"No, no, no, you said I could pick the shoes!" Y/n rushed out, stopping her assistant from grabbing the pair she disliked the most. Cami sighs, gesturing the pairs on the table. "Alright. Pick a pair. We're on a tight schedule." She grinned, pointing at the pair of heels in the middle. She felt they suited her outfit the most. The other ones didn't mesh well with the theme.
She was typically one of the best dressed celebrities anytime she went to the Met Gala. Last year, she had the best look of the night. For the past three years she'd been wearing two outfits, and she was obviously gonna keep that going this year. Fashion was a huge part of her life, and career. She was very passionate about the themes, studying them with her stylist and best friend, Lewis.
This years theme was probably one of her favorites by far. The first look was an all white dress, all sorts of little details going on to match the theme, and of course the long sheer hat. She liked the idea of starting with a dress, because later on she'd come back with a tailored suit. She'd be walking around the exhibit and such so a suit would be a lot more comfortable to walk in.
She always got a different hotel or air bnb to dress in and leave to the gala to obviously avoid people spoiling her outfit before she hit the carpet. When they got there, the carpet was cleared off for her to singles pics without any other celebrities in the background. She didn't ask for that but they always did it for her anyways. She was a bit of a favorite.
"They cleared off the carpet. It's definitely Zendaya or Y/n." Breanna comments towards her two teammates, JJ and Sabrina. They were watching to see who came out. "Probably Zendaya," Sabrina comments, really excited to meet her.
They all watched as Y/n walked up the stairs by herself, her team leaving her to do her thing. Their jaws all dropped, a ton of flashes going off at the same time. "Not Zendaya," JJ mumbled, silently wondering if this woman was even real.
"You good?" Stewie chuckles, noticing Sabrina unable to look away. "Shhh. My eyes are being blessed right now."
After a couple poses, her team rushed to get her to the stairs that led you up the exhibit. She posed in the middle of the stairs for pictures. "Lewis, get in the picture!" She waved him over and he raised a brow, "I don't wanna ruin your moment!"
"Get over here, now before I drag you by your ear." She threatening, beckoning him over. He didn't waste a second walking up the stairs. "Here, stand on that step so you don't look so short," she directed, having him a couple steps above her. She was already tall so the heels just added to that.
After that, they left go get her changed again. That took about an hour and a half with the makeup change and hair change. It was previously in a slick back, and they straighted it again, parting it in the middle. Then she had to change and that itself took quite a minute. When they got back, it was nearing towards the end of the carpet, she knew she wasn't last though because her friend Rihanna was coming last.
She got more pictures in her second outfit and finally got to talk with the reporters and some other people unlike how she rushed out the first time. Then of course she walked up the iconic stairway to enter the exhibit. They showed her to the backstage, because she had agreed to perform a couple songs with the choir. It wasn't gonna take much of her time because she obviously still wanted to see the exhibit and enjoy the party herself.
She put together a couple of popular songs for the set list she liked. She wasn't doing any of her own, just covers. She wanted to go with an old school feel, maybe some of the blues, soul, and jazz. The choir was actually very happy with her choice of covers. She had two Sam Cooke songs, (What A) Wonderful World and A Change Is Gonna Come. Then she put together two Nina Simone songs, I Put A Spell On You and Feeling Good. She loved covering Nina Simone, so that was something she was looking forward to.
Her mom requested some Etta James so she went with, I'd Rather Go Blind and At Last. If she had time, she would've included Stormy Weather too. And Of course she had to include a Marvin Gaye song, Lewis picking I Heard It Through The Grapevine. It'd be wrong not to include Walk on By, by Dionne Warwick. She couldn't wait to sing that one on stage. She sung it all the time at home so she had plenty of practice.
And, you had to end the show on a happy upbeat mood, so she went with My Girl by the Temptations and Baby Be Mine by Michael Jackson to end the set.
The whole performance went well, they got a standing ovation by the end of it. She shared a group hug with the choir backstage before removing the earpiece and returning the microphone. While everyone was socializing, eating, and just having a good time, she made her way to view the exhibit in peace. Although she didn't notice a certain basketball player had spotted her wander off from everyone.
She took a sip of the expensive wine, eyes glazing over the pieces. "That was quite a performance." She quickly removed her eyes from the art to see who was speaking to her. It took a second to recognize her glamorous appearance outside of her typical basketball wear. "Thank you."
"You not a fan of socializing?" Sabrina questioned, clearly referring to the fact that she basically snuck away. "Nah, I just like to avoid the fake people for as long as possible before they corner me and ask for a picture to post on their Instagram." She was joking, a little bit. Most of it was true though. Some people just weren't worth her time.
Sabrina didn't seem to understand, a little new to all this, obviously. "Wait- are you talking about me?" Y/n chuckled in amusement, shaking her head immediately. "No. I don't know anything about you. Yet."
Sabrina sighed in relief and then smiled when she realized y/n did want to know her. "Well, for starters, my name is Sabrina Ionescu. I'm a WNBA player. I don't know if you watch basketball much..."
"I know who you are. But it is nice to finally meet you. I almost didn't recognize you outside of your jersey." She took a step back to take a glance over her outfit. "You look very beautiful. That's a solid outfit for your Met debut. But I will be expecting a little more next year. You can't play it safe all the time. This is the Met. You gotta take risks with fashion, like you take risks when you step out on that court."
Sabrina smiled for what seemed like the millionth time that night. Down to the compliment, her sultry voice and now the deep but playful eye contact, she was redder than a freshly picked cherry tomato. Maybe it was the outfit that gave her a confidence boost, but she somehow got flirtatious with her response. "Yeah, maybe you could help style me next time...since you're so good at this."
A grin found her lips, the custom grillz on her teeth glistening against the lighting. She didn't expect her to flirt back. Usually her playful flirting never received the same energy. "I'd love to do that actually. As long as you're okay with not playing it safe."
"I'm okay with anything that involves you." She surprised herself with that, unsure where the hell that came from but she couldn't go back on it. Y/n didn't respond, instead, pulling her phone from her pocket and passing it over to the blonde. "Put your number in. I'm gonna hold you to that."
As she typed it in, she couldn't wait to go tell her teammates and brag all about it. Stewie for sure thought she'd be the first one to get y/n's number so Sab was for sure gonna rub it in. She tucked her phone back into her pocket and glanced over to the pieces again. "What do you think of the exhibit?"
"I think it's really beautiful, nothing like I expected. I'm definitely beginning to appreciate the Met a lot more." Sabrina answered, rubbing her arms because it was very cold inside and she left her blazer at the table.
"Are you cold?"
"Oh- um, a little bit. I left my jacket at the table, but it's fine."
It was not fine to y/n. She was quick to pull off her blazer and pull it over Sabrina's shoulders, holding it so she could put her arms inside. "You're really sweet. Thank you," she mumbled, her cheeks beginning to hurt from smiling so much.
"So, you're skippin' Usher's performance to talk with me?" Y/n asked. She figured everyone was gonna be excited to see Usher's performance. The only reason she skipped it was so she could be by herself.
She chuckles, "are you faulting me for that?"ย
"No. I'm actually quite flattered you chose me over Usher. The ladies love Usher." She said it quite dramatically, a little mocking about it 'cause she found it amusing how much women freaked out over him when he was just a regular guy to her.
"That's true- my teammates are probably hyperventilating right now." Sab joked, making her laugh again. God, she loved that laugh. It was so contagious. "But, in my opinion, you're a lot better company than Usher. I mean...you wear a suit better than most of the men here and that says a lot because they actually dressed really well this year."
She held a hand over her chest, a touch bit dramatic. "You're very good at feeding my ego. Thank you."
She chuckled softly, nodding her head, "you're welcome."
"Y/n! What are you doing over here? Come on- you need to meet some people." Y/n sighed at her assistant's calls, the woman rushing over to take her hand. "I'm so sorry. I'll be at the after party if you wanna catch me again-" She rushed out before her assistant was dragging her away.
Now that made Sabrina panic just a little bit. She wasn't supposed to go to the after party tonight because she literally had practice tomorrow that she needed to be at. She rushed back to their table, JJ and Stewie turning to look at her, their jaws dropping when they recognized the blazer. "Are you wearing y/n's blazer? How'd you get that?"
She couldn't bother to answer, to busy trying to look over people and see if she could spot y/n anywhere. It was impossible in this crowd. She'd probably have a crowd of celebrities around her right now. She sat down, feeling completely defeated as Stewie was leaning over to get a closer look at the details on the blazer. "Dude, how did you get this?"
"She gave it to me because I was cold, and she was flirting with me the whole conversation until her assistant dragged her away." Sab explained, taking the glass of champagne to drink, only able to have a certain amount, obviously. You couldn't show up hungover at practice. That would not be a good look.
"What? Why are you right here? You gotta go find her." JJ encouraged, looking over her shoulder to see if she could spot the singer.
"That's impossible," Sab objected, downing the rest of the champagne. Stewie quickly grabbed the bottle of champagne to move out of her reach before she tried for another glass. "Okay, did you get her number at least?"
"Um..not exactly. She has my number but I don't have hers. And she said she'll see me at the after party but I'm not going to the after party and now I'll never see her again." She frowned, trying not to run her hand down her face. "I'm such an idiot."
"Oh, no. You're going." Stewie stated. She didn't care what she had to do. She was making sure Sabrina got the woman of her dreams.
"I don't even have an outfit-"
"Yes, you do. You can use that black dress you bought a couple weeks ago." JJ added, totally supportive of this idea.
"What about practice?"
"I'll cover for you, it's fine. You're going to that party." Stewie assured, and Sab sighs, not sure if this was a good idea.
The after party came by rather quick, y/n got there about 30 minutes after it started. Her after party look was more simple and comfortable. Just a tailored suit from an Alexander McQueen collection that she bought herself. She never borrowed her clothes or jewelry. She always bought it out of her own pocket.
"How long are you staying?" Rihanna asked, noticing how y/n kept looking around, eyes occasionally flickering to her watch like she had somewhere important to be. "Umm, I don't know. I'm kinda waiting for someone," she mumbled.
"Ooh, who is it?" Riri looked around as if she knew who this person would be.
"Sabrina. You know the blonde basketball player?" Rihanna pursed her lips, trying to remember if she met her. She talked to a lot of people at the exhibit so it was hard to remember exactly. "Wait- no, I remember. She had on your blazer when I met her. Is that why you're looking for her? You're tryna get it back?"
"Not exactly."
Riri smirked, slowly catching on, "okay, I see what this is. You like her."
Y/n smiled, shrugging her shoulder, "maybe a little bit."
Riri looked around, and smirked when she finally found Sabrina in the crowd of people, also looking around for y/n. She nudged her friend, "aye, I found your girl. The pretty blonde over there." Y/n turned to lay her eyes on the blonde, mumbling a small 'thank you' before making haste, pushing through the crowd of people to get to her.
When she got closer, she played it off casually like she bumped into her, not wanting to seem too desperate. "Oh, hey! You're here." Sabrina turned and smiled immediately, "yeah, I'm here. Such a nice party, right?" It seemed like she had the same idea, opting to play it off like it was her plan to attend the after party.
"It's alright. It's better now that you're here." She replied flirtatiously, a smirk itching up the corner of her lips.
She smiled, ducking her head to try and hide her flustered appearance with her hair. She was really thankful Stewie made her do this 'cause she didn't have enough time with y/n at the exhibit. "You're very sweet. Thank you. Um..but, I can't really stay long."
She frowned, not recalling Sabrina having a game tomorrow. "Really? Why not?"
"I have practice in the morning. I actually only came here to see you- cause I have your jacket." That wasn't the reason, but she didn't want to look desperate so jacket excuse it was. "Oh, um, where is it, darling?" She took a glance over at the blonde, and as beautiful as she looked in that dress, she wasn't wearing the blazer.
Trying to shake off the name, she awkwardly pursed her lips, "it's actually at my apartment..."
"I wasn't planning on stayin' long anyways. Why don't we go get it?" Y/n suggested without wasting a second thinking about it. She hesitated for a second simply because she was trying to remember if her apartment was clean. "Uh, yeah, sure."
She took her hand to lead her out of the party. The valet brought her car out to the front, Sabrina a little surprised she drove herself. Most celebrities tended to take the bus with their teams or have personal drivers. The valet tossed her the keys and she caught them before reaching to pull open the passenger door for the blonde.
Sabrina climbed inside, looking around at the interior, quite impressed with her taste in cars. It made some sense given y/n's best friend was an F1 driver. Of course she'd have good taste in cars. Y/n climbed into the driver's seat and shut the door. She started up the car and was quick to get out of there before paparazzi caught sight of her.
"What's your address?" She questioned, and Sab expected her to put it into her phone when she told her, but she didn't. "Do you know where that is?" Y/n nods confidently, taking a right turn, "yeah, I know my way around New York. I spend lots of time here. I got a penthouse just a couple blocks away."
"Oh, that's cool. I didn't know that. I should've guessed that 'cause you actually own a car. I don't think anyone genuinely enjoys driving in New York." Y/n chuckled, nodding in agreement with that statement. "It's a bitch for sure. Traffic is the worst. But, I just love bein' behind the wheel. It feels freeing no matter where I am."
"Even though you're just hearing car honks and yelling?"
That got the biggest laugh from her, and she nodded once again. "Absolutely. I enjoy the noise."
This was her chance. She promised Stewie and JJ she'd do it. It was the perfect opportunity. "Since you like the noise so much, maybe you should come to one of our games this season," she suggested. She hummed, liking the way she snuck that in subtly. She honestly didn't even need her to ask. She was gonna go anyways. "I'll be there, darling."
There it was again. That darling. It gave her butterflies every time. She always snuck it in so smoothly. "Good. Maybe I'll shoot a half court shot for you if you cheer me on loud enough."
"That sounds good to me." She pulled to a stop in front of the building, turning her head to face the athlete. "I'll be extra loud." What did that mean? Was y/n implying something else or was she just dirty minded? She sighed as y/n got out to walk around the door. Maybe she was just overthinking this. Y/n was a superstar and nowhere near her league...at least, she thought. She was going more off status and fame rather than looks.
Snapping herself out of it, y/n opened her door and held out her hand. She took it with a small smile and stepped out. Sabrina led her inside and to the elevator, hitting the button to the floor she was on. "You ever been to a WNBA game before?" She asked, not sure she'd ever seen y/n attend one. She'd only been seen at NBA games.
"Not yet, but I watch it all the time. I'm a big Lisa Leslie fan. My schedule just clashes with the games a lot. I barely even make it to NBA games 'cause I'm so busy." She explained, lifting her arm to check the time on her watch. She knew her phone was probably being blown up by her assistant right now. She had it silent to avoid that.
"Who's your favorite player from this generation?" Sabrina questioned, hoping she'd say her.
Her actual favorite player was A'ja Wilson, but she wasn't gonna say that. "Well, it's you of course. Were you expecting me to say Caitlin Clark or something?"
"A little bit, yeah. I seen you with that Iowa jersey in LA so..." y/n chuckled, remembering that day. She was a pretty big college basketball fan, even watched it more than the pros. It's how she first found out about Sabrina. She seen her play in Oregon. Of course Sabrina didn't know that.
"I grew up on college basketball. I watch it more than the pros. Iowa's my brother's favorite team so I rep the players." Sabrina smiled, actually liking that about her. It was a green flag to her. "That's actually really sweet. Who's your favorite team?"
"Ooh, that's tough." She rubbed her neck, trying to find a way to put this that didn't make her sound like a terrible basketball fan. "My brother actually hates this about me 'cause I don't really have one. But I do have my favorites, like USC, South Carolina, Notre Dame, UConn, Tennessee, LSU, and Iowa, obviously."
Sabrina pursed her lips, "I might have to side with your brother on that one. I get the other ones but...Notre Dame?"
"Okay, chill on Notre Dame." She chuckked, ready to defend her choice, "a lot of good players came out that school. I ain't really too big on their current roster but Sonia and Olivia were pretty solid. I've also mentioned Skylar in one of my songs before."
Sab nods, actually understanding where she was getting at. "Okay, I see your point. What do you like about UConn?" That was the real test. Her answer here determined a lot. "Right now? I'ma say Azzi Fudd. I know everyone goes with Paige, and she's great, don't get me wrong, but Azzi's somethin' else." That wasn't what she expecting, but it was a really good answer and proved that she was definitely a bigger fan than anyone expected.
"Alright, I like you again. You lost me at Notre Dame but you got me back." Sabrina joked, the elevator doors opening up as y/n grinned. "Sounds like Notre Dame is the trigger word. I'll keep that in mind."
She chuckled, leading her down the hall to her apartment. She unlocked the door and let her inside. The lights switched on and y/n glanced around, Sabrina making her way over to her bedroom. "Come on," she waved her over and y/n followed her. She picked up the blazer on the chair in the corner, but she wasn't in a rush to give it back.
"So...did you design this yourself or..?" She internally wanted to her smack herself for being so terrible at this. Talking to girls should've been easy. Why was this so hard? "Uh, yeah, most of it. My designer kinda freaked out when she heard I gave it away to a pretty blonde. I really appreciate you keepin' it safe for me, darling."
She took a subtle breath, trying to compose herself as she slowly set the blazer into y/n's outstretched hand. "It was no problem."
Y/n rubbed her neck, trying to find a way to put these words together without sounding like a creep. "Uh, to be honest wit' you, I didn't just come here for the jacket, as grateful as I am." Sabrina smiled, furrowing her brows to play dumb. She was hoping this was going where she wanted it to go. There's a reason she kept the blazer in her bedroom. "Really? Why'd you come then?"
Y/n tossed the blazer on the chair, "for this." She stepped forward, setting a hand on her cheek before connecting their lips. She kissed her slowly, expertly moving against her soft lips. She trailed her fingers down her jaw, sliding down the back of her neck to reach the zipper of her dress. It slipped off her shoulders, exposing her soft skin.
Sabrina pulled away, slipping her hands under y/n's blazer, signaling her to take it off. She did with ease and then the blonde hurried to unbutton her vest. She was slowly getting frustrated with all the layers of the suit, needing to see her bare skin. Y/n chuckles, taking her hands to stop her, "easy, easy, go lay down beautiful. I'll take it off."
She stripped herself down to her trousers and a simple red bra. Sabrina smirked, ready to take that off herself. She grabbed onto the waistband of her trousers to pull her down, eager to connect their lips again. After a long moment, she broke away to unbutton the trousers and y/n stepped back to pull them off. Sabrina smiled cutely at the pretty matching set. "You sure love to match, don't you?"
She shrugs, a pretty smile finding her face, "I like to be on theme."
Morning came around, Sabrina woke up in a cold empty bed. She frowned at the empty space beside that was previously filled with her favorite singer. But, turning around to check the time on her nightstand, she noticed the bouquet of flowers and card. She smiled, taking the flowers into her hand and opening the card. It read ~ thanks for making my night. hopefully I can make yours on May 12th ~
Her eyes widened in realization, the date pinned on her mental calendar. That was her preseason game in Oregon. She looked back to the card to read the rest of it. ~ hope you like the flowers, they're red to remind you of me ;) have a nice practice darling ~
She sat up, the biggest smile on her face. She took a long inhale of the red roses, eyes slowly opening to land on the chair in the corner. There it was. Y/n's blazer. She left it again.
Of course she did.
