25) Always

Sylvie entered the elevator, hesitant. Her sword was up, not moving it's point away from "He Who Remains". She was going to kill him. She hated this happy attitude he had. He shouldn't be happy after ruining so many people's lives, especially hers.

"Not what you were expecting hmm?"

The man bit into his apple again.

"You're just a man." Sylvie said.

"Yup. Flesh and Blood. Don't tell me I'm a disappointment."

"No. Just easier to kill."

Sylvie slashed her sword at the man and he disappeared. Sylvie was stunned for a moment, then she turned around and saw him sitting in the back of the elevator calmly, still eating his apple.

He started chuckling and Sylvie let out a grunt as she swung her sword down at the seat.

He only disappeared again, reappearing on the other side of the cart.

Sylvie swung her sword and he disappeared, this time not reappearing.

God she hated magicians.

The elevator beeped and she looked up, seeing a green light on the top which she assumed meant she'd reached the correct floor or something.

The door slid open and the man stood there with an amused grin and his apple in hand.

Sylvie gave a glare to him.

"Come on in."

He walked towards his desk in the back of the room and Sylvie slowly stalked in.

Bookshelves lined each side of the room and there was a large window on the back room, showing a long, white, magical looking strand of something. Sylvie's first thought was that it was the timeline, since it reminded her of how the televisions at the TVA had white lines on their screens and it became red whenever a branch was approaching.

Sylvie held her sword firmly, watching as He Who Remains poured what appeared to be coffee, maybe tea, into a glass for himself.

"One.."

Sylvie noticed a fireplace in the middle of the left bookshelf, which had a steady fire in it.

"Two.."

He Who Remains mumbled to himself before he stood up straight and looked at Sylvie.

"Please, take a seat."

He set the pouring pot on the desk and walked around, sitting in what seemed to be a much more comfortable chair than the one he provided for Sylvie.

There were three chairs on the side of the desk and once again, Sylvie was reminded of Wanda and Loki.

She pictured them with her, encouraging her and giving equally threatening looks to this man.

Sylvie remained standing, holding her sword at the point to him, not lowering it after the few stunts he pulled in the elevator.

He set down a glass of coffee on the desk.

"For you, Loki." He offered.

Sylvie gritted her teeth, but decided not to correct him cause he would probably say some shit like 'oH wELl I aCtUaLlY dEcIdE'.

"And some sugar of course." He added.

Sylvie slowly moved, her sword still up.

He Who Remains looked up from the glass he began pouring for himself, and chuckled.

She sat down in the middle chair, her sword slowly lowering until it was just above her lap, ready to strike him once more if need be.

"We can't kill them all."

"I don't know, I personally like that idea."

"Wanda's right, Loki."

"Isn't she always?"

"Yeah I usually am."

Wanda had her hands on her hips as she stood in Ravonna's office. Loki was standing at most a foot away from her, crossing his arms. Mobius was across the room, searching through the history files on Ravonna's Tempad.

"I bet Sylvie would be on my side." Loki scoffed.

"Yeah, which is why she went to kill the person behind this and not us."

"Got it!" Mobius interrupted.

The two turned to him and saw him cast a time door.

"I'll go in. I think she'll like me more than the both of you." Mobius said, walking through.

Wanda nodded and watched him disappear.

"If B-15 was actually pruned, I say we kill everyone." Loki nodded.

Wanda just rolled her eyes.

Mobius walked through the Time Door and saw B-15 sitting, her eyes closed, making her look like she'd accepted her fate.

"Hey, B-15." Mobius said, lightly knocking on the transparent wall that kept her in.

"Mobius?" B-15 asked, opening her eyes.

"Hia." Mobius gave a grin.

"How-? I thought you got pruned."

"I did."

"Oh. Fair enough then."

"Yeah. Long story. A lot of Lokis, would not recommend."

"Where's Renslayer?"

"Also pruned. I got her Tempad so she's not getting back out."

Mobius clicked a button on the Tempad and the cell wall opened up. B-15 got out and stretched her arms a bit.

"And the other variant? Uh, Sylvie. I kind of blew my position for her, it'd be a shame if she died." B-15 said, crossing her arms.

"Yeah. She's at the end of time killing whoever made this place."

"And the other two?"

"On the other side of this doorway."

"Ah."

The two walked through the time door and saw Wanda and Loki in a heated death glare. They glanced back and forth between the two for a moment before B-15 walked over and waved her hand in the small space between their faces.

"She's being unreasonable." Loki scoffed.

"They're innocent variants too! We only prune those who attack us!"

"Exactly! Let's go get them attack us!"

"You're missing the point!"

Mobius rolled his eyes.

"Okay you two, let's go do what we planned. Get files on Renslayer."

Loki scrunched his nose but followed Mobius as he began out of Ravonna's and towards the library.

"Yeah Loki." Wanda said in a childish manner.

"Geez." B-15 rolled her eyes, pushing past them to catch up with Mobius.

"Been a long journey for you, hasn't it? Lot of running, lot of pain. And the other two?" He Who Remains gave a laugh. "You just dragged them along, then you didn't even give them a choice about joining you on this mission to see who I am."

Sylvie glared at the man. She hadn't touched the drink in front of her, she was just listening to his happy attitude and wishing she could cut off his mouth.

"I mean, could you imagine if they were here too? Instead they're off, running around the TVA working out how to change everyone's minds."

"I don't think you understand the situation you're in." Sylvie said, cutting him off.

"Oh?"

"You've lost. I found you and now these other variants are destroying your work."

Sylvie kept her chin high as she spoke, glad that she finally got to say those words. After all this time in running and hiding, it was relieving to know that it was worth it.

"Duh. Of course you did." He Who Remains chuckled again, causing Sylvie's confidence to falter.

She got up and swung her sword at him angrily with a shout.

"Woo!" He laughed as he teleported to sitting on the top of his chair rather than in the lap of his chair. "A swing and a miss."

Sylvie grumbled something unkind under her breath before moving back to the chair but not sitting.

"We're still doing that huh?" He Who Remains asked, hopping down. "Let's get all this out of the way."

He reached down and picked up a file off the ground and set it on his messy desk. He hummed to himself as he flipped through it until he found what he wanted.

"Here we go." He nodded.

He pulled out a sheet of paper and set it on the desk.

"You can't kill me because I already know what's going to happen."

Sylvie looked at the sheet. It was a script. It had all the lines of what he had said, as well as what she'd said about her finding him.

"Magicians and their tricks." She scoffed.

"Okay! Don't you wonder how I'm able to get out of the way just before you kill me?" He asked, taking a step away from the desk.

Sylvie watched him and his movements, not liking how he was acting.

"No. It's because of that little Tempad you have right there." Sylvie said, pointing out the device he had on his hand.

"Right. But how do I already have it loaded up with everything I need to know to keep from being killed by you?" He asked, pointing a finger at Sylvie as he walked back to the desk.

Sylvie wanted to bite his pathetic finger off.

"It's easy. I know it all." He said. "And I've seen it all."

He sat back in his chair.

"Everything you guys did on Proserpina, I saw. All the stuff the TVA didn't know about? I knew. All the scheming. All the talking."

He glanced to the right of Sylvie as if he were looking at someone else, making Sylvie think about Loki and how much he talked compared to her and Wanda.

"Those hand holding moments. Very touching by the way, I'd put that in a movie." He said.

"No." Sylvie replied. "No we broke out of your little game. I broke out of your game. That's how I got here in the first place. That's how we took down you pet out there." She said, gripping her sword as she spoke.

"No. Wrong. Every step you took to get here, Proserpina, the Void. I paved the road." He Who Remains stated. "You, you just walked down it."

Sylvie glanced to the side for a moment, biting the inside of her mouth. No. No this wasn't true. She didn't do all of this just to find out it was set in stone. No. This was a lie.

"Oh! And I have the rest, everything that's uh, going to happen." He Who Remains picked up a box and pulled out some papers, setting them in front of Sylvie. "There's only one way this can go."

"Then why am I here?" Sylvie asked angrily.

"Oh come on, you know you can't get to the end until you've been changed by the journey. This stuff, it needs to happen. To get us both in the right mindset, to finish the quest."

"This is a joke. It's another trick." Sylvie said, trying to get this theory that everything she's done to get here was set up out of her head.

"Funny that your mind would go to that. I think you think of everything as a trick to be honest."

Sylvie gritted her teeth, staring at the man as he continued, clearly not caring.

"I mean you probably thought that whole friendship you had with Wanda and Loki was a trick. You never trusted them, you were just using them to get you here. That's why you didn't let them follow you to here. That's why you pushed them away, isn't it? You don't trust them. You don't trust anyone."

Sylvie didn't reply, she merely glared at the man.

It was 2018 now. Wanda and B-15 stood, hiding behind a wall of lockers. Both had prune sticks on them, just in case, but that wasn't the reason they were here.

"They must be here."

Their presence there had sent off a branch so it was easy to be found.

"Now." B-15 whispered as footsteps approached.

Wanda nodded. Her eyes were shut and red magic flickered around her fingers. Lockers began unlocking and opening around the wall, and B-15 walked out of the hiding place.

All the hunters noticed this.

"They're trying to escape!" One said.

B-15 chuckled before hurrying away from this hall.

"Secure the perimeter, find the witch. I've got her." One of the hunters said.

B-15 ran towards a specific room. She'd already opened it so she wouldn't forget, and she hurried in and slowed down, walking behind a desk.

It was a simple office room, nothing special. A small window behind the desk.

The hunter ran into the room, prune stick at the ready. He stopped as he saw B-15 only a few feet away.

"Stand down B-15." He stated.

"You need to listen to me." She replied, hands slightly up to show she wasn't planning on attack.

"There'll be time for that." The hunter said, moving towards her.

"Just wait." B-15 persisted.

"Why? So your witch can come in and kill me herself?" He asked.

"What the hell is going on in here?"

Both looked towards the second door on the left side of the room.

Renslayer, or Ravonna, walked in. Her hair was a frizzy mess and she wore a simple school dress.

"Judge Renslayer." The Hunter man nodded.

"What? Who are you? And what the hell are you doing in my school?" The woman asked, her tone growing angry.

The Hunter stared at the woman, confused.

"That isn't Judge Renslayer." B-15 said.

"How?"

"We have a lot to talk about."

Wanda remained out, eyes still closed as her magic continued shuting and opening lockers to throw off sound for the remaining hunters.

"What is her plan here?" One asked.

"It won't work. This must just be a distraction. Either way, Hunter D-90 has B-15." Another replied.

"Are we sure these two are the only ones? I thought the witch was pruned? What about Loki? Or Mobius even?"

Wanda opened her eyes and all the lockers slammed shut at the same time.

"What the f-"

Wanda walked out from her spot of hiding and she looked at the hunters, counting four. Her eyes were glowing red and she still had sparks flowing around her fingers.

All four of the hunters got at a ready position, holding their prune sticks up.

"I find it quite rude that you refer to me as 'witch' but everyone else by their names. That doesn't seem fair." Wanda said.

"If you're looking for a fight, why not say it?" One of the hunters asked.

"Because I'm not looking for a fight. I'm giving you a choice. You can either go after your fellow hunter now, or you can try to fight me, fail, and be forcefully sent after the hunter. Your choice." Wanda said, putting on a smile.

The four glanced between one another before simultaneously charging at Wanda.

Wanda raised her hands and red magic shot out, grabbing the four soldiers and freezing them in their run. The sound of a school bell chimed and doors began opening from the surrounding classrooms.

The four soldiers were frozen in place as red magic flowed into their heads. Wanda then released her magic that held them and they all calmly put away their prune sticks. Their eyes were red and Wanda glanced towards the hallway that B-15 and the other hunter ran down.

They nodded in sync and walked that way, soon to also the truth about their beloved TVA.
