Chapter 25 * So We Meet Again *
After our kiss, a blushing Jack retired back to the palace. I, on the other hand, was wide-awake. I couldn't possibly sleep a wink. Jack had taken the dagger to give back to me when he had come to find me earlier. He made me take it with me now plus insisted I wear a mask so as to protect myself as I walked the streets. I bit my lip as thoughts him and the sweet kiss we'd shared replayed on repeat in my mind.
I shook my head then as I refocused my attention on exploring. Emerald City looked so different at night. People in masks chattered away to each other as they walked, still buzzed from the festival earlier. Couldn't blame them though. From what I'd heard it had been fantastic. All things in Oz were...
Stars began to appear in the night sky overhead then. Darkness fell fast, even in the city it seemed. My combat boots crunched on the pavement as I finally made my way back to the palace. That was enough night life for me. I climbed a white stone staircase that led up to the palace and walked through a balcony hallway on the side past other civilians. Up ahead, I saw light coming from an open archway and smiled as I stepped into the room, soft music filling my ears.
I'd made my way back on my own. But wait...this...this room wasn't mine and Jack's. Where was I?! I glanced around, my brown hair flicking behind my shoulder as I did. Finely upholstered chairs and couches were scattered all around with a roaring fireplace warming the place from the inside out. A phonograph stood beside one of the couches while a lamp stood on the other.
I ran my hand across it and then frowned when my fingers slid across something very familiar. A cord. To be more specific, an electrical cord. Which to my knowledge, albeit as limited as it was of this place, didn't even exist in this world. I followed the cord, unsheathing my emerald-encrusted dagger and holding it in front of me. I pushed through a filmy curtain and walked into another room.
Glancing down at aside table, I noticed a cassette tape player sitting there. So that was where the music was coming from. Suddenly, I noticed a man sitting in a chair close by. His back was turned to me though and I couldn't see his face. I hit the 'off' button on the player and began to walk over to him when I collided with someone. The other person groaned and beneath my mask, my dark brown eyes locked with theirs.
But wait! Those eyes! They mirrored my own. Slowly, I removed my mask, my dagger still aimed at the other person. Soft brown strand of hair fell all around my face just as the other masked person removed theirs. I almost gasped when I saw their face. We both opened our mouths to speak but were cut off by the man who had just now spotted us.
"Dawn? Dorothy?"
