chapter one:
MadMax
โ
"SON OF A BITCH! SON OF BITCH" Dustin Henderson kept muttering out as he kept looking through every section of the house trying to find some money for the arcade. Dustin ran into his living room where his mom was at watching TV and started throwing the couch cushions everywhere.
"Another stupid penny!" Dustin called out as he threw the penny across the room, startling Mews who sat on his moms lap. "Dusty, watch it! You almost hit mews"
Dustin looked away from the couch and towards his mom hoping that if she gets up from the chair she was sitting on than he will find some money, mostly some quarters. "Can I please check under your cushions?"
"Dusty!" His mom called out trying to let him know that she wasn't going to get up just for him to throw more things. "Mom, please? It's an emergency!"
Claudia playfully let an annoyed sigh as she got up from the chair and watched as her son starting rummaging through the cushions while also trying to console Mews who was still startled by the throwing penny.
Dustin felt something underneath the cushion and as he lifted his hand up he found a quarter in his hand. "Great, now only need three more. Do you think Evelyn will notice if i burrow her quarters?" Dustin questioned out to his mom who was sitting back down on the chair.
"Yes, she will. Than she will tell you that it's not nice to take things without asking" Claudia told her son as she tried to advert her attention back to the tv. Dustin sighed, trying to think of ways to get at least three more quarters but than he remembered he hasn't seen his sister since this morning.
"Speaking of Evelyn, where is she? I haven't seen her since this morning when she dropped me off at Mikes?" Dustin questioned out, he noticed how happy his sister has been lately. More happy than usual.
"She's hanging out with that boy, Steve Harrington. Her and Sabrina both are actually before you get any ideas" Claudia told her son. Dustin was confused on why his sister started hanging around Steve Harrington. Last he checked she hated him.
"Steve? The one dating Nancy? Since when does she tolerate him?" Dustin questioned. Claudia sighed before looking at her son. "Since last Christmas. Besides like I said she isn't alone with him. She's with Sabrina as well."
Dustin decided not to ask any more questions regarding her sister hanging out with Steve. "Well, since she's not home, she probably won't notice a few quarters missing. Love you, mom"
"Dustin. Respect your sisters privacy" Claudia tried calling out towards her son but she knew he wasn't going to listen. She heard Dustin open her daughters door and sighed. She heard the front door open and in walked her oldest daughter with Sabrina and Steve right behind her.
"Hi, mom" Evelyn called out towards her mom as she gave her kiss on the cheek. "Hi, hunny" Claudia told her as she adverted her attention towards Sabrina and Steve who sat on the couch but right after fixing the mess Dustin made.
"Hello, Sabrina! Hello, Steve!" Claudia called out to the two young teenagers not realizing her daughter left to go to her room to grab something before they all left to get Nancy.
"Hi, Ms.Henderson" Steve called out as he gave her a small smile. Before anyone can say anything they heard Evelyn call out to something. Claudia sighed, knowing full well what is about to happen.
โ
Evelyn opened her bedroom door after giving her mom a kiss on the cheek. She opened it to find her little brother going through her things. "Dustin! What the hell are you doing?"
Dustin stopped what he was doing and slowly turned towards his sister who looked irritated to say the least. "Oh hey, Evelyn. What are you doing here? Thought you were out"
Evelyn crossed her arms over her chest before walking towards her brother. "I was but than I forgot something here that I had to give to Nancy before we picked her up. Now what are you doing in my room"
"Looking for three quarters. I only found one and that was in the cushion that mom is sitting at. But don't worry, I was only burrowing the money. I will obviously pay you back" Dustin tried explaining to his sister hoping she won't get mad at him more than she already was.
Evelyn sighed before opening her closet door and taking out a small jar that had money it. The money she saved up from working at the arcade for a little bit over the summer. "Next time, ask me. Don't just come into my room and mess with my things"
Dustin nodded his head as he watched his sister take out three quarters and hand it to him. "Thank you! Thank you!" Dustin hugged his sister before running of into his room to try and communicate with Lucas, Mike or Will.
Evelyn put the lid back on the small jar and placed it back in the closet before grabbing the next book that Nancy asked to burrow. She walked out of her room the same time as Dustin did. "So why did you need the three quarters?"
Dustin looked up towards his sister after making sure he had everything. "Mike, Lucas, Will and I going to the arcade and I didn't have enough money" Evelyn nodded her head before pulling her little brother into a side hug.
"Be careful okay" Evelyn softly told him as Dustin nodded his head. "I will! Also, since when did you hang out with Steve? I thought you hated him?" Evelyn awkwardly chuckled at Dustin's question.
"I don't hate him, I mean I never did, I just didn't tolerate him. But he's cool now. In fact he's pretty amazing and awesome" Evelyn stuttered out. Dustin looked at his sister with suspicion laced on his face.
Evelyn looked confused on why Dustin was staring at her like that. "Why are you staring at me like that?" Instead of getting an answer she only got a gasp out of him as it looked like he finally realized something.
"You like Steve!" Dustin pointed out a little too loudly. Evelyn automatically tried to shush him by placing her finger towards her lips indicating him to be quiet.
"No, I don't. I mean I do but not in that way" Evelyn tried explaining but she can tell Dustin wasn't believing her. "Look just have fun and be careful. Also, if Keith bothers you guys tonight let me know"
"Okay we will. You have fun with Steve" Dustin smirked at her before he dashed out the front door before Evelyn can say anything but not before saying goodbye to their mom.
Evelyn walked back into the living room where her mom, Sabrina and Steve were at. "He seemed to be in a good mood." Sabrina stated out as she looked towards Evelyn.
"When is ever not in a good mood? Anyways we got to go. Love you, mom!" Evelyn called out as they all left to get Nancy. Evelyn tried not to think that much into what her brother stated out to her.
Did she like Steve? Yes but in a friend type of way. Besides even if she did like him like that, she could never try to hurt Nancy like that. Steve cares about Nancy and Nancy cares for Steve. Evelyn didn't want to ruin that.
โ
Ever since the conversation Evelyn had with Dustin, it made her think even more on her feelings for Steve. She wasn't sure if she actually liked Steve. If it was a platonic likeness or a romantic likeness. Evelyn was snapped out of her thinking when she heard the class bell ringing indicating that first period was over.
Evelyn started grabbing her things from off her desk and started putting it in her bag. As she was putting her book in her bag she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. Evelyn turned around to find Tina , a friend of her and Sabrina, hand her an orange paper.
"Hey, Evelyn! I'm throwing a Halloween party this weekend. Hope too see you there" Tina told her as she walked past her as she continued handing her poster out.
Evelyn looked down at the paper. Tina's Halloween Blast. Come and get sheet faced. "Will most certainly do that" Evelyn whispered sarcastically as she threw the paper in the trash can by the door.
Evelyn walked around the students in the busy hallway and arrived at her locker. Her locker was still at the same place as it was last year and it was still next to Steve Harrington.
"Hey" Evelyn heard someone say to her as she closed her locker. She looked over to her right to find Sabrina leaning on the locker with Tina's paper in her hand.
"You going to this?" Sabrina questioned as she waved the paper in front of Evelyn's face. "I might go, still figuring out what to be even though Halloween is legit a couple days away" Evelyn told Sabrina as they began walking towards their next class.
"I thought you were going to as the lady from grease?" Sabrina questioned as she handing the paper to a random student in the hall. "I was but I feel like everyone is going to be dressed up as her and her name is Sandy"
Sabrina held her hand up in defense. "Sorry that I wasn't a big fan of the movie to remember their names" Evelyn lightly laughed at her comment. Her laughed slowly faded out as she watched Steve and Nancy talking in front of Nancy's locker.
Evelyn couldn't help but feel a weird feeling in her stomach when she saw Steve with Nancy. Maybe Dustin was right, maybe Evelyn did have feelings for Steve or else she wouldn't feel the way she's feeling right now watching Steve and Nancy as they walked away from Nancy's locker while holding hands. She wouldn't feel jealous.
โ
Dustin Henderson and Lucas Sinclair stood behind a pickup truck waiting for Max Mayfield, the new student in their class and also known as MadMax, arrive to the arcade.
Lucas had binoculars held up in front of him so he can get a better look at when she arrives just to make sure it's actually her and not someone else. "Still no sign?" Dustin questioned out.
"Jack shit" Lucas told him as he kept looking around the small parking lot. No MadMax in sight. "Oh! Damn it. My mom's gonna murder me and so is Evelyn since I didn't tell her where I was going" Dustin told Lucas as he looked down at his watch.
"So go home. I'll radio if she comes" Lucas suggested since he knew that Evelyn will be upset at Dustin for not telling her where he was. Dustin looked up from his watch as Lucas looked back towards the parking lot.
"Oh yeah, nice try. You just want me out of here so you can make your move" Dustin told Lucas. "Oh, cause you're such a threat" Lucas sarcastically told Dustin.
"That's right!" Dustin stated not knowing that Lucas was actually being sarcastic. "She will not be able to resist these pearls"
"Didn't you say that Evelyn doesn't know where you are at?" Lucas questioned as he tried not to feel uncomfortable by Dustin purring sound after he made that statement about Max not resisting his "pearls"
"Yea, so? Besides I think she's too hung up on her feelings for Steve to notice I'm gone" Dustin told Lucas who only looked confused by what he said.
"Steve? As in Steve Harrington? Since when has she stated liking him?" Lucas questioned since everyone in the party knew Evelyn didn't like Steve or any of his friends.
"I don't know. All I know is they've been getting close with each other since Christmas." Dustin told Lucas remembering what his mom told him last night about Evelyn and Steve plus how they've been hanging around each other a lot.
"I think she likes him" Dustin stated out as he kept looking around the arcade parking lot which still showed no sign of MadMax.
"Evelyn liking Steve? The Steve Harrington? Yea, right. Besides last I checked he was still dating Nancy" Lucas told Dustin. Before they can say anything else the sound of a car got their attention making them completely forget about their recent conversation.
Lucas held the binoculars back up in front of his eyes to get a better look at making sure it was actually Max. The two boys watched as the young girl known as Max is seen arguing with her brother, Billy Hargrove who sat in the driver seat.
"They're arguing. They're arguing." Lucas stated as he kept watching the two siblings fight. "Oh, my god. I see that. I don't even know why you need those. God, you're so stupid" Lucas heard Dustin mutter out but he wasn't paying that much attention since his full attention was on the girl.
The pair watched as Max slammed the passenger door shut and watched as the car drove away. The young girl stuck her middle finger at the car before entering the arcade.
Dustin and Lucas looked at each other before following the young girl to see if she's actually MadMax even though they full on believe she is.
โ
Later that night, Evelyn declined Nancy's offer on going to Barbs house to talk with the parents since her main concern at the moment was her little brother and not knowing where he was at.
Evelyn slightly paced in her bedroom with Sabrina sitting on her bed watching her best friend pace back and fourth.
"Evelyn, sweetie he's probably fine. He's probably over at Lucas's and he just forgot to call home and tell you" Sabrina told her best friend hoping to calm her down but she knew it wasn't working.
"Look, I know my little brother and he will never forget to call home or at least tell me where he was going or where he was at" Evelyn told Sabrina with worriedness laced in her voice and her face.
"He's growing up Evelyn. I'm sure he's fine. If he's not home in the next five minutes than you and I will drive around and knock on everyone's doors until we find him" Sabrina told her.
Before Evelyn can say anything else she heard the front door close indicating someone was home. Evelyn ran out of her room and into the living room to find her little brother putting his jacket down on couch.
"Dustin, oh thank goodness you are okay" Evelyn told him as she pulled him into a hug. Dustin hugged his sister back while also giving Sabrina a little smile from behind Evelyn's back.
Evelyn pulled away from the hug and looked at her brother. "Next time, call home or tell me where you are going before I drop you off in the morning. Been worried sick since you didn't come home right after school."
"I promise it won't happen again. I was just with Lucas since we figured out who MadMax was and she's this really pretty and awesome girl" Dustin told his sister with a smile on his face at the mention of Max.
Evelyn and Sabrina looked towards each other once they saw Dustin smile at the mention of a girl name Max. "Evelyn, I think little Dusty here has a crush" Sabrina stated.
"I think you might be right Sabrina. Come Dustin tell us all about this mysterious Max and why is she called MadMax?" Evelyn told her brother as both her and Sabrina sat down on the couch with Dustin in between them who told them everything they know about Max and why she's called MadMax.
Meanwhile, outside rustling can be heard from inside the Henderson trash can. The same sound Dustin heard before he went inside. Little did Dustin know that it wasn't Mews that he heard but something else.
