𝑩𝑨𝑪𝑲𝑺𝑻𝑶𝑹𝒀. — elvira was born to dahlia and mikael friis, a well known and well respected family in fjerda. they were well off and basically picture perfect. they followed the customs and traditions of fjerda to perfection and of course their only daughter followed along in perfect order. elvira was raised to be obedient and sweet, to never talk out of turn and always do everything with a smile. the thing was, before she was even born she had a role to fill out. a destiny to live. she was to be a perfect fjerda woman of high class and standards, one who would find a noble husband and live out her days as a devoted wife and mother. that was just the way that it was, the way that her father had decided for her.

as she grew older, she quickly learned that being an intelligent woman was a dangerous thing. she was curious and so incredibly bright but every time she showcased this it would only end to her own  suffering. mikael friis was incredibly temperamental, he liked his family to look and act the best and when that didn't happen he would raise hell. which was why he forbid elvira from speaking out of turn or reading. little things like that they he claimed tampered her brain. who was elvira to question him though? i mean he was her father. dahlia on the other hand was too frightened of her husband to ever stand up for her daughter. she did the best she could though, sneaking her books and teaching her as much as she could.

she was around seven when strange things began to happen, things like flames appearing from seemingly nowhere or singes appearing on her clothes. dahlia knew the sad truth, her daughter was a grisha but elvira was still her daughter so the mother kept the girls secret. pretending as if it didn't exist and constantly making excuses for her. she knew that life was already hard enough for elvira and her spirited behavior and she would hate to make her child's life miserable. she adored her and despite the fact that she couldn't stop the abuse from her father, that didn't mean she didn't care for her daughter.

the brainwashing started to sink in as the girl grew older, mainly because of what she suffered from her father. every time she spoke up or acted out she faced consequences, either physical or mental. perhaps the worse was the time when she told her father she didn't wish to marry, he had struck her so hard that his ring was basically imprinted on her cheek. then he locked her in a small closet until she took back what she said. it was enough for any little girl to give into the role she was given.

still, even though she had given into the brainwashing things went horribly wrong. the night after her twelfth birthday, everything had been perfect. her mother had been overjoyed and her father was finally pleased and her perfectly prim behavior that she displayed at her birthday ball. everything had changed in a blink of an eye, while the girl peacefully slept she had no way of knowing that her happiness had allowed her to loose control of her flames. before anyone knew it the friis manor was burnt to the ground in mere minutes. leaving behind a burning rubble and the unharmed blazing body of elvira friis. it didn't take long for the villagers to catch onto what had happened, the perfect girl was grisha. an evil witch who had just slaughtered her family in cold blood.

she was woken up by an angry mob full of torches and  weapons, scared and confused her flames had calmed but had not yet given up. not even waiting for the drüskelle to show up the enraged people took matters into their own hands, forcing the little girl up and carefully chaining her up despite the flames. they claimed that the only way to put out the fire within her was to drown out the evil in the icy sea. elvira didn't even have time to process what had happened before she was being thrown into the unforgiving waters of the fjerda sea, all she could remember was the way her flames flickered before she lost consciousness.

by some saints miracle she was picked by a kerch trading ship and managed to sneak along the cargo until she arrived to the small island. frightened, terrified and on the brink of death she took up the art of pic pocketing and stealing in order to survive. she put her past behind her and finally embraced the brains she was gifted with, it was hard but she managed.

FIRST MEETING .—elvira met nikolai when the two were both around sixteen. the teen had taken an apprentice with a shipwright, one that elvira was coincidentally working with. after spending some time in kerch the young girl had taken different means to getting food. ones less dangerous and more helpful to making a living, aka working aboard a kerch ship where she found she was extremely talented in cartography. of course, the two had to spend time together since they were both on the ship for a good while. well... they didn't have too but nikolai was more than happy to have someone his age on board so he simply would not leave her alone. much to elvira's dismay.

the fact of the matter was that she had not made many friends in kerch and she also didn't have many in her past life. not to mention she wasn't exactly the biggest fan of guys, she envied them because of how easy life seemed to come to them. therefore, she gave the blonde the cold shoulder. only meeting his friendliness with sarcasm and short responses.  still, despite it all nikolai did not falter or back down. she intrigued him and even though she didn't feel the same he considered her a friend. 

when nikolai went on to become sturmhond and was searching for a crew he offered elvira a position. he didn't exactly know what her backstory was but he promised her protection and a life full of adventure. elvira accepted, deep down she knew her current life would get her nowhere. probably dead at 25. besides, she was living life as a ghost, as a girl who was thought to be dead by her homeland and the world.

HEADCANNONS. —

❤︎ nikolai leaves notes on elvira's work, most of the time either hearts or pick up lines. elvira will never admit it but said notes never fail to make her smile even if she rolls her eyes at first.

❤︎ elvira is constantly shutting down nikolai's advances at flirting, attempting to humble him but he always bounces back. however, despite his big ego she can manage to make him at a loss for words when she flirts with him. it amuses her to see it combined with his rosy cheeks. 

❤︎reluctantly ( before the two were officially together ) she would allow nikolai to pretend to be with her in order to either gets girls jealous or to get girls to back off... or just for the fun of it

❤︎elvira can't cook but even so when she does attempt nikolai is the only one to humor her and assure her that is good because he likes the fact that she tries for him. in reality, he is the good cook out of the two of them.

❤︎a bunch of men always scoff or question why nikolai's right hand man is a woman, most say that the only reason for this is because she's 'his bitch'. when this happens nikolai simply smirks to himself and watches as elvira takes care of it, telling them 'ooh you are going to regret that'. despite, the fact that he hates how people's mindsets are and would love to give them a piece of his mind... he knows she dosen't need a man to fight her battles for her and respects that.

❤︎ when nikolai had his little crush on alina it was obvious that elvira was jealous. though she constantly denied it and argued that she was just disgusted about him getting it on with a girl who obviously was in a situationship.

❤︎nikolai is the only one who knows how terrified of the ocean she is, and most nights when she got nightmares aboard the ship he would come in and lay with her until she fell asleep. it happened once because their rooms were so close together, he heard her muffled sobs through the door and let himself in. he understands because he has nightmares of his time in the army. they both don't speak of this, it's their own little tramuatic bond.
