just as astoria sets down her phone, the screen lights up with an incoming facetime call from kali. she furrows her eyebrows in confusion, but presses the accept button anyway. she sets her phone up against her laptop screen, which currently displays algebra homework that she was just staring at rather than doing.

"hey," her friend greets, and astoria smiles at the camera. kali is also sat at her desk, wearing her glasses, which is a rare sight for the girl, as she usually wears contacts.

"what's up?" astoria asks, subtly trying to figure out why her friend is calling her. it's not uncommon for them to facetime, but she'd assumed kali would be busy since they were all complaining about how much homework they all have on the ride home from school earlier.

"photography is genuinely going to make me kill myself," kali replies dramatically, running her hands through her hair.

"bro, same," astoria agrees. "today in my free period i just sat and stared at my photos for an hour."

"too real," the girl answers, her attention switching between her ipad and the facetime call. "i called you 'cause i thought you would yell at me to focus or something."

astoria chuckles, rolling her eyes.

"i'm as fucked as you right now, so..." she says apologetically, which is followed by kali sighing loudly.

"okay, well let's swear to be productive right now," she decides, her spirits suddenly raised. "we can't hang up until we're done with the project."

"we're about to break the world record for longest facetime call ever, then," astoria jokes, earning her a laugh from kali. her expression turns serious a moment later, and she sighs again.

"come on, rory," she pleads. "it's due in a week."

"alright, fine," astoria agrees with a sigh. "we focus until we're done with the project."

not to anyone's surprise, kali and astoria did not focus until they finished their photography projects. in fact, within twenty minutes kali got up from her desk and started making cookies. the girls gossiped and complained about school the entire time, and they've been talking for so long that the cookies have been out of the oven for over an hour now.

instead of going back to their projects, the two are now playing roblox. kali forced them to play some horror game, and astoria's heart is literally racing as she makes her character run around the dark house. she doesn't play roblox often but judging by this game alone, she worries for the future generation of kids who are constantly playing it.

right as the killer turns the corner and sees her, astoria's phone buzzes with a notification. she ignores it, beginning to stress as the player chases her around the map.

"you got a text," kali reminds her, and astoria huffs in frustration.

"i know," she says through gritted teeth. "but the fucking murderer is chasing me right now!"

"oh, you're dead," kali says, and astoria rolls her eyes as the girl is proven right literally five seconds later. she sighs, watching as her character breaks into several pieces and she's kicked out of the game. she discards her laptop and picks up her phone. her eyes widen when she sees who the text is from.

"kali..." she begins, still trying to process the text. "harper just dm'd me on instagram."

on her screen she sees kali's jaw drop, though her friend's eyes never leave her ipad, since she's still alive in the game.

"what the fuck?" kali says. "what does she want?"

"me dead, probably," astoria replies, pressing on the instagram. she's hesitant at first, but then decides to just press on the message and see what this girl wants.

"cleared her," kali says. astoria has been giving her a direct commentary of the conversation, excluding the part about harper forcing herself on him. as far as she's aware, she's the only person who knows and she doesn't want to tell anyone if chris isn't ready for them to know yet.

astoria has the urge to laugh because of how ridiculous the situation is. she genuinely believes every interaction she's ever had with harper is a fever dream because of how utterly insane the girl is. how she's still so obsessed with her and chris is a little concerning, if she's being honest.

"i try my best," she replies sarcastically, and kali laughs. she's completely ignoring roblox now, fully invested in the harper drama.

"are you going to tell chris?" she asks, and astoria frowns.

"yeah, i mean, i feel like i have to," she says. "especially if that psycho starts texting him as well."

"smart," kali nods in agreement. "god, she's actually fucking crazy," she adds. astoria just laughs. her friend is not wrong.

the two of them sit in silence for a moment, astoria still struggling to believe the text conversation she was just forced to have. she hopes she's done the right thing, and that chris won't be mad when he finds out.

"kals," she says a moment later, worry setting in.

"hm?" the girl replies, before biting into one of the cookies she baked.

"do you think chris will be mad?" she asks. kali finishes her bite, then gives astoria a knowing look.

"of course not," she answers. "why?"

"i don't know," astoria shrugs. "maybe he would've wanted me to mind my business and ignore her."

kali knits her eyebrows, setting down the cookie and thinking for a moment.

"rory, harper was clearly just trying to start beef with you. you did the right thing for calling her out. if chris is mad at you for sticking up for yourself, then that's his fucking problem."

the harshness of her words shocks astoria a little, but she nods all the same. kali's right, after all. she's sick of harper constantly trying to argue with her and make her feel shit about herself. she hasn't done anything wrong, and neither is chris. besides, it felt good to put the girl in her place.

"okay, good," she says. "i'll tell him tomorrow, or something."

"why not now?" kali frowns. astoria sighs.

"i don't wanna dwell on it all night," she replies. "i'll tell him tomorrow, once i've had some time to think about it and move on."

"good idea," kali muses. "and we have to focus now. but like, actually this time."

"for real," astoria laughs, getting up from her bed and moving back to her desk, bringing her phone with her. the photos are scattered across the table just like they were in the library earlier. her eyes immediately land on that same photo of chris again, and she smiles.
