HOLY SMOKES

twenty-two. or longer

“Nervous?” Magnolia asked, glancing over at Boone as they pulled into the driveway of her childhood home. His left hand was tight around the steering wheel of her Bronco, the other firmly on her thigh, and he had slowed to a creep up the long gravel path.

“No.”

She giggled at him, her smile bright as she looked over at him, her right hand over his hand, “everything’s gonna be alright. We’ve survived two tornadoes, this should be a breeze.”

“Your dad hates me.”

“You’re not that same boy I brought home eleven years ago. You’re a very successful YouTube personality.”

“‘Cause that’s gonna go over well.”

“Thought you didn’t care what he thought of you, said so yourself.” She mused as he slowed to a stop behind her daddy’s pickup and her mama’s SUV.

“I don’t, but I don't want him to hate me either.” He put it in park then turned to face her, his hand still on her thigh. “When we have kids, I don’t want things to be weird. I want our kids to grow up in a loving family.”

Her smile grew and she leaned over, ignoring the pain in her shoulder, then she pressed a kiss to his lips, “and they will. I love you and he’ll come around. Promise.”

He nodded, a soft smile on his face as she settled back into her seat before climbing out of the car and he followed suit, and once he was close enough he laced his finger through hers.

They started towards the house, but before they ever reached the porch, Mary opened the door with a smile, “Maggie!”

“Hey, mama!” Magnolia pulled her hand from Boone’s and rushed to hug her mom, who she hadn’t seen in about a year. “I missed you.”

“I missed you, too, honey.” Mary squeezed, kissing the top of her head before she pulled back. “What happened to your arm?” She asked, eyeing the sling on her left arm.

Magnolia chuckled a little, “that’s a long story. But, mama, I have somethin’ else to tell you, and daddy.”

Mary smiled, “come on in, dinner’s on the stove.”

Magnolia looked over at Boone, holding her right hand out and he took a breath before making his way towards them. Mary, having just noticed him, gave him a once over with a furrowed brow.

“You look…” realization washed over her features. “Boone?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He nodded, offering his hand. “It’s real nice to see you again.” She shook his hand, a smile pulling at her lips.

“Well, y’all come on inside.” She waved them towards the house. “Making some fried chicken.”

Boone smiled, happy that she seemed happy to see him again, “I love fried chicken.” He told her as they followed her into the house.

“Henry, look who stopped by.” Mary called out and the man pushed himself up from his chair.

He looked shorter than Boone remembered, but back then, Boone had been just a kid.

“Who-” he trailed off upon seeing his daughter, a smile tugging at his lips. “Magnolia.”

“Hi, daddy,” she moved across the room, meeting him in a hug.

“What brings you to town?”

“Well, I had some business in Oklahoma.” She told him as she pulled back. “And, daddy, um…”

Boone shifted on his feet, the movement drawing Henry's attention to him, and Henry knew exactly who it was.

“H-Hello, Mr. Carrington.” His voice shook a little, but he steadied it, standing tall as Henry made his way towards him. Henry’s face was in readable as he came to a stop, then with a small he extended his hand out to the boy.

“Good to see you again, son.”

Boone was shocked, but shook his hand. “You too.”

“Good to see ya again.” He hummed before looking over at Magnolia, and he saw the ring on her finger. "Glad it's you."

"Wha-what?"

"I know about the ring, about-"

“What ring?” Mary called out as she rushed back into the room from the kitchen, her eyes dropping to Magnolia’s left hand. “Oh, honey. It's beautiful."

Magnolia swallowed hard, watching her dad, “daddy?"

“You know,” he started, looking at Boone once again. “I’ve kept track of you.”

“Y-You did?”

He nodded, “I admit it wasn’t for the right reasons, wanted to make sure you stayed away from Maggie-”

Daddy-”

“Let me finish,” he held his hand up a little, an easy smile on his face. “You made somethin’ of yourself. Watch all your videos, even got me one of them Tornado Wrangler mugs. I was wrong back then, and I never got the chance to apologize.”

“O-oh, you don’t-”

“I was-” Mary cleared her throat, “I am a stubborn man. And I wanted the best for my daughter, just wish that I had realized that it was you back then. Could’ve saved Maggie a lot of years of pain. But I can’t change the past.”

Boone just looked at him with wide eyes, his mouth opening and closing.

“Daddy, what are you sayin’?”

He turned towards his daughter, “I just want you to be happy, Maggie. I’m sorry for all the years we fought. And if he’s the man you wanna marry, then I ain’t gettin’ in the way.”

Magnolia was in tears as she neared him, wrapping her arm around him as he squeezed her, “thank you.”

“Hey, Maggie, can-can you pinch me.” Boone mumbled. “I ain’t sure if this is real, or if I got another concussion.”

The three Carringtions chuckled as Magnolia made her way towards him, but she didn’t pinch him, she merely kissed his cheek, “it’s real, baby.”

“Y’all come eat now,” Mary called out. “So, when am I gettin’ grandbabies?”

“Ma, we ain’t even gotten married yet, one thing at a time.” Magnolia told her as they all settled at the table.

“Hopefully, soon.” Boone added, piling some green beans onto his plate.

“Boone,” the blonde mumbled, giving him a wide-eyed look. “We got a weddin’ to plan.”

“And it’ll be perfect,” he leaned over and kissed her cheek. “But first, I gotta get you a real ring.”

“I like my ring.” He pouted slightly, spinning it on her finger.

“You deserve a real ring,” he insisted and she smiled at him. The same look in her eyes from when she was seventeen. Mary smiled at the two, before looking over at Henry, who also wore a smile.

"Wait, you watch the Tornado Wranglers?" Magnolia asked, what he'd said finally sinking in.

"Yep," Henry nodded, and he chuckled as Magnolia's eyes went wide, the look on her face matching Boone's.

If he watched their videos, then he had seen almost everything from the past couple of weeks. He knew before they ever pulled into the driveway.

That night, Boone and Magnolia were cuddled up in the back of her bronco as they watched the stars. They were parked in their spot and it was well after midnight.

“Thank you,” she mumbled, curling into his bare chest.

“For what?” He pulled his fingers through her hair, looking down at her as she kissed his chest.

“Comin’ here. I haven’t seen them in a while, haven’t been home in even longer. And I needed a break after… everythin’.”

“Me too,” he told her, his voice soft. “That was scary. And there was no way in hell that was gonna let you come alone. Don’t think I could go that long without seein’ you, it might kill me.”

She giggled, shaking her head a little, “still, I appreciate it. I know the crew needs you-”

“They can manage just fine without me for a couple of weeks.” He kissed her forehead. “Or longer.”

“What are you talkin’ about?” She asked, pushing herself up so she was looking down at him.

“What I do is dangerous, and that never really mattered before. But I can’t – I won’t – risk losin’ you. I-I can’t. Not like that, not because of what I do.”

“I told you, I ain’t lettin’ you quit.”

“But, angel, I’ve almost lost you more times than I like to think about-”

She cut him off with a kiss, “you love what you do. You love the crew. You love storms. I won’t be the reason you quit. I told you that I can handle it, if I can't then I'll figure out how. And I kinda like it, when giant fan blades aren’t tryin’ to crush us. So, no. You ain’t quittin’.”

“You're my whole heart, angel.” He smiled as he leaned up, pressing his lips against hers as he pulled her on top of him. “I love you.”

She smiled against his lips, “I love you.” She slotted her lips against his again, her hands in his hair as his hand gripped her hips, moving her against him. She moaned, her eyes fluttering closed as she pulled away from his lips.

He smiled, doing it again, forcing another sweet sound from her parted lips, “fuck, baby, you sound so pretty.”

She shifted against him, pressing her hips down and he groaned, his eyes rolling back as he dropped his head against the blankets underneath them. “So, do you,” she mumbled, kissing his jaw as she rolled her hips against his again.

“That’s it, good girl.” He mumbled and she nearly whimpered at the praise, which he knew she loved.

More. Need more,” she mumbled, as sat up, her hands tugging his boxers down his legs.

“You’re gonna be the death of me,” he mumbled, pulling her back on top of him, her chest against his as she pressed her lips against his.

“We should get married-” she choked on a moan.

“What?” He mumbled, his brain a little hazy.

“I wanna… get married here.”

“I’ll marry you anywhere, angel.” He gripped her hips, shifting his hips up and she moaned as he slid against her underwear, the only fabric separating them. “Anywhere, anytime, any place. But right now, I really need-” she silenced him with a kiss, making him groan, then he rolled, putting her on her back. He quickly pulled her underwear down her legs, leaving kisses from her ankle all the way up her body and just as he pressed his lips against hers, he rolled his hips into hers and she gasped against his mouth – like she always did.
