NEVER ONCE IN A MILLON YEARS WOULD MIKAYLA RHEE thought the world was going to end. Well, not while she was still around, that's for sure. Nor would she imagine that an outbreak of flesh eating monsters would be the cause of it. No one actually knew how this outbreak started, what it was, or if there was even a cure for it.
Who decides when the world was gonna end? Who gets to decides who lives or who dies? There was so many unanswered questions that won't be answer anytime soon.
A year ago, if you someone had told her that from a year, that the dead would be roaming around, she would've called you crazy, insane even. But here she was, two months since everything went to shit, two months since being in that traffic jam.
Two months of trying to survive. Trying to survive with a group of people they had met on the very same highway. But after a while, it felt, like natural sectional to Mikayla Rhee, survival of the fitness.
A hand being placed on her shoulder snapped her out of her thoughts, the thirty something year old women, sent her a comforting smile, "they'll come back," she told her.
The brunette slowly nodded as she gnawd on her lips, reaching for a bucket. "I'm gonna go run down to the quarry and get some water," Mikayla said bluntly, her eyes still centred on the quarry just below them.
Lori nodded and sighed, rubbing her arms, "alright. Just bring Four and try and get Alex to come with. She's been really quiet lately."
Over the past two months, Mikayla has gotta close to the older woman. Lori, radiated warmth and gave off a loving presence, making her feel safe โ Lori had become a mother figure to the younger Rhee.
Mikayla nodded, running a hand through her hair, "okay."
The brunette sighed as she wonder through the camp site until she stumbled upon the dirty brunette, "I'm heading down to the quarry," she announced, fiddling with the handle, "Lori told me to take you."
Four nodded, grabbing his gun and shoving it in his back pocket before slowly making his way past her. Their shoulders brush past as he did so, Mikayla let out a sigh that she didn't know she was holding in before glance over at the other teenager.
"I'm going down to the quarry," Mikayla stated as the blonde's eyebrows furrowed together, "wanna come?"
Alex shrugged her shoulders, placing down her book before wondering over towards the raven haired girl.
"So," Mikayla started, leaning closer towards the blonde, "how have you been?"
The blonde shrugged her shoulders, "dunno how to answer that."
"Honestly."
The blonde glanced over towards the small camp, her eyes scanned the around before letting out a sigh, "my dad has been acting weird since the start of this. It's strange."
"Everything's different now," Mikayla reassured to which the blonde just gave a shrug in response.
Mikayla couldn't help but spare a glance over at the dirty brunette, her eyes traveled down his body and gulped. Something about him made her feel some sort of way.
"So," Mikayla voiced as the two teenagers slowly come up behind the dirty brunette, "I've been meaning to ask," Four glanced over at the raven haired girl behind him, "what kind of name is Four?" She questioned, "we're one through three taken?"
Alex's eyes widen at the words and covering her mouth with her hand to muffle a small laugh threatening to escape.
"Are you kidding?"
Mikayla furrowed her eyebrows, "excuse me?"
"What makes you think you can talk to me?" He asked, bluntly. His dark eyes stared into her light brown ones, Mikayla's pressed her lips together.
"Might be because you're so approachable."
Alex's eyes widen as a gasped escaped her lips, she quickly tried to cover it by a cough but soon enough Mikayla was the one to broke away from his stare, looking right in front of her, she could feel his eyes glaring a hole on the side of her head.
"Careful, princess," he mumbled.
"What's his issue?" The blonde questioned, her stare not leaving Four's back. Mikayla's eyebrows knitted together in confusion. The younger Rhee shrugged her shoulders as Four adjusted the gun on his shoulder, Mikayla released a breath she didn't know she was holding in as she watched him walk ahead of the them.
Either of the two teenagers held a conversation with the guy before. Alex usually kept her distance from Four which was weird considering how close he was to Shane as they both come together with the Grimes Family. While Mikayla had mainly stayed by Glenn's side or Lori's.
And Four kept to himself, mostly talking to Shane and the Grimes family. Never once did Mikayla see Alex or Four in a conversation usually just standing a couple meters from each other in that family group.
Mikayla remembered the first time she met them. On the highway, two months ago.
The younger Rhee's eye traveled over his figure as he moved past the two teen girls, her eyebrows knitted together as she glanced over at the part of his tattoo that peaked out through the top of his shirt.
Alex cleared her throat, "well, you could cut the tension with a knife."
The younger Rhee nodded, nervously swung the bucket around in the air. Her brown eyes glanced around the forest, she took in how silent it was compared to two months ago, the chaos on the highway and the fear of not knowing what was going on.
But thankfully they met Lori and Shane.
