it's now lunch, and the cafeteria bustles with students as the group gathers around their usual table. chris slouches in his chair, poking at his food with annoyance etched on his face. he can't help but feel frustrated at the fact that cas is sitting only two seats away from him, on the other side of rory.

everybody else seems perfectly unbothered by casper's presence at their table, but chris can't fucking stand him and his stupid smirk and his unnaturally white teeth.

probably sensing his sour mood, kali frowns and leans over, closer to him. chris turns to her, his eyebrows raised.

"what's up?" kali asks, a hint of concern in her voice. "you seem off today."

chris lets out a sigh, his gaze purposely avoiding casper. though even as he tries his best not to look at him, he can still sense rory's laughter at whatever casper's just said, and it irks him to no end.

"nothing," he replies flatly, making kali scoff. she narrows her eyes at him, one eyebrow raised as she attempts to decipher whatever it is that he's thinking. her gaze pierces through him, and it's making chris honestly kind of nervous, if not a little uncomfortable. she stares at him suspiciously for another second, before he sighs and lowers his voice to a quiet whisper:

"i just- i don't like him," he mutters, unable to help the way his eyes flicker over to casper again, now engrossed in conversation with luna, too. he turns back to kali, who rolls her eyes at him.

"you're so grumpy," she says. "no need to act all pissed just because he's hotter than you and rory can actually talk to him without wanting to rip her hair out."

she says it with such a casual tone that chris wonder if he's misheard kali's words. his eyes widen, but kali just nods, leaning back in her seat.

"first of all, he is not hotter than me," he scoffs, speaking louder now since both rory and casper are talking so annoyingly animatedly with one another that they're not going to hear him anyway. "and second, i literally don't give a fuck what rory thinks of me. i don't exactly love her either, you know?"

"yeah, no shit," kali replies boredly, since it's something she's heard about a million times before. even so, it doesn't sound like she's entirely convinced.

though before chris can say anything else, he watches kali's eyes widen as her gaze drifts from him to whatever is behind him. curious, he turns around, and nearly jumps out of his skin when he finds his girlfriend staring down at him.

harper has her arms crossed and her dark eyes are laced with pure anger as the pair make eye contact, and chris resists the urge to literally sigh and walk away. he's already in a bad mood because of the fucking friendly ghost sat at their table, so he doesn't need any of the typical harper bullshit he's become accustomed to the past few months.

the table has now turned completely silent, even casper and rory's conversation has died down as they too stare at harper, waiting for her to say something. although chris can feel everyone's eyes on him, he doesn't dare look away from his girlfriend, honestly wondering what will happen to him if he does.

"hey, harper," he says quietly, doing whatever he can to break the silence that is beginning to eat him alive. "what's up?"

"what's up?" she repeats, her tone angry and high-pitched. chris almost winces in embarrassment, though he's become quite good at hiding his emotions around her, so he refrains. "what's up is that you literally ignored my texts all night yesterday and then i check instagram to see you're doing god knows what with her!"

she looks directly at rory when she says her, and chris literally wants nothing more than for the ground to swallow him whole as he sees rory's face twist not with hurt, but rather with amusement. she looks directly at harper and shrugs, angering the girl even more.

"um, i was spending time with my friends," chris says in an attempted way to apologize without directly apologizing. "sorry that i missed your texts."

"you're so full of shit," harper complains, and chris can't help it, he sighs.

"we can talk about this later instead of making a scene in the middle of the cafeteria," he says pointedly, to which she scoffs and spins on her heels before walking off. chris turns back to his friends with not a clue what to see, but luckily god is on his side today, because the bell rings for the end of lunch. he grabs his backpack as quickly as he possibly fucking can and gets the hell out of the cafeteria without another word.
