chapter three:
Holly, Jolly
β
EVELYN ENTRED HER HOUSE after dropping Sabrina off at home to find her mom sitting in the living room watching tv with her cat, Mews by her side.
"How was the party hun?" Her mother questioned as she kept petting her cat. Evelyn placed her car keys in the little bowl that was placed on a small table by the front door. "It was good".
Her mom nodded, she was glad Evelyn was having more fun. She knew how much Will being gone impacted not just Dustin but her oldest daughter as well. "I'm glad you had some fun" she told her daughter.
"Thanks, I'm actually glad I did too. Is Dustin home?" Her mom nodded her head. "He came home about an hour ago, he was looking for you but I told him you were out but he should be in his room" her mom told her.
Evelyn nodded her head before saying goodnight to her mom and departing where her little brother was currently at. She knocked on his door waiting for a response. "Come in" she heard him say out loud.
She opened his door to find Dustin on his bed reading some comic books.
"Hey"
Dustin looked up from his comic to find his sister by his door. "Hey, where you been. I have so much to tell you that you won't even believe it" he told her.
Evelyn lightly smiled at him before sitting next to him on his bed. "Went somewhere with Sabrina but decided to come home early" she told him.
"So what is it that you had to tell me?" She questioned. Dustin smiled, he couldn't wait to tell his sister what happened and what the party had planned.
He told her everything. About how El ( the name the boys call her since she got an eleven number tattooed on her wrist ) could possibly know where Will is at. To her having telekinesis, meaning she can move things with her mind.
At first Evelyn didn't really believe it but she knew her brother wouldn't lie to her especially when it has something to do with Will, so she learned to believed it. She just knew that Dustin had a more crazy day than she did.
β
The next morning, Evelyn dropped Dustin off at Mike's house. "Be careful okay!" She told him as he got his bike out of her trunk. "Don't worry, I will. I promise" Evelyn hugged her little brother before he walked up towards the Wheeler's house.
Evelyn had a weird feeling that something did or was about to happen and she didn't like the feeling at all.
"Hey" she looked up when she heard someone stop next to her. She saw it was Nancy Wheeler. "Hey, what are you still doing here? Usually you're at the school with Barb already? She questioned Nancy.
Nancy played with her strap on her bag. "She didn't show up. Have you seen her before you and Sabrina left by any chance?"
The last time Evelyn saw Barb was when she left her in the bathroom after wrapping her bandage for her. "No, the last time I saw her was in the bathroom. Did she not go home last night?" Even though her and Barb weren't close, it still made Evelyn worried that something could of happened to her.
"She probably did and she probably forgot to pick me up but it's okay" Nancy told her, she knew Evelyn was getting worried. It's what Nancy liked about the girl, she cares deeply for people, being her friend or not.
"Would you like a ride to school? We will just have to pick Sabrina up first but I don't mind giving you a ride" Evelyn asked. "Yea, sure. That would be nice. Thank you Evelyn" Nancy thanked the girl as they both got in her car and started heading towards Sabrina's house.
Through out the whole car ride, it was complete silence. The two girls didn't know what to talk about, Evelyn could of talked about Barb but she can see Nancy was already stressed out as it. They pulled up in front of Sabrina's house where Sabrina was seen sitting on the front step that led to her house.
Sabrina got confused when she saw Nancy sitting in the passenger seat. "What's sunshine doing here?" Sabrina questioned. Nancy looked at Sabrina before looking back at her bag.
"Barb didn't pick her up so I asked if she wanted a ride" Evelyn told her as Sabrina got in the backseat.
"Sabrina, you didn't see Barb leave either did you?" Nancy questioned as she turned around in her seat to look at Sabrina as Evelyn started driving towards the school.
"Nope, the last time I saw her was when you basically forced her to chug a beer and when she went to do it she cut her self" Sabrina told her before smiling sarcastically at Nancy.
Nancy turned around back to look at the road. "Don't mind Sabrina, she's usually this grumpy" Evelyn jokingly told Nancy as Sabrina lightly kicked Evelyn's seat before muttering a whatever under breath.
Evelyn turned into the parking lot of Hawkins, High School and found a parking spot. "You parked next to Steve?" Nancy told her but she saw Steve wasn't in his car like he usually is.
"Yea she does that sometime even though she doesn't notice, it's fate I'm telling you, no offense Nancy" Sabrina told her as she got out of the car.
"Yea, fate" Nancy whispered under breath but lucky nobody heard her. "Ignore her! I believe you and Steve are cute together but enough about that, I do hope Barb is here. Just don't stress out too much okay" Evelyn sincerely told her as she can see how much stressed and worried Nancy is.
"Thank you. I'm going to my locker maybe Barb is waiting for me there. I'll see you around" Nancy smiled at them as she proceeded to walk into the school and to her locker.
Evelyn watched Nancy disappear into the school before looking at Sabrina. "What was that?" Evelyn questioned. "What?" Sabrina was confused on what Evelyn was asking.
"The whole Steve and fate thing. He's dating Nancy, you just don't say that to someone's girlfriend" Evelyn told her lightly annoyed. "I'm sorry if it was the truth" Sabrina told her as they began heading into the high school that was surrounded by students and teachers.
The two linked their arms together, that way they don't lose each other in the crowd. "Sabrina, I get you have this weird fantasy that Steve and I will get together but I'm telling you right now, it's never going to happen. He's with Nancy." Evelyn told her but she knew Sabrina won't stop.
"For now" Sabrina told her as they both started heading towards their first class. Evelyn was in for a long day, she just knows it.
β
Lunch time rolled around, Nancy was walking to where Steve's table was at and passed by Evelyn and Sabrina who sat a couple tables away from them. She smiled at the two before heading towards where Steve was at.
"The golden ' it ' couple" Sabrina stated as she watched Nancy sit next to Steve. Evelyn played with the fork and looked towards where Nancy was at.
"Important question is why is Carols foot on the table like that's disgusting" Evelyn looked away with disgust laced on her face.
Sabrina shrugged her shoulder not really knowing an answer to why Carols foot was on the table. "In other news, no Barb" Evelyn sighed before resting her arms on the table.
"I'm worried. She doesn't ever miss a day of school and she never skips. I feel like she is missing the same way Will went missing" Evelyn told Sabrina.
"Look maybe, she's at home. You know maybe she didn't feel well and decided to just have a rest day or maybe she's at the hospital getting that hand stitched up" Sabrina told Evelyn hoping that will reassure her.
"Yea, Maybe" Evelyn slightly said before looking back at Nancy only to find her gone. The only person she made eye contact with was Steve who slightly waved. Evelyn waved a little before turning back to look at her food. The only thing on her mind was, where is Barb?
β
School finally let out even though some students were staying for the game, Evelyn was not one of those students. Sabrina decided to stay and watch how the game unfolds. She told Evelyn she will find a way home possibly with another friend.
Evelyn got ready to head towards her car but than she saw Jonathan on the ground looking to be picking up pieces of paper and a broken camera.
She was hoping it wasn't the camera Will and his mom got him for his birthday. She knew how much that camera means to him. She walked up to Jonathan to see him put the finale pieces of paper and the broken camera in his bag.
"Jonathan, what happened?" Jonathan got up off the ground and ignored Evelyn as he got his keys out from his pocket before placing his bag in his car.
"Jonathan, come on tell me. What happened?" Evelyn questioned again. "Steve and his goons happened now will you please just let me leave so I can be by myself" Evelyn moved out of the way so Jonathan can get in his car.
She watched him drive away before heading back into the school. She knew Steve will be in there since Sabrina mentioned he will be attending the game. She saw him sitting on the floor in front of the rows of lockers with Nancy standing besides him and Tommy plus Carol sitting across from them on the bench.
"Steve" Evelyn called out. Steve lifted his head off the lockers when he heard his name being called out. Once he saw it was Evelyn, he immediately got up. Nancy took note on how quick he got up.
"Evelyn, hey, I thought you weren't staying for the game?" Steve questioned since he asked Sabrina earlier if Evelyn was going and Sabrina told him no.
"I'm not here for the game. What did you and your little followers do to Jonathan?" Tommy and Carol lightly snickered at the mention of Jonathan.
Evelyn looked at them before rolling her eyes and looking back at Steve. Steve didn't know what to say because he didn't want to tell her the truth because than she will get mad at him, he doesn't want her to get mad at him.
Before he can reply, Carol started telling Evelyn everything. From the photos to breaking Jonathan's camera. Evelyn really couldn't believe half of the stuff Carol was saying, she knew Jonathan loves to photograph but she never knew him as someone who will stalk people and take their photos.
"I get what he did was terrible but you do know you broke the camera that his little brother gave him along with their mom for his birthday? That camera meant everything to him and you just broke it, you could of just told him to not ever do it again. You really are an ass Steve Harrington " was the last thing Evelyn told him before leaving the school.
Steve sighed, he didn't know the camera was from Will but even if he did, it still wouldn't have stopped him. He knew that and Evelyn knew that.
β
Later on that night, Evelyn was in her bedroom reading a book with Queen slightly playing in the background. She didn't notice her door was open until she heard someone calling her name.
"Evelyn" she looked up from her book to see Dustin at her door. She took notice on the dry tears that was on his face. She immediately put her book down and walked right up to Dustin.
"Hey, hunny, what's wrong? What happened?" Evelyn questioned, she hated seeing her brother upset because than it makes her upset.
Dustin hugged his sister tightly afraid that if he lets go, that she won't be there. Evelyn hugged her brother back and gave his head a kiss.
"What's wrong?" Evelyn slightly questioned. She was getting more worried when she felt tears on her shirt, indicating that Dustin was crying.
She moved them away from the door and sat them on the edge of her bed. "They found a body" she heard her brother whisper.
Evelyn felt her heart drop. She was hoping the body didn't belong to Will or Barb. "Who found the body hun?" She softly questioned. Dustin sniffed his nose trying to get the dry tears away. "The police, Evelyn the body belongs to Will... he's dead"
Evelyn felt everything around her go completely silent. She felt her heart drop. Will Byers was officially declared dead as of tonight. She held onto Dustin a little tighter, afraid that if she lets him go than he will be gone.
She couldn't imagine the pain that Joyce and Jonathan are going through. Joyce lost a son. Jonathan lost a brother. The Byers was a officially a family of two instead of three.
