Y/n and Paige had been best friends since kindergarten. They grew up together. They played ball together. Some would say y/n was better. Some would say Paige was better. But being better didn't matter to each other. They just wanted to be teammates forever. They wanted to win a championship together. They wanted to break records together. They wanted to retire together. That's all that mattered.
In high school, they were still as close as ever. Then, y/n got a boyfriend, one of the guards on the boy's team and they didn't spend every second with each other anymore. Paige was happy for her, obviously. It didn't affect their friendship. When she started dating Azzi, it still didn't affect anything. Y/n wasn't close with Azzi by any means, but she always supported Paige, and definitely approved of their relationship.
They both went into college in happy relationships. Only, y/n's boyfriend committed to LSU instead. It was okay. It was fine. She was committed to making it work. And it did. Or so, she thought. That's where we kick it off. Sophomore year, halfway into the season.
Y/n was laying down on the sofa scrolling on her phone as Nika, Paige, Azzi, and Aaliyah were deciding between a game to play. Then she got it. A random dm on Instagram from a girl. She clicked on the message, and usually she'd ignore them but something told her to just open it. She read it, completely confused and Nika noticed. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know. I got some random dm from a girl who knows Chris." She mumbled, passing the phone at her. "What does it say?" Paige asked. Nika decided to just read it aloud for them to hear. "Hey, you probably don't know me, but I go to LSU, I'm a cheerleader for the football team. Do you happen to know a Chris Williams?"
"Why is she asking that? Didn't you say he posts you all the time?" Aaliyah asked.
"Yeah, on like Facebook for his family to see. He has like two pictures of me on Insta." Y/n shrugged, not seeing the big deal. They were always pretty big on privacy. "This is weird. I'm gonna respond." Nika mumbled, sending a text back, confirming Chris was y/n's boyfriend.
It was only seconds later she got back a text with a bunch of photos. "What'd she say?" Y/n asked.
"Um...she said, I'm sorry you have to hear this from me, but Chris has been cheating on you for months. I was dating him for a couple of weeks, and he cheated on me with a girl on the basketball team. I didn't know about you until last night through a mutual friend. If you don't believe me, I'll send more proof. Sorry about this again. You deserve better." The room was silent, the girls waiting for y/n to say something, anything.
"I have to wake up early tomorrow. I'll see y'all at practice." She took her phone back and got up, leaving before they could even get a word out.
"What should we do?" Nika asked, ready to go follow her but she wasn't sure that was a good idea or not. She never seen y/n like that before. They were looking to Paige for help, as she obviously knew her the best. "We should let her be. She's gonna need time to think. She'll talk to us tomorrow." Paige assured. She knew even if they did follow and try to talk to her, she wouldn't say anything or listen to a word.
It was later that night when Azzi snuck out to go to y/n's dorm. She was rooming with Aubrey, who was fast asleep at this hour. She took a key from Paige, and used that unlock the door. She quietly made her way to y/n's room. She knocked and pressed her ear against the door, hearing a faint, "leave me alone, Aubrey."
She turned the handle and pushed open the door, finding her laying on the carpet staring at the ceiling. She didn't say anything, just kneeled down and laid out on the carpet beside her. She had glow in the dark stars on the ceiling that Azzi grew fond of anytime she came over with Paige. "Surprised Paige ain't with you," she mumbled.
"She thought we should give you some space."
"You didn't?"
Azzi turned on her side to look at her, "I didn't want you to be alone."
Y/n finally moved her eyes off the ceiling to face Azzi, and the way she was looking at her raised some concerns. That wasn't a friendly look. "You shouldn't be here."
Azzi didn't seem bothered. "Why not?"
"You're Paige's girlfriend."
She still wasn't fazed by her words, or her pushing. "So? We're teammates first."
"No. You're Paige's girlfriend first. That comes before everything. Which is why you shouldn't be here- and if I'm assuming correctly, she doesn't know you're here. Am I right?" Azzi hummed, taking her words into consideration before nodding. "Exactly. That makes us look bad."
Azzi was quick to dismiss her concerns. "We can't look bad if there's nothing going on."
"Does Paige know you feel that way?"
That bothered her but she still kept her cool. "Why do you keep bringing up Paige?"
Y/n scoffed, not even worried about her situation anymore. "She's my best friend, and her girlfriend is in my room after hours. Why wouldn't I bring her up? This looks wrong." Azzi huffed, her patience getting tested more and more. "It only looks wrong if you want it to be wrong. Do you?"
She gulped, shaking her head slightly, "no."
"There. It's settled. Now, do you want to talk about it? That's what I'm here for." Y/n sighed, nodding her head because she did have the urge to talk about it. Confiding in Azzi shouldn't have been hard. She was a trustworthy person. "I feel like like an idiot. I gave him so much of me. I told him my deepest secrets. I gave him my virginity...and he just betrays me like it meant nothing. Like, none of it meant anything to him."
"You have every right to feel betrayed, but that doesn't make you an idiot. Pouring your heart out to someone, and loving them with everything in you does not make you an idiot. The person you loved, the person you gave everything to is the idiot." She brought some tears out with her words, and she instantly leaned over to wrap her arms around the heartbroken girl. "You did nothing wrong."
She couldn't help but cling onto the girl. Her embrace felt so warm, so safe. She never wanted her to let go. She knew she shouldn't be feeling that way either. This should be Paige comforting her, or any one of her friend's she didn't find insanely beautiful. Why couldn't it have been Nika? Or Aaliyah? It just had to be Azzi.
It was always Azzi.
She tried so hard to fight it. To fight the attraction she had towards her best friend's girlfriend. But it was Azzi. The same girl who made her laugh so hard she couldn't breathe. The same girl who smiled at her when she was down. The same girl who always made sure she felt included. The same girl her best friend was in love with.
She glanced up at her, Azzi looking down at her with those beautiful, soft brown eyes. Eyes flickered to her lips, and she knew it was wrong. She knew all of this was wrong. But, she couldn't- no, she didn't want to say no to her. She didn't want her to leave. And all of sudden, Chris and Paige didn't exist to her anymore. That was how much space Azzi took in her mind. So much she couldn't think about anything other than kissing this beautiful girl in her arms.
Azzi reached up, softly caressing her face with her thumb. "You deserve so much better." There it was. The trigger.
She leaned up, pressing her lips against hers in a heartbeat. She kissed back, proving it wasn't just a one-sided feeling. Y/n slipped her hands around her waist, bringing her over her lap to take over. Azzi leaned in, voice dropping to whisper in her ear. "I want you. I've always wanted you both."
"Both?"
Azzi nodded, cupping her face with delicate hands. "I can love you both."
Y/n didn't say anything, just bringing her back into the kiss, hand sliding around her neck, deepening it with every passing second. Her other hand slipped under her hoodie, Azzi smiling into the kiss. "Take this off."
"Take yours off first."

The next day, Paige felt the shift immediately. She caught on especially during practice. Y/n could barely look at her all whilst Azzi was entirely to glowy and happy in the morning. She knew them better than anyone. She wasn't stupid. It didn't take long to put the pieces together. That's why she knew what was up. And she had to handle it before anyone else found out.
That night, she confronted Azzi first. She told her everything immediately. She couldn't lie to her. Then came the tears, and apology. Paige loved the girl. She was gonna make it work no matter how hurt she was. She knew it was mistake. She knew Azzi was sorry.
Y/n was sitting on her couch, staring at the ceiling lost in thought, a random show playing in the background. She wanted so badly to just tell Paige. But selfishly, she wanted more time with Azzi. She wanted to have her longer. She wanted to have her the way Paige did. Before this, she only spoke a couple words a day to her. Now she wanted to spend every second with her, in her demanding presence.
Who knew one night could change everything?
There was a knock on her door, she quickly got up to get it. She wanted it to be Azzi. It wasn't. It was Paige, and she didn't look happy. "What's up? You good?"
"Nah, I ain't good." Paige scratched her ear, stepping inside as she held the door open for her. Y/n couldn't look at her. She knew what this was about. "I just...I don't understand how you could do somethin' like that. To me, Y/n? I thought- I thought we were best friends."
"We are!"
"No, we ain't! My best friend would never do that to me! I don't know what the hell has gotten into you 'cause the girl I grew up with wouldn't even think of doin' what you did!" She wasn't even crying. She wasn't sparing the tears. She wasn't sad. She was angry. She was fucking furious and everything she said was filled with it.
"Paige- come on, you know it's not like that."
"So what's it like? What?" She stepped towards her, getting all up in her face, forcing her to face her. "You think you can just fuck my girlfriend and shit's gon' be sweet?"
Y/n wasn't sure what to do or say. But she wasn't about to take all the blame when Azzi showed up first. "How the fuck is this all my fault? Did she tell you she came to me?"
"So you tell me that shit! You don't fuck her!" Y/n went quiet, letting the blonde sceam in her face. She deserved it. She deserved all of the lashing. 'Cause truth was, she knew she was wrong. She knew it the moment she didn't tell Azzi to leave. "I would never do some shit like that to you! I would never betray you like that!"
"So whatchu want me to do?" She asked, not sure how she could make this situation better. "'Cause I know sorry's not gon' be enough for you."
Paige took a breath, trying to calm herself down. She didn't shout, or get angry like that ever. This brought all the anger out of her, and she wasn't sure if anything could fix it. Her voice dropped, a broken crack in it as she spoke. "You gotta go."
She blinked, not sure what the hell she meant by that. "What?"
Paige sniffled, placing her eyes back on her. "You need to leave. Transfer. Go anywhere. I don't care. As long as you ain't here."
She scoffed under her breath, tears rolling down her cheeks. "It's like that?"
Her tone was cold, harsh. "You should've thought twice before you stabbed me in the back."
"What about her?"
Paige walked over to the door, turning the knob to pull it open. "She ain't none of your business no more."

That night changed everything for her. She wasn't the same. She went from childhood best friend's with Paige to her enemy. Their issues traveled onto court with them when Y/n transferred to South Carolina. Every single time they faced UConn it was world war three. They had something to say every play, so much their coaches wouldn't let them guard each other unless absolutely necessary.
Despite her issues with Paige, she still had those feelings for Azzi. She missed her. She wished she could go back to that night and stay there forever. She wanted so badly to be with her again. Every day, her thumb hovered over the call button. She could never do it. Because there was still that part of her that loved Paige, and respected her. No matter how upset she was about being casted out of her life.
She didn't just miss Azzi. She missed her best friend too. It was like being separated from your twin. It hurt more than anything.
The more she was away, the stronger Azzi and Paige's relationship got. And y/n had to see all of it. She had to see the fans shipping them and going insane over the smallest crumbs all while her heart ached for that feeling of love again. The love Paige and Azzi had. Nothing could compare. It got to the point, she couldn't even go on a date without comparing the girl to Azzi. At some point, she stopped going on dates. She stopped wasting her time because she knew it was pointless. Nobody could compare to Azzi.ย
She didn't even look at her during the WNBA draft. Nor could Paige. She ignored her the whole time. Even the fans were upset. They thought they would finally see the two reunite with smiles. But nope. Paige couldn't even spare her a look, let alone a smile. It was fine. Y/n accepted it a long time ago. She wished it could be different but it wasn't ever going to be the same again and that was her fault. She'd be stupid to expect otherwise.
She was drafted 5th overall to the Golden State Valkyries. It was a humbling moment, and she couldn't have been more appreciative of the opportunity. But, that one part of her kinda wished she got drafted to Dallas. She figured maybe being teammates would help them find their friendship again. It was delusional to think that, but that was all she could be in her situation.
Then came training camp. Just a couple days in, she was impressing the coaches, the staff, and her teammates. Until, one morning during practice she was going for the most basic move under the paint when it snapped. Her acl tore, really out of nowhere. She had never had issues with her knee before so it certainly caught her by surprise. Usually injuries built up to this, but nope. She might just have the worst luck in the world.
It was beyond depressing. It put her in a really bad place. She had a good support system but it just wasn't enough. Nothing was enough.
Until it was.
She was laying on her couch, head rested on Kate's lap. She had gotten pretty close with the blonde since being drafted. And Kate didn't want to let her out of her sight. It was sweet. She liked Kate. She was a really good friend and teammate. They got on really well. Even if Kate wanted more out of it, she was still hung up on Azzi. Of course, Kate knew this. She told her. And she completely understood how it could feel receiving no clarity.
"You wanna watch Love Island-" a loud knock on the door cut her off. "I'll get it." Kate got up and set a pillow under her head for support before she walked over to get the door. She pulled it open, faced with Azzi Fudd, a bouquet of flowers and chocolates in her hand. "Um- sorry, is y/n here?"
"Uh, just hold on one minute." She shut the door and turned to y/n, who wasn't paying attention to anything but the ceiling. "Y/n. It's Azzi. Should I let her in?"
Y/n immediately sat up, expression filled with shock. "What's she doing here?"
"I don't know, but if you don't wanna talk to her-" "no, no, I wanna talk to her. Let her in." Kate nodded and pulled the door back open, smiling warmly. "Sorry about that. Come on." She held the door open wider and Azzi smiled, stepping inside. "Thank you."
"Um, I'm gonna go pick up the food." Kate reached for the keys on the hook, y/n and Azzi not looking at anything else but each other. "Y/n, you good?" She gulped, nodding in response. "Okay, uh, just call me if you need anything. I'll be back."
As soon as she was gone, Azzi made her way over, that sweet smile and soft, gorgeous brown eyes gracing her features. She took a seat beside her, placing the flowers and chocolates onto her lap. "I uh- I remember you said these were your favorite. I didn't wanna come empty handed."
"Does Paige know you're here?"
Azzi nodded softly, tucking some curls behind her ear. "It was actually her idea." Y/n didn't say anything back, still processing all of this. "I was really upset hearing you torn it, and so, she insisted that I come see you." She explained, reaching over to take her hand that was placed over her lap.
"So basically, she cares more about you than me. Good to see nothings changed." She mumbled, feeling that ache in her heart all over again. Azzi sighs, knowing Paige was gonna kill her for saying this but it was true. "She cares about you more than you think, y/n. She misses you a lot. She's just...she needs more time. She needs to find the forgiveness. She misses you that much."
"What about you? You miss me too?"
"Of course I miss you. Who else is gonna laugh at my lame jokes?" She smiled, and y/n chuckled softly. This was probably the best she's felt in weeks. "I was really sad when I found out the news. I hate that you're going through this. You don't deserve it. But, I know you can get through this. I believe in you. Paige believes in you."
Y/n couldn't help but smile. It felt nice hearing that. She missed her best friend so much. "This isn't gonna stop you, it's gonna make you better. You will get through this. I know you can."
"Thanks, Az."
It went quiet for a couple seconds, Azzi rubbing her hand in soft circles. "I know you and Paige are still going strong but..do you ever, think about me? About that night?"
Azzi took a breath, not entirely sure how to respond. "Sometimes."
"Do you regret it?"
"Yes, and no. I regret getting in between you and Paige. But, I don't regret the love we shared that night. I thought I could love you both and that was selfish of me. I uh- I already told her that. She knows in case you're wondering." Y/n nodded, taking that into mind again. Of course she wanted to be good with Paige again, but it did hurt that she couldn't have both. She'd have to settle with Azzi as a friend. If Azzi didn't choose her before, she wasn't choosing her today. It was a shitty feeling. Even worse that she understood it.
"Can you say it? I need to hear it so I can finally move on."
Azzi frowned slightly, it felt cruel to say it but she knew y/n needed the clarity and she felt obligated to give it. "I choose Paige."
She nodded, taking a sharp inhale as Azzi gave her hand a small squeeze. "Thank you. I'm glad you're happy. You deserve it. You and Paige...you're uh- you're great together." A tear rolled down her cheek and she leaned in, wrapping her arms around y/n. "I hope you find your person, y/n. You deserve all the happiness in the world, and I'm sorry I couldn't give that to you."
She rubbed her back, forcing a smile, "It's not your fault." She wasn't hiding how much this hurt her. The feeling of rejection was nothing short of painful. "No, no, it is. I should've never taken advantage ot you in such a vulnerable moment. That was beyond selfish. You did not deserve to be victim to my stupidity. I was dumb to think I could have you both."
"Yeah, but at the end of the day, I should've known better. I betrayed my best friend, and that is my fault. Now all I can do is pray that she'll forgive me." Azzi smiled softly, rubbing her arm in a soothing manner. "She will. You just gotta be patient. She forgave me. She can find it in her heart to forgive you too."
"I hope so."
Azzi glanced at the hoodie she wore, and recognized it to be one of Kate's that she got from Kelsey Plum's dawg class. It made her smile. She could definitely see them together. "So...what's goin' on with you and Kate?"
Y/n chuckled, "I don't even know. We're kinda just friends right now."
"Do you wanna be more than that?"
"I mean..I'm not opposed to it anymore. I feel like I just needed to get over you first. She knows that. She said she'll wait for me to get in the right headspace because she really likes me." Azzi smiled, very happy for her, but of course, in the back of her head there was some jealousy. She may have chosen Paige, but she still had those thoughts about having them both. She didn't think they'd ever dissappear.
She took her hands, giving them a supportive squeeze. "That's good. I'm really happy for you. You guys will be great together."
Y/n took a breath, nodding in agreement. She glanced down at their hands, and Azzi moved them when she noticed. She knew Paige trusted her to come here and come back to her. She couldn't mess it up again. No matter how badly she wanted to kiss her just one last time. "I should go. You keep your head up. Call me if you ever need to talk when things get hard. I'll always be there for you."
"Thanks, Az. I will." They shared one final hug, and it lingered longer than it should've. It wasn't a big deal. It was basically a goodbye hug.
"Bye." Azzi stood up and y/n mumbled a goodbye under her breath as she watched her leave.
A couple minutes later, Kate returned with the food, super excited to eat. "They gave us extra because they recognized me," she said, walking over to see y/n messing with a rubix cube. "How was your talk with Azzi? You feelin' better?" Kate set the food down and took a seat beside her, immediately setting a hand on her thigh.
"She chose Paige."
Kate frowned, obviously feeling bad for her because she knew how much she loved Azzi. But also, she couldn't be too sorry because this meant she could have her to herself. And selfishly, she wanted Azzi to choose Paige. "I'm sorry, y/n. I know how much she means to you." Y/n smiles, patting her hand, "it's okay, seriously. I'm glad she rejected me. I mean..even if she did choose me, I think I would've chosen Paige over her."
"Well yeah, she's still your best friend at the end of the day, even if you're at odds. If this was me and Caitlin, we'd choose each other over any girl. Relationships come and go, a friendship is forever." Kate said, always knowing exactly what to say to her. She was good at that. She was so good at reassurance, getting y/n out of her head. And y/n knew she shouldn't compare, but Kate had many traits she loved about Azzi.
"You always know what to say," she mumbled, resting her head on her shoulder.
"I try," she smiled.
"Can you stay over tonight?"
Kate raised her brows, a little surprised to hear that because y/n never let her stay past 12. "Yeah, yeah, I'd love to stay."
Y/n leaned up, pressing a quick kiss over her lips, and Kate could barely process it because of how fast it was. "Did you get sweet and sour?" She reached over to grab the bag, Kate still blinking in shock, "uh- yeah, yeah, I did."
"I'm so hungry I could eat-"
"Me?" Kate smirked, and y/n paused to look at her, "I was gonna say peanuts- but yeah, that works too."
Kate's jaw dropped, "you're allergic to peanuts!"
She smiled sheepishly, "I'm not allergic to you."
Kate chuckled softly, grabbing the bag before she fell over trying to get it. "Don't start something you can't finish."
"Who says I can't finish?"
"That knee brace."
"Too soon."
"Sorry."
