astoria sits in the backseat of the triplets' minivan with nick, the four of them singing along to 'good days' by sza as they cruise down the street. she'd been woken up by a random call from chris at around 5 o'clock this morning asking her if she wants to come with him and his brothers to watch the sunrise. of course, she'd agreed. astoria loves sunrise, much more than sunset. it's much more serene in her eyes.
"i'm so happy the weather's finally getting warmer again," astoria sighs, smiling. nick nods in agreement.
"for real," he says.
"this weather reminds me of when we'd all play in rory's backyard during summer since she had a trampoline and we were all really jealous," chris says.
"yeah, until you played that stupid prank on her in seventh grade and she didn't want you there anymore," nick retorts, rolling his eyes.
matt laughs, having overheard the conversation even while he's driving. meanwhile, astoria is frozen in her seat. she's genuinely shocked that nick would bring that up, and is slowly realizing that she's about to have to explain a lot of things she's been putting off for a while now.
"wait..." chris starts, turning around in the passenger seat to look at her. "that's where it all started? because of the prank at camp?"
she nods sheepishly, cheeks burning with embarrassment. chris' eyes widen, and nick is trying his best not to laugh. astoria glares at him.
"why would you hate me after that?" chris asks, and astoria and nick look at one another, shocked that he's even asking this.
"bro, are you dumb?" matt pipes up, glancing at his brother for a second before returning his focus to the road.
"i feel like there's something you all know that i don't," chris huffs, looking at all of them suspiciously. astoria just shrugs her shoulders nonchalantly, happy to keep him curious about the situation.
nick sighs loudly, honestly in disbelief that his own brother is this oblivious.
"rory had a fat crush on you in middle school," he announces, catching both astoria and chris off guard. chris' jaw drops as he looks at his girlfriend, who just smiles awkwardly at him.
"surprise!" she mumbles, embarrassed. nick and matt find this to be the most amusing thing ever, as they both giggle under their breaths.
chris stays silent for a moment, before he bursts out into laughter. astoria raises her eyebrows, watching her boyfriend as he literally cackles over this new information he's just heard.
"there's no way," he says between laughs, and she frowns.
"yeah, alright," she deadpans. "it's really not that funny."
"it is," chris disagrees.
"i wouldn't be laughing so hard if i were you," matt interjects. "you had a crush on her too and became depressed for a solid month when she stopped talking to you."
chris' smile drops entirely and now it's astoria's turn to laugh. she chuckles at his annoyed look as he glares at matt.
"maybe i wouldn't have been depressed if you'd told me that i fucked up," he says frustratedly. matt just shrugs.
"i wasn't about to expose my girl like that," nick replies simply, and astoria grins at him. "also, you can't blame any of this on me and matt. you guys were awful to each other for years," he adds. astoria and chris share a look, and both shrug awkwardly.
"well, it all worked out in the end, right?" she says. nick rolls his eyes.
"thank fuck, because i was a second away from losing my shit," he says.
"agreed," matt says. "especially when it was obvious to literally everyone that you didn't actually hate each other."
astoria presses her lips together, staying quiet about the situation. even though she's dating chris now and is happier than ever, she's still valid to be delusional over the whole thing for a while longer. she did hate him for a long time, but she knows deep down as soon as he started dating harper, she realized her true feelings: the opposite.
even though it took them a while, astoria is so glad that she and chris are where they are today. she genuinely couldn't be happier, and feels like she's finally at peace after everything that's happened in her life over the past year.
well, that's excluding the fact that the one year anniversary of her father's passing is in less than a week.
it's been on her mind for a while now, but with everything that's happened with chris, casper, harper, maeve, and her friends, astoria has kind of pushed the thoughts aside. she can't believe a whole year has already passed, an entire year that she and her family have lived without him.
it's a weird feeling, knowing that thanks to some dumb drunk driver, astoria won't get to experience having her dad at her 18th birthday, her wedding, or her graduation, which is only a couple months away. he won't ever cook mason his favorite meal again, he won't ever come home from work with flowers for their mom, he won't ever laugh or smile or cry or even speak again, because he's gone.
for the rest of the car ride, astoria keeps on a brave face, pretending to be interested in the triplets' conversation about god knows what. admittedly, she feels relieved when matt finally pulls up outside of her house and she can get out, saying an unusually fast goodbye to the three boys before making her way inside her home.
astoria takes a deep breath as she closes the door behind her, looking up to find her younger brother looking at her as he walks down the stairs. he looks just as miserable as she feels, and astoria suspects he's got the same thing on his mind as she currently does.
"hey," she says quietly, the two siblings walking into the kitchen together.
"hi," mason answers with a brighter tone than she would've expected from him right now. he takes a glass from the cabinet and fills it up with water, continuing to watch his sister closely as he takes a long sip.
"what's the matter?" he asks suddenly, catching her completely off guard.
"nothing," she lies, not wanting to upset him. mason furrows his eyebrows.
"i can see that something's wrong, ria," he tells her. "i know you."
she sighs, knowing he's right. although she doesn't want to make him upset by reminding him of their dad, she shouldn't lie to him. after all, he's always been better than her at understanding emotions and might be able to help.
"i just..." she starts, not entirely sure where she's going with this. "can you believe it's been a year?" she asks.
"no," he replies with a shrug. astoria tilts her head sideways, confused by his response.
"and that doesn't bother you?" she questions.
"nah," mason shakes his head. "i like the fact that it doesn't feel long. i feel like i haven't lived a lot of my life without him yet."
his words actually make a lot of sense, and somehow astoria already feels much better about the whole thing. she rubs her eyes, thinking for a second.
"have you spoken to mom about what we're doing for dad's anniversary?" she then asks mason, who nods.
"she really likes your idea with the lanterns, ria," he tells her. "the weather is supposed to be good on thursday, so she wants to go to the beach and set them off."
she and her family were talking about it a while ago, and astoria came up with the idea to light lanterns and set them off for the anniversary of her dad's passing. being from brazil, he always loved the beach, and she thought it would be a nice tribute. her dad would want them to celebrate his life rather than being sad that it got cut short.
"alright," astoria murmurs. she feels like she should be excited about doing something nice with her family for her father, but it honestly just feels like shit. it feels like her heart has been ripped on and continuously stamped on, preventing her from being able to enjoy the moment.
mason goes silent as well, clearly noticing her dejected mood. his lips have twisted downwards into a frown as he looks away from his sister to the wall, where a picture frame hangs. it's a photo of their family from many years ago, when mason and astoria were just toddlers. their parents are standing together on the beach, both of their children hugging their parents' legs with ginormous smiles on their faces. what he would give to go back to that day, when everything was perfect.
he turns back to astoria then, and mason sighs. he can't bear to see his sister like this, so he speaks up again.
"why don't you invite chris?"
the question surprises her, and she blinks. mason swallows nervously, kind of regretting his suggestion.
"i mean, not just chris," he adds. "matt, nick, kali, skye, and luna too. i think they'd like to go."
"i don't know..." astoria answers unsurely.
"come on," mason answers. "dad would've liked to have them there, especially the triplets. don't you think they would want to come?"
"maybe you're right," she says, starting to understand what he means. their dad was always fond of all of her friends, especially the one who has now turned out to be her boyfriend. it would definitely make it a lot easier if he was there, as well as her friends.
"marylou and jimmy can come too, and kali's parents," mason goes on. "then we can make it into a real celebration, just like he would've wanted."
astoria nods in agreement. suddenly, her excitement for the lanterns has returned at the thought of a big group being there to celebrate her dad's life, rather than just a depressing tribute. the others will definitely be able to lift her mood.
"you're right," she decides. "i'll text them now, and see if they wanna come."
"sounds good," mason replies with a nod, now setting down his empty glass and going to leave the kitchen. astoria stops him though, pulling her brother into a tight hug.
"i love you, mas," she whispers.
"i love you too, ria," he answers. "now let me go, you're cutting off my air flow!"
she chuckles and releases him, ruffling mason's hair playfully. he rolls his eyes, walking off and back upstairs. astoria takes her phone from her pocket, moving to sit down at the dining table as she opens the imessage app, suddenly feeling nervous.
