01. you just listen

LORELAI WARREN was only know as Olivia Valdovinos' best friend. She was nothing else. She just followed her around. That's how she'd found herself hanging out with the T-Birds all the time. The gang was led by Richie, Olivia's twin brother.

The group were going to the drive-in that night. Olivia was driving, and Lorelai was sitting in the passenger seat next to her, while the boys were lying on their seats or hiding in the truck so they wouldn't have to pay for extra tickets. Cynthia was going on her motorcycle. Cynthia was the only girl on the gang - not counting Olivia and Lorelai. Actually, she wasn't really in the gang, even though she could do anything to be considered as a T-Bird.

Olivia parked and banged on the hood of the car to let the boys know they could get out. Lorelai opened her door and got out of the car. As the four boys scrambled out of the trunk and the backseat, Cynthia parked her motorcycle beside them.

"Happy last day of summer, dipsticks!" she yelled.

Olivia started speaking Spanish to Richie but Lorelai understood that she was saying that she hated people in high school and that she wanted to go home. There had been rumors the previous year on the relationship between Olivia and a teacher. Lorelai was the only one who knew about this, the rest were just rumors but people believed them and made them bigger.

      "Lorelai!"

It was Milo, Lorelai's boyfriend. Well, boyfriend... their relationship was complicated. They were supposed to be a couple but she knew she didn't love him like a girlfriend should. In fact, if she had agreed to go out with him, it was only because he was the first boy who preferred her to Olivia.

It might sound selfish and stupid but she wanted to feel like what it was like to have someone liking her, feeling that she was important to someone. She had been the second choice all her life. She wanted to be more than that.

But before the summer, he had started to be more and more insistent, trying to touch her despite her saying no, throwing fits of jealousy whenever she talked to someone else and sometimes talking to her very violently. She couldn't stand it anymore so she took advantage of the holidays to get away. She had gone to summer camp for half the vacation and she had spent the second half working with her brother. She hadn't seen or called him and hoped that this break would have been beneficial for both of them.

"Hey." she told him as he grabbed her by the waist to pull her closer to him.

"I tried to call you all summer but you weren't answering." he told her after quickly kissing her.

"I didn't have much time, I'm sorry." she said softly.

"Yeah, whatever. Are we going to see the movie in my car?" he suggested.

"I came here with Olivia." Lorelai looked at her best friend.

"Come on, we haven't seen each other for two months!" he insisted.

"It's okay, you can go." Olivia smiled at her.

Lorelai forced a smile. She would have liked to stay with Olivia. Milo just arrived and she remembered why she wanted to break up with him.

"See? Come on." he grabbed her hand to take her with him.

No sooner had they gotten into the car than Milo kissed her wildly. That was exactly why she didn't want to follow him in the first place. She knew very well that he didn't want to watch the movie, there was only one thing that interested him.

She put her hands on his chest and pushed him with her usual gentleness.

"Milo, we should talk." she declared.

      "Now?" he sighed.

      "Yes."

She sat straight back in the seat and stared at the screen, pushing the strands of hair that had fallen in front of her face.

"I think we should break up."

      "What?"

"We should break up." she repeated. "It doesn't work. We're too different."

"Bullshit. What's going on? First, I didn't hear from you for two months and now you're dumping me? Who do you think you are?" he shouted.

"Don't yell at me." she said in a lower voice.

"I yell if I want to! Damn!"

      He hit the steering wheel.

"I'm sorry if I hurt you." she closed her eyes. "I just don't think it's a good idea for us to be together. We—"

"But I want us to stay together." he said approaching her.

He put his arms around her and started kissing her neck, pulling her closer. By thightening her too much.

"Stop, you're hurting me." she told him but he wasn't listening. "Milo!"

He kept trying to kiss her despite her trying to pull away from his hold. She gritted her teeth and pushed him away with all her strenght, forcing him to let go of her.

"I said stop!" she exclaimed, opening the car door. "We're over."

She slammed the door and walked towards the food stalls. She took a breath, trying to stop herself before she starts crying. She zipped up her jacket and crossed her arms over her chest. All she wanted at the moment was to find Olivia and go home.

As she was looking around hoping to find her best friend, she bumped into someone.

"Shit, sorry." the person said and Lorelai recognized Cynthia.

The brunette had two hot dogs in her hand and her mouth full. She squinted as she recognized the girl.

"You okay? Did something happen?" she asked.

"Um, yeah, no, I'm fine." Lorelai mixed up her words and ran a hand through her hair to think. "I'm just looking for Olivia. Have you seen her?"

"Not recently, no, I think she's watching the movie but I don't know where."

"Okay, hm, if you see her, can you tell her I'm home?"

      "You're leaving?"

      "Yes, that's better."

"Do you need a ride home?"

"Uh, no, it's okay, I'll just walk. You can stay."

"Nah, that sucks here anyway. Oh, just let me grab one more hot dog!" Cynthia exclaimed.

And that's how Lorelai found herself on the back of Cynthia's bike. She didn't really know why but Cynthia had always been kind and attentive to her and it changed her from people who only approached her to get closer to Olivia.

"Do you really want to go home now?" Cynthia asked her as they drove.

"I don't know. Why?"

"You'll see!"

Cynthia accelerated and Lorelai clung a little tighter to her waist. She parked a few minutes later in front of an old building that looked abandoned.

"What is that?" Lori asked as they got off the bike.

"The place I come to when I need to take my mind off things. Come on!"

Cynthia ran to push open the gate and Lorelai followed her. They walked up the stairs and when Cynthia finally opened the door, they were on the roof. The stars lit up the sky and you could see the whole town from here. Cynthia walked over to sit on the edge of the roof. She turned her head to look at Lorelai who was still standing next to the door.

"You coming?"

Lori walked towards her and sat. Cynthia was still staring at her.

"Why are you always so silent, Lorelai?" she asked after a while.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you're smart. I'm sure you got a lot of interesting stuff to say. Yet you always let others speak. You just listen. Why?"

"I don't know." she had an embarassed smile. "It's just that usually people don't care if I talk or not."

"Well, for what it matters, you can talk to me."

Cynthia looked back at the stars and there was a silence for a few seconds. Lorelai thought about what she just told her.

"I broke up with Milo earlier." she spoke, and that was the first time she said something without anyone asking her to.

"That's great. He wasn't good for you." Cynthia replied.

"How would you know?"

"It's obvious. He's kind of dumb. And he always acted like he wanted to control you."

Lorelai didn't reply. She didn't know. It was right that Milo was sometimes controlling but it was her first relationship so she just assumed it was a common thing.

Cynthia drove her home over an hour later. They had talked for a long time and it made Lori feel good. She had never had a real discussion with anyone other than Olivia or her neighbor Luca before. No one else was interested in her.

"Thanks for the ride. And for making this night less shitty than it was at the start." Lorelai said as she got off the bike.

"Anytime. I'll see you at school tomorrow." Cynthia smiled.

"Yes. Good night."

"Good night."
