๐•ฏarlene's phone rings catching her attention.

She puts her laptop aside and picks up the phone from the edge of the bed, her brows immediately furrowing at the caller id.

For a second there, she has a silent debate in her head as to whether it'd be wise to answer the call or not.

But she is pretty curious so . . . .

"Hey, dad".

A sigh is heard in reply, "Oh, thank God you picked up".

She fidgets with the hem of her shorts, pursing her lips as she prepares to respond.

"Why wouldn't I?".

"Mia didn't. I left her a few messages as well. Is she okay?".

Rolling her eyes, she leans back on the couch, tucking her arm around herself.

"Yeah, well she didn't hear from you on her birthday. Pretty sure that's why".

A pause.

"I sent her a gift".

Darlene resists the urge to scream at him through the phone.

No one tests her patience more than her father. He always knows just what to say to tick her off, turn her into a screaming monster, irritate her to her very core until she waits for him to leave again and never call back.

It is mindblowing how much patience she lacks when it comes to dealing with her dad.

"The gift didn't give birth to her, just so you know".

Another sigh.

"I didn't call you to argue, Dar".

And there he goes. Playing the victim again, acting like she's the one attacking him.

Doesn't he realise how tiring he is?

"Well then, why don't you get to the point?".

A third sigh.

Did he just call me to sigh the whole fucking time?

"I was hoping we could . . . . have lunch tomorrow".

She sucks in a sharp breath.

It's been more than a year since she's seen him, the last time being at Mia's 18th birthday party.

They didn't see each other on her birthday, mainly because she'd sort of made plans to run away from all the drama at home โ€” which her father was a major part of โ€” and fly out to LA to spend time wandering around with Tom and Nailea before Tom was due to leave for his shoot again.

She did receive a gift though, at her hotel room which she's sure he conned the address of out her mother.

The next time she received a gift from him was on Christmas, no phone calls no texts.

Just a gift package from James Threapleton addressed to her.

She didn't want a gift, she just wanted him to at least pretend to be her father for once.

But that's kind of hard when your father thinks materialistic pleasure is enough to make up for his continuous absence in your life.

He's always been like this.

Even when she was a kid and their parents had divorced, he'd rarely swing by for visits.

She only received gifts from him every year on her birthday and Christmas, seeing him was a pathetically rare occasion โ€” one which as a kid she looked forward to.

But she's not a kid anymore.

"I haven't heard from you since last February. Are you actually serious right now?", she huffs.

"Dar, come on. You're not a child anymore, you could have contacted me if you wanted to".

Oh fun fun, so it's all my fault.

I get it, daddy.

"And where were you when I was a child? Honestly, it's pretty surprising you even want anything to do with me since all year I'm left to wonder if I have another parent at all. If you're going to guilt trip me, don't call me. I'm not here for you to make yourself feel better, I have a very busy life".

A fourth sigh.

Kill me, kill me now.

"Darlene, that wasโ€”I'm sorry, that came out completely wrong. I justโ€”I miss you, okay? I miss you and Mia, which is why I called. If Mia's not free tomorrow that's fine with me. I'll arrange something with her later but . . . . are you? Because I'd love to see you, I know I'm not your favourite person right now but . . . . it's just lunch. Please? For me, honey".

Saying no would be so much better than the alternative.

She already has so much to worry and overthink about, she doesn't want her father adding to her problems.

But she's also tired of the constant back and forth when it comes to her relationship with her dad.

She either wants him permanently out of her life or for him to actually hold himself accountable and try and irritate her . . . . less.

So, it's obvious that she half-heartedly mutters a quiet 'okay' into the phone.

"Perfect! I'll text you the location. Uhm. See you tomorrow, Dar".

"Hmm. See you, dad".
