Chapter 9
ELYON'S POV
Jamal had led me back up the way I came down stairs, to the room I woke up in which I realized was his room. After giving me a mouth wash, teasing me about having a bad breath, He went back down to get some things and I was lying on his bed, going through my phone.
I saw two text messages from my mum, telling me to have fun at Chidinma's and that she and dad had gone out to see my grandparents on the mainland. Venus was at a friend's. I looked through again and saw dozen of messages from Mateo, asking how I was, apologizing for God knows what and asking me if we could talk. I frowned.
What happened last night?
The door of the room opened and Jamal came in, holding a tray of coffee, a bottle of water and aspirin. He sat down on the bed right in front of me and placed the tray in between us.
"You need some painkillers and a coffee to recuperate. You'll be fine in a few hours." He said and I nodded.
"How did you know how to deal with hangovers?" I asked him and he shrugged with a small smile.
"Skye has low alcohol tolerance. Every time we go to a party, I end up being the one to clean up after her." He explained and I nodded again.
"Speaking of Skye. Why is she not back yet?" I took the spoon and stirred the coffee.
"She's staying there for a while, so I'm stuck here alone." He mumbled and I looked at him. Even though he might not have meant it to sound sad, it still came out that way.
"Hey, you are not stuck here alone. My parents are out as well and Venus is at a friend's. So I'll keep you company." I smirked and he chuckled.
"I guess. Come on, take your drug." He removed two tablets and handed it over to him. I threw it in my mouth and downed the water to half.
"Thanks. I kinda feel a bit better." I smiled and he smiled back. He pushed away the bottle of water and the tablets. Mateo's messages came to my mind again and I looked at Jamal.
Should I ask him?
"Jamal, what happened at the party last night?" I asked. Jamal's hand paused on what he was holding before he slowly looked at me.
"What do you mean?" He asked. I exhaled, handing my phone over to him to have a look.
"Mateo sent me some messages. He was apologizing for something I cannot remember. I can barely record what happened last night after drinking the fifth cup. If he is apologizing like that, something must have happened..." I trailed off, watching Jamal as he also watched me intently.
"...and you know about it." I concluded.
Jamal looked at me for a moment. I could see it in his eyes. He was having an internal battle with himself. He obviously knew something. He took the tray and the aspirin and stood up, making to walk away. I stood up as well.
"Jamal..." I started but he cut me off.
"The best person you should ask that question is Mateo. He will tell you what happened." He simply said.
"You know what happened so why don't you tell me now?" I asked him. He sighed, turning around to face me completely.
"It's not in my place, Elyon. I don't want to tell you anything except he does. I can't tell you what happened." He Shook his head and I was forced to scoff.
"That's not fair. You are keeping it away from me because Mateo is your friend and you don't want to break some so called 'bro code'." My voice was rising. Jamal groaned in frustration.
"I can't tell you because it will hurt you!" He snapped and I kept quiet. He sighed, running his hand through his face, exhausted.
"I can't tell you, Elyon. I can't be the one to say the things that Mateo did. It wasn't entirely his fault as well, so please take it easy on him." He said. I plopped myself back on the bed, the drugs kicking in
Jamal came to squat in front of me and slowly touched his hands to my face, like he wasn't sure if I wanted that. I couldn't stop him anyway, I was too drowsy. He ran the back of his fingers thought my cheeks, bringing me deeper and deeper into my tiredness.
"You need to rest." I heard him whisper as he dragged the duvet up my body, before I finally gave in to sleep.
****
We were back to school and Tolani's party was still the talk of the entire school but knowing that I missed more than half of it, I couldn't really speak. Mateo was avoiding me and I had a pretty good idea why. Through the weekend, my memory was coming back and I knew what happened.
...and I was embarrassed...and kinda pissed.
But we still needed to trash it out. He was still my friend after all.
Skye and I were walking around the hall way when I saw Mateo walking a far of towards us. He looked up and sighted me. I saw his hesitation. He was battling whether to turn around or keep walking. Skye noticed this.
"Whats the deal with you and Mateo?" She asked me.
"There is no deal, Skye." I brushed off.
"Y'all have been avoiding yourselves. I know something happened at the party but I don't know what because you wouldn't tell me and he won't tell me too. Jamal is also mute." Skye said, her tone sounding frustrated.
"Yes, something happened at the party and it's quite embarrassing to talk about. I'm a bit pissed at Mateo but I feel we'll sort it out, eventually." I muttered the last part.
"I hope you guys do actually." Skye reply and I nodded before I made a turn and went to my class to get ready for class.

"... Before the coming of colonial masters, Nigeria was in more of a confederal society. Then after the colonial masters came, we moved to Unitary system of government. After independence, it became Federal system..." The History teacher, Mr Kohol kept teaching and I was jotting down points. I could feel Mateo's eyes on me but I didn't look at him.
"Elyon." He whispered, calling me. I sighed and looked at him.
"What is it, Mateo?" I asked.
"We need to talk, please." He said.
"Well, as you can see we are in class and I honestly don't want to get into trouble with this man. So, let's keep it till after the class, shall we?"
"Elyon and Mateo, Weldon o. So everything I am saying no longer makes sense abi? That you dim it fit to interrupt my class." Mr Kohol's voice rumbled and I looked up. The entire class was staring at us.
Fuck.
"We are sorry sir. I..." I started but Mateo interrupted.
"She was explaining something to me, sir. About the Nigerian former Unitary system of government." He looked at me and I widened my eyes at him.
What the fuck is he saying?!
"Oh really? Why don't you come out here and explain what she explained to you, Mateo." Mr Kohol stated and Mateo came out and stood in front of the class. I watched him.
"Well..." He cleared his throat and looked around the class. "A unitary system of government is when as state is governed as a single entity in which the central government is ultimately supreme. This system of government was practiced by the colonial masters, so as to subdue the power of the kings and Emirates in their respective regions." He stated and by then, he had everyone's attention. Mr Kohol had gone to sit down on the chair set aside for teachers.
He continued to speak about the different system of governments that were practiced in Nigeria before the present Federal system, collecting the white board marker from Mr Kohol and taking over the class totally. Mr Kohol didn't even mind, he was also enjoying the class. Just as the class was getting more interesting, the bell went off signaling the end of the period. My class mates murmured in disapproval.
Since when did students like class?
"We should do this more often. It helps the class to get more interactive. That reminds me. Your first test is coming up very soon, so you guys should get ready for the test." Mr Kohol said
"Sir, what about AOC?" Tejiri asked.
"Which one is AOC?" Mr Kohol sneered.
"Area of concentration sir." Simi replied.
"Better read your book. Lazy pineapples." Mr Kohol hissed and walked out of the class. I looked up to see Mateo staring at me, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Was that a way of apologizing? Getting me out of trouble?" I asked him as I found myself smiling. He chuckled and sat down.
"Well, do you accept my apology?" He asked. I Shook my head and he frowned.
"You are not getting off that easily." I replied, bringing out my Mathematics note since that was our next lesson.
"Come on, Elyon. I know what I did last Friday was uncalled for. There is nothing I can use to justify my action. I'm so sorry." He apologized. I sighed.
"It's not entirely you fault. I'm never letting you guys talk me into drinking alcohol again, ever." I smirked and he chuckled.
"Deal. Come here. I missed you." He stretched his hands and I smiled, leaning over to hug him but I couldn't help the repeated question that kept flashing through my mind. I brushed it off.
There is no way that can happen. Mateo is too much of a flirt to like someone.
The maths teacher came in and the class continued.

JAMAL'S POV
"When last did you have an attack or any episode?" Faizal asked me, writing down on his note pad. I shrugged.
"It's been a while." I simply replied causing Faizal to look up and peer at me through is thick glasses.
"Should I call that a progress or there is more to it?" He asked me.
"I can't sleep." I replied again and he hummed in response, jotting down again.
"What about the sleeping pills? Are they not working?" He asked.
"They are working just fine, Faizal but I can't use them every time. School has started and I can't use sleeping pills on school night. So I rather not sleep at all. Coffee is helpful anyway." I rose my stereo foam cup and sipped the coffee from it.
"Too much coffee is not good, Jamal." Faizal said matter of factly but I shrugged nonchalantly.
"I really have no choice, do I." I stated and Faizal sighed.
"Let's talk about something less depressing, shall we. How is she?" He asked and I found myself beaming. I knew who he was asking about.
Her.
"She's okay. I haven't seen her since last weekend and I haven't seen her that much in school, except for lunch breaks. Visual art is on Fridays so... She has someone she hangs out with anyway so..." I trailed off again, remembering everything that happened on Friday. Every detail of how Mateo was holding her...
...touching her.
"Something is bothering you. Talk to me."
"I think...I think Mateo likes her." I opened up and Faizal sighed, settling down to listen to me.
After all, we've got three hours.
****
I was back in school at exactly lunch break like always. Skye was talking to me about something but I wasn't paying attention. My eyes was surveying the length and breath of the hall.
"Jamal." Skye snapped into my ear drums and I winced. Somadina and Vanessa laughed, Chidinma was typing away on her phone.
"What the hell Skye?! Do you want to destroy my ear drum!" I used my pinky to clear my ear.
"You were not paying attention. Who are you looking for. If it's Tolani, she's not in the dining." Skye said and I grimaced.
"I doubt it's Tolani he's looking for." Somadina said and I threw him a glare which he laughed away.
"There you guys are." Vanessa said and I followed her gaze to see Mateo and Elyon walking in together. I frowned.
"Sorry, Uncle Tega summoned both of us." Elyon said while settling down in front of me, Mateo beside her. She looked at me and found me staring at her. She quickly looked away.
"Seems like you two have finally made up." I found myself saying and Mateo looked at me.
"Of course. Elyon loves me too much to stay away from me anyway." He looked at her and winked and she giggled. I watched them, seething. Somadina noticed this and quickly changed the topic.
"So, what did Uncle Tega call y'all for?" He asked and I shot him a thankful smile.
"Well, I told Uncle Tega about Elyon's singing and he is trying to get her to audition for The Voice." Mateo said.
"Oh my Gosh. That's huge." Chidinma said, taking her gaze off her phone for once. Rounds of congratulations came out but I didn't speak. I just stayed silent and watched.
"I actually haven't agreed yet. I have to talk to my parents. I need to convince them and I also need to think about it." The replied.
"Well I'm sure they will agree." Skye said and Elyon smiled at her. Soon everyone resumed to eating their food.
I wanted to eat my food and act like nothing was going on in front of me but I couldn't. Mateo was flirting with Elyon right in front of me and she was letting him. I saw his hand come to remove a strand of hair off her face and that was when I lost it. I stood up abruptly, and that got the attention of everyone.
"Jamal, what's wrong. You are not eating anymore?" Skye asked me and I Shook my head, looking at Elyon. She was looking at me and I looked away.
"No, I've lost my appetite. I gotta go." I picked my bag and walked away, seething.
I can't be with them right now.
****
I stayed in the Visual Art studio for a while, drawing and painting before I had the urge to use the lavatory. I stood up and ascended the staircase, and began to walk towards the toilet when I began to hear moaning sounds.
Someone is getting some during the lunch break. I thought chuckling.
Curiosity got the best of me and I walked into the toilet and stopped short at what I saw. Immediately, part of me regretted giving into my curiosity but a greater part of me felt elated.
Tolani was seated on the ceramic basin, her skirt bunched up and her panties around her ankle, receiving head from a guy I couldn't recognize.
Well shit!
A/N
Egungun don enter express🤣🤣🤣
Seems like Jamal and Tolani would be breaking up soon. Me I'm happy, who else is happy.
Mateo and Elyon have made up and Somadina seems to be the only one that understands Jamal's plight.
I have rearranged the casts in order of importance and Somadina is coming after Tolani. It's kinda fair.
Will all hell break loose?
Whats in store for our favourite ship couple? (not Somadina and Vanessa. I know y'all think they are super cute).
I kinda have the urge to be updating and randomly as possible because someone like me, I'm always too busy so sticking to days and time is certainly not my thing. So I will update whenever I feel the need to update.
