"You played in Connecticut for your last year so I feel like maybe you should take her under your wing. You also just better wit' rookies than I am." Y/n nodded, sipping her coffee as she and Skylar spoke in the lounge. "Yeah, I hear you. I'll take care of her. You focus on your game mama."

Skylar leaned over to hug her, "love you babygirl."

She pressed a kiss to her cheek, returning the hug. "Love you too. You still owe me a chocolate muffin though." Skylar laughed, getting up from her seat to leave. "I will buy you one tomorrow so you can finally shut up about it." Y/n grinned, arms stretched over the rest. "I'll be waitin' for it."

"Make sure you pick up the rook. Don't make her pay for no Uber. You know the traffic here bad as fuck." Skylar added, receiving a thumbs up in response. Y/n sighed, getting up from her spot and grabbed her keys. She knew where the rookie lived 'cause the majority of them lived in the same building.

Training camp started today, and she couldn't have the young ones being late.

She pulled up the building, letting Jordan know she was there. She scrolled her phone, the two walking over to her car. "Dibs on front seat." Nika pushed Jordan out of the way to get to the door first. She pulled open the door and stepped inside, sitting at the passenger seat as Jordan was kicked to the back.

She set her phone back on the stand, turning to look at them. "You're late."

Jordan furrowed her brows, checking the time and it was 3 minutes over. "By three minutes."

"I said 12:30 sharp. It's 12:33, and I've told you this a million times. If we're even the slightest overtime, we'll get stuck in traffic." She said, already pulling out of the lot as Jordan looked to Nika for help. As the newest addition, she most definitely had a free pass. "I'm so sorry. I was having trouble finding my keys. It was all my fault," Nika said sweetly.

She nodded slowly, focused on driving. "It's okay. You're new. You'll learn..hopefully better than Jordan."

Jordan sighed in defeat, "I deserved that."

Nika smiled, Jordan trying to talk to her as she just stared at y/n. She used to have a crush on her but it went away with time. She had only talked her a couple times and that was when y/n showed up at a some UConn games. Otherwise, they didn't talk much. But everytime she seen her, she got butterflies. It was embarrassing. Y/n was older than her and would probably never ever look at her in that way.

But she couldn't help it. She was just so fucking fine. And her age? That wasn't stopping her from plotting. She was getting her one way or another.

She didn't say a thing the whole drive but it made sense because she was a focused driver, especially in traffic. Y/n stepped out and waited for them to get their stuff before locking her car up. "Hey, Rook. Come here." She gestured her over and Nika quickly left Jordan's side to join hers. "Yeah?"

Y/n slung an arm over her shoulder, Nika smiling to herself as she looked at her. "So, I'mma let you know now. Skylar is a very...how do I say this? She's a very passionate player and teammate. She can come off as aggressive, and she'll probably curse you out, but that's just her way of showing she cares. Don't take offense to anything she says. She means it with love. And uh...if you see Sky get into it with someone, just keep quiet. I'm like the only one who can calm that lady down."

"I understand. I can handle getting yelled at." Nika assured.

"You don't gotta worry too much though. She goes easy on the rooks." She patted her back before separating from her.

They made Nika guard y/n on her first day. She was more than baffled. Of course she studied every aspect of y/n's game, in college and the pros, but it was nothing compared to guarding her in real life. She was probably one of the fastest guards there. She handled the ball extremely well and even had Nika shook up on some plays. She felt embarrassed.

When it ended, y/n was staying back longer to keep practicing. Jordan caught a ride with Jewel, and Nika, well, she insisted on staying back. She walked onto the court, watching y/n working on her dribble. She had far too many turnovers today so that was not good. She stopped when she noticed the rookie walking over. "I thought I told Jewell to take you home."

"I wanted to stay back." Nika explained.

Y/n nodded, silently appreciating that. She liked when rookies stayed back to keep working, trying to make themselves better. Nika knew that. It's the main reason she stayed. "How did you feel about the way you played today?" She asked.

"I felt like I could do better. But, I also felt embarrassed because I feel like I trained for this in UConn. I mean..I watched all of your games in UConn. I studied the way you handled the ball, the moves you make, and still, I defended you like a middle schooler." Nika spoke, being fully honest with her. If she wanted to get better, she would need advice from y/n.

"I appreciate your honesty. And yeah, I agree. But you do need to give yourself some grace. It's just the first day. You'll catch on and improve as we go. For now, I want you to focus on stuff you feel like you can improve." Nika nodded, staring directly into her eyes which made her look away a lot. She couldn't tell if it made her nervous or not. "I wanna focus on defense right now, and I would love if you could assist in that."

"Absolutely. I got you, rook." They started off in the middle of the court, a 1v1 with y/n guiding her through it. "Now eye contact is really key as a point guard. I don't like pushing off, so I use my eyes, I use my dribble. For example, I'm looking to my left, you're gonna think I'm passing it out or asking for a screen. And what I'm actually gonna do is fake out, go to the right and drive to the basket."

"How do I stop that without drawing a foul?" Nika asked, focusing on her movements but keep her eyes steady on y/n's face.

"You can do a lot of things. You can pressure me to rethink the drive by not letting me get any space to get past you. You can pressure me into passing it out. Or, you can pick my pocket." Nika chuckled nervously, "I don't think picking your pocket is possible. Only like two people have done that to you and it's Skylar and Kelsey Plum."

"You just said it yourself. It's possible. I'm not even friends with Plum and she always knows how to pick my pocket. If she can do it, you can do it too. You've trained with her before. You know what she looks for." She said, causing Nika to sigh, not believing that. "Yeah, but she's one of the best PG's in the league. I'm a rookie."

"So? I was a rookie once too. Guess who's pocket I picked? Maya Moore." She pushed the ball into Nika's hands, moving her behind the line. "Come on. I'mma show you how. Show me what Geno taught you." Nika nodded, eyes filled with determination as she dribbled the ball. She got ready for the drive and y/n easily picked her pocket, knocking the ball out of her hands like it was easy work.

"Do it again."

Nika raised a brow, "seriously? You just knocked it out of my hands like I offered you a smoothe after cheating on you." Y/n bit back a laugh, loving how specific that was but she was trying to take this serious. "Do it again. I'm not gonna ask twice."

She sighed, picking up the ball to start again. It ended the same way. The ball hit from her hands like it personally offended her. "Do it again."

She dribbled the ball, y/n in a defensive position. They were eye to eye. "I'm watching every single move you're making. Look at my eyes. I know what you're gonna do." Y/n said, subtly telling her exactly what do to. Nika knew she was gonna go for the steal when she got ready for the drive. So, she went for the drive with her opposite hand, catching y/n by surprise. Y/n still chased her, jumping up to block her shot.

"Oh come on!" Nika groaned, a smile still on her face 'cause she was able to trick her.

"I got love for you, but I ain't lettin' a rookie score on me." Y/n deadpanned, getting a new ball 'cause the other one was too far away from the block.

She sighed, "fair enough."

"Now, take what you learned from that and try to pick my pocket." Nika nodded, getting into a defensive position as y/n dribbled the ball. She was a lot harder to work on. She handled the ball so well it was nearly impossible for her to slip up. After a couple unsuccessful tries, she slowly caught on. The second y/n tried to trick her by acting like she was going left, she switched the ball right and Nika hit it out of her hands to grab the steal.

Y/n ran after her, grabbing onto her and lifting her up so she couldn't get close to the basket. Nika laughed, "come on! I deserved that!"

She shook her head, "and you still let me catch you baby." She set her down, Nika still bubbly with excitement that she picked her pocket. As y/n collected the ball, she couldn't help but let her mind linger on the name. She heard her call everyone baby during practice. It was just something she said. But, she just felt like it was different. "I like when you call me that." Too bold?

She chuckled softly, "alright, I'll call you that more often then."

Nika knew she was just being nice, being a good supportive vet. And she liked that, but she wanted more of a reaction than that. She felt delusional because y/n wasn't showing an ounce of interest she was. And there was no chance her crush was going away anytime soon. So she had to sit in this. "So, are you like single? I feel like I don't much about you outside of basketball." Good job. Keep the conversation going. Sneak your way into her personal life.

"Uh, yes, unfortunately I am."

"Really? I thought you were engaged?"

"I was. I called it off a month ago. He uh, he was drunk and he hit on Sky at the engagement party. She told me and I called it off just like that. Ain't seen or talked to him since." She didn't seem super fazed either, which Nika picked up on. She was trying to act cold and nonchalant but she could tell she was pretty hurt by it.

"Are you interested in talking to him at all? Like, closure?"

She shook her head, knocking in a three. "Nope. Not at all. I got my closure when he tried to hit up Sky after I broke up with him."

"What? That's insane. The audacity-"

"That's what I'm sayin'! Like, bro, it ain't even been a week and you over here hittin' up my married best friend? That shits crazy. That turned me off men so bad. I'm so tired of bein' done dirty." Nika nodded, a small smile on her lips 'cause she was hoping that meant she was also for the girls. "Yeah, you deserve so much better."

"Thank you. I do. I'm too fine for that bullshit." She scoffed, shooting another three from the rack.

"Way too fine," Nika whispered under her breath. "So uh...you like girls now? Since you're done with boys?"

"Oh I've always liked girls. I had a girlfriend in high school and college. I literally transferred to UConn in my fourth 'cause we had a nasty breakup and I didn't wanna see her on campus. She was a little...scary. Like wreck your car with a bat scary." She chuckled, shooting another three. She looked back at it with smiles and laughter now but back then it was serious.

"Oh, my God. What did you do to her?"

She frowned in offense, "why you assumin' it's my fault?"

Nika shot her a look, "you're telling me it's not?" She deadpanned.

She sighed, shooting another three and missing terribly. "She uh, she didn't like how close me and Sky was and I didn't really do anything to reassure her. So yeah, I'll take the fault on that. But the jealousy was crazy 'cause Sky had a whole boyfriend."

"Before I say anything- how close were you and Sky?"

"Uh- I feel like that's not fair though. Me and Sky literally grew up together. So obviously...we like did some stuff.." Nika raised a brow, the conversation growing a lot more interesting. "What kind of stuff?"

"Alright, you can't say nothin'. Sky would literally kill me."

Nika crossed her heart, "I will not say a single word. I'm very good at keeping secrets."

"Okay, so like, when we was younger, we were too scared to experiment with other people so we just did it with each other. Deadass, Sky was my first kiss. In college, we shared a dorm but Sky liked to sleep in my bed sometimes. And when I told my girlfriend, she got in her head about it and started accusing me of being in love with Sky. Which is ridiculous...but I can understand how our situation didn't make it seem any better."

Nika hummed. It did explain a lot. And..it made her a little jealous. "Just to clarify, you aren't in love with Skylar, like..at all?"

She chuckled, shaking her head in response. "Not at all. That's my bestie."

"Alright, so her craziness was kinda justified."

Y/n snorts, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I guess so. I should've done a lot of things differently."

"Now that you're single, are you into hookup culture? Or do you just go on normal dates?" Nika queried. She had all her questions thoughtfully planned out with all of y/n's responses. She knew how to get her to talk, and maybe share a little too much information. "Nah, I feel like I'm too old to be fuckin' around like that. Even if I did, I catch feelings too fucking fast. I'm easy as fuck like that."

Nika smiled, catching y/n's rebound and passing the ball back to her. "I wish I could relate, but I love a good hookup."

"As you should. You're young. You ain't gotta worry about settlin' down right now." She shot a three, missing it and Nika caught the rebound and passed it back. "What's your type though?" She asked, Nika smiling because she knew she was gonna ask that and she had a perfectly planned answer. "I'm not gonna lie. I have a huge thing for older women."

Y/n laughed, taking a pause from shooting to laugh. "Oh, my gosh. Nika!" She grinned, turning a bright cherry red. "Are you talkin' 40s, or like, my age?"

Nika smiled sweetly, "yours."

She chuckled, picking the ball back up and shooting. "So you like me?"

"What if I did?"

She took a breath, offering the rookie a smile. "I'd be very flattered." Nika bit back a smirk. Progress. That was definitely progress.

"But, realistically, have you ever actually gotten with an older woman?" She was genuinely curious. She wasn't sure if Nika was just one of those girls who talked about it but would never actually doi it. "I haven't...but I am currently plotting on one."

She cracked another laugh, "well damn, I hope you get her."

"I will."

Three more weeks passed.

Skylar sat down on y/n's couch, a cup of coffee in her hands. They had an off day and Skylar needed time away from the kids and husband. And y/n needed time away from Nika. "How's it goin' with the rook? She's improved a lot under your wing."

"It's goin' good. I like that I'm able to help her transition into the W as smooth as she can." Skylar nodded, laying her legs over y/n's lap, her hands immediately going to rest on them. "I see that. She's not getting many minutes but it's nice that you're keeping her active and ready for whenever she does get minutes."

"Yeah, I'm not gonna lie and say it's not frustrating. I feel like coach could definitely give her more minutes. I mean, how else is she supposed to improve if she's not getting playing time? I can't keep staying late at practice keeping her ready if it's not amounting to anything. That puts a lot of stress on my body." She was still new to Seattle, so she wasn't exactly gonna start running her mouth about it to coach. It made her so much more appreciative of Skylar.

Skylar nodded, completely understanding where she was coming from. "What do you think you should do?"

"I don't know what I can do. I ain't tryna step on nobody's toes. You know I like it here. Ain't tryna jeopardize that." Skylar smiled, leaning over to wrap her arms around her. "You like it 'cause I'm here." Y/n grinned, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "Always braggin'."

"My bestie love me," she bragged, pressing some pecks to her cheek and hair.

"You so cocky it's crazy."

"Don't act like you don't love it."

Her phone buzzed under her and Skylar furrowed her brows, arms still wrapped around her. "Who's that?" Y/n turned on her phone and checked the messages Nika sent. "Uhm, it's Nika. She's getting us food."

"Why?"

"I don't know. She just be doin' whatever."

Skylar raised a brow, "you don't think that's a little weird?"

"Nah..I mean, she just likes doin' that stuff. She likes gestures." She took her eyes off the phone to look at Sky. She knew immediately when something was wrong. "A'ight. Something's botherin' you. What do you wanna say? Speak your mind."

Skylar sighed, finishing the rest of her coffee and setting it on the table. "The other day during practice when we was doin' the halfcourt shots, I made mine and jumped onto you, right?" She nodded, recalling that moment. "I'm not even joking when I say Nika was starin' me down the rest of the day. Like..a jealous stare. And it's not the first time. Anytime we show each other affection, she looks at me like I stole somethin' from her."

"I'm confused..you think she's jealous of our friendship?"

"No. This is more than friendship. I know you got trouble seein' that shit but I see right through her little facade. She clings onto you because she wants you, not 'cause you're her favorite vet." Skylar explained, hoping it got through to her. "Maybe you're right. But it's probably just a crush. I had a crush on one of my vets before. That shit goes away. She'll let it go."

Skylar sighed, not buying it for a second. "If you say so. But you better tell that girl to stop glarin' at me 'cause I don't play like that. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt 'cause that's your little rookie. You know I don't like yellin' at them babies."

"I'll talk to her." She chuckled, pressing a kiss to her head.

Skylar yawned, resting her head on y/n's shoulder as the movie kept playing on the tv. "How you tired? You just drank coffee." She shrugged, yawning again, which caused y/n to yawn next. "Stop yawning. You're making me yawn." She chuckled, patting her cheek, "you'll live babygirl."

Halfway into the movie, the door was being knocked on. Skylar moved her legs off of y/n to let her get up. She walked over to the door and pulled it open. "Hiii. You look so pretty with your hair like that." Nika said, stepping inside and kicking off her shoes. Skylar raised a brow from the couch.

"Thank you." She took the bags from her hands so she didn't drop them.

Nika smiled, spotting Skylar looking at them from the couch. She waved politely, "hi Skylar."

Skylar waved back before turning to the tv, "that girl plottin'," she mumbled under her breath.

They brought the food over the living room, Nika giggling at something y/n said. Y/n handed Sky her food first, making sure she got everything she needed. When she went to sit down, Nika purposely sat down right in between them before she could. Skylar hummed, "thanks for the food, rook."

She smiled, "you're welcome."

"So uh, what are you doing here on your day off?" Sky asked.

Nika wore a tight smile, feeling just how condescending Skylar's tone was. Don't get her wrong. She had respect for the vet on and off the court. But if she kept this investigating up, she was gonna ruin her plan. "Well, Jordan was busy and I don't really have many friends here so, I figured why not spend my time with y/n? She's pretty nice to be around." Was it a complete lie? No. But did Jordan invite her out? Yes. So it wasn't fully the truth.

"I am?"

Skylar snorts, looking back at the tv as Nika insisted that she was. "Of course you are. You always make my day."

Sky tuned out their conversation at some point, focused on eating and finishing the movie. There was maybe like five minutes left when she completely fell asleep. They didn't even notice. Until she started snoring. Nika raised a brow, "I thought she said she didn't snore?"

"She calls them accusations." Y/n mused, getting up from her spot.

"What are you doing?"

"If she wakes up on a couch with a sore neck and back, she'd kill me. I'mma go put her on my bed." Y/n explained, scooping her off the couch. Nika followed her to the bedroom. She laid Skylar down and pulled the covers over her. "Where are you gonna sleep?" She asked.

"Next to her." She walked over, flipping off the lights to let her best friend sleep.

"Do you cuddle?" Nika asked, making it sound jokingly but internally, she genuinely needed to know. She chuckled, shaking her head as they walked back to the living room. "No. She kicks a lot, hogs the blanket, and spreads all her limbs out like she's on a cloud. Cuddling does not exist with her. And the only occasion it does is when one of us is crying. Otherwise, I'm waking up with a bruise."

"Good to know she's an aggressive sleeper as well," Nika chuckles, feeling a lot better about that detail. She knew Skylar wasn't a threat like that but you also never really knew. People switched up all the time. She might wake up one day and realize she's in love with her best friend. You never know. Nika had to be cautious.

"Come on, I'll walk you back to your place." Y/n offered and Nika smiled, quickly slipping on her shoes to follow her. She only lived a few floors below her. They got to her place and Nika unlocked the door. "Oh, I gotta give you your hoodie back. Come in, I'll go get it." She actually had no plans to return it but she needed to act fast. She knew Skylar was catching on and if she found out, she'd encourage y/n to take a stepback.

Y/n took a seat on the couch, waiting patiently for her. She came back with the hoodie over her shoulder. "I do wanna talk to you about something though." Y/n voiced, taking the hoodie as Nika sat beside her, awfully close. "Skylar expressed to me that you've been like..glaring at her sometimes. Which, I personally haven't seen but that's what she's seeing and I just wanna make sure you don't have any problems with her 'cause I know she doesn't have any with you."

Nika nodded, eyes filled with understanding. "I understand. I don't have any problems with her. I think I just have a resting bitch face or something. I'll definitely make sure to apologize and clear that up 'cause it's not intentional at all."

Y/n sighed in relief, glad she cleared that up because it was bothering her. "Yeah, see I figured that. I know you don't get down like that."

Nika smiles, setting a hand on her knee, arms brushing as she looked at her. "You know me very well." She chuckled softly, "I do."

"How's it going with the uh..older woman you're plotting on? You made a move yet?" Y/n asked, folding up her hoodie on her lap, not noticing the way Nika was looking at her. "It's coming along very well. I'm dying to make a move."

Y/n set the hoodie beside her and looked at Nika. "So why don't you make it?"

"What if she rejects me?"

"Why would she reject you? You're gorgeous, you're funny, you have such a vibrant personality, and the most infectious fucking laugh. Who wouldn't want you?" She was being genuine, because she really did think that about Nika. She was a really good person who was very deserving of love. She was beyond happy for the girl.

Nika was beyond overjoyed. She thought her crush was bad before, but after she just said that? It wasn't even a crush anymore. She had to have her. It wasn't a want anymore. It was a need. "You really think I should make a move?"

"Absolutely. You gotta go after what you want."

That's all she needed to hear.

Nika climbed over her lap, grabbing onto her face and smashing their lips together. Y/n didn't know what to do, her hands gripped the couch, not sure what do to with them. But God, Nika was such a good kisser it would be wrong not to kiss her back. As soon as she did, Nika deepened it, grinding her hips into hers. Y/n pulled away first, staring up at the rookie, completely taken back, "...you were plotting on me, weren't you?"

Nika smiled sweetly, "I'm surprised you didn't catch on."

"Um..I don't- I can't do this with you. It's just not right." Nika didn't buy a single word she said. She couldn't even look at her. If she meant it, if she really didn't want it, she would've stared her dead in the eyes.

Nika pulled her shirt over her head, a pretty black lace bra underneath that made y/n's breath hitch. She leaned down, breath fanning over her cheek.ย  "Nobody has to know. It can be our little secret. I know you want me, y/n." She took her hand and slowly guided it up her body to her chest, y/n not fighting it at all. She was fucked.

Why was she so fucking easy?

"Fuck it." Y/n pulled her down, connecting their lips again, trailing them down her neck. One hand found her waist, the other groping her chest with no shame. Nika's sounds were so soft, so angelic and perfect. It was addicting. She couldn't stop. She didn't want to stop.

Nika got exactly what she wanted.
