Prologue

Sue "Ellis" Jenkins had been running with Dutch Van der Linde and his boys since he had been ten. His father, a coal miner, left him and his mother when he was three years old, then his mother, a common whore from Valentine, left him when he was eight years old for "better opportunities in Saint Denis."
Ellis decided when he was eight years old he need to toughen up. Sue was the name his father had originally given him, a name the boy hated. It got a lot of laughs. So he unofficially changed his name to Ellis and then began stealing from those more fortunate than him.
When he was nine then, Ellis was about to rob a man when he bumped into someone. Mary-Beth Gaskill, a girl his age in a similar situation to him. Mary-Beth never knew her father, and she had only just lost her mother Typhoid, so together they'd rob drunkards and unsuspecting victims.
A year later, after stealing a horse from one of the stables and moving around from town to town, Ellis and Mary-Beth planned to rob four men exiting a Saloon in New Austin. Mary-Beth would plead with the men to help her, claiming her mother was terminally ill and needed a help, while Ellis would rob them from behind.
Ellis did well. With a Cattleman Revolver pointed at their backs just in case things went South, Ellis was able to rob the leader of the group, what appeared to be the leaders second-in-command, an older fella he was, and one of the boys the leader treated like a son, until the last man caught him.
Ellis whacked the man in the groin with the Cattleman Revolver before he and Mary-Beth took off running, making it back to their horse but the four fully grown men were faster.
"What're you gonna do?" Ellis spat at the leaders feet when the two men dragged him from atop of the horse. "Kill a couple of kids just tryna' get by?"
"Don't be silly, kid," the leader chuckled, motioning for the two boys to let him go. "I believe this is yours?" The man held out the Cattleman Revolver Ellis only just realised he had lost in the scuffle with the men. Ellis wearily took it back, pointing it at the men and pulling Mary-Beth behind him protectively.
"I'll give your stuff back, all right? Just let us go."
"What're your names?" The older man asked, looking from the leader to the two other men standing by with their hands on their guns.
"I'm Billy Bonney, this is Leslie Dupont," Ellis lied.
"Well, seeing as we're using our made up names, I'm Melvin," the older man chuckled. "This here is Aidan O'Malley," he motioned to the leader before nodding at the two other men. "Then we have Tacitus Kilgor and Jim Milton. So, let's hear your real names."
"Sue Jenkins," Ellis glared at the men who began laughing. "But people call me Ellis, and this is Mary-Beth Gaskill."
"Now, that's better," said the leader when he was done laughing. "Dutch Van der Linde, at your service, and these fine gentlemen are Hosea Matthews, Arthur Morgan and John Marston."
"P-pleasure," Mary-Beth spoke up nervously from behind Ellis, clutching his right hand tightly.
"So she speaks!" Dutch said sarcastically, raising his hands when Ellis pointed the Cattleman Revolver at him. "Easy now, son, the way your holding that gun will do you more harm than me."
And so Dutch and his gang took the two kids in. Hosea taught Ellis and Mary-Beth how to read and write and do simple math, Arthur and John taught Ellis how to ride a horse, shoot, hunt and survive properly while Dutch taught Ellis how to plan out robberies and scope out places. Ellis ended up killing his first man at the age of thirteen, when Colm O'Driscoll and his boys raided their camp.
Arthur had yet to fully trust Ellis, however when an O'Driscoll was about to put a knife in his chest, Ellis shot the man right between the eyes and killed several more before the O'Driscoll's left and Ellis had realised what he done. The boy was sick for hours, until eventually the contents of his stomach painted the floor.
That night Dutch had lost his lover, Annabelle, a kind hearted woman who had treated Ellis like a son, Judy like how Dutch treated him, and suddenly Ellis no longer felt guilty about killing those O'Driscoll boys, instead he vowed to Dutch to kill every last one of them until he saw Colm with a bullet in his brain, and Dutch had never been more proud of him.
Ellis ended up making a name for himself as "The Ghost of the Wild West" for leaving a bloody massacre behind after every shootout with the O'Driscoll gang. He'd raid their camps during the nights and slit their throats, before torturing the few remaining members in hopes of finding Colm, and he came close once.
Now though it's 1899, and the age of outlaws is slowly dying out. With tempers flaring in camp, Ellis needs to decide whether he has enough honour to die a civilised death, or suffer the heinous crimes he committed.
