Chapter 26 * The Wizard of Kansas *
"How do you know our names?" Dorothy asked him, gun raised.
He stayed silent but she pressed on.
"Answer me! How do you know our names?" she repeated.
"I've known you two since the day you were born. Here. In Oz... I would never hurt you," he confessed, his voice softer than it had been before.
My eyes widened in shock but I could tell by the look in his eyes that he meant it genuinely. But how was that possible?!
"You've been trying to kill me since I got here," Dorothy snapped.
"Yes, but how could I know it was you two? That you were no threat?" the Wizard said.
"And what makes you think we're not?" I asked him, arching an eyebrow.
"Is that why you're here? To kill me? To take me back home? Your mother wouldn't approve..." he said softly.
Dorothy and I shared a glance and I felt a pain in my chest at the mention of Karen. We lowered our weapons slightly then.
"I loved your mother very much..." he confessed.
"You loved her?" I asked, unbelieving.
"And she...loved me..."
Tears pricked my chocolate-brown eyes and I felt a ripple of shock go through me. Was...was this man our father?
"What else can you tell us about our mother?" Dorothy questioned him.
I almost snorted. Ever the law enforcement officer.
"You can ask me anything you want...but I owe you that much-" he started, getting up from his chair.
"Stay back!" my twin ordered, aiming her gun at him again.
He put his hands up in surrender before letting them fall to his sides
"Just give me the gun and I'll answer all your questions," he told her.
Dorothy hesitated and for a second, I thought she'd give it to him but she didn't.
"No," she replied simply.
"One bullet then,"
"A bullet?"
"One. As a gesture of trust,"
Dorothy pulled a bullet from the chamber slowly before dropping it into the Wizard's hand, "One bullet."
"That's how I'll earn both of your trust." he smiled at us.
Suddenly, the loud thud of footsteps raced into the room and a wizard guard with long curly black hair stood before us, his sword raised at me and my twin.
