Gabby fell deep in love with her UConn teammate, so deep she was willing to drown. She returned her love, just-- not in the same way Gabby did. She loved her. She wanted to be with her. But, she also wanted to be with him. And you're probably wondering who that is. I'll explain. His name was Colin, and he played on the UConn men's basketball team.
There was days y/n only wanted, craved Gabby. And there was days she ditched her to be with Colin. She constantly played with her heart, getting her hopes high just to crush them the next day. And still, Gabby loved her. She chose her each time. She fell for her distant love every single time.
Senior night in Connecticut is where it went south. The WNBA draft would come up soon enough and Gabby wanted them to finally be official, to finally have some security. She wanted to dive into this new life with the woman she'd been in love with since freshman year when they bumped into each other and Gabby accidentally spilled her coffee all over her. She wanted to be hers.
Four years...down the drain when she chose him.
That night, they never spoke since. Not when they met up on the court in W or overseas. Not when they had to shake each other's hand. Not when y/n announced to the world that she and Colin, a NBA superstar, were married. And even through all of that, the thought of y/n still kept Gabby up at night. She couldn't even keep a relationship because all she could think about was her.
It shouldn't have bothered her as much as it did. All y/n did was play with her emotions. She took her feelings and just threw them out the window. Looking back at it, she wanted to believe she would do the opposite, but reality always hit her in nights like this.
It was a cold night in Seattle. She was tucked under the covers, scrolling through social media. Then she got the message. A message from her friend. It was a link to a website. The WNBA superstar and NBA superstar, Y/n Y/l/n and Colin Matthews were getting divorced. A divorce that y/n filed for. It should've been surprising, but, it wasn't. Less than a week ago Gabby seen some videos of him with another woman, presumably cheating on her.
Hearing the news...the emotions flooded back to her again. She couldn't help but think of them, reminiscing of the nights they shared in college. This wasn't the first time she felt like this. There were some nights she had that burning urge to text her. She had it again, right now. That urge to call her, wondering if she'd even pick it up. Surely not?
But what was the point? Just like college, she'd say she wanted her then go switch it up. She'd play with her emotions just because. Get her hopes high and tell her more lies. She'd make Gabby feel like a fool all over again. She made it feel like it was too hard to fall in love again. Like she couldn't allow herself to love another woman in same way she loved y/n.
What was the harm now? She was seeing her at the game tomorrow anyways. Might as well talk to her before hitting the court. It's not like she'd actually answer.
Gabby sighed, clicking on y/n's contact. She wasn't even sure if it'd work. It was the same number she had in college. She most likely updated it by now.
Wrong.
"Hello?"
She gulped, not expecting her to actually pick up...and to actually hear her sweet voice. There she goes again. She got one word over the phone and she's swooning. "Hey uh..it's Gabby. I know it's late- sorry if I'm bothering you."
"Oh." Really? That's it? Talking over the phone was so frustrating when she couldn't see what y/n was thinking. "I uh..I take it you heard the news. That's why you're calling, aren't you?" She didn't like the way she sounded, and maybe it was just the phone but she sounded so sad, so heartbroken and defeated.
"Actually, yes, I did hear but I wasn't calling for that."
"Really? What were you calling for?"
Here it goes. "I was thinking about you. About us."
She received silence. It was nerve-wracking. She wasn't sure what kind of answer she'd get back. It wasn't exactly the greatest timing. "Do you want to come over?" When an opportunity presents itself...you don't look past it. Maybe she should've. But who was she kidding? This was the love of her life.
"Yes."
She found herself standing outside the hotel room, double checking the number before knocking softly. She didn't know what she was expecting when she answered but it wasn't for y/n to pull her in and smash their lips together for the first time in years. She did it again. She caught Gabby under her spell once again with minimal effort. One kiss and she was ready to drown for her.
It was sad, honestly. How she managed to end up in y/n's bed once again, even quicker than the last times. But she couldn't think of it like that. She thought it as a way of y/n finally realizing what was in front of her all this time. She felt chosen.
Oh how wrong she was.
Her finger was tracing circles over y/n's skin when she had suddenly gotten up and pulled her robe over her shoulders. "So uh, this was fun. Did you want me to call you a ride or did you drive here?" She questioned.
Gabby blinked, not sure she heard that right. She couldn't have. "Um, what?"
"Well, this was a really nice catch up but we have a game tomorrow and I need to be alone so...you gonna leave or..?" Gabby stared up at the ceiling, processing the words she just heard. She scoffed, sitting up to look at her, "are you fucking kidding me? Catch up? That's what you're calling this?"
"What else did you think this was, Gabs?"
She got up, immediately grabbing her clothes to pull back on, trying her best to remain calm. "You are the most selfish person I have ever met."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me." She pulled her shorts up and stepped towards her, not much of a height difference between them. "You haven't changed at all. You're still the same girl who strung me along for four years. You're still the same selfish girl who made me feel like a fool every time I stayed when you lied about loving me. You're still the same girl who took and continues to take me and my love for granted."
She furrowed her brows, not understanding this sudden change of emotions from Gabby. "Hold on- where is this coming from?"
She had a scoff mixed in with a choked up laugh, tears rolling down her cheeks. Her voice cracked. "God- you are so unbelievable. This is coming from years of you using me for your entertainment. I have loved you through your very worst and all you've done is treat me like I'm some meaningless fuck. I've been way too good to you and you don't give me half the effort. You have never once chosen me in the way I choose you. I should've never given you my heart."
She still wasn't seeing it. She wasn't seeing the pain she created. "What do you want from me? You want me to choose you? 'Cause that's not possible, Gabby."
"Oh, my god. You still can't get over your own head! I'm finally standing up for myself- pouring out my feelings, my point of view and you're still making this about you?" She ran a hand over her braids, in complete disbelief. She grabbed her shirt to pull it on, ready to get out of this place. "I can't believe I've wasted my life thinking we could put it back together."
"Gabby, don't say that." She reached for her hand, trying to reel her back in. "I'm sorry, okay? For- for everything I've done to you. We can still fix this."
Gabby pulled her hand from her grasp, not falling for the same rehearsed lies. "No. I'm done falling into your cycle of pain. You will not make me feel like a fool."
"Gabby, wait." Her words were useless when she didn't even make an effort to stop her.

The next day. It was Aces vs Storm. Jewell vs Skylar. Y/n vs Gabby.
It was humiliating. They were making a fool out of them. None of her shots were landing. Her pockets were getting picked left and right. Gabby was playing with pure hatred.
The game ended 82-102, Storm taking the win. Gabby taking it.
Y/n had never experienced a loss that bad before. She had never been more humiliated. Nothing in her life was going right. But she wasn't taking accountability now. Not yet at least. And right now? She wanted to get off this court as fast as possible. The cheers of the Seattle Storm fanbase was taunting, agonizing even. She couldn't take it any longer.
She went to walk off until she felt a hand grab hers, and out of instinct she turned to see who it was, assuming it was one of the players offering a handshake. Yeah, it wasn't. She faced Gabby, the French woman's stare cold and demeaning as she leaned in to her ear, voice dropping to a harsh, dark whisper. "You're dead to me."
There was her closure.
