cas and astoria find themselves in the quiet library during a free period they've discovered they both have. they've settled down at her table, their books open but their attention diverted by music, since the pair are sharing her airpods.

they're both silent for a few moments, as astoria scrolls through her spotify to find a new song to play. ever since his halloween party, she's been determined to fix his god awful music taste. she clicks on 'les' by childish gambino and sighs with satisfaction as she leans back in her seat.

a smile tugs at cas' lips as he bops his head slightly to the song. after another second, he turns to her, starting a new conversation, "i saw you in the triplets new video," he says. "looked fun."

"...it was," astoria replies, utterly surprised that he watched it. "besides luna and i not winning, of course."

cas' laughter echoes through the library, and chris happened to pass by, his expression morphing into an odd mix of curiosity and suspicion. his eyes linger on cas and astoria, an unspoken hint of annoyance clear on his face. even cas notices the strange look and looks at astoria with a confused look.

"i didn't know you two were so close," he says.

astoria snorts, shaking her head. "we're not," she replies. "it's just an unfortunate coincidence that walked past. he's always giving me dirty looks."

cas nods, though he doesn't look as if he entirely believes her. "i thought maybe something happened between you two in the video. you both were covered in flour."

she scoffs, her voice tinged with bitterness. "trust me, it was nothing. besides, chris is dating harper."

"mhm," cas hums, nodding in agreement. "they didn't look too happy in the video, though."

"yeah no, it was fucking insane. she's such a bitch to him, it's crazy. i don't know why he even puts up with her," astoria comments, and cas raises his eyebrows.

"are you jealous?" he laughs, but astoria frowns. her eyes meet his, her gaze steady and resolute.

"yes, cas, i am jealous of chris sturniolo and his bitch girlfriend," she says sarcastically, before rolling her eyes. "obviously not."

cas nods, about to say something else when his phone rings. it echoes loudly in the silent library, earning him a glare from the librarian. he mumbles a quick apology, pressing the decline button.

"sorry, i gotta run," he says. "turns out i actually do have class right now and my french teacher is a second away from beating my ass."

astoria nods, a laugh escaping her throat as she watches him pack up his things and run off. he freezes right as he's about to leave the library, running back and setting her other airpod down on the desk. he whispers another quick goodbye, then leaves hastily.

putting in her other airpod, astoria sits comfortably the table, now blasting last christmas by wham! on full volume in her airpods. yes, it's only the third? fourth? fifth? of november, but she absolutely adores christmas music, so she usually starts playing it like midway through october until about february, until the post-christmas depression wears off. unfortunately for her though, she loves this song a little too much, because she's just sitting there mouthing the lyrics enthusiastically instead of focusing on her homework. she actually fucking hates algebra, it's so pointless.

she feels a tap on her shoulder and jolts at the touch. mrs cooper stands over her with her arms crossed and a bothered look on her face. astoria pauses her music and clears her throat awkwardly.

"sorry, was my music too loud again?" she asks, and the librarian smiles and shakes her head.

"no, it's fine," she says. "i just wanted to speak to you."

"oh," astoria says. "what about?"

"i noticed you haven't been yourself recently, astoria. is everything alright?"

astoria's breath hitches and about a million words suddenly appear in her mind. i don't know, she wants to say. i have no idea what i'm feeling.

usually, when people ask her how she's doing, she says she's doing fine even when she's not. she says she's okay, secretly hoping her friends will realize that she's actually doing shitty. and when she replies with "good", she's actually just doing okay, but okay is so much better than shitty that it's started to feel like good. astoria knows that that isn't good, but she's not sure she even remembers how 'good' feels anymore.

"of course!" she says, her voice just an octave too high. mrs cooper clearly notices.

"i spoke to the school counselor yesterday and she told me you haven't been going to see her anymore," she tells astoria.

"oh, yeah..." astoria says, knowing she's been caught out. "i just don't feel like i need to anymore, you know?"

"all right," the librarian says. she pauses for a moment. "your brother still goes, you know?" she says. astoria's eyes widen for a split second, but she nods.

"yeah yeah i know," she lies. "he's younger though, so it hit him a lot harder and-"

"astoria, if you're not willing to see the counselor anymore, please make sure you talk to your friends about things. you don't have to tell them every little detail, but it's not good to keep things bottled up. they care about you a lot, but they won't know if something is wrong if you don't tell them."

"i'll keep that in mind," astoria replies immediately, rapidly blinking away the tears that have started to form in her eyes. she hates this, she hates all of this so fucking much. she doesn't understand why all of this had to happen to her, why she can't just be happy and normal like everybody else. it's not fair.

she doesn't look up from her work and waits until she knows the mrs cooper has walked away. she exhales shakily, clenching her fists. she tries to focus again.

but she's distracted after the conversation and can't concentrate, so she looks up from her notebook and sees the ONE person she really did not ever want to see again. besides chris. and harper.

astoria makes direct eye contact with dante fucking nevarro, the boy she went on a date with around half a year ago. yeah, that boy who chewed loudly and who chris punched in the face. yikes.

though he doesn't seem to be holding a grudge about that because he smiles and starts walking over to her. astoria takes a deep breath, not entirely sure what to expect from this. dante stops just in front of her desk and smiles as she takes out her airpods.

"hey, dante," she says. "long time no see?" she immediately curses herself for the cringy greeting, but he doesn't seem to find it weird, because his smile grows.

"yeah," he says, putting his hands in his pockets. "i just wanted to ask you something."

"go for it," astoria says, trying her best to hide her nerves. the last time she saw dante wasn't...the best way to leave things, to say the least.

"so, i'm throwing my girlfriend a surprise party for her birthday in like a month or two and i was wondering if you and chris want to come? to kind of, i don't know, start fresh?"

astoria blinks, at the fact that dante has a girlfriend, but more that he just invited her and chris to the party he's throwing for her. she supposes it's a nice gesture, it just isn't making sense in her mind.

"sorry, me...and chris?" she asks with genuine confusion in her voice. dante raises his eyebrows in surprise.

"well, yeah," he says, unable to make eye contact with her. "after everything that happened i thought it'd be best to invite both of you, especially since you're dating now and everythi-"

"what did you say?" astoria interjects.

"i said that since you and chris are-" dante begins.

"yeah, i heard that." she cuts him off again, running her hands through her hair. "you seriously think i'm dating chris?"

if he was confused before, now dante really has no idea.

"um...yes?" he responds nervously. "i heard he had a girlfriend and i automatically assumed it was you, you know after he, uh, well, yeah."

"yeah," astoria agrees, suddenly really embarrassed as she recalls that night again. "but for the record, we aren't together."

"what?" dante laughs. "no way, bro."

"he's dating harper cameron," she shrugs. "it's been months, how the fuck did you not realize?" she asks him, pretending like she herself also hadn't noticed when they'd been talking for months before they officially got together. but for her it's justifiable, since she purposely ignores chris most of the time. it makes sense for her not to have known about it, but dante? he must be living on fucking mars or something to not notice.

"harper?" he's laughing even harder now, but astoria isn't really sure why. "i saw the way chris looked at you, bro's whipped."

"yeah, i don't think so," astoria deadpans, crossing her arms and giving him a doubtful look. "he hates me."

dante's jaw drops. it seems like he's finding out a lot of new things today. she's just not sure how he's managed to get everything ALL wrong.

"regardless!" astoria says, beaming. "i will HAPPILY come to your girlfriend's party. i won't be bringing my boyfriend, though."

"alright, alright," he says, holding up his hands in defense. "but bring friends! mal's not been at school for very long and i want it to be a big event."

"will do," she smiles, and he nods. they both smile awkwardly for another second.

"okay, well, bye astoria," dante says.

"see you, dante," she replies, and he walks away.

the minute he's gone, she grabs her phone and starts texting the group chat.
