Chapter 1 * Meeting Him *
Darkness and a bitter cold that seeped through my clothes, deep down into my bones. That was all I could feel, all I could see when we crash-landed in this strange world. Doubtless there was more I should have remembered upon arriving - like how it was even remotely possible to be sucked up into a cyclone and dropped here in the first place but I couldn't. It was like I'd come here with a blank slate. My twin sister, Dorothy, had been upset to find the woman we'd run-over dead on the ground. But there was nothing either of us could do.
So many things happened afterward, it was a blur - meeting the Munchkin tribe and the man with no memory whom my sister christened 'Lucas', the dead woman's revival and ultimate permanent death, and of course, finding out Lucas had been wounded. Now we were on a mission to find medicine to save him. If that even existed here. So many times throughout this journey, I sensed my twin's discomfort and longing to get back home. But Kansas had never been "home" to me and I had no desire to ever go back that place. Our mother gave us up.
What part of that didn't Dorothy get? Although one thing about Kansas I would miss was Star Wars, I thought to myself. Dorothy walked up the path behind me then. Her footsteps were loud on the rocky dirt as she helped Lucas to walk. He needed help and fast or he wouldn't make it. My Converse scuffed against the dirt and I sighed.
The heat was brutal and it beat down on my tanned skin. I was probably about to start hallucinating. Suddenly, I saw a house come into view up ahead. I turned back to my sister who was still struggling to move Lucas.
"I see something up ahead. Some sort of house. I'm gonna go check it out!" I told her and she only nodded wearily in response.
My booted footsteps pounded on the rocky earth as I ran closer to the house in the small clearing. It was carved deep into the rock facing and painted a bright blue. Thick trees surrounded the door, hiding it completely from view. But that wasn't what caught my eye. It was the brown-haired boy dressed in a cerulean blue coat. He stood in front of the house with a sword in his hand, hacking at the trees.
The blade flashed silver in the sunlight as he swung it relentlessly. Another boy in the window of the house shouted down to him and I just made out the word "Jack". So that was his name. A very simple name for such a beautiful boy. Almost like it wasn't enough to describe him. Suddenly, the one in the window gave a shout and I glanced behind me to see my sister and Lucas coming up the path.
"Jack! There's someone coming up the path!" he cried out.
Jack whipped around, chocolate-brown curls falling onto his forehead. His gray eyes met mine and I sucked in a breath. Dorothy came up beside me then, panting heavily.
"Excuse me, do you know a woman called-" she started but he ran away from her, his sword swinging at his side.
I bit my lip as he turned back around one last time. My brown eyes connected to his gray ones again before he disappeared behind a hill.
That was the first time I met Jack...
