help
It was late at night, the stars taking over the sky once again and you were walking with Ao'nung along the seawall, balancing yourself on the thinner rock of each pool. The both of you were talking about your days in your respective training.
"Your mother scared me today, she told me I had to help with your unborn sibling's birth. She didn't specify it was for the ceremony after, and I thought I had to help with the actual birth," you say, recalling the nerve racking moment with Ronal, "it wasn't even your mom, it was Neteyam's mom too. Mothers are scary."
"I could make a joke right now," Ao'nung says, pausing where he stood.
"Oh, please don't. I know what you're thinking about, don't," you say, smacking his arm once in annoyance.
"I'm just saying, you set it up perfectly for me."
"Haha, whatever. Tell me about your day," Ao'nung thought hard about your words, wondering what he should tell you.
"I went hunting outside the reef, near Three Brother's Rock," he says.
"Did you go with your dad? Or mine? Or any older hunter or your stupid friends," you ask with worry, sure Ao'nung was almost considered an adult but it doesn't mean he should go past the reef alone.
"I went with my friends, don't worry," he replies.
"Okay, good. You didn't go to the Cove of the Ancestors?" you ask.
"Had training with my dad before I went hunting. They must have left before I finished training."
"I thought you would say you didn't go because who would want to hang out with those losers."
"Neteyam is with them, he isn't a loser."
"You're right," you nod to his words, "but neither are the rest of the Sullys that went."
"Lo'ak didn't go with them, I bet he's with Payakan," Ao'nung comments, your steps stop.
"Lo'ak knows Payakan? When was this?"
"Oh, you missed it. I don't know where you were this morning but we were all talking by the rocks and Lo'ak told us Payakan saved him from an akula," he says, recalling the group conversation from earlier that day.
"But it's Payakan... he doesn't save na'vi," you say confused and Ao'nung shrugs.
"That's what we told him, he ran away and of course Tsireya chased after him," he rolls his eyes.
"Be nice, I like Tsireya and Lo'ak."
"I have more competition?"
"Not like that, skxawng," this time you shove his head, making him rock back and forth a bit.
All of a sudden you hear a bunch of yelling, and you mentally sigh. More trouble? Both Ao'nung and you look around and see the group that went to the Cove of Ancestors screaming for help in the direction of the village. You look at Ao'nung with concern, speed walking toward the village to see what was up, Ao'nung trailing after you.
Spotting Neteyam kneeling on the ground, hunched over someone, you put a hand on his shoulder, "what's going on?"
"Kiri. Something happened and now she won't wake up," Neteyam says with a panicked voice.
You felt your insides drop again, feeling scared for the na'vi you had a friendship with and worry for both Kiri and Neteyam. Neteyam was desperately holding on to his sister's body, keeping her warm with his body heat and rubbing his hands over her arms to create warmth.
"It's going to be okay, she'll wake up," you softly say to Neteyam, dropping beside him and curling up to sit beside him as a way to comfort him, not wanting to invade his space while he was caring for his sister.
You make eye contact with Ao'nung, hoping he would get the message to comfort Neteyam with you. Instead he turns away.
"I'll tell my mother and father," he says, taking a deep breath. You watch him walk away, putting a hand on Neteyam's back to rub circles to hopefully calm his stressed state.
Not even a moment passes when you see Tuk, Tsireya, and Rotxo walking quickly toward the three of you with Jake and Neytiri, Tuk dragging her father by the hand to desperately bring him faster.
"Kiri!" Neytiri yelps with a gasp, rushing over to take her daughter from her son's arms, cradling her in her lap.
"Oh no," Jake lets out a heavy sign, face filled with worry and you can tell he was stressed. You watched as Jake put a hand to Kiri's chest, his face tilted to the side as he put his face near her mouth, "ok, she's breathing."
"Ma Jake, we have to do something," Neytiri says in desperation.
"I'll call Norm and Max, get them here as soon as possible," Jake says, quickly walking off to their marui pod to call his friends through the comms he kept away.
Neytiri quickly follows him, holding Kiri bridal style, whispering prayers to Eywa. Tuk followed her mother, keeping a hand on Kiri's leg. That left you, Neteyam, Tsireya, and Rotxo. You felt like you should've followed them as well, making sure Kiri stayed well until whoever Jake called arrived, and joined Neytiri in her prayers. Anxiety started to nip at you again, you brought a finger to your mouth and nipped at your fingertip, contemplating what to do.
The four of you stood in silence, the waves seemed to crash as hard as the beating as your heart. Lo'ak finally arrived, and looked between everyone with confused faces and asked what was going on. When he was caught up, he immediately walked to their marui pod, the rest of you looking between each other and following him.
What you saw is what you expected, Kiri was laying in the middle of their marui pod, looking peaceful despite all the chaos that surrounded her current state. Neytiri and Tuk were sitting close to Kiri, Tuk holding as much as her sister's hand she could hold, Neytiri in a crouched position, whispering.
Tsireya soon left to grab her mother, it made you wonder where Ao'nung went off to. You, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Rotxo stayed at the side entrance of the marui pod, to allow anyone who was running in and out easy access. None of you said anything and watched the scene in front of you. Eventually, you gave in to your desire to help and walked into the marui pod, crouching beside Tuk to pray with Neytiri. You felt Tuk's body lean against yours as you whispered.
You don't know how long everyone stayed awake, but soon you heard Jake call out to everyone, "they're here. Neteyam, help me."
You look up and see Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Rotxo dash off to follow Jake. You stayed where you were, continuing to pray with Neytiri, telling Tuk a way she could pray as well.
Not much time passed before you see a new forest na'vi with odd features like Lo'ak and Kiri, and a sky person. You looked at them with questionable looks, both Neytiri and Tuk backed off but you stayed in your spot beside Kiri.
"(Y/n), let's rest for a second," Neytiri gently says to you, holding on to your elbow to guide you up.
You got up and walked to the side entrance where Neteyam, Lo'ak, Ao'nung, and Rotxo all stood, joining them in observing Jake's friends put all these weird things on to Kiri. They had put these gray coloured vines on her face and around her head, they had a device out that displayed something, and a machine that they connected to Kiri. But not connected with her queue, and connected it to her in her arm.
"Who are they?" you ask, looking toward Neteyam who was beside you, Ao'nung on your other side.
"The other na'vi is Norm, the other guy is Max. They're scientists so they should know what happened to Kiri," Neteyam says, leaning back on the rope.
You look at Ao'nung and Rotxo with confusion, Ao'nung shrugs.
"What's a scientist?" you ask, trying out the foreign word on your tongue.
"Oh, they study how life works within na'vi and Eywa," Neteyam answers, unsure what to say exactly as he never really had to explain what a scientist was to someone. After that you tuned into what they were talking about, not knowing exactly what they were saying as it was in English.
"There's no bleed, there's no fracture. No effects of Hypoxia. Brain looks good," the sky person says.
You look at Neteyam again, "what is he saying? Is it good? Is Kiri okay?"
All he could give you was a shrug. The beeping of one of the machines was too loud.
"But there is activity in the frontal lobe. She definitely had a seizure, we can rule out toxins" the sky person continues to talk, and your confusion rises.
Tsireya then joins you guys, standing beside Lo'ak. That's when you notice Ronal entering the marui pod, looking as confused at all the equipment as you did.
"I see that I am not needed here," she says, starting to walk away.
"You are Tsahik. Help my Kiri," Neytiri asks softly, grabbing on to Ronal's arm.
"Remove these things," Ronal demands.
"Out! You have done nothing!" Neytiri says in english.
"C'mon, let's take a break."
"Hold on, I have to take her IV out," the na'vi one said, taking the connection out of Kiri. The both of them and Jake quickly move everything of theirs to the outside of the marui pod by the main entrance.
"(Y/n), come," Ronal calls for you, you move quickly to the side of Kiri she was not at. You notice Tuk crawl up beside you, and you look at Ronal who nodded at you, allowing Tuk to help out.
Ronal dipped a needle she took out from the shell basket she brought and dipped it into paste.
"Tuktirey," Ronal gently says, giving the bottle to Tuk to hold on to, as you light up some herbs to produce smoke to purify the air. You walk around the marui with the bowl you had to purify the air and create a screen where you, Ronal, Kiri, Tuk, and Neytiri, would be 'seperated' from the others to be closer to Eywa.
Ronal began to prick Kiri with the needle, going down the girl's stomach while chanting a prayer to Eywa. You join her shortly, bowing at the side of Kiri's body, copying Ronal's chants, and occasionally adding more herbs to allow it to keep on burning.
Help her, our Eywa.
Wake her up Eywa.
Keep her safe Eywa.
Listen to our pleas Eywa.
Eywa herself became your mantra.
You help Ronal bring Kiri to her side, as she blows deep puffs of air into Kiri's back. Then cupping her hands around her mouth, she lets out a deep puff of air into the smoke. She did the same action on Kiri's stomach, releasing one more heap of air into the smoke.
Watching Ronal's actions and assisting her, you almost missed Tuk's voice.
"Kiri! You're awake," Tuk says with pure happiness.
Ronal, looking light headed, you move next to her to help her move off to the side, allowing for the older na'vi to lean on the walls to rest. You pick up the needles and jars that were scattered around, putting everything back into the basket as Neytiri and Jake go over to Kiri.
You try to block out Kiri's cries but can't help but hear Neytiri call Kiri her sweet child.
You take the basket with you as you walk back to where everyone else was waiting. When you get there, Neteyam jumps up from his seat position, same with Lo'ak, Rotxo, and Tsireya, Ao'nung staying seated.
"How is she?" Neteyam asks right away, getting close to you to hold on to your elbow.
"Kiri is awake, she is well, but she is tired. Don't bother her for a bit," you say, you direct the last part toward everyone else. Lo'ak nods his head in understanding.
"I know you said not to bother her, but can we see her?" Rotxo asks.
"You can see her from here, Neytiri and Jake are all over her right now," you say to him, he nods his head as well, looking off to nowhere.
You sigh to get all the tiredness out of you, knowing that all you want is good rest as you had been up for almost two days as the stars had made another appearence. Same with the others who had waited for Kiri to wake up.
"I think we all need to rest," Ao'nung says getting up, looking at everyone. You nod your head in agreement.
"Well, we can't rest yet. The pod is busy," Lo'ak says.
"We should get food then, I haven't eaten in a bit," you say, waiting for some fish in your stomach.
"Yeah, let's bring some food back for Kiri too. And someone get Tuk," Neteyam says, heading out.
"I'll get her," Tsireya calls out, going outside and bringing Tuk out after a bit.
So the whole group of you went to the communal dinner area, looking for leftover fish to grill and eat. A satisfying way to end the events of the past few days.
