CHAPTER THIRTY !

chris swallows nervously as he sits next to matt in the car. they're just sitting in the driveway, waiting for nick to get all their shit so that they can go somewhere to film. he complains every fucking week about how chris and matt never help him carry the stuff to the car, but every time they actually try and help he yells at them for doing it wrong, so they've given up.

brent faiyaz plays quietly through the speakers, the song being the only noise in the otherwise silent car. it's honestly kind of awkward, sitting next to his brother, who has no idea what the fuck happened yesterday.

"sooooo," chris speaks, breaking the silence between them. "the weather's nice today."

matt turns to look at him and actually just laughs in his face. chris is a little taken aback, but he honestly can't say he's surprised. matt glances out of the car, gesturing to the fact that it's literally pouring with rain outside, then gives chris a knowing look. he shakes his head.

"the weather is just so great," he muses, a playful smile on his face. he chews on the end of his straw, waiting for chris to reply.

chris shrugs in agreement. "yup," he says quietly. "great for going on a walk."

"going on a walk?" matt says, then lets out a light chuckle. "so that's where you went last night? on a walk?"

chris nods innocently. "of course."

matt furrows his eyebrows knowingly. "you don't take walks," he says, pointing his drink at chris, who raises his hands defensively.

"why does everyone keep saying that?" he asks, exasperated. "a man can change."

matt's eyes widen. "who else has said that?" he asks, smirking. chris kisses his teeth, knowing he's just exposed himself. though it's not like matt doesn't know what's going on. it just makes everything all the more awkward, the fact that they're both thinking about it but not saying it aloud.

"rory," he admits. "i facetimed her on my walk."

"oh?" matt says. "and?" he urges chris to continue.

he rubs the back of his neck awkwardly, looking away from his brother and out of the window.

"we were on facetime and i may have possibly ended up at her house," he says. "it was an accident though, trust."

matt hums in agreement. "it was an accident," he repeats, emphasizing the last word. "of course it was."

"yes," chris nods. "glad we're both in agreement."

at that, his brother sighs, shaking his head and taking a sip of his rootbeer. he's clearly not willing to play along with their little game anymore, much to chris' disappointment. he looks at matt, who is staring him down. where the fuck is nick to get him out of this?

"what is going on with you two?" matt finally asks. "because you can't keep up this whole 'i hate her' thing anymore. i know you want to, but it's getting pathetic because literally nobody believes you."

"wow, alright," chris replies, a little taken aback. he didn't think he was that bad of an actor, though when he thinks back to how he acted when rory was friends with casper, even when he had a girlfriend, he supposes he can understand how matt noticed. yikes.

despite how shitty harper was to him, he wasn't exactly the best boyfriend to her either. he contemplates apologizing for dating her when he didn't really even like her all that much, but then he remembers how she made him feel about himself and nearly laughs at the fact that he even considered ever going within a five mile radius of the girl ever again.

matt is looking at him boredly, waiting for him to say something else. chris looks around the car, thinking of a way to get out of this dreaded conversation. where the fuck is nick? he swears his brother never usually takes this fucking long.

"chris," matt says, now getting a little irritated. "you're literally in love with her. you need to do something about."

"woah there haha," chris laughs awkwardly in response, genuinely shocked that matt has just called him out so explicitly. "that's a crazy accusation."

when matt frowns at him, not at all amused by his attempt to be funny and simultaneously avoid the conversation, chris just sighs. "i'm worried about messing it up with her," he says. "besides, i'm not sure dating her is the best idea, anyway."

matt's jaw drops, and if death glares could, chris is sure he would be rolling into his grave right about now. he takes a moment, before pointing past chris, at the window. chris turns around to see where he's pointing, honestly hoping it's nick to save him from this situation, but he finds nothing as he gazes out of the window.

"wha-"

"get out of the car," matt orders.

"what the fuck, matt," chris says, turning back to face his brother.

"get out of the car," matt repeats, and chris opens the door and obeys, slamming the door behind him. "don't bother getting back in until you've pulled your head out of your ass and stopped being a delusional fucking idiot."

chris rolls his eyes, reaching forward to open the car door, but he can't. "matt, unlock the car," he says, but matt shakes his head.

"you're still looking a little stupid to me," he says proudly, crossing his arms and grinning. "if you want to get back in, you should probably prove to me that you aren't."

"you can't be serious," chris says, but matt just raises his eyebrows. he is being serious, and he's not going to let him back into the car unless he makes a fucking fool out of himself and says something he didn't ever think he'd say out loud.

he tries opening the door again, but not surprisingly, it's still locked. chris sighs obnoxiously loudly, then looks up at matt, who is rolling his eyes. "fine," chris snaps, now getting fed up with this ridiculous situation. "i like rory."

matt isn't impressed. "and?" he says, crossing his arms. chris groans.

"i like rory and i want to date her," he says, but matt shakes his head. "what the fuck."

"i know there's more," matt grins.

"jesus christ, okay-" chris says. "i like rory, she's the only girl i've ever truly liked and the only thing i want in life is to date her." he says the words in a bored, monotone voice, not at all happy about having to admit something like this out loud. he honestly sounds a little sarcastic, but he and matt both know the words are true.

"oh my god, finally."

nick appears from behind him, and chris' heart quite literally falls to his ass. he stares at nick, who just breezes past him and gets into the car - which matt has finally unlocked. chris also climbs inside, taking a deep breath as his gaze shifts between his brothers.

"we're gonna pretend i didn't say that," he says, and nick and matt share a look.

"no, we really aren't," nick smiles. "you've finally come to your senses, i'm so proud."

"jesus christ," chris says again, resting his head in his hands as matt begins to reverse out of the driveway.

"okay! oh my god, i've been waiting so long to get this out," nick starts, inhaling quickly before beginning to go on what chris knows is going to be a long ass tangent. "you need to start dropping hints, like, right now," he decides, looking at chris for approval.

chris, however, just looks at him blankly. "i showed up to her house last night in the rain and then proceeded to call myself 'taylor swift coded' because she's literally in love with that woman," he says bluntly. "i don't think i can make it any more obvious."

nick's eyes roll all the way back in his head. "yeah okay, i will admit that was quite...good...of you," he says. "but what i mean is that you need to go back to basics. like an instagram post."

"an instagram post, wow! so great!" chris replies sarcastically. "that'll for sure catch her attention."

"chris, we all know you have a bunch of posey selfies of yourself in your camera roll," matt says, not even glancing away from the road in front of him as he talks. "just post one of those that you know will have her rolling on the floor."

"what the actual fuck is wrong with you two."

matt and nick both sigh in unison, and chris gapes at them in disbelief. there's no way that after what they're saying, he's still the crazy one. he unlocks his phone and clicks onto the photos app, then starts scrolling through his photos. annoyingly, matt's right, and chris is almost embarrassed at how many photos of himself he's spotting. at least he looks good in them.

he's scrolling when all of a sudden nick lurches forward in his seat and snatches the phone right out of his hands. chris turns around and glares at his brother, who ignores him entirely as he continues scrolling downwards, until he finally stops and turns the phone around to show chris the scene.

it's a dumb photo he took of himself like a month or two ago, when he was bored and scrolling mindlessly through snapchat or tiktok or something. he raises his eyebrows.

"that one?" he questions. nick just nods, handing him back the phone. chris just shrugs, obeying. he goes onto instagram, finds the photos, writes a lame caption, and hits post.

"what did you caption it?" matt asks, briefly looking over.

"oh, just this," chris replies, showing him the phone. matt just sighs, rolling his eyes. "what?"

nick checks his phone and opens the post on his own instagram. he looks at the caption, then back up at chris with an unimpressed look on his face.

"a fucking emoji?" he asks. "of all things?"

"what, was i supposed to caption it with a random lyric that actually has some hidden meaning that only she will understand?"

"YES?"
