The Vanishing of
Will Byers

EVELYN HENDERSON only had two things on her mind and one of them didn't involve her using the house phone to call the Wheeler's residence to see if her little brother was on his way home yet.

"Hello?" Was the response that Evelyn heard after calling the wheeler's five times. "Hi, Mrs.Wheeler, sorry for calling but I was wondering if Dustin was on his way home yet?" Evelyn questioned while twirling the phone cord that was connected to the wall.

" Yes he is, I just told Mike that everyone needed to go home because it was a school night which by the way did you know that they have been playing for ten hours?" Evelyn was not surprised when Karen told her this.

"Really? I had no idea but if you can will you be able to be Dustin on the phone?" Evelyn questioned hoping that once she hears her little brothers voice on the other line telling her he was on his way home, that she can back to doing what she originally planned to do for her night and that was to study while also blasting out Queen in her bedroom.

"I would but he already left" she heard Mrs.Wheeler tell her. "Okay great, well goodnight Mrs.Wheeler " before she can hear a response back she hung up the phone.

"Mom, Dustin is on his way home now" Evelyn yelled out towards her mom who was watching tv in the living room.

" Okay, can you wait outside for him?" She heard her mom yell out. Evelyn slightly groaned in her head. She didn't mind waiting for her brother but sometimes she will like to just focus on herself for one night.

Evelyn walked out towards the front door and onto the porch, her only source of light was the front porch light. She heard her little brother voice as she saw Will riding past her.

" I'll take your " X- Men " 134 " she heard Will yell out to Dustin. " Hi, Evelyn " Will called out to her as he waved at her.

Evelyn smiled and waved back at the young boy. " Hi Will. Get home safe " she told him. Will only nodded his head as he continued his way home. She saw her little brother stop his bike as he was sounding out of breath.

"Man" Dustin huffed out as he got off his bike and headed towards the front door where his sister stood waiting for him.

"What was that about?" Evelyn asked him as she watched him put his bike on the side of the house by the front door.

"I challenged Will to a race back to my house in exchange to whoever wins gets to pick their own comic from whoever loses and as you can tell I lost" Dustin told her, still a little bummed that he was giving up his favorite comic, the comic that his sister bought him for his birthday.

Evelyn put her arm around her little brother and pulled him into a little side hug as they continued their way to the front door. "How about this, tomorrow you give Will the comic book and than after school I'll take you to get the same comic book that way it will be like you never gave it up." She told him.

Dustin smiled up at his sister, showing her that he liked that idea. "That sounds amazing especially since it's coming from you" he told her. Evelyn squeezed his shoulders and gave him a little kiss on his head.

" Than it's settled. But for now let's get you ready for bed. Still can't believe you played for ten hours." She told him. Dustin sighed.

" Look we didn't know it will take us ten hours to play " he told her. Evelyn laughed as they walked back into their home.

Little did they know that a couple streets down will make it the last time anyone has saw or even heard from Will Byers.

The next morning, Evelyn and Dustin were both seated at the kitchen table eating the breakfast their mom always made them before they left for school.

The telephone rang interrupting the conversation between the siblings. " I got it " Evelyn told her mom as she got up from her seat and towards the phone.

"Hello?" Evelyn answered. "Evelyn, it's Joyce. Jonathan and Will's mom " Evelyn heard on the phone. She smiled once she heard it was Joyce on the line.

"Hi, Joyce! How are you?" She asked her. "I'm doing good but um...I was wondering is Will there?" Joyce questioned the teenage girl. Evelyn shook her head even though she knew Joyce couldn't see it.

"No, the last time I saw him was last night when he was heading home. Why? Did he not come home?" Evelyn started getting worried, Will was like another little brother to her so knowing that something could of happened to him did not settle well with her.

"He probably just left early for school. Thank you Evelyn, but if you do see him please tell him to come home right away" Joyce told her.

"Of course! Hope you find him Joyce" she told her."Thank you Evelyn" was the last thing the teenage girl heard before she heard the dial tone indicating that the phone call has ended.

Evelyn hung the phone back on the wall before proceeding back to the kitchen table. "Who was it hunny?" Her mother questioned. "Just Joyce, she was just checking in that's all" Evelyn told her mom, she didn't want to tell her mom the real reason why Joyce Byers called because she knew that her mom will ask Dustin about it and than Dustin will be worried and Evelyn dose not like when her little brother gets worried or stressed out.

"Are you ready to leave Dustin? I have to pick up Sabrina on the way" Evelyn questioned her little brother who was still eating his breakfast.

"You can go ahead, I'm meeting up with Mike, Lucas and Will" he told her. Just the mention of Will's name makes Evelyn more worried than she already was.

"Okay, just be careful and I'll see you later" she told him before giving him and her mom a kiss goodbye on the cheek. "Don't forget, book store later on today" Dustin announced towards her before she can walk away.

"Don't worry! I could never forget! Love you" was the last thing Evelyn said before walking out the front door and into her car to get Sabrina.

But the only thing that still lingered in her head was if Will was okay and is safe.

Hawkins, High School parking lot was filled with students and teachers plus their parked cars and the parked school buses.

Evelyn pulled up to the next available parking space which just happened to be next to Steve Harrington.
"Oh look Evelyn, it's your boyfriend " Sabrina Bensen , Evelyn best friend since the third grade told her.

Evelyn rolled her eyes at her best friend comment.
Sabrina always fully believed that along the line her best friend and Steve will get together.

"You do know he is dating Nancy right?" Evelyn questioned Sabrina as she pulls the keys out of the ignition. Sabrina looked at Evelyn with shocked written all over her face.

"Wait are you serious?" Evelyn nodded her head. Sabrina let out a laugh before getting out of the car with Evelyn following behind.

"Harrington!" She heard Sabrina call out. Steve looked away from Tommy and Carol. "What do you want Bensen?" He questioned, clearly not in the mood to talk to her.

"Is it true you are dating Nancy Wheeler? or is that just some lie you made up because you still crushing on Evelyn?" Evelyn walked away from the conversation that Sabrina was having not noticing the longing look that Steve was sending her way.

While entering the busy hallway full of students, Evelyn noticed Nancy at her locker next to Barbara Holland, they both looked to be in a deep conversation so instead of joining them she decided to walk to her locker, which also happened to be next Steve Harrington. Luckily, Steve was still outside with Tommy , Carol and Sabrina.

She opened her locker after putting in her combination and started taking out her books for her next classes. "You and your love for Queen" she heard someone say to her as they got their locker opened.

Evelyn sighed knowing exactly who it was that was talking to her, she looked to her left to find Steve putting his things in his locker while also looking at her.

" I'm surprised you actually use your locker, knowing you barley bring anything to class." She told him.

"Well I just had to put my book back before I head somewhere and I also decided to visit my favorite person since she casually just walked away without saying hi to me just a couple minutes ago" Steve told her as he closed his locker and leaned on it showing that his full attention was on Evelyn and nobody else, well until he visited Nancy but she could wait just a couple more minutes.

"Well you tell Nancy I said hi" she told him as she closed her locker and walked off to class.

"I wasn't talking about Nancy" Steve whispered to himself knowing that Evelyn couldn't hear him as he watched her disappear into the next hallway. He sighed before fixing up his hair and heading to the girls bathroom where hopefully Nancy will be.

After School, all Sabrina has been talking about through out the ride home was Steve and Nancy. "I mean I'm really surprised they are together" Sabrina told Evelyn as she looked at the window, watching the trees pass by.

"Why?" Evelyn questioned. Evelyn in her opinion thought that Nancy and Steve looked cute together.

"Well because I always thought you and Steve will be cute together " Evelyn looked at Sabrina with disgust laced on her face as she pulled her car into park in front of Sabrina's house.

"You're joking right?" but Evelyn already knew the answer to that. Sabrina was in fact not joking!

"Look I'm just saying, you and Steve will end up together, I mean you guys have been locker buddies since middle school, meanwhile my locker buddy changes every year. I simply call that fate pulling you two into each other" Sabrina stated as she got of the car.

"Whatever, see you tomorrow Sabrina" Evelyn told her as she waved goodbye to her best friend.

Now all Evelyn had to do was find Dustin, so that way she can buy his comic book for him.

Arriving home, Evelyn was relieved to find Dustin's bike parked on the side of the house where he usually parks it. The only person who wasn't home was their mom since she was at work.

After making sure her car was locked, she started heading towards the house, while walking inside she noticed Dustin sitting on the couch in the living room.

"Hey, you okay buddy?" She asked him when she noticed an unsettling look on his face. She put her stuff down on the little table by the door and sat next to her brother.

Dustin didn't answer but just nodded his head. Evelyn looked at him not sure if she wanted to keep asking questions or let it go.

She decided to not ask further question, not because she didn't care but because she didn't want her brother to be mad at her after indicating everything was okay even though she knew everything wasn't okay.

"Did you know that Will is missing?" She heard Dustin ask her.

"How did you find out?" She asked him. Dustin looked at her. "Hopper came to the school and questioned Mike, Lucas and I. He told us he is missing" he told her, remembering the exact words Hopper told him and his friends. But knowing them, they wouldn't listen to him especially when their best friend is in danger.

"Hopper questioned you and the boys without an adult with them?" She asked him. She didn't like that Hopper questioned her brother without her there. Yes, he is the chief of police but finding out he questioned the three boys without an adult in the room didn't sit well with her.

"No, our principle was there. So don't worry besides I think the questioning went really well" he told her. Finding out the principal was in the room during the questioning made her feel a little better.

"But did you know?" Dustin asked her after seeing that she was calmed down a little. Noticing the silence that his sister was giving him, made his question find an answer. His sister knew.

"Yes, I did know " Dustin was about to say something but Evelyn continued before he could. " but I only knew because Joyce called worried sick but she also told me that he probably left for school early." She finished off.

"Well clearly he wasn't at school, can't believe you didn't tell me" Dustin told her. Evelyn shook her head before standing up and grabbing her things.

"I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to stress and be worried plus it wasn't confirmed he was missing until today, so you can be upset with me all you want but I didn't fully know until now " was the last thing Evelyn told Dustin before departing into her room to get some studying done while also listen to Queen.

Queen is the only band that can calm Evelyn down when things turn up for the worst. And things did indeed turn up for the worst. Will Byers was officially declared a missing boy!

Later on that night, Evelyn was still studying, her mom came home from work and Dustin is probably in his room trying to get his mind off of the fact that Will was missing.

Evelyn was about to highlight her latest study until she heard her walkie go off. The same walkie that the party got her for her birthday.

Evelyn put her highlighter down and got up to head towards her desk by her bed that held her walkie.

"Evelyn, it's Dustin! If you get this than please respond back, over!" She heard her brother call out through the walkie.

Evelyn picked up the walkie. "Dustin? It's Evelyn, what's going on? And why are you talking to me through the walkie? Just come in my room, over!" She responded back.

"I'm not home, that's why! Over!" Dustin stated.

"Dustin, it's raining bad out there, where are you and why are you not home? over!" She waited a few minutes for her brother to respond but he never did.

"Dustin Henderson, you better tell me where you are at or I will tell mom that you snuck out" she threatened over the walkie hoping that lie will get her brother talking.

"I'm over at Mike's and we got a code red! I repeat a code red, so please get your butt over here. Over!" Dustin stated. Evelyn was confused yet worried why her brother was at Mike's and why it was a code red.

"Okay, I'm on the way! Over!" Was the last thing Evelyn said into the walkie before grabbing her jacket and keys.

The only thing on her mind was, what did her brother get himself into and why it was a code red but most importantly if they were safe.
