BLAISE ZABINI

"Serpens Sanguinis"
The door to the Slytherin common room swung open and I begun the long decent into the dungeons below.

The Slytherin common room was a long, low underground room with rough stone walls and ceilings, from which round, green tinged lamps hung on thick iron chains.
A roaring emerald fire was crackling under an elaborately carved mantel adorned with a portrait of a silver serpent, and several familiar figures were silhouetted around it in carved mahogany chairs.

"Blaise!" Millicent beamed, beckoning me with a wave of her hand to come sit with with her before the fire. She shifted up on the leather love seat as I sat in the only empty seat besides her. "Where have you been?"

"I'm not even late?" I said with a frown, "I came straight from Divination."

"Still..." She fawned, placing a hand on my thigh that I quickly swiped off. "I was worried about you, we all were. We heard Umbridge lost her shit with your class this morning and didn't know if you'd been caught up in it."

I let out a low laugh as I deliberately said the words I knew would catch his attention, "It wasn't me. It was that girl, Mara Williams."

Instantly his entire body tensed as he sat up from where he had been laying with his head on Pansy Parkinson's lap, who pouted at the absence of affection, "What's wrong Draco?"

"What happened?" Asked Goyle grimly, shutting his book, though I highly doubted he had even been reading it in the first place. "That's the Dermstrang transfer right?"

"Yeah and you should've seen her today, she stood up to Umbridge and everything. That girl has a serious pair of balls." I grinned, unable to hold back a smile as I remembered how the entire class had held their breathe with morbid fascination the moment Mara dared talk back.
It was like watching a car wreck, everyone knew it was going to end badly, but yet we couldn't look away.

"Of course she did." Malfoy reclaimed his headspace on Pansy's thighs as she played absentmindedly with his pale hair. "She's getting to big for her own boots."

"I wouldn't be so sure..." My smile faded, "Looked to me like someone had tried to put her in her place, looked like she'd been in some sort of fight, and a bad one at that."

"What do you mean?" Millicent Bulstrode asked haughtily, shooting a look to Pansy. "She's only just got here, and now she's already starting shit... I think we should sort her out, don't you agree Pansy?"

I shrugged, "She had cuts and scratches all over her face, she was quite messed up."

I looked to see how Malfoy would react, but he didn't. He didn't even flinch.
-But as much as he tried to hide it I could see something simmering just below the surface, he just didn't dare show it as he spoke in a dangerously low tone that caused an acrid feeling of dread to tighten in the pit of my stomach.
"Find out who it was. If any of the Slytherins have been messing with her I want to know. Who's she dormed with?"

"Granger and Patil." Answered Crabbe instantly, evidently proud to be part of the conversation by the smug look on his fat face.

I shook my head, "They couldn't have done this." Malfoy nodded slightly, looking preoccupied as Pansy toyed with his hair lovingly.

Goyle scratched his thick skull, "What about Potter and Weasley?"

"No, Potters a pretentious bellend but he's not violent." Drawled Malfoy, the low lantern light doing nothing to soften his harsh features.
-But that was why the girls like Pansy and Millicent lusted after him so. Everything about him was hard and dangerous. "...And as for Weasly I doubt he even knows how to spell his own name without sounding it out."

Crabbe and Goyle's raucous laughter flooded the common room, only peirced by Pansy Parkinson's shriek and Millicent's high feminine giggle.
Pansy tried to hard to get Draco to like her, to the point where it was so obvious to everyone except him.
Of course he had never even looked at her in that way, who would, everything about the girl cried for attention.
It was verging on pitiful, she wanted so desperately to be loved, more so than anything else, to the point where she repelled it.

Green flames broke with a crack, wood splitting and spitting its dissonance to the smoke that curled like aged fingers from the foundations of the hearth. I couldn't tear my gaze from it, the same emerald shade as Mara William's eyes. "Seriously though she was pretty fucked up."

"So what?" Millicent's jealousy dripped from her words like venom. "Why do you lot care? She's a Gryffindor."

"She's not really though," There was something strange about that girl. "She was clearly meant to be in Slytherin."

Crabbe and Goyle nodded dumbly in agreement. Malfoy didn't react, instead staring intently into the emerald flames, his face just as grim as ever and I wondered if he saw the same things I did when I looked into the raging fire.

Pansy raised her eyebrows, barely disguised distain slipping through the cracks in her cold countenance, Millicent nodding along in agreement with every vile word she said. "I don't understand why you're all so obsessed with her anyways. She's not even that pretty, and I heard that she psycho stalked her ex, which is why she had to move schools."

Malfoy scoffed and they all fell silent, "Do you even know why she was kicked out of Dermstrang?"

"...Didn't even know she went to Dermstrang." Crabbe mumbled, more to himself than anyone else and Goyle gave him a slight nudge as he whispered, "Isn't that a boys school?"

"It was Goyle, at least until they made an exception her... Rumour has it, daddy dearest paid them off."
Malfoys face had regained its usual cunning smirk, and I could see Millicent practically dribbling out of the corner of me eye, hanging desperately off of his every word.

"-But then why was she expelled?"

"...For using unforgivable curses." Malfoy drawled, running his tongue along the length of his sharp canines like a dog ready to feast.
To him she was just another challenge, he wanted to break the unbreakable. How far could he push her before she snapped?

"What a fucking freak." Pansy spat, her lip curling upwards in a horrid snarl. "Who even does something like that?"

My mouth ran dry. Mara couldn't have done something like that... Could she? Maybe Malfoy was right and the sweet little new girl wasn't so innocent after all. "Do you know which one?"

Draco's smirk only spread wider, taking a sick kind of pleasure in her pain. "She used the Cruciatus curse on her boyfriend... Well, now Ex-boyfriend."

I was speechless, and for a very long moment my mouth only opened and closed, no words would find the strength to be felt, let alone heard. "-But she must've had a reason..."

His pale eyes seered angrily into me. "Why?"

"Because she's not like that!"

"Oh yeah," He challenged, arching an eyebrow at me as he shoved Pansy away from him and sat upright. "-And how would you know Zabini?"

I didn't have an answer for him. The truth was I had never seen Malfoy this way before and I wasn't quite sure how to respond, so I didn't.
There was cowardice in my silence, an unspoken submission, but despite this he didn't back down, his voice hushing sharply to a hiss. "Unless you two have been sneaking around behind my back?"

"Don't be ridiculous." I snapped, folding my arms over my chest. The rest of the Slytherins remained deadly silent, whether because they were eager to listen in or didn't want to further anger Draco I couldn't tell.

"Just because you want to stick your dick in her doesn't make her innocent." He snarled.
-Was he... Jealous?

...Yes, there it was, however slight once noticed it couldn't be unseen. I could almost taste bitter tinge of jealousy that tainted his words black as he continued. "Have you ever even spoken to her? Because I have... And let me tell you now that girl's guilty as sin."

"Of course I have!" My face scrunched in distaste, why did I feel like this was turning into an unspoken competition of who had experienced the most contact Mara Williams. "Draco you know I have, she's my partner in potions."

"Oh yeah," He let out a sharp laugh, entirely devoid of humour. "I've watched you two in Snape's class, you practically drooling over her, acting as her little slave in hopes that one day she might let you in her pants."

"Shut up Malfoy!" The shout came from my lips before I could stop it but he didn't so much as blink, instead I think it amused him, to see one of his own rise up against him.

He cocked his head. "Or what?"
When I didn't respond he rolled his eyes with a flash of white teeth, "That's what I thought."

My face burned with a foreign heat, and I stared down at my fists that were balled in my lap in shame. I'd never felt this way before.

"Who was her boyfriend?" Goyle asked quietly after a while.

Millicent burst out with grin, revealing rows of crooked teeth and dampening the awkward air that had begun to settle among us. "That's what you got out of that? Seriously Goyle not you too, it's bad enough watching Blaise salivate over her. You lot are dogs."

Pansy took it upon herself to tuck away the stray strand of hair that had fallen over Draco's face with a delicate finger as she smirked at me. "Careful Zabini, you play with fire.. You get burned."
