Chapter 25 ~ Negotiating at the Dinner Table

We all gathered around the table in the dining room as Jesus sat down. I slid into one of the chairs opposite him and Carl sat beside me.

"So, how'd you get out?" Rick asked from beside him.

Jesus just shrugged, "One guard can't cover two exits or third floor windows. Knots untie and locks get picked. Entropy comes from order, right?"

"Right," Daryl said gruffly and I smirked at dad's brusqueness in dealing with strangers.

"I checked out your arsenal. I haven't seen anything like that in a long time," Jesus spoke again, "You're well-equipped, but your provisions are low. Very low for the amount of people you have. 54?"

Rick shifted uncomfortably in his chair, elbow resting on the table beside him.

"More than that," Maggie bit back and I smirked at Jesus.

"Well, I appreciate the cookie. My compliments to the chef," he said jokingly and I rolled my dark eyes.

"Yeah, she ain't here," Daryl told him and I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.

Who were they talking about? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd met a lot of the people at Alexandria already but it's not like I went out rubbing elbows with them all - I was too much of a Dixon for that. Jesus glanced up at Daryl and sighed.

"Look, we got off to a bad start. But we're on the same side-- the living side. You and Rick had every reason to leave me out there, but you didn't. I'm from a place that's a lot like this one. Part of my job is searching out other settlements to trade with," he began to tell us and I rested one hand on my stomach absentmindedly, "I took your truck because my community needs things, and both of you looked like trouble. I was wrong. You're good people. And this is a good place. I think our communities may be in a position to help each other,"

"Do you have food?" Glenn interrupted him.

I cracked a smile at him, "Always thinking with your stomach, Glenn?"

He rolled his eyes playfully at my question.

"We've started to raise livestock. We scavenge, we grow. Everything from tomatoes to sorghum," Jesus supplied and I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips.

"Wow. Now that there is a criminally underrated grain that could change the game with our food situation from scary to hunky-dunky," I quipped, not bothering to cover the grin that found its way on my face.

Rick shot me a look to silence me but I saw Daryl chuckling in the corner. Behind me, I could just make out Eugene whispering to Abraham.

"Did you just hear that? I believe she was mocking me..."

I bit my lip and smiled down at the table as Rick continued to question Jesus. Just then, I felt fingers enclose over mine and I glanced up to see Carl looking back at me. Squeezing his hand slightly, a blush rose to my cheeks and I smiled over at him which he returned with a smirk that made me blush even deeper.

"Your world's about to get a whole lot bigger." Jesus said suddenly, leaning back in his chair and I realized that I'd missed most of the conversation.

I leaned closer to Carl and whispered, "What's going on?"

He shook his head at me and mouthed 'I don't know' before shooting me a smile.

I chuckled, shaking my head at his antics. Suddenly, the front door opened and I heard the sound of footsteps head towards the dining room. And instantly in the doorway, there stood a person I hoped I'd never see again in my life. A pit formed in my stomach as Rick smiled over at her and gestured to Jesus.

"Carol, meet Jesus."
