" 𝕳ey, Grammy winner".
A wholehearted laugh responds to her greeting, the corners of her lips tipping up as she rests back against the headboard with Ruby curling up by her side.
"Is that my new nickname then?", his voice is soft and a little husky due to the casual amount of drinks he's had in celebration of his win but he's still sober enough to sound absolutely delighted and so pathetically in love that it kind of makes her forget her own name for a second.
"Of course. My boyfriend's a Grammy winner, I'm never shutting up about that".
He giggles under his breath hushing her in a slightly embarrassed daze.
"How are you? How's my little girl? I miss you".
Her mouth stretches into a grin at the thought of the response awaiting him.
"We're both doing well. I had so much fun watching your performance, you were wonderful. Oh, and she finally kicked today".
One of the things that had been bothering her since a few weeks was the exact lack of movement the baby had been showing up until today.
Her worry only escalated when her doctor said that babies usually start kicking around this time.
So she'd somehow convinced herself that it's her fault, that her womb isn't "fun" enough and maybe it's a little too hostile in there and maybe she's going through the worst pregnancy in this entire world.
Harry had only tutted with a chuckle and pressed a kiss to her lips before leaning his head against hers and returning his gaze to the sitcom rerun on the television.
"I'm serious, you asshole!", she'd leant back in offence.
Harry had shook his head with a smile.
"You're going to be okay. I'm sure it's different for everyone".
"But what if there really is a problem?".
He had had the audacity to shrug.
"Then we'll figure it out. Together".
And that had seemingly marked the end of the conversation because her mother had shown up with several shopping bags saying she'd gone ahead and impulsively bought a bunch of baby clothes and toys since it had just been a stressful day and she'd only just realised that Darlene hadn't gone shopping yet!
That was enough to send her internally spriralling again because what kind of a mother doesn't buy baby clothes two months prior to her due date?
Harry knew everything would work out but apparently it had decided to work out when he wasn't there.
"I'm sorry?".
Darlene laughs tucking her hair behind her ear, "She actually kicked today! And while we were watching the Taylor performance! This is a sign. My daughter's a swiftie".
"I think you mean our daughter and no, what? She decided to kick when I'm not even in the fucking country? This is just—no. The universe hates me".
She rolls her eyes.
"It's okay. She'll kick again whenever you're around, it's not just gonna stop now".
"Yeah but—".
"No, nope. You just won your first Grammy, I am not letting you get sad about this".
Harry sighs, "I just wish I'd been there".
"Harry, it's okay".
"No, it's not. It just makes me think of what else I'll miss, y'know? Because she's not even here yet and I'm already letting her down".
The desperate sadness in his voice makes her heart ache because she knows he's trying his best and she also knows that he's right.
They can never be sure that he'll be there for every single milestone.
They can only try.
"Look, I get it. And I'm a little sad too but we can't fuss over this. This is your life and it's always going to be this way. It doesn't matter what you're missing as long as you make it matter when you are here. That you make sure you're here as much as physically possible. I don't resent my dad because he missed important life events, I resent him because he never tried to be there even for the insignificant ones. You being here and being her dad is all that she will ever care about. Trust me".
It's quiet on the other end for a while and for just a moment, she fears she's lost connection.
"Thank you", he whispers after a long moment, almost inaudibly.
Darlene blinks, exhaling with a small smile.
They'll be alright.
