Chapter 39 * No Rest for the Wicked *
In my heart, I knew that Jack would do anything to repay Pompous Princess. He was indebted to her and felt it was his duty. But he was free. She had released him from his servitude and in my eyes, his debt had been paid in full. I admired him for that, though I'd never tell him. His sense of justice was honorable... It's too bad I had none.
My fingers slid over the cool metal of the tiny pistol I'd filched from Jane's shop. The only way to end all of this...this constant tie to Langwidere was obvious. She needed to die. Die for all of the heartless cold cruelty she'd inflicted on everyone. She deserved this fate. Hatred had grown in my heart for her long ago, although unbeknownst to Jack.
I made my way quietly through the palace and to the balcony over-looking the front room where Jack and I had been brought once he'd been sold to the Princess. But someone had nearly beaten me to it. Standing on the other side of the balcony was Langwidere and the Wizard, a gun in his hand pointed to her head.
"If you make me kill her, you all die!" The Wizard roared down to the men below, their guns pointed at him.
Well, that's a choice he's not going to have to make. Lifting my gun up, I aimed it at the Princess's head. My heart raced in my chest as my fingers clenched the trigger. Suddenly, without a thought in my head of the consequences, I squeezed hard on the trigger and the bullet shot out of the chamber. It whistled through the air before embedding itself in Langwidere's forehead, hitting its target with perfect precision. A cold smug smile spread across my face as she slowly tumbled down from the balcony to the tiled floor below.
Shots rang out then as the guards chased after the Wizard who they believed had shot her. I flew down the stairs to where she lay and grinned down at her lifeless body. Finally! She was dead. I probably should have felt guilt or shame for what I'd done. Instead, all I felt was joy.
She was finally out of Jack's life for good. And mine as well. No more living under her rule. No more having to watch her be cruel to Jack. No more Langwidere. But my happiness was short-lived as I heard someone walk up behind me. Turning around to face the person, I wish I never had.
Jack's normally misty-gray eyes had hardened to steel and shock was written all over his face.
"You...you killed her?" Jack asked, unbelieving.
The pistol dropped from my hand to the floor with a clatter and I shook my head.
"Jack, she-she never would have left you alone! She deserved this! For her cruelty and everything in between!" I said, justifying my actions.
But something in his eyes had changed. That usual look of trust, of love that had always shone through when he looked at me was gone. Stepping towards the body, cautious not to get too close to me, he picked up Langwidere in his arms gently. He shot me one last cold look before stalking out the door. My chest clenched with anxiety and I felt the rush of hot tears begin to spill down my cheeks unprecedented as my knees hit the floor. What had I done?
Note: Okay, so I just want to make it clear before the comments - lol - that Dawn isn't upset that she killed Langwidere, she has no remorse for that. But she IS upset that she's lost Jack's trust in her and possibly his love as well. So yeah, she hasn't gone all soft lol XD
