the five of them landed in an alleyway. destruction all around them

"alright, we all have our assignments, two stones uptown, one stone down. stay low. keep an eye on the clock. nana you're coming with me"

they all turned to watch the hulk smash down a car on some alien

bruce looked down ashamed

"maybe smash a few things along the way" steve nodded

"i think it's gratuitous, but whatever" bruce said while ripping off his tank top, he walked into the street and loosely slammed his fist onto a car, then he picked up a motorcycle and threw it away

evi was standing next to steve in front of the elevator.

"okay cap and evi, i got our scepter in the elevator just passing the 80th floor"

"on it" steve responded pressing the button "head to the lobby"

"alright i see you there" tony said

the elevator opened and steve and evi were met with dozens of men in black suits

"captain? i thought you were coordination search and rescue? and who's this girl?"

"change of plans" steve responded "and she's an ally fury sent"

evi kept quiet, which wasn't like her normally, but by speaking she would show her accent, which wasn't a good idea. especially at times like these a russian or sokovian accent was always suspicious of being with hydra, which she was back then, technically, but still. of course it was their plan to reveal that they were with that organization, but like steve said, they had to do it slowly, unsuspiciously or else they would reveal themselves

"hey cap"

"rumlow"

evi noticed how agent rumlows hand travelled to his weapon in the holster, steve seemed like he had noticed too

"i just got a call from the secretary" he said "i'm gonna be running point on the scepter"

the man with the glasses turned around. "sir? i don't unterstand"

"we got word there might be an attempt to steal it"

"sorry cap" rumlow said "we can't give you the scepter"

"i'm gonna have to call the director"

"that's okay, trust me" steve leaned forward to whisper something into the agents ear "hail hydra"

a few seconds later steve had the briefcase in his hand and they both were walking out of the elevator.

"thank you, boys" evi waved, revealing her accent to which the agents smiled like she had just given them another proof why it was right to trust the captain

evi and steve turned the corner. listening to what was going on with tony and scott, without being able to put any sense to it

"tony, what's going on?" steve asked

"tell me you found that cube.." he paused looking at the person in front of them "oh, you gotta be shutting me"

"i have eyes on loki" exclaimed the 2012 steve rogers into his comms "14th floor"

"i'm not loki" steve said while setting down the briefcase "and i don't wanna hurt you"

they both ran at each other and started fighting

"i'll sit this one out, yeah?"

"no problem, sweetheart"

evi turned around and looked at the bookshelf down the hall

"you can get down here" steve called after a few minutes of fighting and him falling down a few floors

evi walked to get the elevator, stopping next to steve a few minutes later

"i used the scepter on him" steve said at her questioning gaze "now come one" he walked away from the unconscious version of himself

"i'm coming" evi called, before she kneeled beside 2012 steve

she put a little folded piece of paper into his pocket and placed a kiss on his cheek, while her steve was watching her from down the hallway

"what did you give him?"

"a note" she smiled mysteriously

"what did it say?"

"i can't tell you" she laughed

they walked back into the alleyway together, where tony and scott were already waiting for them, sitting in a demolished car

"cap, evi" he said "sorry, guys. we got a problem"

scott scoffed "yeah we do"

they explained what had happened

"well, what are we gonna do now?" asked steve

"you know what steve? i just got hit in the head with the hulk"

"you said that we had one shot, this was our shot, we shot it, it's shot. six stones or nothing, it was six stones or nothing"

"you're repeating yourself, you know that? you're repeating yourself"

"no"

"you never wanted a time heist. you weren't on board with the time heist-"

"i dropped the ball"

"-you ruined the time heist"

"is that what i did?"

"yeah"

"could you guys stop fighting?" evi pleaded

"are there any other options with the tesseract?" steve asked

"no, no, no, there's no other options. there's no do-overs. we're not going anywhere else. we have one particle left. each! that's it, alright?! we use that, bye-bye, you're not going home"

"yeah, well if we don't try, then no one else is going home, either"

"i got it" said tony "theres another way to retake the tesseract and acquire new particles"

"little stroll down memory lane. military installation, garden state."

"when where they both there?" asked steve

evi realized what was about to happen "1970" she said

steve and tony turned to her in surprise

"that's correct" tony muttered

"what are you talking about?" scott asked "where are we going?"

"i know for a fact they were there" said tony, completely ignoring scott

"who's they? what are we doing?"

"and i know how i know"

"guys what is it?"

"looks like we're improvising" steve said

"great" tony nodded

"what are we improvising?"

"scott, get this back to the compound" steve advised while giving the scepter to the confused man

"suit up" tony said

"what's in new jersey?" scott asked

"don't worry about it, scott" evi said, while she held out her arm, so her father and tony could make the right readjustments "i promise you that everything will be fine"

scott nodded, evi could see that he trusted her, even if they had only known each other for a short time

"you knew spider-man, right?" she asked him, unsure if peter had revealed his identity to the man

"i did, yes" scott answered, confused what any of this had to do with spider-man

"i really want to see him again" evi explained "also my sister, just so you know that we need to do this and it will work. you have my word. i wouldn't risk getting stuck in a time zone where i would never see them again"

"okay" scott nodded "i trust you"

"thank you, scott" evi smiled before her and the other two men disappeared

"clearly you weren't actually born here right?" tony asked while him and the two rogers walked down the sidewalk of camp leigh

"the idea of me was" steve said

"right. well, imagine you're S.H.I.E.L.D. running a quasi-fascistic intelligence organization, where do you hide it?"

"in plain sight" steve nodded towards a bunker like building

they made their way inside and took the elevator downstairs, a woman joining them

"good luck on your mission, captain" tony had turned to steve before he walked out of the elevator

"good luck on your project, doctor" steve responded

"you new here?" the woman leaned forward

"not exactly" steve answered

"that's your daughter?" the woman asked again

"yes she is"

"hello" said evi with a smile towards the woman. she tried to hide her accent as best as she could

luckily just a second later, the elevator dinged once again and steve and her stepped outside, walking down the hallway

evi waited outside while steve searched for the formula

when he walked back into the hallway, evi was able to warn him about the approaching woman from the elevator, who had gotten security, they were fast enough to hide in a random room

steve noticed a picture of himself on the office desk they were standing in front of, he turned back to read the name on the door to the office

"i said bring them in" a woman exclaimed in the other room.

"they're trying ma'am but braddock's unit has been stopped by lightning strikes"

"oh for the love of.. i'll look at the weather projections"

evi looked at steve, who was looking at the woman like she was hypnotizing him, he stepped closer, looking through the blinds, before she walked out

"that's her isn't it?" evi asked softly noticing her fathers said expression "that's the woman you lost"

"how do you know?"

"there's always a woman isn't there?" she sighed "you could stay here, i'm keeping you from that"

"no you're not" steve said "i would never go back. that's not my life anymore. and now there's you. and i presume my help is still needed"

evi looked up at her father with teary eyes. "okay" she smiled. following him back to the elevator, after they checked if it was safe to do so

"she'll be here any second now" evi said when the nearly reached the door.

"i'll wait here" she said "and remember act surprised" she looked at steve and he nodded, she watched him step outside

"steve?" she could hear her younger self ask

"evi?"

she opened the door just a little bit and watched as steve hugged the girl in front of him. which looked like she had just stumbled out of a battlefield, which she had obviously

evi closed the door again and let herself slowly slide down the wall, while she closed her eyes

she took everything in her to concentrate on what she wanted to do.

the first thing she would do is try out if it worked, she would only travel a short distance. to wanda. five years, so if anything went wrong she wasn't too far gone.

she tried to picture her dyed red hair, her face, the features that would erupt into a smile whenever evi would do something silly.

still with her eyes closed, evi registered the feeling of falling down. it wasn't pleasant, but she stayed through it

when she opened her eyes, she was somewhere else
