chapter 21
JASMINE DIDN'T STOP DRIVING AFTER SHE FOUND OUT ABOUT DEMETRI. In fact, Astra noticed she seemed even more scared than before. Astra couldn't hold in her questions any longer. "You told me you'd been stalking the Volturi for a long time now, so why didn't you know about Demetri?"
Jasmine sighed, "I was so busy with the Romano family that I forgot to make sure I knew everything."
Logan observed the black-haired girl and then looked at Astra, "What she means to say is she acted on impulse. She's not had time to stalk the Kings, Stefano had her doing all of the hard work."
"Yeah. After Stefano found out what I was, I almost never had a day off. I was constantly killing or torturing someone for him." Jasmine explained.
"Why didn't you just leave the Romano family and put all of your time into finding the Volturi's weak spot?" Astra questioned. "No offense, but, if you wanted revenge on the Volturi so bad, you should've put all of your time into it."
Logan stared at Astra with an unreadable expression, "Who's side are you on?"
"My own, of course." Astra cheekily replied.
Jasmine looked in the review mirror and sped up. "The Volturi are behind us." she said. Her voice wavered as she spoke.
Logan turned around and exclaimed, "Shit! Go, go, go!"
"How did they get here so fast? We should've been hours ahead of them!" Jasmine exclaimed. Panic was written all over her face and it almost made Astra feel sorry for her. Almost.
"It's probably because you stole their freaking soulmate!" Logan raged, "Why did I let you convince me that this was a good idea?"
Jasmine had pressed the gas all the way down, and they were now flying at two-hundred miles per hour. Jasmine was skillfully driving between cars, and avoiding hitting any of them. All Astra could do was hope that they didn't wreck.
DEMETRI SWORE AS HE STARTED DRIVING FASTER. He was trying his hardest to keep up with the black suv that held the future Queen, but it was starting to get difficult. He wasn't the best at driving, and it was getting hard to swerve between cars.
"You guys have super speed, why don't you just get out and chase the car?" questioned Hector as he looked at the three kings. "Don't you think you would catch up to them faster?"
Aro looked annoyed, mostly because he didn't think of the idea first. Marcus had a thoughtful expression on his face, and Caius had already jumped out of the car and was speeding towards the vehicle holding his soulmate. He wasted no time in jumping on the top of it.
The loud bang startled the people inside of the vehicle. "What was that?" Logan exclaimed. The fear was evident in his voice.
"Caius." Jasmine said, her voice short. She swerved the car to the side, trying to knock the vampire off.
"If I die, I'm haunting you for all eternity." Logan swore.
Astra was tired of hearing Logan and Jasmine banter back and forth. Ever since Logan joined them in the suv, they had been arguing constantly. She was happy that she was going to be rescued. She didn't know what Jasmine had planned for her, and she didn't want to find out.
The passenger door was suddenly ripped off of the hinges, causing Jasmine to swerve again. Logan screamed and jumped head first into the back with Astra. She quickly moved to the side to avoid being hit by him, and held back a laugh when he started groaning in pain.
Caius had entered the suv while that was happening and was now fighting Jasmine for the wheel. Astra's eyes widened as she saw a vehicle coming straight for them. "Look out!" she yelled.
The car swung to the right, barely missing the other vehicle. "Stop this vehicle now!" demanded Caius.
Astra, having a sudden burst of courage, wrapped her arms around Jasmine's neck and pulled. She tried her hardest to choke her out, but it didn't bother her at all. "Seriously?" Jasmine yelled.
Logan looked at the situation with fear in his eyes, and then pulled on Astra's arm. "We have to get out of this thing. They're going to wreck."
Astra glared at him, "And how do you suggest we do that? We'll die if we try to jump out!"
"We'll die if we don't jump out!" Logan shot back.
Suddenly, the doors on the back of the suv were ripped off. Logan and Astra heads turned into the direction of the action to see who it was. Astra couldn't help the happy laugh that left her lips when she saw it was Aro. "Mi amore!" he happily called out. It was hard to hear him over the sounds of traffic, but Astra was able to make out the words.
"I could kiss you right now!" she exclaimed.
Aro grinned and walked closer to her, "We can do that later." He wasted no time in picking her up bridle style and preparing himself to jump out of the vehicle with her.
"Wait!" Logan called out just as he was about to jump. "What about me?"
Aro looked back at him, an angry expression in his face. "Don't worry." he replied, his voice full of venom, "I'll be back for you."
Astra's hair whipped through the wind as Aro jumped out of the moving suv. She buried her head in his neck and braced herself for impact, but it never came. She felt a harsh breeze blow on her and then suddenly it was gone. She was gently set down on a soft seat, and she opened her eyes to find herself inside of a car with Hector, Demetri, and Marcus. She gently kissed Aro on the cheek and whispered, "Thank you."
The dark-haired vampire stared at her with an intense look in his eyes. They briefly flickered to her lips, "Your welcome." he replied. He then removed his arms off of her and headed back towards the suv.
Astra turned towards her other soulmate, and grinned at him. She threw herself into his arms and breathed deeply, "Marcus." she said softly. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his head on hers.
"Did they hurt you?" he whispered into her ear.
Astra lightly shook her head, "No. They didn't." she pulled back and looked into his eyes, "But they would have if you all hadn't found me."
"Hello, it's me. Your lovely brother who has been deeply worried about you." Hector sarcastically said, "And I didn't even get a hello."
Astra chuckled and turned around in Marcus' arms so she could look at him. "I was getting there." she replied. She was far too happy to start an argument with him.
Demetri abruptly turned the wheel to the right and went into the grass. He slowly came to a stop just as a loud crash sounded. Astra's head whipped in the direction of the sound and found the car she had previously been in flipped over and on fire. Her heart quickened and her eyes grew wide. She pulled herself out of Marcus' grip, threw the car door open and began to run towards the disaster, "Caius!" She yelled. Marcus grabbed her before she could make it far and turned her around to face him. He cupped her face in his hands.
"Calm down, Astra. He's okay." He soothed in a low tone. It did nothing to help the blonde woman.
"How can he be okay? It's on fire! Doesn't fire kill you all?" Tears were filling her eyes at the thought of Caius being gone forever. Another pair of arms wrapped around her waist and a head laid on hers.
"He made it out before they crashed." Astra leaned back into Aro's arms and looked up at him. He was already staring down at her with a soft look on his face.
"Are you sure?" asked Astra. Her voice broke as she spoke. She hadn't felt this strongly about losing someone since she had lost her parents. She couldn't bear losing one of her soulmates.
Aro gave her a small smile, "Positive." He moved them around to face the vehicle and Astra's body sagged in relief as she saw the blonde king walking towards them with an unconscious Jasmine and a beaten up Logan.
"Caius!" She removed herself from Aro's arms and raced towards him. Caius dropped Jasmine on the ground and opened his arms as Astra threw herself at him. She wrapped her legs around his waist and buried her head in his neck. "I thought you were dead." She whispered to him. Tears leaked out of her eyes and landed on his cold skin.
Hector cleared his throat, "As disgusting as this is," he kicked Jasmine's body, "what are we going to do about her?"
Astra's face burned and she tried to remove herself from Caius but he held on tighter. She lifted her head and sheepishly looked at her brother as Aro responded to him in a venomous tone, "We'll deal with her."
Hector scoffed, "Um, no. Sorry but I'm not about to be left out of getting revenge for my sister. I'm helping you guys with whatever it is you're planning on doing."
Aro studied him for a moment and then nodded his, "Fine."
Logan glanced between them all, "Can I leave? This wasn't my idea and I told her not to do it." He chuckled nervously after he was done speaking and shuffled his feet.
Caius glared at him, "No. You're coming with us."
"You were an accomplice. You must pay for your crimes." Marcus drawled as he motioned for Demtri to grab him. "No one touches our soulmate and goes unpunished."
