to sabotage the team on behalf of her sister.
Y/n put in her request that night.
They waived her just a couple days after her sister. It left a bad taste in other player's mouths. The sister's were very well respected in the league so to see them be treated that way wasn't a good look. Y/n didn't take it hard. She was chillin'. She packed up her stuff and moved back to Phoenix to be closer with her sister who told her she was gonna sign with Phoenix because Alyssa encouraged her to instead of letting her season go to waste.
Now it was time for them to convince Y/n, and it was gonna take a lot of work to do that.
Well, at least for Alyssa, she didn't think it'd take a lot.
It was their off day, and of course they decided to spend it bothering y/n. Her mood turned sour the second she saw Alyssa walking up those stands. She rolled her eyes, trying to focus on her daughter who was on the court playing her heart out. She had her daughter in high school, and ironically it was the first and only time she ever had sex with a boy. She used to blame it on her sister for telling her to experience it before she made any decisions on her sexuality. But truly, she wouldn't change a thing. She loved her daughter.
Now, her daughter was 14, turning 15 soon. She played for the girl's basketball team in middle school, and was also team captain. Y/n stood up, quick to shoot some encouragement her daughter's way. "Use that strength! You got this! Stay focused!" Her daughter motioned for her teammate to set a screen and ran past her, diving into the paint and pushing a girl down to get a clear look at the bucket. Alyssa grinned proudly, that move reminding her of herself.
Y/n's nieces, DeWanna's daughters were quick to cheer their cousin on. She sighed, turning to her sister and Alyssa. "What do y'all want?"
"I came to see my niece play." DeWanna scoffed, clapping her hands as her niece shot a free throw.
Her eyes narrowed in suspicion, "why you bring her?"
Alyssa rolled her eyes, "there you go with that attitude." She turned back to the game, watching the girl's play. "Don't even start wit' me. Talkin' 'bout my attitude like I'm your girl." She scoffed, and Alyssa chuckled in amusement. "You wish you was. You wouldn't be so uptight."
Y/n's eyes widened, looking at her sister, "DeWanna, do you hear yo' friend?" It wasn't the first time Alyssa made comments like that. She shrugged, "she ain't wrong," she mumbled under her breath. She was definitely all for it. She knew AT had a thing for her sister. It wasn't nothing new or surprising. They'd be perfect together if y/n got over her petty beef she had with her. She peeped the times y/n would stare at AT a little too long, or try not to smile at something flirty she said.
Y/n shook her head, fed up with the both of them. "There you go enablin' her behavior." She huffed, paying attention to the game, trying to ignore how close Alyssa was. There was far too much space on the bench for her to be that close. Her daughter had the girl guarding her slip up and fall with her dribble and step back, hitting a three to get them up by fifteen. "You teach her that?" AT asked.
"I teach her everything," she answered.
"You could teach our rookies a couple things if you join the team." Alyssa inserted, DeWanna holding back a chuckle because they agreed to convince y/n at dinner, not the game. Clearly she wanted to get an early start at it. Y/n scoffed, "seriously? Y'all came to do this at my daughter's game?" AT shrugs, "nah, we was thinkin' dinner, but you know I like gettin' to the point."
"I don't, actually. Please, enlighten me." She retorts sarcastically.
Alyssa chuckles dryly, leaning closer to her ear so the twins couldn't hear. "It wouldn't be very appropriate to say at a kid's basketball game. But don't worry, I'll tell you later if you let me baby." She wanted to roll her eyes but noticed her daughter waving at her so she had to smile and wave back as if Alyssa hadn't just said what she did. She was used to this. The flirting. She was convinced Alyssa was just trying to fuck with her. It couldn't have been genuine.
I mean..even if it was, she wasn't gonna go for it.
Right?
"I told y'all, I ain't joinin'." She dismissed, standing up to clap as the game ended. She walked down the bleachers, AT following and noticed a girl on the other team come up to her daughter. They looked to be arguing, and just like her mother, she was gonna back down and let her be disrespected. It got loud in there quick. Y/n was grinning and Alyssa was rushing over to pull her daughter back after seeing her fist clenched up at her side. "Walk away. She ain't gon' do nothin'."
She glanced up, finally noticing it was AT and grinning. "AT! What are you doing here?!" She hugged her excitedly, this making y/n slightly annoyed. It was like everyone in her family loved AT but her. Maybe something was wrong with her because she wasn't seeing it. "I came to see my favorite girl whoop everybody. I seen you use my move out there, Little Engine." She giggled, nodding her head, "yeah, these girls wasn't ready for me. I got muscles like my momma."
Y/n grinned, pulling her over, "yeah you do." She wrapped her arms around her daughter with a proud smile. "You killed it out there. I'm proud of you babygirl." She pressed a kiss to her head, the girl jumping excitedly. "Thanks momma! I get it from you."
After the game, they went back to DeWanna's place for dinner and everyone seemed to have a good time except for y/n. It probably had something to do with everyone ganging up on her to join Mecury. They even got the kids input. Her daughter was all for it, as were the twins. As they were leaving, Y/n carried her sleeping daughter to the door. She lived a couple floors up from her sister, and ironically in the same building the majority of the team do.
"I'll walk you." Alyssa stated, voice firm enough to leave no argument. She agreed, too tired to argue anyways. "I know why you don't wanna keep playin' this season," she spoke, following the mother down the hall where the elevator was. She wanted to roll her eyes and not entertain this, but part of her was curious to how well Alyssa paid attention to her. "Why is that?"
"They said somethin' to you, and you can't let it go 'cause you're wonderin' if it's true." Y/n didn't like that. She did not like that she knew that, that she figured that out. The elevator lifted, bringing them up to her floor as AT turned to look at her, hands tucked into her pockets. "It's not true. Whatever was said. It ain't true."
"And how do you know? You don't know me." She brushed her off, stepping out of the elevator. Alyssa scoffed, following her down the empty, quiet hallway. "You think I don't pay attention to you? I know you. I probably know you better than you know yourself." Y/n scoffed again, unlocking her door and pushing it open. "You don't know shit 'bout me. You think you do but you don't. Everybody think they know me."
Alyssa smiled, following her inside and shutting the door quietly. Y/n left off to the room, tucking her daughter into bed. She ventured back into the living room, finding Alyssa looking at the bookshelf that had many pictures framed. A lot of them were from basketball, her time in Minnesota. Then some of them were family photos. One of them stuck out. A picture of y/n in her high school jersey next to a boy in his own jersey. She recognized him. The father of y/n's daughter. But she never seen any current photos of him.
"Was you in love wit' him?" She asked, y/n not entirely sure why she was still here. "No. We just dated for a couple months. I was figuring my shit out." Alyssa hummed, glancing at the other picture, it was y/n holding her daugher after giving birth, the father not anywhere to be seen. She knew why already. DeWanna had told her. He wasn't ready to be a father, and wanted to take his education seriously. All he did was paid child support and let y/n raise the child herself. "You still figurin' your shit out?"
Y/n hated that question. She never had an answer for it. Her love life was complicated. She knew for a fact she did not like men. But, she wasn't entirely sure if she liked women either. She was attracted to them, yes. But she had never been intimate with one. Don't get her wrong. She tried, many times, just to chicken out at the last second. It's why she was never in a relationship. The no sex was a deal breaker for a lot of women, specifically masculine ones because she leaned more towards them.
Alyssa noticed her change of attitude and grew a little concerned. "What's wrong?"
She shifted uncomfortably, hoping Alyssa wouldn't make fun of her, not that I'd be surprising if she did. "I've never been intimate with a woman before." Now that was confusing. Lyss could've sworn she seen y/n going out with many women over the years she had known her. It was hard to believe she hadn't had sex with a woman at 33 years old, for someone who was said to be a lesbian since college. "You never had sex wit' a girl?"
She shook her head, "nope."
"You basically a virgin then." Alyssa comments before turning back to the pictures. Y/n scoffed, "excuse me? No. I am not a virgin. I have proof of that." She chuckled, glancing over the picture of y/n and her daughter with Courtney and Natisha after Connecticut were finals bound. "How many times you had sex that wasn't an experiment?"
Y/n rolled her eyes, walking over to plop down on her couch. "Whatever. I don't need you judging me. I'm fine with my lesbian virginity."
"Oh I wasn't judgin' you. I'm just curious." Alyssa took a seat on the couch across from her, a little smirk on her lips as she looked her up and down. "Is it a medical thing? Religious thing?" Y/n shook her head in response, pulling her pillow on her lap. "No. I just don't have sex. I'm not a sexual person."
"You're lying. You scratch your wrist when you lie." Y/n glanced down at her wrist, noticing she was scratching it and quickly stopped, hiding her hands under the pillow. She tried to ignore the fact that Alyssa noticed that tiny detail but it was a little hard. All these things Lyss knew were beginning to show she cared, she paid attention. "You can't be tellin' nobody cause then I lose my rep. Last thing I need is people usin' it against me. And by that, I mean you..and Courtney. She got a big mouth."
Alyssa chuckled, nodding her head in agreement, "yeah she do."
She got up, making her way to the kitchen and Alyssa was quick to follow. "I'm just...I don't know. I guess I'm scared. I mean the first time I decide to do it, I wind up pregnant. It also just changed my body forever so it is what it is." She reached into the cabinet for a glass, Lyss watching her as she leaned against the counter. She didn't understand it. "I like your body."
That caught her off guard just a bit, but just having an actual conversation with Alyssa this long was shocking enough. "Is that supposed to make me feel better about being a pussy?" Alyssa chuckles, shaking her head in objection. "You're not a pussy. I was scared my first time too. Everybody is. You just let it hold you back longer than most." Y/n sighed, pouring herself a glass of red wine. "I love that you're being so nice, but it's not foolin' me. I'm not joinin' yall. I'm done with basketball this year. I'm done for the season. Y'all don't need me."
"I need you." Her eyes shot back up to Lyss, the woman making her way over, setting her hands on the counter, y/n caged in. "We need you. I don't give a fuck what they said to you 'cause it's not true. You are important. You matter. I see that. I want you to see that. So you tell me what I gotta do to make you see that." She wasn't playing at all, and that was clear. This wasn't her tryna fuck around like they usually did. She was serious, and it was so fucking hot.
"I don't know where all this is comin' from but...it's not gon' work. 'Cause I know you like my sister, not me." Now that genuinely caught Alyssa off guard. She was baffled. "I'm sorry- what did you just say?" Y/n rolled her eyes, hating when people made her seem like she was crazy. "Oh don't do that. Don't make me out like I'm crazy. The only reason you put up with me is 'cause of her. I'm just your back up 'cause you know you can't have her."
"That's just- wow." Alyssa laughed, not believing she just heard that. "Okay, um, please, give me some examples 'cause I know you can't be this oblivious. I've had a thing for you since college." She deadpanned, leaning in just a bit closer, arms still caging her in so she couldn't go no where. Her head shook in denial, letting out a nervous breath, "no..no, you didn't."
"You want me to prove it to you? 'Cause I can. I ain't got nowhere to be." This time, she stepped into her space, bodies pressing against each other, faces just an inch or two apart. "This ain't gon' get me on the team." She whispered, not even sure she believed herself. She was conflicted, okay? One minute she couldn't stand Alyssa. The next, she was internally begging for Lyss to kiss her so she could figure out if she liked her or if she was just horny. Maybe it was both.
"I'm doin' this for me. Not the team." Alyssa spoke smoothly before hooking an arm around her waist to bring her in and press her lips to hers. It wasn't an aggressive kiss but it was slow, passionate, and hungry. Truthfully, this was the best kiss she had, like ever. Lyss tried to be respectful with her hands but ended up sliding one just a bit lower to place on her ass. She didn't grab it, yet. But she wanted to.
Pulling away for air, she was out breath and Lyss was hungry for more. "Still ain't joinin'."
"That's fine. You can cheer me on courtside." She brought their lips back together, the kiss growing more aggressive and hungry. She was gonna make the most of this before y/n got all in her head again like she always did. "I ain't nobody's cheerleader," she mumbled back against her lips. "Then stop sittin' back on the sides and actin' like one," she shot back. Of course they were arguing while kissing. That was least surprising thing about all of this.
"I ain't doin' that," she scoffed, hands going up to gently caress her jaw.
"Looks like it. You actin' like you ain't got no backbone." She pulled away, almost getting lost in her eyes before she snapped out of it, getting back on topic. She didn't want to see her girl knocked down. She wanted her to thrive. And to do that, she needed to get her to start playing again. Whether that was for the Mercury or somewhere else. "You gon' let some little bench warmer disrespect you like that? Huh? You think she better than you?"
Her words lit a fire in her. She knew what to say. She knew how to bring that fire out of her. She was one of the few who could. "Hell nah. She ain't got shit on me. She don't know who she playing with. My stats longer than her extensions." Alyssa grinned, there she was. That trash talking girl she has a thing for. "So what are you gon' do about it? You gon' sit around watchin' her play in your spot or you gon' come back and show that team what they lost?"
She stared into those brown eyes of hers, realizing this is what she was missing all along. She needed to feel seen, to be heard, and Alyssa did that. She had been doing that. And she was only realizing this now. "I'mma show 'em what they missin'." She wasn't sure if she was talking about the Fever or Alyssa. Two things could be true at once. And she wanted, no she needed to show, and see what she had been missing out on.
Alyssa knew what she wanted. She could see it. She could feel it. The tension was thick. "You want me to stay?"
She took her hand and led her out of the kitchen, providing the answer she was looking for. "We have to be quiet." Alyssa smirks, "you mean you gotta be quiet." Y/n rolled her eyes, pulling Lyss into her bedroom and shutting the door behind them. "Don't make me regret this, okay?" Alyssa's eyes softened as she turned to her, taking her hands to bring her closer. "Take a breath, baby. I'm ready whenever you are and if you aren't, that's fine. I won't ever do you wrong."
She took a breath, and nodded slowly, "I'm ready. I trust you."
Lyss slipped her hands beneath her shirt, and y/n lifted her arms for her to pull it off. "Look at me." She tilted her chin up, keeping her eyes on hers. "Always, look at me." She brought their lips back together, her body pinned against the door. Y/n grabbed onto her hoodie and they broke away to pull it off. Y/n brought their lips back together, high on her kiss. She couldn't believe she let some petty on court beef stop her from having Alyssa all to herself.
In a quick second, Lyss was pulling her over to the bed with her strong arms and laying her down. She gently pushed her legs apart to get between them, hand sliding up her leg to grip her thigh. She slipped her hands under her sweats and tugged them down her legs, right along with her panties. Y/n didn't stop her. Why would she? She wanted this. She asked for this. She wasn't scared. She felt safe with her.
Her kisses trailed down her thighs, still ignoring where she wanted her most. Alyssa glanced up at her with those gentle, caring eyes, reassuring her of what she needed. "I'mma take care of you, baby."

Rumors spread in the W fan bases. Rumors of y/n signing with the Phoenix Mercury. It was confirmed that morning by the Phoenix Mercury and eventually other sources. She signed August 6th. Alyssa didn't want her to rush into it, so she took a couple weeks off to get back into rhythm. Though, this didn't stop nosy W fans from their suspicions. They watched the Mercury players posts, catching y/n in some outings sitting with AT all the time.
All Star Weekend is what really confirmed suspicions for the fans. Specifically, the Studbudz twitch stream. Anytime they caught Alyssa on camera, y/n was glued to her side. Sometimes they'd catch them holding hands in blurry clips or photos. It wasn't much to go by. Until, Azzi's party. Paige had gathered them to take a picture on the couch. This picture included NaLyssa, with DiJonai on her lap. Paige, with her girlfriend Azzi on her lap. And finally, Alyssa, with Y/n on her lap. That was all the W fans needed to confirm that relationship.
August 7th was Y/n return to the court, and it just so happened to be against her former team, Indiana Fever.
The Phoenix coach loved her already. He decided to keep her on the post with AT because they already built a lot of chemistry on the court. She fit in perfectly with the team and their plays. It was safe to say she was going to have a very important role on the team. Y/n loved hearing that, especially given the mindset she had going into this game. She wanted to prove herself. She wanted to show them what they fumbled. She especially wanted to get back at Sophie. And of course, Alyssa was encouraging the hell out of it.
The game was starting, and Coach had already made y/n a starter. She walked over to greet Kelsey, sharing a hug with her. She didn't have no bad blood with her, or most of the fever players really. It was mostly Sophie. Even before being her teammate, she never respected her. There was far too many times Sophie would take cheap shots at her on the court.
Just two minutes in, y/n went for the rebound and got tangled with Aliyah. They called for the jump ball and y/n still yanked it from her hands to pass it to the ref. Alyssa hit her hand, praising her for standing her ground and not letting Aliyah take that rebound. She even won the jump ball, hitting it up to Kah for the possession.
Towards the end of the 1st, Alyssa set a screen after passing it up to Y/n. Sophie was on her, she took a step back to hit a three as AT kept her out of the way. On the run back, you know y/n had to run that mouth. "What you got to say now?" Just as that happened, Aari tried to pass to Mitchell and Alyssa caught the steal and took it all the way. She ran to y/n, finding Makani and Sami on the way. Y/n grinned, hugging her for a quick second, not too long 'cause they were on camera. They didn't like all that PDA. They were very private people.
"You like that?"
Y/n chuckled, nodding her head as they walked back to the bench. "You don't even gotta ask. You know I like that."
They got to the 2nd quarter, Sophie coming back in and hitting two back to back triples. Of course she decided to run her mouth towards the y/n like she didn't hit those threes over an entirely different player. Y/n laughed, clapping with her, "go ahead, celebrate that lil' career high! I'd be proud too if I hit double digits off the bench!"
The 3rd quarter came, about four minutes in, y/n was guarding Boston and to no surprise, she threw an elbow out in the paint. Y/n fell down to the floor as the whistle was heard. Alyssa caught the ball from hitting her and quickly called over one of their medics. "Fuck." Y/n groaned, taking her girlfriend's hand and letting her pull her up. "You good?" She nodded, grabbing onto her jaw. She didn't wear mouth guards, but now she was considering it. "I'm good."
"Yo, I need some ice." Alyssa rubbed her back as she walked back over to the bench. They got her some ice and she pressed it onto her jaw, the medic checking in with her as coach went over the play. The cameras panned to her on the big screen, Lyss right beside her rubbing her back.
They got back into the game, and Sophie hit a three and made a comment at y/n again. She glanced at her daughter who was sitting courtside with her friends who she brought to the game. The last thing she was gonna allow is to be embarrassed in front of her kid. She walked over to the bench, taking a seat beside her sister and Kah. "I ain't lettin' her get another point." Alyssa switched seats with Kah, leaning in to her girlfriend's ear to add a little motivation there. "Then prove it."
DeWanna glanced at them with a side eye, "y'all are evil."
Y/n smirked, sharing a look with her girlfriend. "I prefer the term passionate." DeWanna rolled her eyes with a smile, happy that they were finally together even though they tended to be a little much on the court.
She did exactly what she said she was gonna do. She didn't let Sophie get a single point for the rest of the game. It got so bad Stephanie White wasn't sure if she should keep Sophie in the game. Y/n was embarrassing her out there. It got the team all hyped up. Her sister was hittin' those big shots. Kah was hyped. Satou was on a roll. And Alyssa was ending the game with her 3rd triple double in a row. The score was 60-95.
"Remember this feelin' every time you see me! Who ain't important now?!" Y/n called back to Sophie as the Fever team were exiting the court. Lexie and some of the staff had to turn Sophie around to keep her from going back in forth in a fight she wouldn't win.
Back at home, they were left alone in their place as DeWanna agreed to let their daughter stay the night so they could have some alone time. Y/n climbed over her girlfriend's lap, disregarding the movie playing as they were laid up on the couch. Alyssa smirks, instantly sliding her hands around her waist and lowering down to grab her ass. "What's this?" Y/n smiles, gently caressing her girl's shoulders and sliding down to her biceps. "I just wanna thank you for pushing me to come back. I love you."
"I was supposed to say that first." Alyssa shot back playfully bringing a smile out of her. "I love you so much. I'mma always take care of you and your family." Y/n pressed a peck to her lips, her words bringing so much needed reassurance. "Our. Our family." She corrected softly. Lyss smiled, brown eyes gleaming with happiness. "Our family."
Y/n smiled playfully, messing with the seams of her tank top. "You still got a thing for me?"
"I'mma have a thing for you for the rest of my life." Alyssa smirked, bringing her down to connect their lips in a slow kiss.
"That's what I like to hear."
