CHAPTER FORTY: ONLY LOVE CAN HURT LIKE THIS

Luther looked away from Reginald and pulled himself away from the hug to gaze down at his wife. He suddenly became aware of the fading of his hand. Klaus was lying on the floor as Luther turned to look at him. "Klaus..."
Klaus struggled to hold his powers, but he was losing too much blood. "I can't... hold it." He said faintly.
Luther slowly nodded and looked back at Sloane. "I will love you forever. Okay?" He smiled as Sloane cried and nodded. After Sloane and he told their final goodbyes, Luther eventually vanished and Klaus took his last breath.
After a little period of time, Klaus regained consciousness, however, his wound was still not completely healed. Five lowered his head to the ground and peered into the lobby, where he witnessed the guardian coming back with the cockroaches entering its body. Five stared at Reginald. "The sigil is on the lobby floor. It's the stars!"
"Children, find a star on the sigil. Stand on it!" Reginald instructed in a hurry. "Ben, now's your time, boy! Quickly!"
Sloane simply moved ahead when she noticed a star in front of her as opposed to the other people who were painfully slowly getting up. While looking for a star, Viktor limped. "Seven points, seven of us? We're the bells?" He questioned.
You saw the guardian standing up, but the others were either still seeking the star symbols or were standing on them because of the pain they were feeling. "I'm ending this." You whispered before standing up and ignoring Reginald's protests. "There's no time, Number Eight!"
You made your way to the guardian as Five watched you. "(Y/n), what the hell are you doing?!" He asked out loud and quickly rushed down the stairs.
You stood in front of the guardian as it rose back to its feet. You raised both of your hands and used your powers to prevent the guardian from moving. While they watched you seem to succeed, the others held themselves back from going to the symbols.
While paying attention to the guardian, you paid no attention to the discomfort in your shoulder and chest. You didn't care when the deep red veins started to reappear. You need to save your family. And you will save them.
You flicked your wrist to strip the guardian of the remains of its heavy armor. You yelled loudly as you tore the guardian in half, using all of your strength and powers, and the creature let out a loud shriek and scream in response.
You've successfully vanquished the final guardian. Reginald in particular was shocked as your family and friends just stood there looking at you in shock. The only way you could defeat it, in Reginald's opinion, was by yourself.
Five was also in shock, but he instantly ran towards you, grunting in pain. "(Y/n)!" He called out as he came near you. Without any response, you collapsed on the floor. "(Y/n)!" He knelt down and saw you groaning in pain. "Hey, hey..." He whispered. "Are you okay?"
Because of how much pain you were enduring, you quickly regretted your chuckle. It felt as though your chest had been torn apart. Your teeth were stained with blood as you smiled and turned to face Five. "I-I... should be the one asking... you that." You croaked out as noticed his missing arm.
"No, no, no. Stop talking."
Your previous remarks to Allison started to echo in the back of her head, which caused Allison's eyes to widen in dread. And she felt ill to her stomach after she remembered how she responded to you.
"Children, come on! Stand on the stars!" Reginald exclaimed for the others to hurry up.
"There's no need to rush, you old bastard! The guardians are fucking dead!" Five yelled at Reginald in anger for how impatient and heartless he sounded. Five's lips quivered as he tried to move you to lay on his lap. You looked up at Five when you turned to face him, and he was caressing your cheek.
Five clenched his jaw and leaned his forehead against yours. "Why do I always have to see you dying, hm?" He asked in a whisper tone.
"I'm... sorry." He had witnessed your death so many times by this point that you felt guilty. You didn't even want to ask. You came to the realization that perhaps this was the reason for his protectiveness toward you or his want to spend so much time with you despite the fact that you had no business being in the location he was in.
Five needed you. He wanted to make up for the time you two had spent apart from one another. He wanted to attempt to build the life that you two might have if he didn't time travel.
"Don't be sorry, okay?" Five soothed as he lightly brushed your hair. "Just stay with me, please? That's all I want you to do. Stay with me."
Five was unaware that his siblings were currently positioned on the stars and that there was only one available spot. The energy around the place built up. Allison was prevented from standing on the star by Reginald while he waited for Five. "Number Five." Reginald calmly called out.
Five hesitated. He was afraid that once he left your side, you would already be gone, thus he didn't want to be apart from you. To cup his cheek, you extended your hand upward. "I-I'll try..." You said while trying to steady your breathing. "B-But... right now, y-you have to end this."
Five nodded before leaning down to plant a kiss on your lips. He didn't care if your mouth was all bloody. He needed strength. He needed to feel your warm lips again before he leaves. Five needed you to be alive.
"I love you..."
"I love you too, Five Hargreeves..."
After a short while, Five placed you on the ground gently before running in the direction of the center's final star. The Hotel Oblivion started to crumble and turn into yellow lines all of a sudden. Above the Hargreeves family, lights appeared.
Reginald walked right up to a round table without being bothered. As it constructed a dome around him, he started to push buttons and move signs at the holographic dome. Allison turned to face Reginald. "This wasn't part of the deal. You're hurting them." She told Reginald in worry when she saw her family in pain.
"I can't stop now," Reginald replied without looking at her. "It'd shut down the machine."
"What machine? I don't understand."
"The hotel was just a facade. We're stuck inside a machine in another dimension. Whoever created the universe built this place." Reginald explained.
"What does any of that have to do with them?" Allison exclaimed.
When Reginald pressed a button, everyone began screaming as their energy particles were being sucked out of their bodies. Each person groaned and cried out in agony. When you saw how much in pain your family was, your eyes widened in horror. "No..." You whispered. You couldn't bear to see Five hurt or in pain. 'No, no, no.'
"The particles inside their bodies are the only things that fuel the machine." Reginald finished his explanation and continued with his work.
Five tried to look at Allison. "He killed Luther." He managed to say. "He tried to kill Klaus. He won't stop until we're all dead."
You stared at Reginald as Five's words processed in your mind. 'It was all him, of course.' Everybody's faces began to look fatigued and pale, as you could see. They were being killed by the device. Everybody is being killed by Reginald. You saw Allison make numerous attempts to stop Reginald even attempting to rumor him, but nothing worked.
You looked around one final time, hoping to save everyone. You turned to scan around and saw the guardian's sickle, his weapon, lying on the ground. Tragically, since you discovered it was broken, the sickle is no longer useful. You noticed that the dagger was still lodged in your chest when you looked down.
Once you plug it out, it's over for you.
"Just stay with me, please? That's all I want you to do."
You turned to Allison, who was still trying to stop Reginald who was still attempting to execute out his plan. You closed your eyes and tightly gripped the handle while taking the dagger's blade out of your chest. As blood began to spill out, you cried out in anguish. Five weakly turned his head to face you. "(Y-Y/n), stop! What are you doing?!"
"Stay with me."
You ignored Five and successfully removed the dagger from your chest using your telekinetic powers. As a lot of blood began to spill out, you started to feel lightheaded. "ALLISON!" You managed to yell out loud as you slightly sat up.
Allison turned her head in your direction and watched you use your powers to attack Reginald with the guardian's dagger. Allison moved aside right away, and you used the dagger and your powers to halt Reginald by successfully slicing off his head. All of the people fell to the ground as the device shut off.
Reginald turned around and exposed his hideous flesh and blood behind the facade, which made Allison gasp. He was an alien. Reginald soon collapsed to the ground, dying on the floor.
You were relieved when the machine stopped. There was no longer any suffering in your family. Five had stopped hurting. All you wanted was for your family to be safe. You were done losing them.
Five, still feeling weak after what had transpired, forced himself to sit up and went in search of you. "(Y/n)...?" He softly asked as moved to reach you. You looked at him and gave him the tiniest smile before falling to the ground, bleeding out. "(Y/n)!" Five cried out and dragged your body close to him.
The others looked in the direction where you were. You looked at Five and reached your hand up to caress his cheek. "Hi..." You choked as you coughed out blood.
"No, no, no. Stop talking." Five replied as he tried to apply pressure on your wound. "Why did you do that? You shouldn't have done that."
"We protect each other... remember?" You grinned. "You... have always protected me... I'm glad I protected you too..."
"(Y/n), please..." Five pleaded as he shook his head. "Just hold on a little longer, can you do that? For me? Please?"
You stared at him, unable to reply to his request. Five shook his head once more. "(Y/n), please, promise me you'll hold on."
"Five... " You breathed out.
"Yes, angel?"
You gently pushed his head down and you placed a kiss on his lips. Five shut his eyes close and kissed you back as his throat started to feel like it was shutting close from too much pain. You pulled away and sighed, staring at him with clouded eyes. "I love you... I love you so much." Content, you briefly smiled and closed your eyes before slowly exhaling, succumbing to your wounds.
Five's heart dropped when he saw your eyes closed. "(Y/n)?" He asked as he lightly shook you. "(Y/n)!"
Klaus spotted his dog tag lying on the ground while it was still wrapped around your neck. "P-Please tell me (Y/n)'s just sleeping..." Klaus told everyone, his eyes watering.
Five scooted closer to you and lightly shook your body again. "(Y/n)?" He asked once more to wake you up. "Hey, come on. Open your eyes for me, baby, please?" Five softly gulped, as he pressed his lips together. "Come on, darling, I'm here. You can't leave. Not now. Come on..."
You stayed motionless and your eyes remained close. Five shook his head in denial. "Please, wake up." He begged as he held your hand. "Come on, I can't live without you, please!"
Still, no response.
Five started breathing heavily and turned to face Klaus. "Klaus! T-Try to bring her back or something! Anything! We need—I need—" Five stammered and lowered his head down, bringing your cold hand on his forehead.
Everyone turned their heads down because they couldn't bear to watch what was happening. Unable to believe what he was witnessing, Viktor clenched his fists. Both his sister and best friend had passed away. And the last thing you did was save them. Klaus tried to be brave but ultimately failed as he blinked a few tears away. But even after wiping away his tears in a childlike manner, they kept falling. As they peered solemnly at Five and you, Lila and Diego were holding hands. Without being able to see that her new friend had passed away, Sloane closed her eyes.
Five's eyes pooled with tears as he pushed your hair back to see your pale face. "(Y/n), please!" He begged. "Open your eyes, please! Please, please, baby, please..." Five leaned his forehead against yours as a tear escaped from his eye and fell down on your cheek.
Allison stood still. Tears streaming down her face. 'No, no, no. She doesn't... she doesn't deserve this. This wasn't supposed to happen!'
"The world is ending in six days. At least let me apologize to you formally." Allison remembered what she said back in 1963. "You didn't deserve any of the pain you've endured. Everyone doesn't deserve this kind of experience or pain. You deserved so much more, (Y/n). The actions I've done, well, they were terrible, especially to you."
Allison knew she needed to do something. To stop all of this. At least an effort to bring you back.
"I love you (Y/n). What I've done isn't okay and I understand if you forgive me or not."
"Allison. It's really alright. I know you didn't mean it and you regretted it. I understand."
With her back to the holographic dome screen's red button, Allison turned around and turned to face it. She proceeded to reach the button with her hand up to press it, but Five immediately turned around to face her while still holding your body. "Allison..." He called out. "Allison, don't touch that button. We don't know what it does."
"Allison, stop!" Viktor yelled as he stood up and glowed, attempting to use his powers against his sister. "Don't make me do this!"
Allison weakly smiled at Viktor. "Do you trust me?"
Viktor hesitated. He glanced at you before looking back at Allison. Viktor powered down which caught Five by surprise. "Viktor, what are you doing? Stop her!"
"Allison, wait!" Klaus shouted.
"Allison, don't do it!" Five screamed.
In opposition to Allison pressing the button, everyone yelled and protested. Allison remained deaf from the protests and pushed the button.

The elevator doors opened and everyone stepped out of the elevator. Car horns could be heard in the distance by everyone. The hotel was different. There were trees and lampposts all over, giving the area the appearance of a park. Lila laughed. "Cool."
As Viktor and Five neared a memorial plaque, they saw a sculpture of Reginald's head. By his statue, there was a metal plate.
OBSIDIAN
MEMORIAL PARK
ɢʀᴀᴄɪᴏᴜꜱʟʏ ᴅᴏɴᴀᴛᴇᴅ ʙʏ
SIR REGINALD HARGREEVES
ᴛʜɪꜱ 1ꜱᴛ ᴅᴀʏ ᴏꜰ ᴏᴄᴛᴏʙᴇʀ 1989
When the elevator doors opened, Viktor turned around to see a familiar face. "Luther?" He asked in shock. Luther was alive and his body changed. He no longer possesses the same gorilla body that he once did. "Luther?" Viktor grinned and approached Luther.
Luther's eyes widened. "Oh shit." He gasped out loud. "You can see me?"
"Yes!" Viktor beamed as he nodded vigorously.
"I'm alive?"
"Yes!" Viktor jumped up and hugged Luther and Luther hugged him back, carrying him. "I'm alive! Oh!"
Five stared in shock to see his sibling now alive. Despite the fact that he was relieved to find Luther alive, he looked behind him to see if anyone else was arriving.
"Luther's alive!" Klaus cheered as he clapped his hands.
Lila gasped. "Oh my God!"
Viktor pulled away and looked at Luther's body. "Wait. That's not all, big guy."
Luther was confused. "Huh?" He looked down and he noticed his body was changed. "Woah! Oh shit! My body! Wait. I look amazing."
"Luther's all svelte now," Klaus commented.
"Wait. I gotta show Sloane." Luther exclaimed in happiness.
Five raised his arm up and widened his eyes. "I got my arm back." When he pulled his sleeve up, he noticed that his wristwatch was still missing.
Diego showed Lila his fingers have returned. Lila gasped. "You got your fingers back!"
While the missing limbs had returned, the scars from Ben and Diego, as well as Klaus' tattoos, had vanished. Even their Umbrella Academy tattoos were erased.
"This is so cool." Luther looked around when he noticed Sloane was missing. "W-Wait. Where's Sloane?"
Klaus pondered for a second. "Oh, she was, uh... She was right behind me—"
"When Allison hit the bloody button." Lila interrupted.
"She's gone too," Diego added and looked around. "But... so is (Y/n)."
"Does anyone know where the hell we are?" Ben questioned aggressively.
"The hotel," Lila replied. "Or at least this is where it used to be."
Five furrowed his eyebrows as he thought for a moment. "I think the old man did it. I think he reset the universe." He looked away as he thought about you. 'Why aren't you here with us? With me?' He clenched his jaw. 'You're not permanently dead... are you?'
"Hey. I don't care about any resets, all right?" Luther marched his way at Five and pulled him by his blazer. "I want my wife back. Where is she, Five?"
Five looked up at Luther. "I'm glad you're alive, but please take your hand off me. We both lost someone here."
Luther grabbed the other side of Five's blazer, pulling him up in anger and annoyance. "Not until you give me an answer."
Five scoffed. "Okay, screw this." He jolted his body to move forward in order to perform his spatial jump, however, nothing happened. Five looked at everyone. "Something's wrong." He alarmed everyone.
"That's right." Luther nodded as he gripped Five's collar tighter. "You're about to get your ass kicked."
Diego nodded, excited to see Luther beating Five. "Yeah, kick his ass."
Five glared at Luther. "No, you moron. My power. I can't blink."
Diego pulled his knife out. "Yeah, right." He began spinning it until the knife dropped. "That's not good."
Everyone began to try and use their powers but was unsuccessful. Klaus waved one hand. "Okay... come on. Alakazam... ghosties." Nothing. Even if he tried to bring you back, nothing. Klaus groaned. "This means I'm mortal again? Aw man! How am I supposed to bring (Y/n) back? O-Or see her again? I didn't even get to see her in the Void!"
"Wait, wait, wait. How do we get 'em back, you idiots?" Ben questioned.
No one could give a right or proper answer for Ben. No one knew. Luther started stepping back. "I gotta... I gotta go find my wife." He announced before leaving.
Klaus shook his head and began chasing after his brother. "No! Luther, you can't go. You were dead five minutes ago. You're fragile!" He spun around to briefly face everyone. "I gotta go after him."
"No. Wa—Klaus, wait!" Diego tried to call Klaus out but he was already running away to chase after Luther.
Ben shook his head. "I'm out, bitches." He hissed and walked away, leaving Diego, Lila, Viktor, and Five. Viktor sighed. "What? Guys, come on. We should stick together and figure this out—"
"Well, what are we supposed to do?" Diego questioned, interrupting Viktor's sentence. Lila thought for a moment and looked up at Diego. "Live our lives?" She smiled.
Diego and Lila entwined their fingers and left Five and Viktor, remaining silent. Five was flabbergasted. After everything that has happened, Five watched his family choose to leave. Unsure of what to do next, Viktor and Five exchanged blank looks as they turned to face one another. Five continued to feel alone even with Viktor by his side. The pain in his heart was accompanied by boiling wrath. Five turned around and left Viktor alone, having enough and feeling completely alone.
Every step he took, his heart has now started hammering loudly and painfully. He swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to get rid of it. When he was out of the previous hotel's grounds, Five quickly shed a tear from the corner of his eye.
Say I wouldn't care if you walked away
But every time you're there I'm begging you to stay
Five wasn't the man who cries easily. Sure he can be soft, but he was never a crier. If he felt upset or on the verge of losing it, he would take a deep breath and collect himself, just like he had done back at the Commission following his conversation with his future self.
When you come close I just tremble
And every time, every time you go
It was different this time, though. Because before he didn't lose you. And now, he felt like he completely did. And no time travel can change that. He has no powers. Because of the huge alteration to the timeline, he no longer has you. He had never felt more lost.
It's like a knife that cuts right through my soul
Five swiftly crept into one of the deserted alleyways and leaned with his back against the wall. To prevent himself from crying out, he started to breathe deeply. 'No, no, no. Stop.' He told himself to prevent from crying. 'Keep yourself together, Five.' But after witnessing his siblings part ways, failing to fix the timeline correctly, and losing you, it was just too much for him. He was surprised that he can even manage to hold himself from keeping back his tears from exhaustion.
Only love, only love can hurt like this
Only love can hurt like this
However, this time will change everything. Five's lips quivered and his tears uncontrollably streamed down his cheeks. It hurt too much to hold back. However, he did bend down and cry. He didn't move and kept gazing into the wall in front of him. Never in his life has Five recalled himself crying this much.
"I love you too, Five Hargreeves..."
Your touch, eyes, and smile are all things he misses. He misses everything about you. He misses you. As he continued to struggle to control his sobs, Five's eyes blinked. He eventually screamed in rage and kicked a couple of crates that were lying around. "FUCK!" He was frustrated and devasted. "Fuck, fuck fuck, fuck!"
He wanted you. Only you.
Must have been a deadly kiss
Only love can hurt like this
He couldn't care less whether passersby saw a teen trashing in the alleyway and acting like he was having a temper tantrum. The good news for him was that no one cared about him because there were just a few people around.
Only love can hurt like this
Five ran his fingers through his hair as tears continued to fall down. 'Stop. Make it stop.' He craned his neck up and closed his eyes, sighing heavily and gulping hard. He wanted the pain to stop. Once he opened his eyes, Five turned his head and looked up to one of the buildings that Sir Reginald Hargreeves owned. He aimed a furious glare toward the building as if he sensed the presence of his adoptive father who was presumably watching the city below. Five silently cursed him in his head.
And he was right. Sir Reginald Hargreeves was standing in that building, gazing down at the city, and his wife, Abigail, had joined him. Reginald broke his gaze on the city and stared longingly at his wife, holding her hand. The two shared a short kiss before turning to look down at the city once more.
Reginald turned his head to the side in order to check the hospital bed across the room. "How is she?" He heard Abigail ask him.
"Surviving," Reginald replied.
Reginald stared at the hospital bed and saw you unconscious and breathing heavily, but steadily. You were surrounded by tubes and monitors that were there to keep you alive and promote wound healing. To aid in breathing, a ventilator was also present with you.
You were weaker and paler than before, and you had dark circles under your eyes. You had bandages across your chest and were dressed in a hospital gown.
Reginald and Abigail walked towards the bed and Reginald stood next to you while moving a strand of stray hair away from your face. "She'll wake up soon." He reassured.
Your finger moved slightly when you were lying on the bed, but neither Reginald nor Abigail failed to notice. And on your wrist was Five's watch, which despite having a fractured watch glass was still operational.
-•-°-•-°-☆
Y'ALL I WAS TRYING SO HARD NOT TO CRY WHILE WRITING FIVE CRYING BECAUSE I WAS WRITING THIS IN THE LIVING ROOM WHERE MY MOM WAS PRESENT. AND "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" IS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND. I AM IN PAIN. ("Atlantis" was also playing so... 🥲)
IT IS TRUE, THAT FIVE IS NOT THE ONE TO CRY, BUT I THINK THIS TIME, I HAD TO CHANGE IT. HE LOST SO MUCH, OKAY? THE MAN NEEDS TO LET IT ALL OUT. You guys wanted Five to see (Y/n) dead, right? You also wanted Five to have a breakdown. It probably wasn't accurate, but I tried :')
You got what you wanted. Now deal with it. I'm just giving you guys what you wished for.
Also! Book 4's title will beeee:
