Arabella grumbled to herself for the tenth time that evening as she opened a new tab, searching for hotels. To her dismay, another hotel rated 1.5 stars, with a review mentioning rats in the walls. She sighed, frustration mounting as she continued her search for a suitable place to stay.
Arabella sat in a bustling Charleston cafe, her laptop open as she searched for hotels for her upcoming stay in Los Angeles. The irony of being back in the same cafe where she had reunited with Noah wasn't lost on her. Despite the memories, it was a place where she often found peace. The noise of the cafe provided a comforting background as she scrolled through hotel options, lost in her thoughts.
Arabella wasn't sad about the breakup at all; if anything, she felt relieved. But right now, she was anything but happy. Searching for a hotel for the next four months was exhausting. She scrolled through listing after listing. Her brow furrowed in concentration, determined to find the perfect place to stay.
Arabella was interrupted from her thoughts by a familiar voice. Furrowing her eyebrows, she looked up from her laptop to see Drew ordering a coffee at the counter.
A silent laugh escaped Arabella as she found the situation ironic. The last memory she had in this cafe was with both Noah and Drew, and it wasn't a pleasant one. She remembered exchanging some not-so-nice words with Drew, and now here he was, the same place.
Arabella decided to remain silent as Drew grabbed two coffees, opting not to engage with him. Curiosity hit her as she wondered who the second coffee was for, and she mentally slapped herself for even thinking about it. Quickly burying her thoughts, she refocused her attention on her computer, determined to finish her task.
Ignoring Drew didn't seem to deter him, as he spotted Arabella on his way out. "Arabella?" he questioned as he approached her table.
Arabella looked up from her computer, a smile spreading across her face. "Drew, hey," she greeted warmly. She was actually somewhat happy that he had decided to strike up a conversation with her, despite her initial reluctance.
"You always here?" Drew chuckled, stepping closer to her table, still holding the two coffees.
Arabella playfully rolled her eyes at Drew. "Only when I'm stressed," she admitted, giving him a teasingly annoyed look. "What are you doing here?" She asked, hoping he would mention something about the coffees.
She mentally slapped herself again. Why did she care so much?
"Rudy was craving some coffee from this place," Drew explained, eyeing the two coffees in his hands before raising them up to show Arabella, which made her laugh.
"What?" Arabella asked when she noticed Drew furrowing his eyebrows.
Drew gave Arabella a pointed look. "That's your 'I'm so stressed so I'm going to give you a fake laugh' laugh," he remarked, chuckling lightly. "What's going on?"
"Long story." Arabella tried brushed it off.
"I have time," Drew shrugged, pulling the chair across from Arabella out and sitting on it.
Arabella chuckled, "you sure Rudy won't get mad that his coffee is cold?"
Drew looked at the coffees and made a dismissive noise. "We have a microwave, he can suck it up," he replied.
Arabella smiled at Drew, then stopped abruptly, realizing that she had an actual problem in front of her.
"Is this about Noah?" Drew questioned hesitantly, shifting in his seat. "Because if it is, I'm sorry, but I cannot hear another word about that dude." His words were cautious, as if he was treading carefully around a sensitive topic.
Arabella's eyes widened at Drew's words. "No—no... God no," she quickly interjected, shutting down his assumption.
"Alright," he nodded, scratching the back of his head nervously. "I'm sorry about the breakup, by the way," he spoke, but his words sounded anything but genuine.
Arabella gave Drew a tight-lipped smile and nodded. They both knew the conversation had taken an awkward turn, and Arabella was eager to shut down the topic of Noah. She cleared her throat, in hope to steer the conversation in a different direction.
"Thanks, but it's not about him," Arabella stated, though her words sounded awkward. "It's just moving things."
"Oh, shit, I forgot that you have to go back home to New York too," Drew let out a breathy laugh, though there was a part of him that didn't find it funny. They had just gotten on good terms, and now they were going their separate ways again. Fate seemed to be playing games with them once again, and Drew couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment at the thought of Arabella leaving.
He was headed to Los Angeles, while she was returning to New York. It felt like déjà vu from the summer before their freshman year of college, when they had parted ways, unsure of how much they would keep in contact.
Arabella shook her head. "I'm not going to New York, actually," she said, closing her computer to give Drew her full attention. "My team wants me to go to Los Angeles." She paused, "That's actually where the whole problem lies. My parents' properties in L.A. are all under construction, so I don't know where to stay while I'm there."
"You're going to L.A.?" Drew asked, his eyebrows raised in surprise. He hadn't expected her to be heading to the same city he was going to.
Arabella nodded.
Drew chewed on his lip before speaking. "Ara, you could've just asked me," he said, "I'm coming to L.A. in the middle of September. You can just stay at my place..." He paused, realizing what he just offered. Drew wasn't sure what had possessed him to make such an offer, but he couldn't bear to see Arabella struggling.
Arabella was taken aback by Drew's offer. Sure, they were friends, if that was the right word, but an offer this big from Drew, of all people, surprised her. She hesitated, unsure of how to respond to such a big offer.
Drew then added, "Unless you don't want to, of course. Just a suggestion—" He trailed off, giving Arabella an out in case she wasn't comfortable with his offer.
"No—no," Arabella cut Drew off, shaking her head. "No, seriously, thank you, Drew. But I just have to think about it."
Drew understood what Arabella was implying, even without her explicitly saying it. Having your ex living in the same house as you for the next four months would undoubtedly be awkward.
"No, yeah," Drew nodded, brushing a hand through his buzzed hair. Glancing at his watch, he got up from his seat. "Shit, I gotta go," he said, realizing the time. Before leaving, he turned to Arabella. "But seriously, Ara, if you need anything, let me know. Just because we have... history, doesn't mean I don't still care about you."
As Arabella watched Drew walk out the door, a small smile tugged at her lips. However, her smile faded when she noticed that he had left one of his coffees behind. She hesitated for a moment, debating whether to chase after him to return it.
She picked up the forgotten coffee cup, intending to return it to Drew. However, before she could get up, she noticed some words written on it.
Written on the coffee cup were the words, "It's Mocha Coffee, just what you like."
