It was an entertaining night to say the very least, for WNBA fans in the US. Y/n knew about the draft expansion for the Valkyries, but she was currently overseas so the time difference prevented her from knowing at the exact moment. So, waking up from her sleep with the news that she was drafted to the Valkyries was definitely shocking. She had really thought the Seattle Storm would protect her, but apparently not. And in a way, she was a bit grateful for that because there was a lot of drama going on that she really wanted no part of. It was relieving to get a fresh start.
Fast forward to moving day.
"Are you seriously recording me?"
"Yes! We need to document this for your future biopic," Nika said as if it was completely obvious- and it was to her. She was really going to miss Nika's optimistic self. "I'm flattered, but aren't you supposed to be helping," she retorts, pushing a stack of three boxes onto the moving dolly. "I am helping. I'm gracing you with my presence," Nika replied, smiling as Jewell walked back in after carrying some boxes down to the U-Haul.
"Wonderful motivation, Niks," she shot back sarcastically, chuckling in amusement. Nika smiled brightly, "you're welcome."
Jewell took some more boxes as Y/n ran over to the kitchen to pick up her phone that continued to ring. She answered it and of course Nika rushed over to listen. "Hey girl, I'm with your dad and we're about ten minutes away," her friend Cassie said. "Okay, we're about halfway done here but we still got lots of ways to go. I did not realize how much stuff I actually had."
"That's 'cause you got a serious hoarding problem."
Flash forward to her first night in San Francisco, California.
It was definitely fitting that she got drafted to the Valkyries because she was originally from the bay area. It felt a lot like she was finally getting represent where she grew up...and it was closer to her parents so that was nice. Her best friend lived in SanFran too, so they were literally only five minutes away from each other.
"I missed it here," y/n mumbled, looking over the view as she and Cassie lounged on her new balcony. "Even the smell of fish?" Cassie retorts, and they laughed lightly, she nodded, "yes, even the smell of fish."
"You don't miss Seattle not even a little bit?" Cassie questioned in disbelief. "Not really. I mean- it was always pretty lonely there. I pretty much only got on with a couple of the girls but even then, it's not like I knew anyone outside the team," she explained with a small shrug of her shoulder. "That's crazy. I feel like your first team should always be your home, ya know? Hopefully you can make the Valkyries your home."
"Let's hope with the free agency, they don't sign anyone I hate," she joked and Cassie chuckled, nodding in agreement. "With your luck, they'll sign someone you fucked."
"Okay chill, I'm not like the WNBA whore," she shot back defensively, but her smile just showed she was more amused than offended. "Well...you did get around in college," Cassie pointed out. "That doesn't count- everyone gets around in college, and most of them don't even make it to the league anyways."
"If you say so," Cass hummed, taking a sip of her drink.
Her phone went off a few seconds later and she quickly picked it up after seeing it was an email from her head coach Natalie. "Oh, my god. Cass- I'm gonna kill you." Cassie frowned in confusion, "what are you talking about? What did I do?" Y/n tossed her the phone to check herself, "you spoke it into existence! This is a problem."
Cassie still seemed very confused even after reading it. "Uhm...how is this a problem? It's just Kelsey Plum. I thought y'all always got along. You should be happy they signed her. Isn't she like one of the best guards in the league? They could use that on the team. Why are you being so weird?"
Y/n sighed, taking an inhale and exhale, "you're right. This is good for the team. Uh, I'ma get ready for bed."
Cassie quickly got up to follow her inside, grabbing her hand to stop her from taking off to her bedroom. "No, no, no, this conversation is not over. There's something you're not telling me." She dragged her to the couch and pushed her to sit down. "What is it? Did y'all have a falling out I don't know about? Did she diss you? Did y'all get into it during the season last year? I'm extremely confused. Spill."
"You remember how I played in the Olympics last year?"
"Yes? Is that what this is about? Did y'all get into a fight there?" Cassie rushed out, eager to hear the tea, even though her assumptions were all wrong.
"Quite the opposite actually," she mumbled under her breath but Cass caught onto her words and frowned, her brows scrunched in thought. "Wait...no, this is confusing. Are you implying what I think you're implying? 'Cause that would make no sense. Kelsey is like straight- she said so."
"She wasn't straight that night," y/n hummed, her mind going back to that exact night.
โ flashback
Team USA had just won another one of their games and were on their way back to the Olympic village after celebrating their win at some fancy restaurant. Y/n was sitting at the back of bus, her eyes focused on her journal that she was writing in when Kelsey had randomly just sat down in the seat next to hers. Everyone knew she always kind of kept to herself after a game and nobody tried to bother her either, but clearly Kelsey didn't pick up on that or she just didn't care. Personal space was probably non-existent when you're on the Aces. I mean just look at Sydney Colson. That was all the evidence you needed really.
"What are you always writing in there?" Kelsey asked to start up the conversation 'cause clearly y/n wasn't. She was also genuinely very curious on what she was always writing in that journal because she always carried it with her wherever she went.
"Uhh, poetry," she answered, a little nervous because she hadn't actually had a conversation with Kelsey about anything other than basketball. "Poetry? I didn't take you for the romantic," she teased, causing her to bite back a smile. "Hey, I use it for more than just romance," she defended weakly. "I'm sure you do. I guess that explains why you're always sitting in the back. You poor thing, you're just pourin' your heart out."
"I'm flattered that you think I have anyone to pour my heart out to," y/n retorts, shutting her journal to tuck back into her bag. Kelsey let out a scoff of disbelief, "oh, come on, you expect me to believe no one has snatched you up yet?"
"Yeah. My mom says I'm too shy so I guess that's what the problem is," she added, zipping her bag back up to give Kelsey her full attention. "She's not wrong about the shy part. You can't even make eye contact with me." She ducked her head shyly but Kelsey setting a hand on her knee caused her to look back up. "But we can always work on that. This is Paris. The city of love."
"I don't think I'm attracted to French girls," y/n denied, shaking her head in objection.
"Who said she had to be French?" Kelsey queried just as the bus stopped, signaling they were back at the village. Before y/n could even think of a response, Kelsey was already getting up and exiting the bus with the others. "Y/n, you comin'?" Jewell asked, snapping her out of her own little world. "Uh yeah, I'm comin'." She quickly gathered her stuff and got up, following Jewell out of the bus.
"I'ma check out this cafรฉ down the street, I'll see you tomorrow," she said, only to receive a concerned look from Jewell and some of the others. "Are you sure? It's pretty late. I could go with you," she offered. "Nah, it's fine. You don't need to do that. I'll be alright." She reassured, pulling her bag over her shoulder and waving bye before she began walking the opposite way to this cafรฉ.
"She's so different off the court. You would've never thought she'd be the shy girl," A'ja voiced, following them inside the building that was sort of like their own personal hotel. "She's not normally that shy, I promise," Jewell added but they didn't weren't buying it so much. "I'll believe it when I see it, Jewell. Goodnight y'all." A'ja said, waving her hand before entering her room.
Later that night, Kelsey was still wide awake so she heard when Y/n arrived back at the hotel. Their rooms were right across each other. She noticed y/ns performance in tonight's game was a little off and that definitely brought some concern. She felt like y/n was a little disconnected from the team so she wanted to do something to help. But she also didn't want to make it too obvious. So, she may have lied a bit.
Y/n was getting out of the shower when she seen the text from Kelsey asking if she could come over to use her shower because apparently her hot water didn't work. She wasn't a bitch so obviously she said yes. She was still in her towel when Kelsey was already knocking on her door. "Fuck." She mumbled, trying to search for her clothes and hold her towel up at the same time. "The one time I don't put clothes aside-"
She quickly pulled on some underwear and a tank top, unable to find her shorts she had put somewhere so she just answered the door like that. "Sorry- I just got out the shower. Uh, come in," she pulled open the door wider, letting her inside. Kelsey couldn't hide the amusement in her face because of how panicked she looked. "It's fine. We're both girls. I don't mind," she reassured with a shrug.
"Yeah yeah, of course- I don't uh typically walk around in my underwear by the way. You just caught me off guard." She quickly rushed over to her suitcase and unzipped it to search for a pair of shorts or sweats- whatever she found first. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to- I probably should've called first. I just remembered Jewell saying you never answer your phone unless it's a text." She said, sitting down at the edge of the bed.
"She's not wrong- and please, don't apologize. It's really okay. I don't mind at all." She reassured, finally finding a pair of shorts and quickly pulling them on, almost tipping over but reluctantly catching herself before she could fall face first. "My shower is just in there, unlimited hot water so take as much time as you want. Call me if you need anything."
"Great. Thanks for this." Kelsey smiled, walking past her to get to the bathroom door.
"It's not a problem," she brushed it off, biting back a smile as she walked back over to her bed. She picked up her journal and pen, the only sounds in the room being the water pouring out from the shower. It felt a little odd having a woman shower in her hotel that wasn't her friend Cassie. But she tried not to ponder on it much. It's not like Kelsey was gay. There was no chance anything was gonna happen between them tonight.
After twenty minutes, the door opened and Kelsey walked out, freshly showered and clothed. "What are you writing about now? Is it depressing?" She asked, plopping down on the bed next to her. "How'd you know?" Y/n retorts, rereading her words for the millionth time. "It's pretty obvious. There's a reason you're so disconnected. Is it a girl?"
"Yes. Her name is Kiara," she admits, subconsciously clicking the pen in her hand.
"You look guilty. What'd you do to make her hate you?" Kelsey questioned, adjusting the pillows to get more comfortable. She didn't even try to deny it either. "She wants a relationship, to settle, to move in, and I'm just not ready for that," she explained. Kelsey hummed in thought, taking in the information, "so...why aren't you ready?"
"I've never had a girlfriend, and I'm not sure I want her to be my first," y/n answered bluntly.
"I find that really hard to believe," Kelsey denied.
"I'm serious. I've never had one. I had a boyfriend in like high school before I realized I was gay and that's it." She explained with a small chuckle. "Seriously? That's crazy 'cause I heard you used to hook up with everyone in college. You hooked up with like three of my friends," Kelsey pointed out, causing her to cringe slightly. "Yeah...I was like a no strings attached kinda person," she mumbled, rubbing her neck awkwardly.
"You still are apparently," Kelsey teased.
"Alright, come on, just give me your honest opinion on this." She sat up, passing the journal to her for her advice. Kelsey took it into her hands, reading what was clearly some kind of apology with poetry. "It's..it's not bad, but you said literally everything wrong. If I was Kiara, I would move states and never speak to you again."
"I think I'm cursed," she muttered, plopping back down into the pillows with a groan.
"You're not cursed, don't say that! These other pages are so good. Why didn't you just use thsse?" Kelsey asked, flipping through the pages since she still had it in her hands. "Because they weren't written for her," y/n replied. "Damn. You'd think you hate this girl or something," Kelsey mumbled, subconsciously comparing the pages with the "apology."
"Can I be real with you?"
"Of course," Kelsey nods, shutting the book to provide her full attention.
"The only reason I've kept her around for this long is the sex," she admits shamefully. "Oh wow. Yeah, you're better off just cutting all contact," Kelsey said in full seriousness before they both started to laugh. "I swear I wasn't even trying to lead her on or anything, we just had good sex and she got the wrong idea. But I am guilty for letting it go on so long. That's what the apology is for. It's like a breakup letter."
"I don't normally support ghosting...but in this case, I'd rather be ghosted than rejected with poetry," Kelsey chuckled, tossing the journal onto her stomach. "I get it," y/n chuckled, setting the journal back onto her nightstand. "Thank you for your honesty. Jewell was a terrible liar."
Kelsey smiled, "you're welcome." They laid in a comfortable silence for a minute or so. She turned on her side and y/n did the same, a warm comforting smile on her face. It was a miracle she wasn't shy around her. Kelsey wasn't surprised, she knew y/n just needed someone to talk to. "How come back in college, you never shoot your shot with me?"
Y/n furrowed her brows in thought, "um, I guess I never really thought you'd be into me like that. When I asked your friend, she said you would never go for me."
"Was it Stacy?"
"I think so, yeah."
"She probably said that 'cause she was obsessed with you in high school."
Y/n furrowed her brows in confusion, "high school? I didn't go to high school with her." Kelsey couldn't fight the small laugh that escaped her lips. "Exactly. You were the popular girl. She was a bit of a loner back in high school. So when she found out your team was coming to our school for a game, she was suddenly a basketball fan. I'm still surprised she was able to seduce you at the bar that night."
"Okay- that's not fair. I was drunk because we lost," y/n defended, not wanting to seem like she was easy. "That's crazy because I'm pretty sure you only had Shirley temples that night," Kelsey teased, nudging her arm playfully. "Oh shut up. I was scared of alcohol," she argued weakly, subconsciously moving more closer.
"Okay, that explains why you didn't in college. But it doesn't explain why you never thought to shoot your shot when we both came into the league together," she expressed, smiling when she seen how nervous she was making her again. "I don't know- I mean, I never really thought to. You didn't take me for the no strings attached type of girl," she responded.
"Ouch. You know you could just say I'm not your type. That would be a much better way to reject me," Kelsey voiced light-heartedly. "But then I'd just be lying," she shot back a bit too fast for her own liking. Kelsey smirked, finally glad to be getting somewhere. She knew she wasn't crazy when she saw y/n checking her out in locker room. Y/n raised a brow, "I'm getting the feeling your water was running perfectly fine..."
"Maybe," Kelsey shrugged coyly. "So? You gonna shoot your shot or what? I'll give you some more poetry to write."
"You're kinda hot when you're arrogant," y/n noted, a small smirk playing at her lips, running her hand through Kelsey's dark brown hair. "And suddenly you don't seem so shy," she shot back, noting the way y/n's demeanor completely shifted. She shrugged nonchalantly, "guess we both have our fair share of secrets."
"We're both single and here for the rest of the Olympics. Why not make the most of it?" Kelsey proposed, and she did notice the slight hesitation in y/n's eyes. "I haven't got anything to lose. Do you?"
"Not a damn thing."
โ present day
"Lemme get this straight- pun not intended. You and Kelsey were sleeping together during your entire stay at the Olympics?"
Y/n nodded sharply, pouring herself a glass of red wine to soothe her nerves. "That's correct."
"Wow. I was not expecting that- literally like anybody but her. Maybe even Jackie- but Kelsey? Like the token straight girl? I hate to say it but I'm low-key impressed." Cassie expressed, pouring her own glass that was deeply needed. In that moment, her phone started to ring. "Who is it?" Cass asked, moving over to see.
"The token straight girl," y/n retorts sarcastically, holding up her phone to show the name to her best friend. "Oh shit. Well, what are you doing? Answer it!"
"No! Are you crazy?! That makes me look desperate!"
"Who cares?! This is like your future wife! Don't think I didn't notice how flustered you got talking about her!" Cassie exclaimed, setting her glass down to try and grab the phone out of her hand. "Cass- let go!" She groaned, trying to hold onto the phone but Cassie's finger slipped and hit the green button to answer the call.
"Hello?"
Cassie laughed silently, picking her glass back up as y/n was forced to respond. "Hey. I just saw the news. I'm glad you're joining us this season. You're gonna be a great addition to the team." Cassie smirked, wiggling her eyebrows in a teasing manner, causing y/n to throw a pillow at her face.
"Thanks. I'm glad you think so. But, I wasn't calling for that," Kelsey responded, her voice subconsciously lowering to be softer. "Really? Okay. What are you calling for?" She queried, ignoring the teasing gestures from her friend. "I have my eyes on a few apartments there that I'm gonna check out tomorrow and I was just wondering if maybe I could stay with you until I find a place I like. Obviously if you're comfortable with that- you were just the first person that came to mind. I know you used to live there so you're probably more familiar with the area."
"Yeah, yeah, of course you can. I'll be happy to drive you wherever you need, too. I don't have anything to do anyways." She spoke, pushing away Cassie who looked very offended that she just forgot about their nail and hair appointments tomorrow. "Great. Thanks. I'll call you tomorrow, okay? Bye." They hung up and Cassie smacked her shoulder. "Did you forget we have appointments tomorrow or are you too lovestruck?"
She scoffed, shrugging her shoulder, "we can reschedule."
"Oh, you've got it bad," Cassie teased, shaking her shoulder as she bit back a smile. "Shut up."
The next morning, Cassie had obviously slept over because she didn't feel like walking back to her apartment. Y/n was quite literally in the shower when Kelsey had arrived, far earlier than she was expecting. Cassie got up and answered the door, Kelsey quickly recognized her because Cass used to be one of the cheerleaders for y/n's team back in college. "Hi, uh, is this the right apartment? Y/n lives here, right?"
"Yeah, you're at the right place. She's in the shower right now. Come in." Cassie opened the door wider to let her inside. Kelsey couldn't help but smile at the decor, it was very fitting. "This is exactly how I imagined her place."
"I'm Cassie, by the way. I'm Y/n's best friend," she spoke, politely extending her hand. Kelsey took it with a warm smile, "Kelsey. We crossed paths in college. It's nice to properly meet you." She smiled, walking towards the kitchen, "you too. I can see why Y/n likes you so much. You're a sweetheart."
"I'm getting the feeling she told you about Paris," Kelsey noted, taking a seat on one of the stools. "You would be correct. I know all about your guy's dirty little secret. Don't worry, it's safe with me. I've got my fair share of secrets too. Lemonade?" She offered, and Kelsey nods, "sure." Cass picked up a glass and poured some of the homemade lemonade into it before sliding it over to her.
Cassie leaned against the table, squinting in suspicion, "so...what are your intentions with my best friend?"
"Oh, my god. Cass, go on somewhere. Don't you have an appointment to be at?" Y/n interrupted, quickly tightening her robe, trying her best to avoid Kelsey's eyes. "Fine. I'll be going. It was nice to meet you, Kelsey. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of each other 'cause I've got many questions." Cass said, shaking her hand again before moving to leave. "Y/n, don't forget your mom is coming later to drop off the candles."
"Yup. Bye," she mumbled, watching as Cass made her way to the front door.
Kelsey raised a curious brow, "candles?"
"Yeah. My mom makes candles...and soaps, and tons of other stuff. She's a bit of hippie." She explained, and Kelsey hums at the information, not that it was surprising at all. "That explains a lot," Kelsey chuckled, glancing around the apartment again. "What's that supposed to mean? Are you calling me a hippie?" Y/n scoffed, taking a sip of her coffee that she had made before taking a shower.
"I mean...if the shoe fits. This is the most hippie lookin' place I've ever seen. Reminds me of the first girl I hooked up with. Her name was Kez, and she was all about meditation and all that, you remind me a lot of her. Very similar vibes I'm getting." Kelsey expressed, smiling at how offended she looked being compared to another girl. Y/n leaned forward with squinted eyes, "what's her last name? For research purposes..."
"Nice try, but she would kick your ass. She's 6'3, six pack abs, and owns a boxing gym." Kelsey retorts, causing y/n to purse her lips awkwardly, nodding her head, "yeah...I changed my mind. I'm not scared or anything- but I wouldn't want to scare you off if I kick her ass. Can't be lookin' all toxic and shit, ya know?"
Kelsey snickered in amusement, taking a sip of her lemonade, "oh yeah, I believe you."
It was 7:30pm in San Francisco, and they arrived back at Y/n's apartment after hours of apartment and house searching. Kelsey found the perfect one that was only ten miles from the Valkyries facility and five miles from y/n's apartment. And Y/n spent about two hours just giving her a tour of the city. They only came back early because it began to rain and the last thing they needed was to get sick.
"Thank you so much for today. I really appreciated it." Kelsey voiced, pulling off her coat and hanging it up on the rack after kicking off her shoes. "It's no problem. It was honestly refreshing to get out and spend a day with someone other than my parents, and Cass." She replied honestly, kicking her shoes to the side.
"Still. Is there any way I can make it up to you?" Kelsey asked, getting closer to her to the point she stumbled back into the wall. "Uh-I mean, uh, you don't need to-" before she could father embarrass herself, saved by the bell. Kelsey backed up so she could get to the door, and she quickly pulled it open, faced with her mother, Taylor, and her wife, Tiffany. "Sorry we're so late. Traffic is a bitch in this city," Taylor expressed.
"It's okay, we just got home anyways," Y/n reassured, pulling the door open wider to let them inside.
"Who is this gorgeous human? You didn't tell us you had a girlfriend- oh wait, I know you. You're that darling who played in the Olympics with my sweet girl this year." Tiffany spoke in awe as Taylor kneeled down to loosen her shoelaces so she could remove her boots. "Kelsey, this is my mom's wife Tiffany, and my mother Taylor. They prefer first names so it doesn't make 'em feel old." Y/n introduced.
"It's very nice to meet you, ma'am," Kelsey spoke, shaking her hand kindly.
"Oh, she's got manners too. You got a special one. Don't screw it up, Y/n." Tiffany said with a pointed look on her stepdaughter. Taylor stood up and was next to shake her hand. "Hi, I'm Taylor, Y/n's mom. Wow- you are stunning, I don't know how she did it. It must be a miracle." Kelsey smiled at her kind words, her cheeks flushing a bright red.
"Oh, my god. Mom, you're embarrassing me," y/n groaned under her breath, her head falling in exasperation. "No, no, I'm serious. How is this possible? She's frickin' gorgeous." Taylor expressed, and her wife nodded in agreement. Tiffany put an arm around Kelsey's shoulders, "I love her already. We're keeping her, darling."
"She's a good soul. I can tell already." Taylor noted towards her daughter, pulling an arm around her shoulders as they walked to the kitchen. "Mom, please don't start- she's just a friend," y/n replied. "Bullshit. She makes you nervous. You only get nervous when you got feelings," Taylor retorts knowingly, causing her daughter to just huff in annoyance.
"Have you eaten dinner yet, my darlings?" Tiffany asked, setting down her tote bag on the counter. "Not yet, we just grabbed some lunch earlier," y/n answered, walking around the kitchen island to take a seat. "Good. I made you some lasagna since your fridge is emptier than an unused casket." Tiffany pulled out the glass dish and set it on the stove so she could preheat the oven to 350.
"Hey, I just haven't had time to go grocery shopping," y/n defended.
"You've been here for weeks already. You can't keep ordering takeout," Tiffany scolded, setting the dish into the oven to bake.
"Kelsey, what's your favorite scents?" Taylor asked, digging into her bag to take out the candles. "I really like lavender and vanilla, and a good shea butter is always nice," Kelsey answered, causing Tiffany to hum, a bit impressed at how similar her taste was to y/n's. "I've got the perfect candles for you," Taylor smiled, taking out a purple one and another one similar to a coffee brown color. They had very nice carvings into them as well.
"I love them. Thank you so much," Kelsey expressed, and y/n couldn't help but smile at how happy it made her.
"Y/n, has some extra candle holders she can give you. Go fetch those for your friend, pumpkin," Taylor instructed, ushering her off. She sighed, getting up from her chair, "don't embarrass me moms." They both smiled, "we make no promises."
The second she was gone, they turned to their future daughter in law (manifestation is key). "You must be special 'cause y/n hasn't said a word about you. Normally she tells us everything." Tiffany spoke, leaning up against the counter as Taylor poured them both some lemonade. "I don't know about that. We're just friends," Kelsey denied, deciding to just brush it off.
"I call bullshit. You look at my daughter like you've seen her naked," Taylor stated bluntly, causing her wife to quickly smack her arm for the comment. "I'm so sorry about her- she's on her cycle. It makes her a little irrational. You know how it is-" "Moms, please don't start talking about your cycles," y/n rushed into the kitchen to cut her off before she could continue.
"You're so sensitive, love. We're all women here," Taylor dismissed, handing her wife the glass of lemonade.
"I'm so sorry about that. They don't know boundaries," y/n mumbled to Kelsey who was more amused rather than disturbed. "Don't apologize for us. You're the one who's holding out on so much important information about your love life. Why are we just now hearing about this lovely woman? What happened to Natalie?" Tiffany questioned.
"Who's Natalie?" Kelsey questioned, looking to the moms because she knew y/n wasn't gonna admit anything.
"Y/n's old friend from college. They reunited at a coffee shop and went out on a date- what was it? Last week? Couple days ago?" Taylor explained, looking to y/n for the exact date but she was very irritated with the mention of Natalie. She set down the candle holders with a sigh, "last week, mom. She just wasn't was I'm lookin' for and it's never happenin' again- so please, drop it."
"Fine. So sensitive you are," Taylor huffed.
"Alright then, before we get going, I wanted to make sure you're still able to come fix my car on Thursday," Tiffany said as she gathered her stuff up, ready to leave early so they wouldn't be such a bother, even though they had clearly planned to stay longer. "Yeah, I'll be there at 4:30- should be right after I finish my photo shoot."
"Brilliant. I'm sick of this one driving me everywhere. I don't know how she got her driver's license. I'm European and I drive better in America. Can you believe that?" Tiffany rambled as Y/n and Kelsey shared a look of amusement, trying to stifle their laughs. "You keep shittin' on my driving and I'ma make you take the bus," Taylor shot back, smiling as she hugged and kissed her daughter on the head. "Love you a bunch, pumpkin."
"Love you too, mom."
Tiffany came over and hugged her next, "love you sweets. I'll drop off some banana bread next week." They both exchanged goodbyes with Kelsey before finally making their exit.
"Okay, they're iconic." Kelsey stated bluntly.
"Well that's one way to put it," y/n chuckled, opening her cupboard to grab a glass of wine hidden behind the tequila.
An hour later, they were just laying on the couch, a movie playing as they ate the dinner Tiffany had prepared for them. And obviously it was pared with some rich red wine. "This is really good wine. Where'd you get it?" Kelsey asked, pouring herself another glass. "It was a moving in gift from my dad and his wife. They live on a vineyard. They're actually coming to visit next week 'cause we're gonna celebrate his wife Deborah's birthday with my mom's and Cassie."
"So, your parents are divorced and both married and nobody hates each other?" Kelsey deadpanned, a little surprised at the lack of family drama. "Yeah, I know it's a little surprising but my mom and dad were best friends before anything. They had me when they were 16 so they felt obligated to marry. I always knew they were never in love, so for my 16th birthday, I told them they didn't have to stay together on my behalf. About a year later, they got divorced and yeah, they were pretty civil about it."
"That's really nice. You've got a good family," Kelsey compliments.
"I could say the same. Your family was always pretty nice to me back in college," y/n recalled with a smile.
Kelsey chuckled softly, recalling all the good things her family had to say about y/n. Even during the Olympics, they were thrilled to see that y/n made the team. She was like an honorary family member. "Yeah, 'cause you were the only one on your team who didn't trash talk me or push me around. And anytime you fouled me, you would apologize immediately after."
"I remember. You fell on your ass once and I helped you up so your mom baked me a pie. I didn't even get a slice because my uncle and his sons literally devoured it after football practice." She snickered, recalling the time she had found her cousins mouths stained purple after they ate the entire blueberry pie. Kelsey chuckled, face-palming as y/n sipped her wine again. "Stop- I literally pretended to hurt my ankle because she tried to make me go with her to drop it off. She said you weren't home but she talked to your uncle and left it with him."
"Well, she's a great baker. They loved it," y/n emphasized light-heartedly.
"I'll be sure to let her know."
After a few seconds, the laughter died down and they were quiet again, the movie still playing but it was nothing but background noise now. Kelsey broke the silence again, her mind going off to the interaction with y/n's mom earlier. "So, what happened with this Natalie girl that made you get so defensive?" Y/n hummed, making Kelsey smile just a bit. "I had a feeling you would ask. You want the truth?"
Kelsey grabbed the remote to pause the movie, nodding her head. "Okay, I'm ready. Give it to me."
"I slept with her," Kelsey nodded slowly, resisting the urge to roll her eyes and y/n continued, "and for some reason, I couldn't stop thinking about you." The room filled with silence almost instantly, and that made her even more nervous, and when she got nervous, she started talking more. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable or anything- but I legitimately cannot get you out of my head. Ever since Paris, you've been the only woman occupying my mind, and won't lie and say that's not a little scary to me. I just- I feel like you should know that before we start working together as teammates 'cause I would hate for you to feel uncomfortable-"
Kelsey fully interrupted her by smashing their lips together, getting her to stop talking so she could kiss back. Her hands immediately found her waist to pull her closer and she took that to climb over her lap. After a minute, they had to pull away for breath. Y/n seemed a bit taken back by the suddenness of it all. Kelsey was rather calm, taking a second to catch her breath before speaking. "I'm gonna take you out on a proper date, but as for now. It's been too long, and I need you."
Her shock went as soon as it came and she nodded almost immediately, "okay. I'm cool with that."
Kelsey smiled, pushing her hair back to press a kiss behind her ear, "take off my clothes."
